We're seeing a lot of interest in unique ones like this 2005 Thunderbird that offer a wonderful color combination that's not the usual yellow or red. And with just 30,628 original miles, it's exactly the kind of gently-used car that makes the best future collectable: one that you can enjoy as it appreciates. The color is called Medium Steel Blue, which isn't a very interesting name for such a dramatic color. Perhaps it's because we're so used to seeing brightly-colored T-Birds, but this one has presence. The finish is still deep and shiny, and like many of its siblings, this car has never been used in the daily grind. Instead, it has been a fair-weather friend since day one, and for that reason, the finish looks incredible. Only 1463 Thunderbirds were built in this color, making it one of the less-common choices and it was only available in 2005, the Thunderbird's 50th anniversary. Body gaps are as the factory set them, the nose is in excellent shape with only very minor signs of age and use, and the chrome details still sparkle, making this convertible look very sophisticated overall. We've sold a lot of these cars, but we can't remember many that had so many people stopping for a second look here in the showroom. The interior is equally subtle but just as attractive, with black leather seats with steel blue inserts just for a splash of color; the Thunderbird was nothing if not stylish. There are some very, very minor signs of use, of course, but overall this is a very well-preserved ragtop. The two-tone leather steering wheel shows the most wear, but it, too, is quite minor, indicative of the car's overall condition and level of care. Crisp, white-faced gauges contrast brilliantly with the rest of the dark interior and just about every feature you can imagine was standard, from automatic climate control to a list of power assists. There's a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system that sounds great even at speed with the top down and this particular Thunderbird offers heated seats, which extend the top-down season just a bit. The power convertible top is color-matched to the bodywork, as is the removable porthole hardtop that looks great with its tinted windows. And as you'd expect, the trunk is in as-new condition. Ford's 3.9 liter DOHC V8 wasn't a tire-shredding monster, but it worked just the way it was supposed to: quite, confident power under all conditions. The last decade has proven that it's quite reliable and with so few miles, this one is only just now getting broken-in. I'm sure there are modifications for these cars, but the best ones are just the way the factory made them, right down to the original air silencer and V8 engine cover that make everything look tidy under the hood. A 5-speed automatic transmission was the only choice in the Thunderbird and it's linked to an all-independent suspension that does a great job of balancing sporty handling with a comfortable ride. A muted dual exhaust system gives it a nice V8 burble that never gets rowdy and 4-wheel disc brakes are exceptionally powerful, particular on a car that never gets pushed to its limits. Bright chrome wheels have a familiar look but no curb rash or peeling, and carry 235/50/17 Michelin radials. Documented with a lot of original paperwork, manuals, and receipts, this is the late-model Thunderbird that everyone would like to take home. And for the moment, it's quite reasonably priced. It also offers a great color combination, almost every available option, and a lifetime of care that shows everywhere you look. Silver makes the Thunderbird look sleek, not vintage, and that's a nice contrast to all the pastel 'Birds you see running around. For a car that's been around for more than a decade now, the finish is in remarkable condition, a testament to both the care it has received and the fact that it was never used as a daily driver. It has never been wrecked and like probably every one of its siblings, it has never seen winter weather, so rust is a complete non-issue. Build quality on these cars was quite good, with sharp gaps all around and doors that close with a solid sound, rather well done for a car with a convertible top. The vintage T-Bird look is still there in small doses, particularly up front where there's a nice chrome grille and hood scoop, while out back, the big, round taillights are a 21st century take on Ford's favorite jet-age styling feature. Beautiful Thunderbird emblems resemble the originals with their inlaid turquoise details and a few well-chosen bits of chrome give this 'Bird an upscale feel. If you're going to pick nits, there's a small scuff on the rear bumper, but overall this car is really impressively clean for its age. The tan leather interior is a nice contrast to the silver paint and it's far more comfortable in the sun than black. It also appears to be years younger and miles fresher than you'd expect, with seats showing only very minor wear. The matching leather-wrapped steering wheel is similarly nice and there are zero modifications inside. Of course, on Ford's flagship, everything was standard, so you get ice cold A/C, power windows, locks, mirrors, and seats, cruise control, heated seats, and a great-sounding stereo that works well top up or top down. There were several different dashboard finishes available, with this one wearing brushed silver accents that look great with the white-faced gauges and turquoise pointers. It's strictly a 2-seater, but there's a well-finished package shelf behind the seats and a good-sized trunk that's fully upholstered in as-new condition. And like the 'Birds of the past, this one offers both a tan convertible top (power assisted, of course) as well as a matching porthole hardtop. The only engine available in the late-model 'Birds was a 3.9 liter DOHC V8 that delivered the kind of effortless performance that made the original so popular. It's not a racer, but it's competent and has a great V8 growl thanks to a modified exhaust system that dumped the rear resonators. It starts easily, idles smoothly, and moves the tidy convertible with gusto but never