1971 Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Coupe: Mercedes-Benz model nomenclature in the 1960s is difficult to follow once the tailfins disappear. The W108 and W109 family of sedans can mostly be recognized by the grille and front fenders  from the 1961 W111 design, with cathedral headlights in the European versions, which were replaced by vertically stacked 5-inch lights in the U.S. Mercedes-Benz's 250 series replaced the 220 and 230 six-cylinder models, and served as  the company's sensible sedan, with subdued design, leatherette interior, durable construction, and decent performance. The rear fins went away in 1965, and the new body was longer and lower. A new 2.5-liter 7-main bearing, 128-hp,  six-cylinder engine appeared in the 250S and 250SE sedans and was replaced in 1968 by the 2.8-liter variation which generated 180 hp. The 280S, 280SE and 280SEL – "L" is the long-wheelbase version – all have Bosch fuel injection and  gained four-wheel disc brakes. The hood and grille were lower by a couple of inches for 1969giving the car a more modern appearance. A series of handsome W111 280SE coupes and convertibles were made in parallel, with the same engine  advances and a 3.5-liter V-8 were available from 1969 to 1971.   This 1971 Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Coupe is a Euro spec manual transmission example of the stately W111 class Mercedes. The car is very original inside and out and benefits from over $10k in recent updates and repairs including refurbished  suspension, new fuel pump and hoses, and much more detailed below. The Mercedes-Benz Data Card verifies that the car retains its numbers matching engine and factory options including sliding sunroof. These cars are an appealing mix of  old and new, combining the last iteration of the Fintail body style first seen in the 1950s with the new M116 SOHC V8 engine that saw use into the 1990s. The car was originally Metallic Beige and was repainted in the current off white  some years ago. The exterior is in very well preserved condition with original body panels. The body is straight with no evidence of any accident damage in the past, and the paint finish is in excellent condition overall. The extensive  brightwork is all intact and nicely polished with no pitting. Original wheels with body colored hubcaps are installed and complement the formal styling perfectly. The unrestored interior has some age related wear but is still very  presentable for a driver. Cognac leather seats have some discoloration and minor cracking and tears. The wood on the dashboard and A-pillars also shows some wear. The original carpets, door panels, headliner, and upper dash are all in  good condition. Notable interior options include front bucket seats, sliding sunroof, and power windows. A period correct Becker Grand Prix radio is installed and works well. The ivory steering wheel was recently replaced with a good  used OEM unit and is correct for the car. The odometer currently shows just over 9k miles and is believed to have turned over once. The car is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and limited slip differential, setting it  apart as more of a driver’s car than the typical Mercedes coupe. The Mercedes runs and drives extremely well, having been recently given an extensive overhaul to address any known mechanical issues. Receipts are available upon request  for over $10k in maintenance work performed in the last 12 months. There are no known mechanical needs and the car is ready to drive any distance upon purchase. The undercarriage is solid and rust free with the factory undercoating intact. A small area of the floorboard has been  pushed in, possibly due to a misplaced jack. The only known corrosion was a small amount of rust near the front jack point on both sides, which was recently repaired correctly and is no longer an issue. A copy of the Mercedes-Benz Data  Card is included with the sale, along with invoices for the recent repairs and updates. Listed for sale is 1984 Mercedes Benz 280 SE. This is one of the iconic Mercedes models of the mid 1980's; driven by the seriously wealthy when new and is a supreme style icon to this day. These cars are and were true Mercedes Benz luxury cars built for space and grace as well as reliability. It is a stunning four-door sedan of the very best Mercedes models of all time. It is finished in metallic champagne gold with matching dark post brown molding, gold cloth and velour trim. It is a very desirable post face lift model with an upgraded and more powerful yet economical straight six engine that runs like a fine-tuned watch and retains the more reliable four-speed auto transmission. The all leather interior with exception of a two small tears (pictured) on the driver's side is in excellent condition. The front dash