Last chance before the car goes in long-term storage due to out-of-state move... For additional photos, click the following link or copy and paste it into your browser: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOcqMBUwbvXH6HpRAZRchtJViGevQWcKWmDynwq2ksNQK-sosW1WBAVrQLjcN-Dig?key=SGNxeTd5Z3d1Uko3MnA1MDVhQmNlNHBwVmRTMF93THE STORY I found “Wally” – the name I’ve given this beautiful and historic 1961 Beetle - while I was living in Panama in 2011. I imported the car into the States in 2012. Per certification from the Siftung Volkswagen AutoMuseum in Germany (included with purchase), this particular car was built on 23 May 1961 and destined to Charleston, USA. I am not certain if Charleston was the final destination or if it was shipped via Charleston to Panama, but it also had a stint in Costa Rica. A previous owner claims this was one of only three imported into Panama that year. Wally was owned by an American expat living in the Panama Canal Zone until a Panamanian car enthusiast found it in need of some TLC and fell in love with it just as I did. According to him, the car had been parked for such a long time that a snake had claimed residence and the car had a small tree going through the floor pan and straight out the roof! The car was initially taken completely apart and restored in 2001 and it’s incredible that most of the car’s original parts were intact. ORIGINALITY To start, both the chassis and body match, with serial number 3899168. The engine also matches with serial number 5812753 (see certification), both dating to an April 1961 production (Note that body and engine numbers were different during that time, see http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php). This is extremely rare to see numbers-matching survivors from this era, as most of them rusted out or had major components swapped out. To be clear, the car is a beautiful driver and will look great for many years to come. It is not a museum car or a “Concours” show car. I drive it several times a week and it gets lots of love and stares on the road. ENGINE In 2012 I had the engine completely overhauled and have included photos of that process. The case was machined and I was able to get correct NOS heads. All other components, including pistons, cylinders, cams, bearings, seals, etc… were replaced by Panama’s top VW man Samuel Cigarruista. I also rebuilt the original 28 pic carb. I’ve put about 2,000 miles since and it’s been a total pleasure! Note that I did not reset the speedo when the engine was rebuilt. Because they originally restored this car in Panama, where it’s hot all year round, they did not bother to put the heater components back on (heater box, hoses, etc…) The car’s electrical system was also converted to 12v so it runs on an internally regulated alternator instead of a generator. The battery, alternator, coil, cap, rotor, points, condenser, are all new. All the engine tin covers are chromed out. While I would have preferred to keep them original, it does look fantastic and it would not take much to bring back the stock look. BODY AND CHASSIS All body panels and glass are original except the floor pans, a patch on the roof (remember that tree?), bumpers, mirrors, and vent windows. Body work done was superb. The floor, heater channels, battery pan, door bottoms, and other rust prone areas are solid with only minor surface rust which is expected for a 14-year old restoration. I’ve tried to capture the the areas with paint blemishes and surface rust in the photos. The chassis is in very good shape. The fuel tank was also replaced and I recently added a period correct fuel gauge, which was an available accessory for that year to avoid running out of fuel. The car was painted in Black Diamond Pearl which basically looks black at night; and a very shiny and sparkly deep bluish-black in the sun. Upon close inspection there are few imperfections, but overall the paint still looks gorgeous and shiny throughout. The original color, per the certification, is L41 Black. INTERIOR Most of the interior components, including the speedo (reads in kilometers) and the knobs are original which gives the car a nice patina. It’s almost like stepping into a time machine! Everything is in working condition including turn signals, warning lights, wipers, dome light, etc., except the horn which has all the right parts but I haven’t figured out the notoriously over-engineered one-year only system. The washer pump works but is disconnected since they are known to leak and make a wet mess inside the car. The headliner is in excellent shape and professionally installed. Upholstery is in the original Silver Beige leatherette. I even have an original 1961 owner’s manual to go with the