1953 VW Zwitter - Split Window Rag Top Vehicle 1953 VW Zwitter - Split Window Rag Top (Verified w/Birth Certificate See Below) Owner: Page Contact Brian Location: Encino, California Email: Click Here Phone: 208-890-0337 Description During VW's Type-1 production years they built three basic models in the sedan, sun-roof sedan (rag-top) and of course the cabriolet (convertible). As with most high production cars, there are always those cars that are uniquely rare and attract serious collectors. The 1948 to 1952 beetle's are very respectable in this category because of their unique spilt rear window. But the "Zwitter" (German Zwitter Kafer and/or hybrid beetle) tops the charts for the October of 1952 to March of 1953 time period, a short 5 month model transition period and/or changeover that produced these special cars... The Zwitter variant was built on the old split window 48-52 body with the new dash of the oval window models, chrome trim was used instead of aluminum, vent windows in the doors, unique bumpers/headlamps/tail lamps & featured many Zwitter only interior components. As for this example, it goes without saying, that even fewer were produced as a Rag Top and/or sun-roof sedan with tri-fold canvas roof. Now that we have brought you up to speed, let's talk about this fine example... The current caretaker purchased this vehicle in Northern California with prior known 100% original show car restoration history. The body, paint and interior was excellent in presentation but the level did not meet his high standards of ownership, presence and overall functionality. The entire near perfect black exterior body with basecoat/clearcoat finish was completely disassembled, properly prepared and professionally finished in a stunning but proper $12,000 single stage black re-finish... During this process, the interior of the car received the same level of attention by a well known premier VW restoration facility, Lenny Copp's "West Coast Classic Restorations". Where it received all new correct striped cloth upholstery, door panels, pillows & headliner ($7K). Other noted items addressed included repairing/replacing some of the Rag-Top slide back mechanism, refurbished Kilometer speedometer, refurbished working clock, show quality jack and new OEM style tires... While this unit represents itself as factory in appearance and presence, it's original beauty is not lost with very tasteful but subtle mechanical updates that allow you to actually drive/enjoy it safely, at todays road speeds. Updates to it's functionality include the replacement of the current non-original engine with a complete 1915cc engine rebuilt by well known So-Cal VW engine specialist "Old Speed" of Paramount, CA., fully synchronized "Freeway Flyer" manual transmission, 12V electrical system and 4 wheel Disc brakes fitted to accept factory wheels. We think you get the idea... In closing, the current caretaker has presented/prepared an exceptionally nice example that can be admired for it's original beauty with the ability to actually drive it. You are looking at an absolutely beautiful stock 1968 VW Bug! This car will take you anywhere! This little beauty has new brakes, new brake lines, new wheel cylinders, new wheel bearings, new drums! I have also replaced the steering damper , the front end was recently aligned & the car was completely tuned with all German parts. All of the electrical has been gone through & is all working, everything works! The bumpers are new & triple chrome, not the common cheap replacement bumpers, these are nice! The car still wears it's original black calif. plates, check out the VWX, pretty cool! The tires are brand new with less then 100 miles on them & the 5.5 chrome wheels are new as well! The valves were just adjusted & the oil changed. The interior in this car is Excellent! the headliner is excellent as are the carpets. The interior is Tabaco in color & the outside is Savanna beige. The car has a couple of minor touch ups that I have tried to picture, they are very faint. You will find a minor 3-4" scratch on the passenger door, ( pictured )There are two super small bubbles under the paint. This Bug has had one quality repaint about eight years ago & still presents itself very well! The pans are excellent, there is a repair made under the battery. The repair was to cover a 3" battery acid hole, a weld plate was used & it's better then new! This sweet Bug has two adult owners, the first was a woman that bought it new & I am the second owner, I'm 62 years young so you can be assured this Bug has not been abused. All of the window rubbers are excellent, all of the glass is excellent! Compliments anytime it leaves the garage. This is an absolutely beautiful 1969 VW Bug in all stock condition. This little cutie started life as a navy blue Bug & was color changed to white. On a scale of 1-10 , I would say it is a solid 8 in the color change dept. This Bug has no rust, the floors are solid! From ten feet this car looks new. You will find some small scratches that have been touched up, still the car is beautiful. This Bug wears it's original Blue Calif. Plates. The interior is beautiful, the headliner does have a few little tears & the upholstery around the bottom of the driver side rear window & passenger side is slightly torn. These flaws in no way take away from this awesome little Bug. This car starts up 1st time every time & I would not hesitate driving it anywhere! This Bug runs , drives & shifts like it should! The transaxle is good with no popping of gears, ever! This car gets compliments every time it goes out. The tires are pretty much new, and the car retains its original rims. The rims are white with black centers under the trim rings. I believe it took a light tap to the front end at one time as I believe the hood was replaced. I also think it was hit on the drivers side at one time as I see a repair under the drivers front wheel. These little flaws in no way affect the way this car drives or looks. I believe this to have happened long ago. This car needs two items repaired, one is the turn signal switch is broken & the speedometer is in-op. I think it needs a new cable. That's all I think this car needs, the lights horn ect. all work as they should. This car is in amazing condition for it's age & is a blast to drive. I have set what I feel is a reasonable price considering the condition, I will listen to reasonable offers. This car will make someone extremely happy, as it is a sweet & tight 1969 that has not been abused. I can be reached at 805-453-8368 with any questions you may have or email.