is black leather. The trim is wood grained on the console, doors, and front dash. The seats are upholstered like fine pieces of furniture. Each back seat has a concealed storage compartment below the back windshield. Both front and back seats have fold-down armrests. Another grand feature is the electric sunroof. It does not leak and is in excellent condition. The radio/cassette player is Grand Prix unit. We are assuming it is the original as it fits in the dash perfectly and does work great. There is a four speaker system. There are electric mirrors, electric windows, and an electric antennae. The passenger electric window does not work. We think it may be in the switch as the driver's window does work. Also we have not been able to get the antenna to raise and lower. The tires are in very good condition and were like new when we purchased the car. We have had to replace one of them recently due to a bubble. There is one spare tire housed in the trunk. The rims on this automobile are genuine Mercedes alloy wheels. Above each wheel are chrome wheel arches. In 2009, we replaced the battery. From lack of use, we have just replaced the battery again. It has a five year warranty as will be passed to the new owner. The Mercedes is also equipped with power assisted steering (PAS) and an automatic braking system (ABS). It also has power brakes. The paint job is in excellent shape. There are two places on the car where the clear coat is peeling. (pictured). The paint has not been damaged. The Air Conditioning system uses the old Freon 12. We have never used it. The blower is strong, but the new owner will need to add Freon 12 if air conditioning is desired. Since we are not the original owners, this is the history as we know it. We purchased the Mercedes from the niece (executor) of deceased neighbors in 2009. He passed and then his wife passed a short time later. We learned from the Texas Department of Vehicles that this Mercedes was titled to them in 1998. At the time of purchase, the niece could not locate the title and had no knowledge of the history or the car except that her aunt and uncle had it in their garage for many years and rarely drove it.. This is the information that was conveyed to us. The only thing she could tell us is that her parent had owned the Mercedes many years and rarely drove it. We helped her apply and obtain a lost title. We had seen the couple driving the car one time and knew it was housed it in their garage for the ten years that we had lived in the neighborhood prior to his death. Prior to 1998, we do not know the history. We, too, have rarely driven it and it has been housed in our carport. We have learned from the VIN report that it was built and assembled in Sidefilgen, Germany and delivered to the United States in December 1983. We do have a clean and clear title however in the notes section on the title, the comments read rebuilt salvage. The vin on the motor, the frame, and the window all are one in the same. We have no knowledge about the comment on the title and have not been able to learn of its history. The comment was on the title in 1998 when the prior owners purchased the car. There had to be an incident that was totally corrected. In the trunk, along with the spare, there is a first aid kit, what appears to be the original set of tools, and a service manual. This car was out from the factory on August 1969, for a car who is 45 years and 7 months old is very solid, need's upholstery(not big deal) and a some cosmetic work(nothing big), new muffler( but I like this sound better), turn lights solenoid , polarized redone, and two elevators for the windows. New parts. New carburetor( I replace the Old annoying Zeniths for a very reliable Holly Weber).Last sunday 03/29/2015 I broke the Stickshift, therefore you have to replace it and that's why I lower the price by $500 bucks , fuel lines,fuel pump, sparkplugs, cables, radiator cleaned, oil change, New TIRES!,Alignment, and the list goes on. Owner purchased this vehicle in May, 1988. It was totally restored in 1984. Rarity: European model, 4 speed manual floor shift, electric sun-roof, full sized hard-top coupe, fuel-injected gas engine, disc brakes, power steering and brakes. This model including convertibles produced in 1966 was 6213. The engine was rebuilt at 70,433 km by Metric Automotive in Tarzana, Calif. in 1984. This firm rebuilt only Mercedes engines. The vehicle exterior is straight and sound and looks great. The leather interior is in good condition. The dashboard wood and windshield is trimmed in Malasser Mahogony. The polyurethane finish is beginning to flake. Any rust on the undercarriage is what one could expect on a 48 year old vehicle. There is no dents on the exterior and the paint is in good condition. This is a rare coupe with a great body style.
