With a slick hardtop roofline, a potent matching-numbers 406 under the hood, and a 4-speed between the seats, these were factory muscle cars before there were muscle cars. Nicely finished in traditional Corinthian White with a gorgeous turquoise vinyl interior, it's an upscale cruiser that can still hand out beatings on the street. Recently repainted and looking great, there's no way to make the Galaxie look bad. Ford hit the styling out of the ballpark, with crisp lines and those big, round taillights that reflected the '60s enthusiasm for the jet age. The paint went down over well-prepped sheetmetal, and even on those massive quarter panels, there's nary a ripple. The finish is expertly done and shows almost no flaws yet has a soft shine which always seems perfectly appropriate on these cars. Professional workmanship makes it stand out and the other guys at the show will always be frustrated when this car shows up because it'll attract all the attention. All the trim (and there is a lot of it) is in excellent condition. Both bumpers appear to have been re-chromed, and the long stainless strips that frame the sides of the car are straight and bright. This one also proudly wears a 406 badge, which reflects the engine living under the hood, but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet. A 4-speed with bucket seats and a console is a cool industrial-strength early muscle car look, and it works well in the Galaxie. Since the original interior was Chestnut, everything in the car was replaced when the rest of the car was refinished, so it remains in outstanding condition with no damage or overt signs of aging. The deeply pleated seats show exceptional detailing, which is often lacking in aftermarket seat covers, and even the metal buttons in the seatbacks have been retained. This one remains almost entirely stock, including the AM radio in the dash, and it's kind of nice to not see a group of aftermarket gauges hanging under the dash, especially on a car with this much performance potential. The 3-spoke wheel fits the Galaxie's personality perfectly, and that 4-speed shifter on the console makes a bolt statement in a full-sized luxury car. Gentleman's hot rod indeed! The trunk is highly authentic, with a reproduction mat, full-sized spare, and a correct jack assembly. As I mentioned, the engine is the original, matching-numbers 406 cubic inch V8, and it makes all the right sounds and amazing power. Dressed in black with gold Thunderbird valve covers, it's the ultimate early '60s powerplant if you're a Ford fan, both muscular and refined, making the performance seem almost effortless. There's a chrome air cleaner with correct "406 High Performance" decal, and a big four barrel carburetor living underneath that makes the most delightful sound when you crack open all four barrels. Beautifully tuned, settles into an even 750 RPM idle with only a hint of the cam inside burbling through the dual exhaust system. The 4-speed snaps through the gears, and the entire car feels robust and sturdy, as if it could take the abuse all day and with 3.50 gears in the 9-inch rear end, it's an easy highway cruiser, too. The chassis is clean, wearing a very light coat of undercoating for noise and heat control, and it wears 15-inch steelies with vintage Firestone redline tires that look butch and stuff the wheel wells properly. Fast with class, that's the Galaxie's motto, and this one shows you why. If you're a Ford fan, few cars can match the 406 Galaxie's reputation. With a slick fastback roofline and a great-running 352 cubic inch V8 under the hood, these were factory muscle cars before there were muscle cars. Nicely finished in Peacock Blue with a handsome black vinyl interior, it's an upscale cruiser that can still hand out beatings on the street. Repainted several years ago and still looking great, there's no way to make the Galaxie look bad. Ford hit the styling out of the ballpark, with crisp lines and those big, round taillights that reflected the '60s enthusiasm for the jet age. The paint went down over well-prepped sheetmetal, and even on those massive quarter panels, there's nary a ripple. The code B Peacock Blue finish has a good finish to it today, which always seems perfectly appropriate on these cars, and it makes a wonderful statement at the local cruise night where it will be warmly welcomed. All the trim (and there is a lot of it) is in excellent condition. Both bumpers appear to have been re-chromed, and the long stainless strips that frame the sides of the car are straight and bright. While the 390 badges on the front fenders do not reflect what's under the hood, it's always fun to have a little fun people while sitting at the local redlight. A wide bench seat is a cool industrial-strength early muscle car look, and it works well in the Galaxie. Some parts of it were most likely restored when the rest of the car was refinished, but there's also plenty of originality here and the line between new and old is hard to discern. The deeply pleated seats show exceptional detailing, which is often lacking in aftermarket seat covers, and even the metal buttons in the seatbacks have been retained. This one remains almost mostly stock, with the original AM radio in the dash, although there's an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo in a cool custom housing on the transmission tunnel, plus an upgraded A/C unit under the dash that looks quite authentic. The 3-spoke wheel fits the Galaxie's