1958 Mercedes-Benz 219 Sedan 4 speed manual needs Minor restoration This car was driven for many years before taking it off the road in 1984 to complete a restoration. The job was never completed. It is a solid car with no major rust or previous major metal repairs. The paint job is 30 years old and is showing some issues. There is no bondo or body filler under the paint. The door handles and bumpers were rechromed but have not held up well. 99% of the parts that were removed are loose with the car. The engine is disassembled but we do not have the cylinder head. _______________________________________ FOR ADDITIONAL PICTURES PLEASE INQUIRE _______________________________________ The 1960’s and early 70’s were a time where the Mercedes-Benz translated a message much different than what they are known for today. There was no exotic McLaren SLR or tire smoking AMG brutes that we so common affiliate with Mercedes but there was something much more simple. It was a time where the three-point badge represented a brand that was highly focused on building cars that were authentic to what Mercedes valued in an automobile. They remained absent from any influence by external demands, battles for the highest top speed, or really any adversity of substance. Without these factors dictating the direction of Mercedes Benz, they placed a priority on the build quality and engineering surrounding their cars with the aesthetics at the end of the to do list if you will. The 280SE would be considered the period equivalent to an S-Class in present day. In 1971, the 280SE received a new 4.5L V8 power plant that produced a snappy 200bhp and replaced the previous straight-six. This sporty sedan is also quite comparable to modern day standards for the engineering that went into these cars make them an absolute joy to drive. All the way down to the switches and levers, the 280SE feels well-built, substantial, and made for a reliable daily driver. The example on offer is Chassis number 10806712006930 finished in an ivory with a contrasting red interior. About 12-15 years ago, the car received a nut and bolt restoration whereby both cosmetics and mechanical aspects were restored thoroughly. The restoration itself was executed in Poland, for the current owner is native to the area, and then brought to the states where it has been looked after and enjoyed. Unfortunately, this car’s early history is not known aside from the information provided by the original data card. There is clear evidence of the past restoration for the paint shows well with very little to make note of in terms of flaws. The chrome items are beginning to show their age with some minor flawing and mild pitting in certain areas but they simply need to be sent out to be refinished. All remaining embellishment items on the car are in very presentable condition for a driver quality car. All the panel gaps and fitment are within proper clearances and pose no issue. The door fitment, shut lines, and operation is as expected. The jams are clean and neat with the original VIN plate still present along the driver side B-post. Enter the cabin of this 280SE and you are presented with a fresh red interior, which is not the correct color for this car per factory record but certainly is a tasteful alteration. The wooden dash face houses the restored components and gauges that all are completely operational. A couple items to note are that the deck of the dash has deteriorated at the right corner where it meets the windshield. In addition, the red vinyl is beginning to peal at a couple localized areas however; both of these items can be attributed to an older restoration, and are ultimately consistent with a driver quality example. Step out of the car and open up the front bonnet will reveal the hardy 4.5L fuel injected V8 engine that gives these cars their sporty charisma on the road. Everything is neat and correct but could use a good detail to bring up the painted and finishes surfaces. Close the bonnet and open up the boot lid and it has been nicely finished, with the original spare, all showing very well. The underside shows much of the same qualities, once again with evidence of an older restoration but has held up quite well. Compared to most, it is very clean, straight, and presents well. Speaking on the drivability of this example, it runs as though it was built in the 21st century, which is always the impressive part of these 4-doors Mercedes from this era. A turn of the key will almost immediately fire the engine and it quickly idles down, to comfortable RPM, a testament to the dedication behind the engineering of a Mercedes Benz. This example has the automatic 3-speed transmission which was the standard in period and it preforms beautifully. The transitions from gear to gear are firm and timely. The braking and steering systems are both in order and work well. These cars are easy to get up to speed and provide a basis for a great sports Sedan of the period. According to the gauges the car holds an ideal temperature, produces good oil pressure, and does not show any symptoms that indicate the need for mechanical attention. It is an absolutely fabulous car to drive and with proper seating in the back, a car that not only the enthusiast can appreciate but the family as well. In summation, the example on offer is a splendid driver quality piece that the enthusiast can put on the road and put a few miles on. The older restoration addressed any significant issues that these cars may have once had mechanically or cosmetically making this a sound driver all around. This 1971 280SE is a great opportunity to own a part of Mercedes-Benz history that came from a period where they built some of their most admired cars to date. The applicability for road use, the historical significance, and build quality are some of the items most appreciated about these cars and make it desired by the enthusiast.

