Offering my rare 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4.5 LWB W108 for sale. This is rare car with factory floor shifter and factor passenger side mirror. This car is completely restored from the ground up. I am the 3rd owner and I believe this has been a CA car since new. I also believe the car has 114856 miles on it. This is probably one of the nicest 280SEL 4.5 you'll find in the country. Hop-in and drive it anywhere with new worries!! Here are some thing that were done.Exterior: sanded down to metal and completely resprayed to original color. wheel wells and undercarriage resprayed with undercoatingaluminum wheels have been refinished and have brand new tires. new rubber seals : all the doors, windshield and rear window, side windows, trunk etc.some new nickel plating was done, all the chrome is original and in great shape. This is a very solid 1970 Mercedes 280s . The car runs but new owner will need to buy and have the transmission installed. The car is a excellent candidate for a total restoration or drive it as is after you install the transmission. The engine runs fine except for slight flutter in one carb. This listing is for a 1978 Mercedes 280E sedan. A pretty uncommon car, as the vast majority of sedans were obviously diesels. It has the M110 2.8L DOHC I-6 engine with Bosch fuel injection. It runs great. Strong, smooth acceleration and smooth shifts. Cold-start circuit doesn't work so good--it has a rough idle until it warms up. But once it warms up it runs beautifully. Passes California emissions. Many new parts, see below for a list. The bodywork is in great shape; there is no rust any where on the car. It's been a local so-cal car since new--I have some notes on the car's history that I can relay to the new owner. Paint is in great shape, no cracks or major dings. There was paint repair to the lower right rear quarter panel at some point but the bodywork inside the trunk shows no signs of body filler--a previous owner rubbed the wheel arch against a post. The odometer quit running last year around 165k miles. It is not my primary driver so I believe it has around 175k or so on it now. It doesn't burn or leak oil; stays clean between changes. In fact it doesn't leak anything at all--a welcome surprise from a W123. Also of particular note: The vacuum power door locks work, including the trunk lock. Clock works (as always) and the sound system is modern, with Bluetooth and aux inputs with remote. Suspension is in excellent condition; all shocks are new. New brake pads all around. Rides beautifully, especially on the freeway--though the steering gear is worn and it has some play. Just the same it tracks great on the highway. The gas engine makes this car much much nicer for commuting than the diesel, as it will cruise at 70mph in LA traffic with power to spare, and much quieter than the diesel at any speed. The climate control and heat work fine--though the A/C does not blow cold. The A/C system actually is holding a charge, but I can't get the compressor to come on. The compressor clutch may be bad? The interior is in fair condition. The driver's seat has support but the MBTex is worn and beginning to crack. It has cracked and torn on the front passenger seat, and the stuffing/horse hair has failed on that side as well. The rear seatback horsehair is also collapsed, though the lower seat cushion seems to be OK. Carpet is decent except for driver's floor mat. All door panels OK. The map pocket on driver's door is cracked. Headliner OK. Rear parcel shelf carpet is new. Trunk is in excellent condition with the original rubber mat, spare and jack. No tool kit. Amazing condition, Full Service History Original/Stock Classic Pillarless Coupe. Beautiful 70's classic design mixed with German over engineering. I believe these W114 cars will start going up in value just like the earlier models. Originally Purchased and Serviced by Mercedes-Benz of N.A. Jacksonville, Florida, then moved to Huntsville, AL before coming to the Northwest in 1987. I would not hesitate driving this car cross-country. Includes Original owners Manual, Maintenance booklet, Owner's Emissions Systems Manual and Official Mercedes Spare Parts Catalog (with full parts diagrams and exploded views). Original Factory Data Card included as is a 1974 Full Line Brochure. Seems to be all original paint with a few areas of localised touch up. All original Factory Glass. Mercedes "Dark Olive" (Code 291) with Original Green MB-Tex interior (Code 166). Original Factory Tool Roll with Spark plug socket. Original Factory jack in good condition. Original Factory Spare tire from 1974 that still holds air! (probably still some "West German" air in there!) It's a Dunlop SP 175 SR 14 Made in Germany with a date code of 274. The Tire has no cracking but the rubber compound is hard. Audio is a Clarion PE-751A that according to the receipt cost $444.46 in 1979!! 