The 1956 models in particular are the archetypal 1950s cruisers, with the spare moved outside, a more powerful V8 under the hood, and a top that goes down. Thanks to just two owners who always ensured that it was ready to hit the road on a moment's notice, it's in just the right shape for your next road trip. Code L Peacock Blue was new for 1956, but nobody can argue that it doesn't look great. It says "L" on the trim tag, making Peacock Blue the original color, and the bright pastel finish looks exactly right on the 2-seater's famous shape. The paint job is older and the car has been driven on a pretty normal basis, but that doesn't diminish the Thunderbird's appeal one bit. Gaps are quite good, particularly for a convertible, and you'll note this is one of those rare Thunderbirds that was delivered without fender skirts (they were actually optional). Up close you can see a few signs of age, but you won't notice from the driver's seat, nor will the folks watching you drive by with envy in their hearts ever notice. Chrome and trim are good, with details that make the first-generation Thunderbird so special. Check out the vent doors in the front fenders, the chrome spare tire cover, and, of course, the Thunderbird script on the quarters. It all looks quite good. The code XC Peacock Blue and White interior works perfectly with the bright blue paint. Again, it shows some signs of use and age, but really needs nothing to be enjoyed immediately. The bench seat wears a recent seat cover that looks bright and clean with very little evidence of use. The carpets demonstrate minimal signs that they've spent the past few years in a convertible, and we're guessing they were replaced about the time the seat was redone. The door panels, with their two-tone vinyl faces and lovely engine-turned inserts, blend almost seamlessly into the dash, which features a big speedometer flanked by a tachometer and a clock. A modern AM/FM radio has been fitted to the center of the dash, that's the factory-issued steering wheel, and the slender wind wings keep it comfortable inside at highway speeds even with the top down. And speaking of the top, this car is equipped with a white folding top and the trunk has been carpeted to match the interior. Ford's erstwhile 312 cubic inch Y-block V8 provides power for all early 2-seat Thunderbirds, and over the years it has proven to be both reliable and plenty sporting for the 'Bird's luxury mission. Obviously this one was rebuilt a few years ago and driven since, but it's as reliable as ever. Wearing a factory dress-up kit with chrome air cleaner and finned valve covers there's no question about what kind of car this is. It's linked to a rebuilt Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission and a 9-inch rear end, and with a mellow-sounding dual exhaust system, it's one of the best vintage cruisers you can own. Experts will note that the exhaust has been routed under the rear bumper instead of through it, which helps keep the chrome bright and shiny. It rides on 205/75/15 Goodyear whitewall radials wrapped around factory wheel covers. Early Thunderbirds have always been great cars, and this one delivers on the promise of comfortable first-class accommodations for two on the open road. This 1955 Ford Thunderbird is a great driver with a comprehensive repaint, a smooth V8, and lots of personality. Finished in Fiesta Red, this Thunderbird is a great driver and all the wonderful details that made them a hit then are still in place. Many enthusiasts regard the '55 as the purest of the early 'Birds, without the add-on continental kit or tail fins that marked later models. The quality of the paint is good, with a deep shine over straight sheetmetal, and the results speak for themselves. It's a full color change (the car was originally Thunderbird Blue), so you know it was fully disassembled to make sure all the nooks and crannies received their dose of red paint. The doors align well, the hood opens effortlessly, and even the trunk with its pass-through to the fuel filler door has just the right fit. There's plenty of chrome, too, and it shines up nicely, including the rear bumper with unique bumper guard exhaust tips. The fender skirts fit well and give the car a long, low, sleek look that was a big part of its appeal, even though skirts were actually optional on the Thunderbird. A two-tone red and white interior was the proper choice when it was repainted Fiesta Red (again, it was original Turquoise and White), and all the soft parts have been replaced or restored. This one features a power bench seat and what might be the most beautiful door panels ever created. That strip of engine-turned aluminum that stretches across the interior is pure '50s cool, with a touch of race car thrown in, and it couldn't be in a more appropriate vehicle. The gauges appear original and there aren't many cooler designs than the speedometer with the plexiglass rear window to light it from within. Ford designers aimed for a sporty European feel, so you got a tachometer to the left of the steering column and it's always fun to watch. Remarkably, when you bought a new Thunderbird in 1955, you had a no-cost choice of either a soft top or a hard top, but getting both cost extra, and the original owner