1956 Volkswagen Beetle VW Custom Woody Wagon Once upon a time this radical custom Woody was just another 1956 Volkswagen Beetle rolling out of the Wolfsburg Germany VW plant. However, the modern history began in 1999 as a picture concept turned into reality. The rear body of this little oval-window coupe was chopped and had a '70 VW Squareback grafted on to the rear. The lower body was sheathed with wooden siding patterned after a traditional woody. And like a traditional woody, the roof is fabric-covered. From the windshield forward, this bright yellow Beetle looks like any other. Scan rearward and it is a wild woody that simply has to be from California. Custom fabricated running boards are finished in polished billet and the body color, base coat, color coat, clear coat PPG paint, and tie the front and rear together nicely. Inside, the metal of the dash and upper door sills has been painted in the traditional wood-grain style and the 1956 seats have been newly-covered in tan vinyl and fresh carpets cover the floors. Sit in one of those firm buckets, tilt your head back, and you see a headliner made entirely of hand-crafted cherry-stained wood to compliment the wooden paneling of the body exterior. Such a wild-looking custom Beetle couldn't possibly make do with its stock 1200cc engine, so in went a later, more robust 1641cc engine with dual Kadron carburetors. The fresh engine has covered fewer just 2000 miles and is fitted with headers and dual quiet-pack exhaust system. A four-speed transaxle remained, but for this custom woody wagon it was given a much more positive Hurst shifter. Instead of the skinny little steel wheels and hubcaps standard on 1956 Beetles, this custom rolls on 15" BRM alloy rims. Front track has been narrowed by two inches, and at rest, this radical VW sits low. However, thanks to air shocks mated with compressed nitrogen, the car has five-inches of lift for safe transit - because this Beetle gets driven to shows. The great thing about a custom like this Beetle is that from the paint, to the wooden coachwork, to the taillights, this diminutive woody is the one and only. Yet, with Volkswagen Beetle running gear so sturdy and readily available, it’s one custom you could afford to use daily. While under construction, this custom Beetle took a third and then a second in class. In its only outing since completion, the VW Classic in Irvine, the Woody won its class.