upscale personality perfectly and a pair of cup holders makes it practical for your favorite cruise night get-togethers. The trunk is highly original, with a carpet mat, full-sized spare, and a jack assembly. As I mentioned, the engine is a torquey 352 cubic inch V8, and it makes all the right sounds and amazing power. Upgraded from a 2-barrel to a 4-barrel carburetor, it is an excellent choice for your luxury muscle. Dressed in chrome valve covers with an open-element air cleaner, it's the ideal early '60s powerplant, both muscular and refined, making the performance seem almost effortless. Beautifully tuned, it settles into an even 700 RPM idle with only a hint of the cam inside and the burbling dual exhaust offers trick cut-outs just behind the front wheels for a dash of '60s street performance. The 3-speed automatic transmission snaps through the gears, and the entire car feels robust and sturdy, as if it could take the abuse all day. The chassis is clean, wearing a coat of undercoating for noise and heat control, and it wears 15-inch Torque Thrust wheels with 215/70/14 blackwalls that look butch and stuff the wheel wells properly. Fast with class, that's the Galaxie's motto, and this one shows you why. If you're a Ford fan, few cars can match the Galaxie's reputation. The ideal mixture of luxury and performance, this 1964 Galaxie XL500 packs big block power and a few thoughtful upgrades, as well as a gorgeous paint job that makes it a great piece of luxury muscle. A lifelong warm climate car, it's no surprise why this Galaxie is in such good condition, and today it's the ideal example of Ford's gentleman's express. The sloping rear roof was a recent addition to the Fairlane and Galaxie lineup, and helped as much on the NASCAR big ovals as it did in showrooms. The paint is late-model Ford Laser Red, which looks perhaps even better on the big Galaxie than it did on a Mustang. It was done a few years ago and still presents nicely, with a brilliant shine that really makes this car stand out. You'll also appreciate the Galaxie 500 trim, which was restored and installed on the car to give it an upscale look. The bumpers have obviously been restored and there's a very good shine on the stainless. Ford's jet-inspired taillights were still evolving in 1964, now enclosed in a very neat and tidy rear end, and those on this white hardtop are in excellent condition. Finished off with a black vinyl top, it has a high-class look with just a bit of an edge. The bucket seat interior is extremely handsome, reupholstered using burgundy vinyl that looks expensive, which was entirely the point in 1964. The seats are in excellent condition and thanks to correct materials, they'll probably look awesome for years to come, flanking a center console that's purely style for style's sake. The wide gauge cluster spans half the dash in front of the driver, and includes a massive speedometer and a fuel gauge, all with trick white faces that look awesome in the serious-looking interior. The extra gauge underneath is for the Air Ride system. The original AM radio still lives in the center of the dash, but a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit has been neatly installed in the center console and powers speakers throughout the interior. In back, the cavernous trunk is filled with more stereo gear, including a massive subwoofer enclosure and amplifier. This car packs a correct Z-code 390 cubic inch V8, which is topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. The tidy engine bay shows signs of maintenance, with proper Ford Blue on the block plus a chrome air cleaner assembly and matching FE series valve covers. Power brakes and steering are also part of the equation, and as a lifelong warm-weather car, you know rust is a total non-issue underneath. The recent Flowmaster exhaust system gives the Galaxie an appropriate muted rumble without being excessive, a fact you'll appreciate with a rear end full of highway-friendly 3.00 gears. The Air Ride system has been very neatly integrated into the original suspension and provides not only a smooth ride, but the adjustability to give it a stock look or a slick "in the weeds" profile. Bright chrome Torque Thrust-style wheels are always the right choice on a '60s Galaxie, and they're wrapped in 205/70/15 front and 225/75/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials This lovely hardtop is the most desirable of the Galaxies except for perhaps the convertible, and you can't argue with its performance credentials. With lots of power options, it's a car that you can still drive every day, or save it for warm summer days when you want to feel like you're at the wheel of something special. Combining elements from the funky 1970s and today leaves us with an unusual hobby car that will attract a ton of attention and still provides that incomparable big car experience. Yes, even the mint green paint works rather well on this car. This was still Ford's top personal/luxury machine in 1971 and yes, it is every bit as big as you think it is. However, the nice finish work that was completed a few years ago means that it looks great going down the road. Having spent its life down south, you don't have to worry about the stuff our northern neighbors fret about and the crisply detailed sheetmetal on this big Galaxie shows off just how good these cars really were. We like the fact that they didn't add stripes or other add-ons to change the car's personality, just gave it an