This was also the first major re-design to the body shell. The Carrera model had a 0.30 coefficient of drag. The Type 996 spawned over a dozen variations, including the Turbo, four-wheel-drive and twin-turbo, often made appearances in magazines' lists of the best cars on sale. The Carrera underwent revisions for model year 2002, receiving clear lens front and rear indicator lights which were first seen on the Turbo version two years earlier. A mildly revised front fascia was also introduced, though the basic architecture remained. Engine displacement was increased in 2002 to 3.6 L. The roof system on the convertible transformed the car from a coupé to a roadster in 19 seconds. The car is equipped with a rear spoiler that raises at speeds over 120 km/h (75 mph). It can also be raised manually by means of an electric switch. 996 Turbo (2001--2005) In 2000, Porsche launched the Turbo version of the Type 996 for MY 2001. Like the GT3, the new Turbo engine derived from the 911 GT1 engine and, like its predecessor, featured twin-turbos and now developed 420 PS(309 kW). Also like its predecessor the new Turbo was only available with all-wheel drive. The Turbo can reach a top speed of 189 mph (304 km/h). The styling was more individual than previous Turbos. Along with the traditional wider rear wings, the 996 Turbo had different front lights and bumpers when compared to the Carrera and Carrera 4. The rear bumper had air vents that were reminiscent of those on the Porsche 959 and there were large vents on the front bumper. Turbo The 996 Turbo debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1999. It went on sale in the US in summer of 2000 as a 2001 model. The turbo was powered by a water-cooled twin turbocharged/intercooled 3.6L H-6 derived from the 1998 LeMans winning GT-1 car. The engine produced 415 hp at 6000 rpm and 415 lb·ft (563 N·m) of torque. The 996 turbo featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed Tiptronic transmission. The turbo had revised styling and a wider stance than the naturally aspirated 996 Carreras along with new bi-xenon headlamps. The turbo also came with VarioCam Plus as well as stability management. In the US, the rear spoiler would automatically rise at 76 mph (122 km/h) and lower at 36 mph (58 km/h). The turbo had revised bodywork to allow airflow to 3 radiators up front and to accommodate 18-inch wheels and tires. Other features introduced in 2002, was a glove box, center mounted cup-holders, an optional Bose stereo and rain-sensing wipers. In 2004, the Turbo cabriolet debuted which was the first 911 Turbo Cabriolet since 1989. The Turbo, GT2 and GT3 models use the Aluminum crankcase of the air-cooled 911 with its true dry sump oiling system. The six separate individual Nikasil lined cylinders in this engine are covered with two separately installed water jackets each covering a bank of 3 cylinders on each side of the engine, thus adding water cooling to a crankcase originally designed for air-cooled cylinders (the normal 996 Carrera engine has the cylinders and water jackets cast together with the crankcase). This engine is very similar to that of the Le Mans winning Dauer Porsche 962 and Porsche GT1 racing cars' engines.