car. OTHER Brakes are in tip top shape, and the rear ones are spanking new (including hoses and lines). Spare tire and jack are in excellent shape and a new toolset is included. The tranny feels great and the car shifts smoothly all the way. No fluids are leaking. The suspension is also in top order. The tires are virtually new with less than 3,000 miles on them. They are slightly wider than the original 165’s for added driving stability. I’ve tried to anticipate as many questions as possible and also included many photos (and a couple of videos) that include every angle, interior, engine, undercarriage, minor paint blemishes, and even photos of the car in Panama and the engine rebuild process. If you still have questions or want to see photos of anything else, please ask via email. We can schedule a phone call as well. Note that with the purchase I will include certification on serial numbers from the Volkswagen Museum in Germany, owner’s manual, import documentation, a bunch of extra parts (see photos) and a $230 custom car cover from MicroBead. Index of Photos (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOcqMBUwbvXH6HpRAZRchtJViGevQWcKWmDynwq2ksNQK-sosW1WBAVrQLjcN-Dig?key=SGNxeTd5Z3d1Uko3MnA1MDVhQmNlNHBwVmRTMF93): 1-7 Certificates, serial numbers, manual. 8-24 Car Exterior 25-26 Engine 27-33 Interior 34-38 Spare tire, gas tank, fuse panel, tools 39-45 Paint blemishes 46-54 Undercarriage, wheel well (by heater channels), underside of engine and rear swing axle 55-57 Steering and master cylinder under fuel tank, washe fluid bottle, under spare tire 58-59 Spare parts (including pertronix electronic ignition) and car cover 60-61 Car while in Panama. For Sale: 1971 Volkswagen VW Super Beetle, $6250 OBO This was the first year of the Super Beetle, with the MacPherson strut front suspension. I purchased the car in August 2014 locally. The car runs well, is currently licensed, insured and VA state inspected. The engine is a remanufactured 1600CC dual-port with a Bocar 34-PICT3 carburetor and 009 distributor. Pretty typical setup for reman. VW engines, though I do not have a record of how many miles are on this unit as it was installed in the car when I bought it. Most folks will recommend going to a factory vacuum-advance distributor instead of the 009 mechanical advance distributor. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly, doesn’t whine or drop out of gear, and just does what it’s supposed to. The car has a good clutch with no slippage under load, and I would assume it was changed when the reman. engine was installed, but I have no proof of that. The heater channels, floor pans and frame head are in excellent shape with no evidence of prior repairs. I have repaired the only area of rust I could locate. It’s a pretty typical spot for Beetle rust, where the front heater channel meets the driver’s-side inner-fender. I cut away the offending section of inner-fender first, repaired the heater channel underneath with a welded 2”x4” patch, then welded in a new section of metal to complete the inner fender, roughly a 3”x6” patch. All patches and surrounding areas were sprayed with weld-thru primer on interior surfaces prior to welding and the inner fender was undercoated in hopes of offering some future protection to the area. I went over the outer sheet metal with a cheap fridge magnet before I bought the car, and would encourage you to do the same if you come to check it out. The only spot of bondo I was able to find is in the rear apron, where someone must have backed into something at some point. It was repaired before the car was painted last, whenever that was. The front end is straight and there are no creases in any of the unibody frame structure, which would be indicators of a front-end collision. The strut towers have no rust whatsoever. Body-wise, the car is in very good condition – I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise. I knew it needed a good revamp of the mechanicals, but I enjoy that stuff far more than bodywork! Please see below for the list of new & used parts installed and those also provided with sale. New Parts Installed/Provided: --Complete tune up with new plugs, wires, distributor cap, points, condenser and generator V-belt. --New fuel pump, fuel filter (located above rear axle) and all new soft hoses. -- Rebuilt carburetor (by me, Mid-America Motorworks kit) --Cleaned heat riser tube and reinstalled intake with new heat riser gaskets --New valve cover gaskets (changed when valves were adjusted to necessary 0.006” clearance). --Oil regularly changed (20W-50) with oil strainer magnet added. --Transmission oil changed Feb. 2014 (80W-90 dino). --Top-Line front disc brake conversion kit (new TRW calipers, rotors, FAG