You've seen these cars in movies, and soon you'll see them in the spotlight at fancy auction houses, along with the SL and Coupe. Yes, the workhorses of the 60s are beginning to shine, and here is why... The highly collectible SL and the Coupe of the 1960s are becoming trailer queens. Because once you get them in top form - which isn't easy or cheap - you won't drive them anymore...why wear and tear? Why reduce their value with miles of paint chips? And, those trailer queens don't drive any better than the W110. Maybe a little bit more horsepower, a bit more curves. But, these cars are so much more than appearance. The interior compartment, firewall, headliner and engine room have sound-deadening treatment to reduce interior noise down to modern-day levels at idle and at speed. The noise level is reduced further by an alternate differential gearing, reducing engine rpm at speed. The safety of the car is greatly improved by the axle conversion from rear drum to disc brakes, now a truly power-assisted four disc system, as most new cars. [Ah, let me prove it to you.] The car is a 1967 Mercedes Benz 230 Sedan, 2.3 liter, single overhead cam, dual carburetor, manual-choke, electronic ignition, 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, 4-disc power brakes, a clear title, no accidents and Pennsylvania Antique Plates. The engine rebuild has around 5000 miles, completed recently also a head bolt re-torque procedure and valve clearance reset, ready now for the next 200,000 miles. Installed a new Mahle ring set, main/rod bearings, three-point valve grind/lap, valve stem seals, valve springs, gaskets, seals, etc., only genuine MB parts. Installed also a new Bosch alternator, Bosch starter and solenoid, battery, fuel pump, original Solex carburetor rebuild and sync, proper braided metric fuel lines, new fan clutch, motor and transmission mounts, etc. The oil pressure remains pegged at 45 psi - even under intermittent load or lug, which means the engine is well-sorted, well-done and tight. No blow-by, no smoke, no over-temperature, no oil consumption, as new. A new exhaust is being installed soon, a complete stainless-steel system, built to original factory specification, never to rust again, trouble-free including a lifetime warranty extended to the buyer of this car from the manufacturer. The coolant system is upgraded with a new radiator core, new water pump, new thermostat, new hose set, a complete heater box rebuild including dual-zone heating valves (rebuilt), blower motor, hoses, etc. The manual transmission was dismantled and overhauled including all wear points, bearings, seals, mounts, shift mechanism, etc. The drive shaft was dismantled and re-manufactured with new spider bearings and flex disc. The rear axle was replaced and rebuilt with another axle having disc brakes (from original drum W110) and lower-ratio differential gearing (from 4.1) for lower-rpm engine speed, providing a quiet highway speed with plenty of cruising power. The 4 disc brake system was updated with a new ATE master cylinder, new brake lines, new brake hoses, rear disc brakes, calipers (rebuilt with seals, pads, etc.), 4 new rotors, etc. The clutch system was updated with a new disc pack, master cylinder, slave cylinder, hoses, tubing, clutch bearing, etc. The steering and suspension was updated with new rubber components at every location, including spring mounts and sway bar. All tie rods are new. The steering box and pump are rebuilt with new seals. The king-pins are new, including reamed bushings and seals. New Bilstein stocks, including steering damper. A new Uniroyal tire set is installed, including a spare. The interior features a new carpet set, including rear deck and trunk and a new headliner. Installed also a Blaupunkt Cancun cassette stereo system having 4 Blaupunkt speakers 2 front speakers mounted in custom housing and covered in black leather in the kick panels and 2 rear speakers with dedicated amplifier mounted under the rear deck. The original Becker with single speaker just doesn't cut it these days, but available also. The exterior has two re-chromed bumpers and various strips. New Bosch headlights are installed, as well as new bulb set in clean lenses with good electrical ground. The exterior includes a professional auto body restoration and rust proofing, painted two-tone acrylic enamel silver metallic with clear-coat topcoat. A new windshield was purchased from Pilkington Glass, claiming the last one in the US. The front and rear window seals are new. Included also the factory tool kit, owner's manual and parts manual set with maps, dealer directory, etc. and so much more... [Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful.]

