1974 VW THING THE DESERT RAT SHOW CAR Desert rat The coolest vw thing around. If you want to have the coolest ride in town, then you need to check out the DESERT RAT! This one of a kind custom 1974 VW THING has it all, from incredible patina all the way to a new, fully powder coated custom pan with fresh mechanicals and powertrain! Starting with a solid VW THING, this project was started to create something that looked like a Kubelwagen that was dug out from the deserts of Africa after being abandoned in WWII, yet with all the reliability and upgrades to make it daily-driver capable. The body, believe it or not, is in really good, solid shape, and you can take a 4 inch square felt-covered refrigerator magnet and stick it anywhere on the car. The patina was carefully planned and executed, and the body, both inside and out, is amazing solid. It was lightly worked over with chains, sticks, and other assorted tools of destruction while in the process of getting the patina, to give it that appropriate aged look that has every single head turning when you drive by. Then, the whole thing was expertly dabbed with a mix of acid and water, carefully sanded and airbrushed, and after 4 weeks was artfully aged as though Mother Nature had done it herself. The patina is INCREDIBLE, and looks so awesome on the car that people just keep wanting to touch it and take pictures of it. It truly does have a finish that something would get after being left in the SAHARA for 50 years, hence the nickname DESERT RAT! I got a little ahead of myself though, because before anything was done to the body, it was pulled completely from the chassis and the entire pan was completely blasted, cleaned, restored, and then powder coated to a like-new finish. During that time, a disc brake set up was installed with drop spindles, new lines, and all new shocks to maintain a quality ride while still getting it down to the ground. The engine was pulled out, completely disassembled, and put back together as close to stock as possible to make sure it was reliable, efficient, and easy to maintain down the road. Same with the 4-speed transmission, which also received new clutches, axles, and linkage in the rebuilding phase. Everything was put back together, and the driving results are GREAT! It starts, idles, and runs like a good VW should, has plenty of power to cruise the highway at 60mph, stays cool and doesn’t smoke, and weeps the typical few drips like they all do to let everyone know they were here. I tried to take some undersides shots of the pan but I couldn’t fit it on my lift because my lift arms are too high, so I couldn’t wipe the dirt off of it. It is clean, and if you pressure washed it and wiped it off, it would look as new as the pans do in the interior shots with the wood floor mats removed Stopping is spot on, and I have driven it to a show 35 minutes north of me and back with no issues and no funny stuff. It is a great cruiser for in town and rural roads, but if you want to do 80 on the freeway you will need a different gearing, as it is happiest at 60-65. There are no known issues to me with the car, and I have it in our stable for about 2.5 months just cruising it around and taking it to shows and stuff to make sure it was ready for a new owner. Headlights work, parking lamps work, tail lamps work, and the brake lights work. The cool looking side spot lamp has wiring but it is not connected. The safety light mounted to the back of the car with the JERRY CAN holder is not hooked up either, but is a pretty rare and cool find. The Jerry can itself is cool looking, but I have not tried to store any liquids in it. The front mounted tow bar is fully functional, and I have towed it about a mile with my truck just to make sure it worked, and it does. Windshield folds down and latches up like it should, and the car is a blast to drive in either position! I threw on some old googles and rolled it down the road with the windshield down and got all kind of funny looks! The top is exceptionally clean and solid, with no seam pulls, holes, rips or issues. It latches correctly, and even comes with both the covers to install on the framework when the top is down. Original side curtains are included but will need completely restored, and a set of matching black canvas side curtains are included new in the box, but do not have the frames. An Optima battery sits in the factory spot, and keeps things charged up and working. Heater was not installed and is non-functional, but I am sure you could hook something or other up if you desired to drive it on cold winter days. Seats are solid and comfortable, and have light wear and patina to make them fit in with the rest of the car. All of the doors open and close like they should, and inside of the doors are solid and true. Wood floor mats are solid and in very good condition, and have protected the freshly powder coated floor pans from any issues. Dash is weathered on purpose, and the factory radio was left intact but is not functional at this time, and I have no idea why. Pedals are all functional and the roller gas pedal is easy to use in close quarters. The fender mounted mirrors are super cool military looking things and are actually really easy to see out of once you get them adjusted. The winch is for show, although I am sure you could probably hook it up and get it to work if you wanted to. Vintage front plate comes with it. Chrome wheels with vintage VW black caps are in very good condition, and have purposefully been treated to a light patina in spots to make them belong on the car. Tires are in very good condition, and have an estimated 75% of the useable tread left on them. They are size 165-R15 on the rear, and 135-R15 up front. The way the car is lowered, there is no weird camber or anything, so wear is even and tracking is clean on the road. Engine bay is clean and neat, and was mildly treated to the patina look for continuity. Same with the finish under the hood up front. Fuel tank and lines are new, as is the vent and fill neck. It is all solid underneath, and the rubber seal is in great shape just the one on the back engine cover. The car is a blast to drive, and will command ALL the attention at any car show or cruise night you take it to. It is currently in great running, driving, stopping, and performing order, and to my knowledge needs nothing to drive and enjoy. However, if you want an exhilarating, fun to drive, high performance, safe to drive, slightly, but, tastefully modified VW Thing then this is the one for you! What I have for sale is a new and