obviously chose the removable hardtop, which was painted white to offer some contrast that really makes this 'Bird look sharp. And no, the 1955 Thunderbird hardtop did not have the legendary "porthole" window; that came later. For 1955, the only engine available was a 292 cubic inch Y-block V8 fed by a rudimentary ram-air system through the hood scoop. Finished in bright red engine enamel, the 'Birds got a lot of chrome and aluminum dress-up components, most notably those beautiful finned valve covers. It's not detailed for show any longer, but it's neatly maintained and it runs superbly, which makes this Thunderbird a joy to drive. Underneath, you'll find a Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission as a willing travel partner, and a pleasant-sounding dual exhaust system with just a hint of V8 burble. Handsome 15-inch wheels with full wheel covers are a conservative choice and wear 205/75/15 Goodyear whitewall radials. This Thunderbird delivers on its promise of performance and sophistication, even today. We're seeing a lot of interest in unique ones like this 2005 Thunderbird that offer a wonderful color combination that's not the usual yellow or red. And with just 30,628 original miles, it's exactly the kind of gently-used car that makes the best future collectable: one that you can enjoy as it appreciates. The color is called Medium Steel Blue, which isn't a very interesting name for such a dramatic color. Perhaps it's because we're so used to seeing brightly-colored T-Birds, but this one has presence. The finish is still deep and shiny, and like many of its siblings, this car has never been used in the daily grind. Instead, it has been a fair-weather friend since day one, and for that reason, the finish looks incredible. Only 1463 Thunderbirds were built in this color, making it one of the less-common choices and it was only available in 2005, the Thunderbird's 50th anniversary. Body gaps are as the factory set them, the nose is in excellent shape with only very minor signs of age and use, and the chrome details still sparkle, making this convertible look very sophisticated overall. We've sold a lot of these cars, but we can't remember many that had so many people stopping for a second look here in the showroom. The interior is equally subtle but just as attractive, with black leather seats with steel blue inserts just for a splash of color; the Thunderbird was nothing if not stylish. There are some very, very minor signs of use, of course, but overall this is a very well-preserved ragtop. The two-tone leather steering wheel shows the most wear, but it, too, is quite minor, indicative of the car's overall condition and level of care. Crisp, white-faced gauges contrast brilliantly with the rest of the dark interior and just about every feature you can imagine was standard, from automatic climate control to a list of power assists. There's a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system that sounds great even at speed with the top down and this particular Thunderbird offers heated seats, which extend the top-down season just a bit. The power convertible top is color-matched to the bodywork, as is the removable porthole hardtop that looks great with its tinted windows. And as you'd expect, the trunk is in as-new condition. Ford's 3.9 liter DOHC V8 wasn't a tire-shredding monster, but it worked just the way it was supposed to: quite, confident power under all conditions. The last decade has proven that it's quite reliable and with so few miles, this one is only just now getting broken-in. I'm sure there are modifications for these cars, but the best ones are just the way the factory made them, right down to the original air silencer and V8 engine cover that make everything look tidy under the hood. A 5-speed automatic transmission was the only choice in the Thunderbird and it's linked to an all-independent suspension that does a great job of balancing sporty handling with a comfortable ride. A muted dual exhaust system gives it a nice V8 burble that never gets rowdy and 4-wheel disc brakes are exceptionally powerful, particular on a car that never gets pushed to its limits. Bright chrome wheels have a familiar look but no curb rash or peeling, and carry 235/50/17 Michelin radials. Documented with a lot of original paperwork, manuals, and receipts, this is the late-model Thunderbird that everyone would like to take home. And for the moment, it's quite reasonably priced. It also offers a great color combination, almost every available option, and a lifetime of care that shows everywhere you look. Silver makes the Thunderbird look sleek, not vintage, and that's a nice contrast to all the pastel 'Birds you see running around. For a car that's been around for more than a decade now, the finish is in remarkable condition, a testament to both the care it has received and the fact that it was never used as a daily driver. It has never been wrecked and like probably every one of its siblings, it has never seen winter weather, so rust is a complete non-issue. Build quality on these cars was quite good, with sharp gaps all around and doors that close with a solid sound, rather well done for a car with a convertible top. The vintage T-Bird look is still there in small