bearings, seals and braided stainless hoses). (Saved original drums and backing plates of new owner wants to keep them; old hydraulic parts discarded.) --New rear brake drums, shoes and soft hoses. --New rear outer bearings, inner & outer seals. --New rear shocks. --New brake master cylinder (Brazilian TRW), German “blue” braided soft hoses, and brake switches in master cylinder. --New inner and outer tie rods (Brazilian) and center link (Brazilian). --New black polyurethane frame head-to-sway bar bushings and sway bar-to control arm bushings. --New idler arm bushing (brass), w/grease fitting installed. --New steering shaft (the shaft w/two u-joints) and new upper/lower dust boots. --NOS West German ball joints. --New MacPherson strut inserts (Boge brand). --New headlight switch (Mid-America Motorworks). --New dashboard heater/vent inlets. --New fan box outlet wraps. --New fuel tank nozzle-to-body gasket. --New RH door light switch. --New battery (Sept. 2014). --New “Save-My-Bug” oil dipstick temperature probe. --Provided with sale: New “Cal”-style front windshield seal (to match other seals without chrome strips). --Provided with sale: New fender beading and front & rear taillamp-to-fender seals. --Provided with sale: New spare throttle cable. --Provided with sale: New spare clutch cable. --Provided with sale: New engine bay seal. Used Parts Installed/Provided: --Aftermarket CD player (dash cut for aftermarket radio by a previous owner, I just upgraded the radio.) --Spare tire-to-windshield washer bottle pressure line. --Retractable VW beetle seat belts (fronts installed, rears provided but not installed). --Provided: Used correct ’71 rear decklid (Decklid installed on car is from a ’72, and was painted with the rest of the car. Used decklid would have to be painted before installation.) The only services I trusted to outsiders were the front-end alignment and VA state inspection. The previous owner had the interior almost completely redone with new front and rear factory seat covers, headliner, and dash pad – I have documentation of that work from the previous owner. Carpeting appears original, but is not in bad shape at all for the age. Tires are 80-85% tread. Previous owner also had all glass seals replaced with the exception of the front windshield seal. Items that would need addressed: The car lightly “marks its territory” with a few drips of oil per week; I keep a drip pan under the engine. The most likely source of the leak is the oil cooler o-rings, and I have new o-rings to be installed, but never got around to dropping the engine to do that.A previous owner removed the thermostat, mounting bracket and vanes from underneath the fan shroud. I have collected all of these parts (new thermostat w/used bracket, used vanes and linkage) to be installed when the engine is pulled. There are (3) spots of surface rust, LH front wing, RH door, and RH rear wing. The RH rear wing is also lightly dented. These are surface rust only, not cancer! See photos.A previous owner put a new muffler on the engine, but it does not have the required hook-up for the intake pre-heater hose. Since the pre-heater tube is not installed, this has led to icing of the intake on humid mornings on several occasions. This is a common problem for Beetles since the intake runners are so long, and the lack of the hook-up being available on aftermarket mufflers is also a common problem. My asking price is $6250 OBO. Based on the list of new parts alone, I think you can do some rough math that would show what I’m asking is not completely ridiculous. However, I know cars are only worth what the market will pay regardless of what I have in it, so I am open to reasonable offers. No warranty is expressed or implied. The car is sold in “as-is” condition with clear title, where currently located on a first-come, first-served basis. I will not finance, ship the car, or accept trades. I prefer cash, but would accept a cashier’s check (provided it clears before vehicle pickup). No personal checks, please. Bill of Sale will be provided. Any further questions can be directed to me at (five-four-0) 922-2(nine)64 or e-mail thru Ebay. Vehicle is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the Ebay auction early if it sells. Thanks for looking!

Upon close inspection there are a few little bubbles in a few areas, but overall the paint still looks gorgeous and shiny throughout. The original color, per the certification, is L41 Black. INTERIOR Most of the interior components, including the speedo (reads in kilometers) and the knobs are original which gives the car a nice patina without looking worn out. The seats are in good shape although the passenger seat does not recline as it should.