improved low mileage VW Thing and is not a rust bucket nor a Bondo Buggy. It's one of the nicest Things you'll find anywhere and definitely one of the best you'll find east of the Mississippi River. The engine has a high performance camshaft and crankshaft which makes the engine have about twice as much power as a stock VW Thing's Type 1 Engine! Also, the Engine Block is the best Type 1 Engine Block and is a late 1970's Super Beetle Engine Block. My Thing has always been garage kept and it starts, runs and drives very well. Actually, my Thing is extremely rare because the original color is Avacado Green and a very small number of Thing's with this color were imported into the USA for one year - 1974. Who ever buys my Thing might want to consider repainting it back to its original Avacado Green color. If I was planning to keep it this is what I planned to do. However, the current color is actually a very unique custom, but, pleasing to look at Maroon/Grape color. I've never seen another Thing with a Maroon color so my car definitely stands out, especially with its two tone custom painted wheels! It's been well maintained by a certified VW Mechanic who knows VW air cooled engines. I've had a lot of work done to my Thing since I purchased it and have bought many parts for it; most of them are OEM Parts from The Thing Shop in Arizona. I have all the receipts for everything including a complete VW Thing Service Manual. The list of parts I've purchased and all work I've done to my Thing since I bought it about one year ago is too long to mention everything. If I was going to keep my Thing I was going to buy four more of these wheels and tires and mount them on the car. Other Noteworthy Info: Everything works on my Thing except the Odometer which stopped working recently and it has almost all its original Undercoating on the bottom side of the Floor Pan! Here's a list of noteworthy things I've done to improve it: Coated the whole trunk area, whole top side of the Floor Pan, inside and outside of the Rocker Panels with a high quality truck bed liner made by Herculiner. My Thing didn't have a lot of rust and this procedure was done only to protect it from developing rust issues. If I was going to keep my Thing I was planning to coat the whole underside of the car with Herculiner including the Wheel Wells, underside of the Fenders and top side of the Cargo Area/Parcel Shelf. I wire brushed, primed and painted the Wheel Hubs a Tan Color to match the Tan Side Curtain Windows, Tan Steering Wheel and Tan Bimini Top and repainted the Wheel Rims Black. Also, I have the original Baby Moon Chrome Hub Caps with the VW Logo in very good condition if you want them and will be included with car. The tires look like they're almost new and still have the little needles on the side walls. Car comes with matching Touch Up Paint I had professionally matched and mixed. It comes with it's original black Convertible Top in decent usable condition and an original Black Factory Hard Top in very good condition! I have an Original Stock Oil Bath Air Cleaner/Filtration System which will come with my Thing if you want it. Car has a Clear Title. There might be somethings I've forgotten to mention, however, I believe I've listed most everything which is noteworthy. My Thing isn't perfect and most Things aren't perfect from what I've seen. I've had this vehicle for 5 years, I've been slowly restoring it, I've replaced the Dual Carberator, shocks, ball joints, brakes, gas tank, sway bars, and just recently replaced the floors and all with factory parts and lots and lots more, I have all the receipts of my purchases... Beautifully Restored 1974 Volkswagen Thing Here we have for sale a beautiful restored 1974 VW Thing. This is a very special and rare car that VW made for just a few years. They are rarely seen and they are even more rare to see in this restored condition. Everything is new on the car. The engine is a brand new 1776cc dual carb engine with brand new everything on it. It has brand new baby Weber carburetors. There is a new Thing specific Tri-Mil ceramic coated exhaust on the car. The exhaust is very nice and has a pleasant sound to it. The stock transmission was rebuilt and shifts like new. The car runs like a top and has great power! The car is a nice white which is a rare color for a Thing, they are typically ugly yellow or orange. The paint is all new on the exterior with the interior actually still being the original paint which is amazing. The top is brand new and is very very nice and well made. The wheels, tires, hubcaps, are all new. The front end is all rebuilt and same as the steering. It drives like a new air cooled VW. The brakes stop straight and very well. The interior is all been redone professionally. There are some extra holes drilled in the dash which I have plugged. The seat upholstery is all new and it has a nice carpet kit throughout the car. There is absolutely zero rust through cancer on the car. There is some blemishes and little chips here and there on the paint. There is a little crack in the paint under the gas tank filler neck and in the front end near the front VW emblem. I bought the car restored so I don't know any previous body work that might have been done to the car. I powder coated the original bumpers semi-gloss black. The car has been upgraded to 12v. All of the electrical works besides the windshield wipers and horn. I have never investigated why they don't work. The windshield has pitting in it and has some scratches in it. The car has a recent oil change and valve adjust so that is good. The car is ready to cruise and have a blast in, the complete heating system is original and fully functional. This is the regular heating system like in all old Volkwagens, not the gas heater that they offered in 1973. I have a set of original windows that go in the doors but they will need to be rebuilt with new plexiglass because the originals are cracked and broken. I did my best to describe the VW to the best of my ability but I can not guarentee anything because I was not the one who restored the car and I do not know the full history of it. The car is not perfect but still looks great and you can show the car and drive it too! It's nice enough to appreciate and just have a blast with. It's not fun when a car is too nice to drive because you are afraid of what might happen in public, rock chips, door dings, etc. There is still minor work to be done to be a very very nice restored car but it wouldn't take much, paint touch up, etc. You can drive the car home if you wanted.