doses, particularly up front where there's a nice chrome grille and hood scoop, while out back, the big, round taillights are a 21st century take on Ford's favorite jet-age styling feature. Beautiful Thunderbird emblems resemble the originals with their inlaid turquoise details and a few well-chosen bits of chrome give this 'Bird an upscale feel. If you're going to pick nits, there's a small scuff on the rear bumper, but overall this car is really impressively clean for its age. The tan leather interior is a nice contrast to the silver paint and it's far more comfortable in the sun than black. The matching leather-wrapped steering wheel is similarly nice and there are zero modifications inside. Of course, on Ford's flagship, everything was standard, so you get ice cold A/C, power windows, locks, mirrors, and seats, cruise control, heated seats, and a great-sounding stereo that works well top up or top down. There were several different dashboard finishes available, with this one wearing brushed silver accents that look great with the white-faced gauges and turquoise pointers. It's strictly a 2-seater, but there's a well-finished package shelf behind the seats and a good-sized trunk that's fully upholstered in as-new condition. And like the 'Birds of the past, this one offers both a tan convertible top (power assisted, of course) as well as a matching porthole hardtop. The only engine available in the late-model 'Birds was a 3.9 liter DOHC V8 that delivered the kind of effortless performance that made the original so popular. It's not a racer, but it's competent and has a great V8 growl thanks to a modified exhaust system that dumped the rear resonators. It starts easily, idles smoothly, and moves the tidy convertible with gusto but never threatens to get unruly. A 5-speed automatic transmission was the only choice, and it, too, specializes in always being in the right gear without attracting a lot of attention. No longer bargain-basement specials, cars like this pretty white-on-black '60 T-Bird hardtop are seriously hot collectables that are also exceptionally nice to drive. The classic combinations never go out of style, and the Thunderbird wears white paint better than most of its contemporaries. It's not bright refrigerator white, of course, but a creamy soft white that nails the Corinthian White Ford intended. The 1960 'Bird's many scoops and creases are subdued a bit with white, making this a handsome car that doesn't look fussy. Paint and bodywork are well done and while it's not a show piece, it does look fantastic heading down the road or at your local cruise-in. Delightful chrome details abound on the second-generation Thunderbird, including the little ornaments atop each front fender, the Thunderbird script on the rocket-shaped body side moldings, and the bright chrome "gills" on the rear quarters, again reinforcing Ford's fondness of rocket-inspired design. The chrome probably cost as much as a new Cadillac to restore, and the glass has a lovely soft green tint that's totally authentic. Experts will also note that this car features an ultra-rare factory sunroof (made by German company Golde and therefore called the "Golde Edition"), which includes the little "fence" at the top of the windshield header, a feature you've probably never seen before. Code 56 on the door tag means black and white vinyl, and there's no doubt that the guy who originally ordered this car knew exactly what he was doing. Dolled up like a Lincoln, it has infinitely more style and just as much luxury thanks to the beautifully finished buckets, center console, and gorgeous cockpit-style dash. The white-faced instruments are fitted into a shiny aluminum panel that looks like a high-end clock face, with secondary controls just underneath. Power windows with switches on the center console are a nice feature on any luxury car. The original AM radio is still in the dash, but like so many of its contemporaries, it's sadly not working. Overhead, the sunroof makes this 'Bird feel airy and bright and adds a dimension that you rarely find in any car of the era. The trunk is also finished properly, including a new mat set, full-sized spare, and a complete jack assembly. Under the hood you'll find a Y-code 352, which offered 300 horsepower thanks to a 4-barrel carburetor. It's plenty for the stylish 'Bird, which moves through traffic with an effortless ease that makes the driver feel like a million bucks. The engine bay is tidy, but not really detailed for show, and includes the original air cleaner painted to match the bodywork, bright yellow Ford-logo valve covers, and high-mounted expansion tank for the cooling system. Things like power steering and brakes are standard equipment and there's an astounding amount of room under the hood that makes service easy. It's backed by a 3-speed automatic and a set of 3.10 gears out back, meaning that this black hardtop will cruise all day at highway speeds without breaking a sweat. A brand-new dual exhaust system has a great, mellow sound that's appropriate for a luxury car like this and the undercarriage is shockingly clean. One is a Model A Ford, and the other is an early 2-seater Thunderbird. We would like to recommend this 1955 Thunderbird as a candidate for your garage, with its classic