4 speed Automatic Transmission with Floor Shifter. Rebuilt at approx 120,000 with receipts. Starts as it should in second gear and runs through the gears well with no flares or clunks. No delay going into reverse either. Kick-Down works. Foot operated Windshield Washer also works. All dash lights and guages work except for the clock which only works intermittantly (I can hear it working but the dial doesn't always wake up. Odo, Trip Odo and Speedo work great and are accurate according to GPS. Heat and defrost Slides move easily and freely. Blower works in all speeds and defrosts quickly. This is important because as most of you know, the car was built around the blower! Vacuum door locks work great. Photo's don't show the door pockets, but they are present and will be included with the car. Brakes have great bite and stop the car on a dime. Power Steering system works great with no notchiness or noises. Factory A/C car but cannot confirm it works as there is no belt. All A/C components are present and appear to be in good condition. Original wood in great condition with no cracks or peeling. Non Sunroof car. Headliner and cross bows in great condition. Dash Odo shows 61,XXX miles, (5 Digit Odo) but as this is my Daily Driver, this will increase. Original green Floor mats and carpeting in good condition. Original MB-Tex in fantastic condition with no rips and tears. Doors close with a typical Mercedes "Thunk"...Better than most recent cars never mind one that is almost 42 years old! Power windows Open and close with full range except Driver's side rear window. Not sure if switch or something else, but glass is firmly on track and fully closed. Original Hub-Caps in great condition with one missing some paint. Original trunk mat included, but could be replaced as it's hardened over the last 40 years. Trunk light works. Interior dome light works as it should with the door and the rear light which is controlled by a dash switch works also. All floors are solid and appear sound with only the Passenger side showing a half inch by 5 inch section of rust. Small rust area in front of the rear subframe on the passenger side. I have not touched these small area with POR-15 or any other anti-rust as I wanted it to be very clear to the Buyer. All four wheel arches are sound with no evidence of even surface rust. I have been all over this car with a magnet and could not find any issues. Center exhaust box and rear muffler replaced with original tip . (The exhaust they removed was original but had too many holes to keep) Wipers are quiet and work in all modes. The Dual Cam M110 runs great with no smoking or oil burning even at full throttle. The 4 Barrel carb works great (Solex 4A1) with both the Auto choke and secondarys functioning as they should. Base plate appears sound with no warping or vacuum leaks. All hard fuel lines in excellent shape. Driveline Flex disks appear in good shape. Recent Service with new plugs, wire-set and Bosch Distributor cap and rotor. Last month I had the starter replaced, drive shaft center support replaced, oil changed, sway bar links, and all hoses replaced by a certified Mercedes shop, all at a cost of $1800. My plan was to have it repainted but I have another more expensive project I just took on, so sadly this car has to go. "Mercedes Service Manual - Passenger Cars Starting 1968, Series 114-115. This is a one of a kind opportunity to own a show stopping, supped up Benz. Its been painted with matt black, updated lighting, painted interior, custom dash. etc. This is a art piece. If you are looking for something that will note attention with class, this is it. The car is not an everyday vehicle, however its driven much in the two years since I worked on it. I need to sell this because I have to move, and I simply don't want to keep the vehicle outside and let it go to waste. Look over the photos, and let yourself decide. The right buyer knows if this is something they need, and I want this special item to go to the right person most importantly. Outside of the looks, does the vehicle have issues? Well you have to give her a bit of gas in starting, this is common with older Mercedes, and there is some exterior rust starting to appear on the wheel base, Sometimes the sunroof breaks a fuse, I mean I can go into a very detailed account, The simple fact is the car still runs rather well, its been maintenanced for exhibitions. New breaks, new plugs, new alternator, no oil burning, occasional stall from ethanol in new gas (again common issue in older Mercedes), new battery, inside engine clean, bottom clean. Like I said this is more of a fashion statement, and an art piece. I will be happy to answer anything I can. The car is in and around the Baltimore Washington Area. This is a fantastic southern California survivor 1976 Mercedes 280 C Coupe. This W114 is not common in a 2 door. All original and numbers matching. Still undercoated from the factory with zero rust underneath. All original panels and the body is straight and clean as shown. Original wood dash and amazing original interior. Seats are still very supple, surprising for 40 years old. No accidents. New exhaust and new tires. The original 2.8 inline 6 with the original 4bbl carburetor has good compression on all cylinders and it runs and drives great. No smoking or leaks. Passes smog every time and it has current California registration. Clean California title with it as shown. The transmission shifts smoothly and the brakes and steering operate properly. Everything works including the power windows and power sunroof. Becker Europa radio (out for safe keeping in photos). The engine on this vehicle is not running properly. This vehicle has some defects.The mileage represented on this vehicle is accurate. All power equipment is functioning properly. I have the original title from CA and I also have a current Maine Title. When you turn the car on all the electrical equipment works. Radio, lights, power antenna, ac, dash lights, ect. when you turn the key to start the car it goes "Click" and then does nothing.
