1971 Mercury Cougar Runs Great Nice with 351 Cleveland, Automatic. Stock 2 barrel carb, flow master dual exhaust. This car was my father’s unfinished restoration project and could be perfect with a little work, or good to drive as-is. Runs great, shifts great, no mechanical problems. Interior has new carpet, vinyl seats (passenger side needs stitches), missing covers and buttons for power windows but they work fine, aside from 2 minor dents shown, body is straight and clean. 3 of 4 original hubcaps are in great shape and the fourth is good enough. If you want to hear her purr, I can send you a video clip

Whatever you might be building or modifying, if you want to put a muscular small block in it, you should seriously consider one of Ford Racing's 385 hp, 351 c.i.d. GT-40 crate engines. They're built around Ford's well-known 5.8L Sportsman II block, fitted out with forged pistons and a single-plane "Victor Jr." intake manifold, plus high-flowing, race-proven GT-40 aluminum cylinders heads, complete with the GT-40 valvetrain package. The compression ratio is an easy-to-live-with 9.0:1, but the engines' output is still hefty. With headers and a 780 cfm Holley (both sold separately), they crank out an impressive 385 hp at 5,500 rpm, with 377 ft.-lbs. of torque. That's more than enough to motivate just about any street rod, hot rod, custom car, or truck in a big way. The engines come with oil and water pumps, a dual-sump oil pan, a billet steel flywheel, and a high-performance harmonic balancer.WarrantySome parts are not legal for sale or use in California on any pollution-controlled motor vehicles Pony car & Hot Rod lovers delight ,This car was billed as the "Gentlemen's Muscle Car" or a "Muscle Car in a Sports Jacket" because it was more luxurious and refined than its' Mustang stable mate. This 72 Cougar is ready to rumble,This fine Cougar has received new life from a Genuine 351 Ford Crate Motor,Fuel Pumped in by an external electric fuel pump, Jet coated header's feed exhaust through two magna flow mufflers and out through aluminum 2 3/4 inch one piece H pipes with oval tips, ,Electric fans provide cooling air through a Griffin four row radiator ,with an Edelbrock Victor Jr. aluminum high rise manifold fed fuel via Holly 670 CFM Street Avenger four barrel carb.Pump gas pumped in by an external electric fuel pump ,Power grounded by a Dominator Jr.Ford AOD tranny , through a custom balanced Aluminum Drive line ,Four good 15 inch tires on spiffy torque aluminum wheels complete the power distribution package.Out side , Ford produced the first sequential turn signals and rear illumination that add a very distinctive element to your turning and breaking alert system's .Paint shines as if new,Bikini top looks fine , no dents or rips outside or in.Interior looks as if never used.Speaker grills missing off of door panels but available .Front Bumper replaced ,Triple Chrome ,With a matching set wheels . Wheelbase 112.0 in (2,845 mm) For 1971, the Cougar was restyled, weighed less, and had only a one-inch-longer wheelbase than its predecessors (112 vs. 111 - which was similar to GM's intermediate-sized two-door models, such as the Olds Cutlass). The front end now featured four exposed headlights; the disappearing headlights were eliminated. The center grille piece was now larger, sharing its appearance with the 1971 Mercury Cyclone. The rear featured a semifastback with a " flying buttress" sail-panel. The convertible returned, as did the XR-7 and the GT package. The Eliminator package was dropped, but the Ram Air option remained. The engine lineup was revised for 1971, as well. Now only three engines were offered—the standard 240 hp (179 kW) 351 Windsor two-barrel V8, the 285 hp (213 kW) 351 Cleveland four-barrel V8, and the 370 hp (276 kW) 429 Cobra Jet four-barrel V8. 1971-1973 Mercury Cougar XR7 By 1972, the climate had begun to change as the muscle car era ended. No longer able to use gross power numbers, the manufacturers had to use net power figures, which dropped the once-mighty figures down substantially. Engines were shuffled around a bit with the 429 engine option no longer available. They were now the standard 163 hp (122 kW) 351 Cleveland two-barrel V8, or the 266 hp (198 kW) 351C four-barrel Cobra Jet V8. Other than that, the Cougar remained a carryover from 1971. Only minor trim details were changed in 1972. The big-block engines were gone for 1972 and 1973. The days of performance-oriented muscle cars were coming to an end. Aside from minor grille and taillight changes, 1973 would be largely a carryover year for the Cougar, but it would mark the last year of the Mustang-based Cougar, and the end of Cougar convertibles. (A light blue/white Cougar XR-7 convertible was actually the "last" convertible built by Ford Motor Company.) An automatic transmission and power front disc brakes became standard, though a 4-speed manual transmission was still available as a rarely ordered option. Many changes were scheduled for the 1973 models. Power figures continued to change, as new federal/ EPA regulations began their stranglehold on the V8 engines. The new figures continued to fluctuate, but engine options remained unchanged from 1972. The standard engine continued to be the 168 hp (125 kW) 351 Cleveland two-barrel V8. Optional was the 264 hp (197 kW) 351 Cobra Jet V8. The following years changed to the Thunderbird/Torino chassis. Additionally, an arguably little known trim style and certain mandatory options (e.g. hardtop) of Cougar was the "Bronze Age" edition made by Mercury in 1973 (also made for the models: Mercury Monterey, Mercury Montego MX, and Mercury Comet of that year). [8] [9] While it was marketed primarily in copper metallic colors, [10] it was also available in 6 other colors: ivy glamour metallic, green metallic, medium brown metallic, saddle bronze, medium yellow gold and white. Total Production: 1971: 62,864 1972: 53,702 1973: 60,628

