This video reminded me that the gear selector is not operable. You need to count the gear position from park as you move out of park and into other gears: https://youtu.be/BKvMvbbqOSk This was a Southern California car. Only rust holes are in the trunk spare tire well and opposite side tool well. These flat areas are very easily repairable. Runs well and stops well, but smokes heavily upon startup and also upon hard acceleration. Mild smoke continuously. All cylinder compression numbers look good above 140 psi, and under 160 psi for this 8:1 compression engine. Oil pressure and temperature remain good. Brakes systems look relatively new and work well. This car passed inspection other than: horn (haven't even checked fuse), one side marker light and one brake light, and of course the exhaust smoke. Front passenger power window is not working. It seems to be off the track/motor as it bumps when I try to raise it. I assume this would be a simple fix once the door panel is opened. The sunroof works, but it moves only a short distance quickly before it seems to get stuck. I suspect the drive cable needs to be cleaned. The radio gets power and makes noise but doesn't get reception as the radio antenna is not installed. I'm not sure why, but I do have an antenna I can install. The exhaust smoke seems to be one of a few possible causes, but the compression is good. So it's unlikely that the very robust 4.5 engine needs lower end work. I can't gaurantee that though. The possible causes of the smoke could be: - Valve stem seals: Easiest and cheapest of all possibilities. Only about another $10 in materials to fix this as I already bought seals for 4 cylinders. - Valve guides: If this is the case, the heads should probably be pulled to replace the guides and seals. I have a spare set of heads that I could include with the full price sale of the vehicle. This would allow a shop to replace the valve guides and stem seals as needed. A local shop estimated ~$550 for this job. The price could be lower if all guides don't need to be replaced. In fact, the heads I have came from a running engine that was not smoking. So maybe just replacing valve stem seals on those would be quite inexpensive. - Head gasket: The heads would definitely need to be pulled to replace this, same prognosis as the above. The majority of the work is pulling and replacing the heads. - Piston Rings: In this case, greater engine work would be required, like possibly boring out the cylinders. I have no idea how much this could cost. To determine which of the above should be done, a leakdown test should be done. I got a quote of $90 to do the leakdown test, but have not had time to get it done. I have a spare set of seats that are very nice looking from a black interior 1969 280s w108. I also have door panel caps that might be an improvement for this car. At full price, I'm willing to include all these items. This is a very nice example to restore being: - nearly rust free - good running and complete - power windows and sunroof - last model year and robust 4.5 engine