threatens to get unruly. A 5-speed automatic transmission was the only choice, and it, too, specializes in always being in the right gear without attracting a lot of attention. An all-independent suspension handles well but doesn't jostle occupants and the 4-wheel discs are powerful. In short, all the hardware is dedicated to making your drive as effortless as possible without taking away any of the fun. Handsome polished wheels are in great shape and now carry 235/50/17 Yokohama radials. This Thunderbird neatly balances price and quality with fun and comfort, making it a great choice for a late-model hobby car. For those of you looking for one to simply drive and enjoy (you know, like you're supposed to), this 2004 Thunderbird may be a better fit. It's beautifully preserved, but it's been driven and enjoyed resulting in a very affordable price that puts you in an A-list collectable for a fraction of the price of all the others. If you're looking for a convertible to enjoy, it's hard to beat a bright red two-seater. When Ford reintroduced the Thunderbird, they knew that the things that made the originals so popular would still work today, so there's definitely a familial resemblance there. And while this one is the rare Thunderbird that's been driven and enjoyed, it has obviously not been abused and has not seen inclement weather, so it still looks fantastic. Obviously the body fit is done to factory standards since it's never been apart or wrecked, and the factory paint on the Thunderbirds was actually extremely good thanks to the special dedicated assembly line that built them; obviously they could afford to take a little extra time on their halo car. Someone has taken exceptional care of this one, because it defies the past decade and looks quite fresh with a smooth finish that suggests a lot of Saturday afternoons spent buffing and waxing the paint. No, it's not perfect, but the chrome bumper shines up well, the nose hasn't been sandblasted, and the shine is deep. Nice! The black leather interior is classic and understated and works very well with the bright red paint job. Ford gave the seats a retro-looking vertical pleat that was definitely a tip-of-the-hat to the original, but nothing in the 1950s was as comfortable and well-outfitted as this car. Just about everything was standard on the Thunderbird, including power windows, seats, and locks, A/C (now with all-new components), and a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system with CD changer. This one also carries heated seats so you can extend top-down weather into the autumn months. White-faced gauges look classic and elegant, which is the Thunderbird's specialty, and the airbag cover sports a traditional Thunderbird logo with the same simulated turquoise inserts that the original wore. As with the exterior, everything remains in excellent shape, including the black power canvas convertible top and nicely finished trunk. The Thunderbird received the same 3.9 liter V8 as the Lincoln LS, and with smooth horsepower and plenty of effortless torque, it's the right choice. This was never intended to be a sports car, but instead it gathers speed without working hard and makes a subdued V8 hum that sounds right. Having proven itself over the last decade, it turns out that this engine is incredibly reliable and in this car, the ultra-clean engine runs superbly. Only 3791 Inspiration Yellow examples were built, and of the 2002 colors, this one seems to have the strongest connection with the cars of the past that inspired it. Pastels were in vogue when the first Thunderbirds hit the streets, and this modern-day tribute loves the soft colors just as much. Clearly only used on special occasions, it's in awesome condition with no signs of accident damage or neglect, and with the way the paint feels under your fingertips, it's pretty obvious that someone has been busy washing and waxing this car its entire life. Everything is pretty much as the factory made it, from the doors that fit tight and close easily to the shiny chrome grille that pays more than a passing tribute to the 1957 models. Ford's attention to detail on these halo models pays off big when things like the molded plastic bumpers and even the side mirrors are exactly matched to the bodywork. Nice work, Ford! The interior is every bit as flashy as the '50s styling, and I suspect that nobody will complain about the black and yellow leather chairs in this 'Bird. The exterior's tribute to the past is one thing, but the interior is completely modern and comfortable enough to drive daily. The seats show only very minor signs of use and no damage, with an inviting look that asks you to take a long road trip. Everything you can imagine was standard equipment, from power windows to a powerful sound system. White-faced gauges are a concession to modern styling, but their markings are clear and easy to read and they use cool turquoise pointers that are perhaps a nod to the original cars, which used turquoise as a link to Native American art. Thunderbird logos throughout the interior also pay tribute to the originals with turquoise-colored inserts, and you'll find similar logos embossed on the seats. A black convertible top is there for emergencies, along with a color-matched hardtop that seals up as well as a coupe. Ford's reliable and well-sorted 4.0-liter DOHC V8, the same one that powered other Lincoln motorcars, was the only choice in the T-Bird. Smooth but with enough performance to match its looks, it provides effortless acceleration at any speed. Never intended to be a sports car (much like its ancestors), it's instead composed and confident, ready to scoot away from traffic or loaf along the highway for hours on end. The engine bay's tidy looks suggest careful maintenance and an owner who cared about keeping up appearances, while the chassis looks like it's never even seen a puddle, let alone rain or snow. Dual exhaust makes for a fun soundtrack during top-down motoring, and shiny 17-inch chrome alloy wheels and Michelin all-season radials make for both sporting and comfortable cruising.