Excellent condition! I've owned the car for more than 20 years. I's always been garaged and very well taken care off. It's only been driven a few times a year but would make a great daily driver or weekend cruiser. Have actual tile and owners manual. Original 351 Cleaveland that was rebuild a few years back. Odometer shows 50k. Added dual exhaust and replaced suspension last year. Factory Air

1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible. Only 1,997 XR7 convertibles were ever built in 1970, and this one has been a California car it's entire life. I bought this Cougar 5 years ago and am the 3rd owner and have driven it about 3,000 miles. This Cougar was first sold at Dick Anderson Ford-Mercury in Madera, California 93637. It then made its way to the Bay Area with the original owner and has been in this area since. It was originally Deep Gold Metallic. Interior is original Ginger with Ginger leather on front seats. This is one loaded XR7 Convertible as it was ordered with almost every option available. (See Marti report)351-2V Cleveland EngineWhite Convertible top, which has the original glass rear windowAutomatic TransmissionPower WindowsConsolePower Front Disc BrakesPower SteeringAir Conditioning (it is all original and intact, but it does not turn on. I didn't need it, so didn't have it looked at)AM/FM StereoTinted GlassFactory Styled Steel WheelsThis car is all original except for 1 repaint some time in the late 1980's. Sequential turn signals work great as well as the rim-blow horn.Since I have owned the car, the following work has been performed:2010New convertible top, radiator, heater core (this alone was an all day job), thermostat, replaced all radiator and heater hoses, all belts, radiator cap, flushed and serviced transmission, flushed brake system, new dual exhaust with Turbo mufflers, new Firestone Firehawk white letter radial tires and alignment.2012New front suspension including upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie-rod ends, idler arm, upper shaft kit, sway bar link kit, strut rod bushings, new Monroe shocks, full tune-up including plugs, points, condenser, rotor, cap, plug wires, pcv valve and fuel filter, new battery, alternator and voltage regulator, rebuilt transmission shift assembly, repacked front wheel bearings. Convertible top works great, switch works, but button falls off. Replacement switch included with car.Cigarette lighter, left door speaker do not work. Headlights turn on, but hide-away covers stay closed. This Cougar runs great and does not burn oil. I took it on a 700 mile trip last summer. If you are looking for a very nice original car that you can hop in and drive around all summer long, this cutie pie is the one! The 351W 4V runs great, with only 116K miles on the original engine. Power top with correct glass back window in great condition, leather interior, power windows, power steering, power brakes, rim blow horn, styled steel wheels and dual exhaust. Equipped with air conditioning which currently does not blow cold - that's the only thing that doesn't fully function on the car. Reasonably new paint. Recently replaced steering components and hoses. Receipts back to 1978, copy of original build sheet also in packet. This car was LOVED by it's former owner, who very sadly passed away. It is now being sold through the estate by the Trustees who were lifelong friends and have been around the car for literally decades. More pictures and more information available upon request.

Scratches, Right Passenger window is damaged along with the vinyl on the passenger side door. Back convertible top mesh has fallen out. Some trim is off the car, but I have all the extra trim in containers. Haven't gotten around to fixing the car up. It's a clean fixer-upper car. Great for restoring, Engine runs great and only has around 75,000 miles on it. The engine was recently refurbished 4 years ago. Garage kept for most of it's life and has original paint on it. Minor Dent on the front side of the car, but the car has never been in an accident. Driver vinyl is starting to wear through and carpet needs to be replaced, but there is little rust on the car. California lived it's whole life and been in the family since 1969. It's a sweet convertible and pretty rare car now a days; A 3 speed automatic transmission sits in the car and a 351cu Windzor pulls the car. It has plenty of get-up and a little money could turn it into a bullet. You pay for shipping if you're out of state. Selling for 11,000 BY THE WAY: I have the Hub Caps in the trunk along with some other things just so they don't get stolen, I rarely put them on, only for special occasions.

This is an original 1972 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible with A/C. California born and raised with the original Blue Plates. ZERO Rust and the body panels are all original. Completely numbers matching from the carburetor to the oil pan. Original interior in great condition from the seats to the door panels and the dash pad. They only made 1900 of these so it is quite uncommon. Starts right up and runs great. $13k invested in this XR7. Top needs a new canvas installed but the top motor works. Clean California title, no accidents, and current registration through 2016 and the original Blue plates. Just took these pictures the other day. Starts right up and runs great. I took it on a 20 mile cruise the other night and it is a pleasure to drive even on the highway. I took about 100 photographs and 2 videos that show it running, click view all below to see them. Located in San Diego, CA. It is safe and ready to drive away or I will work with your transporter. International buyers accepted. All questions will be answered honestly just email or Txt/Call 619-537-7417.