color combination and a restoration that's accurate but not too nice to enjoy as intended. You can spend more for a trailer queen, but the real appeal in the early 'Bird is getting in and having an adventure. It's what sold them when they were new and their V8 power and comfortable suspension make them outstanding road trip candidates. And when they're painted Thunderbird Blue (which is this car's original color, by the way), they have a timeless appeal that looks right and never goes out of style. As I said, the work is a few years old, but it's holding up quite well thanks to quality work and excellent care since it was completed. For many, the simplicity of the first-year Thunderbirds is immensely appealing, and the even gaps and straight panels on this one certainly emphasize the clean design. Interestingly enough, fender skirts were optional, and without them, this car takes on a sporting look that's very Continental. However, as a product of the '50s, there's still plenty of brightwork that was thoroughly restored with the rest of the car. It's not perfect, but it's extremely nice throughout with nothing jumping out as either too old or too nice. It also carries a correct code C turquoise and white interior that adds plenty of flash, but in a traditional Thunderbird style. The interior is quite stylish, with a power bench seat that loosely emulates a pair of buckets, and it's quite good overall, needing little more than a good deep cleaning to be ready to show at almost any level. The instrument panel shows off the "anything goes" optimism of the 1950s, with a wide band of bright engine-turned metal, a speedometer backlit by a clear plexiglass panel, and a tachometer, all of which are in good condition with clear markings. The original AM radio is still in the center of the dash, and remarkably enough, it remains fully functional. You may also be interested to learn that a soft top was a no-cost option over the hard top in 1955, and this one wears a snug-fitting white folding top that looks great and vanishes behind the seat for a clean look. The trunk is outfitted with a correct mat and reproduction jacking label. All Thunderbirds in 1955 used a 292 cubic inch V8, and while the dress-up kit was a dealer-installed option, I can't recall ever seeing one without it, probably because it looks so good. Combined with the bright red engine enamel, the finned valve covers and chrome air cleaner make the engine bay really sparkle. Correct reproduction hoses and proper clamps add a period-perfect look and it runs extremely smoothly, as you'd expect for a luxury-oriented cruiser. Even the exhaust manifolds are in reasonably good shape, feeding a dual exhaust system with a muted V8 hum. The 3-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission shifts well and with 3.00 gears, it's a great cruiser in the city or on the highway. Code J Rangoon Red is this car's original color and there are scarcely any better colors for a big ragtop. It has been recently refinished to a very high standard with a brilliant shine and excellent bodywork underneath, a feature that's especially important on a car with so many details in the sheetmetal itself. Shockingly, these are unit-body cars, but Ford engineered them well and even 50 years later, the doors fit well, the hood latches easily, and the spectacularly complex top mechanism works as it should, tucking itself out of sight in the reverse-hinged trunk lid. Experts will note that the rear fender skirts were removed to make way for the Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, and while this one is not a Sport Roadster, it does have the same sporty look that helps camouflage its size. And yes, there's a ton of chrome, all of it in excellent condition, from the delicate trim that runs along the tops of the fenders, doors, and quarters to the "gills" on the doors themselves, to the jet-inspired taillights. This T-Bird is a one-car parade anywhere it goes. The bright red interior is equally stunning, a beautiful mix of '60s cool design and high-end luxury. Buckets and a console were the only way to get your 'Bird in 1963, along with the "Tilt-Away" steering wheel that really does make it easier to get in and out of the low-slung convertible. Beautiful round gauges, each in their own pod, have a crisp, elegant look and the band of anodized aluminum trim that spans the dash adds some great contrast and isn't pitted or damaged. You'll note that this car sports fully functional factory A/C and a later AM/FM/cassette stereo, so I can scarcely imagine a better long-distance cruiser than this. New carpets are protected by Thunderbird-logo floor mats and there's plenty of room in back for full-sized adults. The wondrous convertible top, critical on these cars, is fully functional, stowing itself in the nicely appointed trunk with the touch of a button. Ford's strong-running 390 cubic inch V8 was standard equipment, because this was a lot of car to move around. With 300 horsepower on tap, it never works very hard and has a very smooth idle with a humming exhaust note that's completely appropriate for the luxurious 'Bird. Aside from a switch to R134a refrigerant in the A/C system and an on-board battery charger, the engine bay is quite stock, right down to