1968 Mercury Monterey 390-4V MERCURY MONTEREY 2DR FASTBACK 1968 68 FORD 390GT BARN FIND SURVIVOR Here you have the opportunity to own one of the coolest cars you will ever see. A 1968 Mercury Monterey 2-Door fastback. We bought this car on ebay in 2002 from the original owner who had it stored in a barn behind her house for fourteen years because she was no longer able to drive it. It was very well preserved with very low miles, and needed very little to get it running and driving again. We drove this car as a daily driver and took it on in-state vacations for about ten years, and in the last two years it's been driven purely for pleasure. It's got a great smooth ride, and turns heads everywhere you go. In recent years it's started to attract more attention with people rolling down their windows and craning their necks to watch it drive by. Lots of thumbs up and conversations at the gas station. The only reason we're putting it up for sale is because we've moved into a new (to us) home with limited garage space and don't want to leave it parked outside. This car is a largely unmolested survivor, in very good original condition. You just don't see em like this anymore, which is part of the reason we haven't repainted it or done a restoration. All the chrome is there and in good shape, and most of the trim is there and in good shape. We just purchased a Marti report for the car, and as you can see (in the pictures) this car is 1 of 174. Body: -99% RUST FREE. This is an original Colorado car and with our arid climate cars don't rust here the way they do in other parts of the country. -Original paint! It has some checking and cracks and hard water stains typical of a vehicle this age, but it does still polish up nicely. -The sheet metal has some dents, dings and scratches as you would expect, with a bigger dent/crease on the right quarter panel Interior: -Nice original vinyl/cloth interior -The carpet shows some wear near the door openings -There's a split in fabric on the driver's seat, and a cut from the original owner's buck knife that he carried on his belt -There's a large crack/split in the dash pad right in front of the steering wheel which could easily be covered with a pad or cap. -Newer Blaupunkt stereo and Pioneer speakers Mechanical: -72,669 original miles (may increase slightly as we're still driving it on weekends) -390GT engine, rebuilt ---We pulled the engine because the gaskets had dried out while sitting and it leaked badly, and figured it was a good time to correct a few things. ---The engine was honed, and new rings, bearings, gaskets were installed ---Hard exhaust valve seats were installed so the engine could run on modern unleaded gas. ---The high compression pistons were replaced with 9.5:1 pistons so modern low octane pump gas could be used. ---A new aftermarket camshaft/lifter set was installed to regain some of the performance lost to the new lower compression. ---An electronic ignition has also been installed in the car (Crane XRi points conversion with adjustable rev limiter), so no need to worry about adjusting or replacing points. It all fits inside the factory distributor and cap, so it retains the engine's original appearance. -A/C has been converted to R134A and blows cold -Heat works intermittently as do the controls to direct it to defrost or floor. -The master cylinder was recently replaced, and the lines bled/flushed with fresh fluid. -New wheels and tires ---Real Cragar SS wheels for that period correct look ---BF Goodrich Radial T/A's are the right diameter, so the speedometer is accurate -True dual exhaust with glass-packs, give it that potato-potato-potato sound kind of like a Harley. Not loud at all, but a nice performance sound.