I purchase two of these cars at the time (twins) one for myself and one for my wife. My wife did not want the car so that is the last I ran the car. The other car became fully operational and was sold for 11000 two years ago. The car did not come with a hard top so I purchased one but is Blue and is in good shape. I also obtained an v8 sl for parts which is the same color in and out. It has a complete interior and a red hard top which makes the 2nd hardtop. This 1973 Mercedes Benz 280 was owned by Margaret Truman, the only daughter of President Harry Truman. Margaret was also a famous author of thirteen Capitol Crime mysteries as well as non fiction. The car was purchased by the New York Times as shown on the registration, as a gift for Margaret when her husband Cliff Daniel became the Washington Bureau Chief for the Times. This unique car has the famous M-110 6 cylinder 2.8 liter double overhead cam engine. Rust free body. Front and rear disc brakes. Verified low mileage (32k), complete owner history. Car was in Washington DC until late 1970's and then garaged and used in Arizona for years while the owner visited her winter home. Documentation shows this car received Ziebart coating to a solid rust free undercarriage. In addition, there are many receipts available to show the care given. The car runs beautifully with no mechanical driving issues. I drove it on a 600 mile trip and cruised down the highway with no issues. This is a great conversation piece at car shows. Garaged all its life, never driven in salt or snow and it shows. Please remember this is a 41 year old car and has some oil residue on the lower engine exterior but does not burn oil. ATTENTION, BARN FIND. ALL SERVICE AND REPAIR RECORDS SINCE NEW!! Late 2012, One of my customers found this 1978, Mercedes-Benz 280E, W123 series, in the garage off one of his neighbors. The old lady explained to my customers that they are the original owner and that her husband, who had just passed away, had purchased the car in Stuttgart, Germany back in 1978. He had kept every single record of every dime he ever spent on the Mercedes in all these years. He even kept notes on little cards so he would remember when he dropped it off at our local Mercedes dealership. The first service was performed in Stuttgart, Germany, when the 280E had only 680 miles. All the records, including his personal notes are in a thick binder. For the first 24 years this Mercedes was taken to the Mercedes dealer ONLY!!!. He kept those dealer records separated from the others with a larger paper clip. The first service record from 1978 in Germany is kept in a plastic, transparent jacket. Every squeak and rattle was religiously noted on one of his cards and then reported to the dealership upon dropping the car off. All the original manuals and books are in the same binder. Included is also a Mercedes parts catalog for the W123 series Mercedes. The 280E has it's original paint and there is NO RUST on the car. Nothing has ever been done to the floor boards and they look like they were in 1978!! My customer was so impressed (A car collector) he purchased the 280E from the old lady. He had it towed to Autohaus in Virginia where they went through the entire car to get make it road ready. He spent well over $6,500 dollars between Autohaus and us, Autobahn Auto, since he purchased the car. His records are also in the binder. Here is some of the things he's done: The 280E has brand new brakes all around, brand new Michelin tires all around and brand new shocks all around. Front upper control arms with bushings are BRAND NEW. He had the valves adjusted, the front door strikers replaced with new ones. Spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor and wires are all new. Filters and fluids, including a brand new flow-master rear muffler, are all new. The heating and air-conditioning climate servo is BRAND NEW, also replaced is the AC compressor and the radiator. The AC blows ICE COLD, and it switches to heat just as selected on the temperature dial. The motor starts instantly, the transmission shifts flawless through all the gears as if it was still 1978. The steering wheel is without play and smooth as silk when on the road. The 280E comes with a brand new car cover that's in the trunk, along with extra floor mats. The only flaws I could find are the vacuum operated power door locks, the sun-visor clips and peeling paint on one of the hub caps. The original owner special ordered the 280E without a sunroof due to his height. The car has the original Becker Europa radio and it works flawless in all the stations. The antenna, which is often not working on older Mercedes, also works as it should!! It's safe to assume that it will vacuum door elements and of course the sun visor clips to make the 280E near new condition.