the oversized air cleaner and expansion tank for the cooling system. Power steering and brakes are probably mandatory on something this size and the suspension, while plush and luxurious, doesn't seem to mind hustling a little bit. Underneath there's a brand new exhaust system that sounds awesome, a recent gas tank out back, and the critical unibody is in great shape. And those aforementioned Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels look fantastic, especially wrapped in 215/75/14 Goodyear radials. We've been selling cars for a long time but we get very few of these big 'Birds. They're still very much in-demand and you can't go wrong with a convertible that looks this good. It's beautifully preserved, but it's been driven and enjoyed resulting in a very affordable price that puts you in an A-list collectable for a fraction of the price of all the others. If you're looking for a convertible to enjoy, it's hard to beat a bright red two-seater. When Ford reintroduced the Thunderbird, they knew that the things that made the originals so popular would still work today, so there's definitely a familial resemblance there. And while this one is the rare Thunderbird that's been driven and enjoyed, it has obviously not been abused and has not seen inclement weather, so it still looks fantastic. Obviously the body fit is done to factory standards since it's never been apart or wrecked, and the factory paint on the Thunderbirds was actually extremely good thanks to the special dedicated assembly line that built them; obviously they could afford to take a little extra time on their halo car. Someone has taken exceptional care of this one, because it defies the past decade and looks quite fresh with a smooth finish that suggests a lot of Saturday afternoons spent buffing and waxing the paint. No, it's not perfect, but the chrome bumper shines up well, the nose hasn't been sandblasted, and the shine is deep. Nice! The black leather interior is classic and understated and works very well with the bright red paint job. Ford gave the seats a retro-looking vertical pleat that was definitely a tip-of-the-hat to the original, but nothing in the 1950s was as comfortable and well-outfitted as this car. They bring smiles to the faces of everyone who sees them, they're wonderful to drive, and are the stars of every car show they attend. So why not take this pretty 1957 'Bird home and find out what all the fuss is about? The bright Colonial White may remind you of Suzanne Sommers in "American Graffiti" and paired with the red and white interior, it's a look that has always been in fashion and always will be. Bodywork is nicely done, good enough to show with pride at the local cruise night, but not so over-restored that you pack it in when the sun goes behind a cloud. I'm especially impressed by how well the fender skirts fit, which is often a problem area on these cars, and with the fuel filler door moving to the quarter panel, the deck lid fits well and doesn't leak into the trunk. Clearly a good amount of cash was tied up in the chrome work, including the front grille and the unique rear bumper with exhaust openings under the jet-like taillights. If there's a more pure statement of 1950s style, I don't know what it might be. Inside, the bright red upholstery is both sporty and elegant, exactly the way Ford designers intended for their personal luxury roadster. Recent seat covers dress up the bench seat using the original ribbed pattern, and darker red carpets have been piped in matching red vinyl. The dash offers an engine-turned face that was the standard high-performance look in decades past, wrapping into the door panels that are simply gorgeous. Accessories include power windows, a power seat, and a Town and Country AM radio that still works like it should. The gauges appear to be in good original condition and seat belts were added for safety at some point along the way. Interestingly enough, when you bought a Thunderbird new in 1957, you could get either a hardtop or a soft top at no extra charge, but both tops was optional. As a result, this one has the lift-off hardtop, which gives it a practical, all-weather utility but there is no soft top behind the seat. And since the spare tire moved back inside for 1957, the trunk is finished with matching dark red carpets, a full-sized spare tire, and jack assembly. In 1957, the Thunderbird was running 312 cubic inches in the Y-block V8 and making a cool 245 horsepower with a 4-barrel carburetor. That chrome air cleaner inhales through the functional hood scoop, an early version of ram air, and the finned valve covers that were part of the dress-up package are still some of the best-looking ever made. It's pretty original under the hood, so don't expect perfection, but an engine doesn't have to be pretty to be a joy to drive, and this one runs quite well. You'll note both power steering and power brakes are included, so it's easy to drive, and there's plenty of evidence of careful maintenance throughout the years, even if it's a bit dirty. The transmission is a 3-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic linked to highway-friendly gears in the rear axle. Original steel wheels wear factory hubcaps and a set of newer 205/70/14 whitewall radials.