honest look that contrasts brilliantly with the oversized rolling stock. Nice chrome bumpers, a handsome dark green vinyl top, and a slightly chopped look (it is not chopped) all combine to make a car that nails the "dare to be different" vibe. The stock green vinyl upholstery is pure 1970s American luxury car and given that it appears to be almost entirely original, it's in fantastic condition. There's a small split in the driver's side seat cushion, but you really have to know where to look to find it, and beyond that there's really not much to note. The seats are firm and all-day comfortable, the carpets are so nice that they almost have to be more recent, and the door panels have just a splash of faux wood to warm it up a bit inside. The wide speedometer is flanked by a gas gauge, but that's it for instrumentation, but this car is hardly basic because it includes factory A/C and an AM/FM/cassette stereo. The back seat, as you'd imagine, is big enough for full-sized adults to ride in comfort and if you want the ultimate car for that next family vacation, just check out the size of the trunk on this Galaxie. You'd practically need a ladder to climb out of there! A robust 400 cubic inch V8 moves this big car with ease. Never intended to be a performance car, it's instead torquey enough to keep all the accessories spinning while the car cruises serenely at highway speeds. The big Ford Blue air cleaner announces what lives underneath and the big A/C compressor dominates the rest of the engine bay. We can spot upgrades like a recent dual master cylinder, R134a refrigerant in the A/C system, and routine service items that keep it running smoothly. Power steering and brakes are, of course, standard equipment and for a car nearing its 45th birthday, it doesn't smoke and feels willing to play. The 3-speed automatic transmission is never asleep and it spins 3.00 gears in the 9-inch rear, so it definitely feels effortless on the highway. The burbling Flowmaster dual exhaust system gives it just a bit of an edge, a sound that's exactly right for a car hunkered down over 20-inch Boss Motorsports wheels with 235/45/20 front and 255/35/20 rear performance radials. Unusual? Yes. But it's also handsome and a pleasure to drive and the price is shockingly reasonable. Suddenly affordable means stylish, and that doesn't happen very often. Yet this Ford offers equally handsome looks, full-sized comfort, and a thumping 390 under the hood, all beautifully preserved to give it the look of a survivor with the heart of a muscle car. The first thing you notice about this big Galaxie is that wonderful all-of-a-piece look that only cars that have been well maintained for decades can offer. Look at how the light works on it, showing off the soft gloss of the traditional Wimbledon White paint, bringing out the details and drawing the eye along its smooth flanks. The door tag says this car was originally code P Silver Moss, so we know it's not original paint, but it looks wonderfully vintage. It's all in very good condition and shows the work of guys who seemed to care about what they were doing, and on a Galaxie, that's a lot of real estate to manage. Of course, a quality paint job is nothing without the details being right, and all the original Ford trim remains in place with a lot of shiny details that still look good despite being more than five decades old. And nothing says speed and performance like those twin jet-like taillights out back. Neatly straddling the original/restored fence, the interior is nicely finished in the original code 28 light gold color combination but it uses a more modern fabric for the seating surfaces. The original bench seat was retained but things like the door panels and dash are unquestionably original and in decent shape for their age. The factory instrument panel covers the basics of speed and fuel level, with a modern oil pressure gauge tucked underneath where it stays out of the way. It's likely that even the carpets are original and they're in good order and the dash pad hasn't been cooked by the sun. Upgraded with an Audiovox AM/FM/cassette radio in the dash, it's a pleasing cruiser that doesn't need any excuses because everything just looks right. The trunk is pretty basic, but at least it's obvious that there are no nasty surprises waiting for you there, and it does have a full-sized spare, just in case. In a big car, you need big power, and the 390 in the Galaxie doesn't disappoint. With a recent rebuild and a bunch of upgraded parts, it's every bit the NASCAR-bred brawler that you'd expect. Edelbrock supplied the intake and carburetor, and there's a mild cam inside the block to make a bit more torque. A chrome air cleaner replicates the original Hi-Po look and finned Holley valve covers were painted Ford Blue to match the block. It isn't super-detailed but that's not really the point with this car. However, upgrades like the dual reservoir power master cylinder are very welcome. It's backed by a 3-speed automatic feeding a 9-inch full of 3.00 gears so it cruises easily and moves like a much smaller car. The chassis is quite original, and the long-tube headers and brand new dual exhaust system give the 390 a basso-profundo voice that will make your hair stand up. Chrome wheels with baby moon hubcaps and 225/70/15 Firestone radials give it an old-school performance look. A great old-school performance car with an old-school vibe, this big Galaxie can still play hard with the younger kids.
