This 1930 Ford Model A roadster pickup is the modern interpretation of one of those cars, a neat little truck with 302 V8 power and lots of style. The roadster pickup is one of the most appealing body styles of the dozens that were offered on the Model A chassis. It's sporty but functional, a combination that works incredibly well either as a restored car or a hot rod like this. It keeps all the familiar Model A styling cues, so there's no question what it is, but thanks to some subtle tweaks here and there, it has a definite custom look. The burgundy paint certainly helps, offering a street rod look without being too flashy, which lets the bodywork simply speak for itself. The body is 100% steel, so it has that authentic look and feel that you can't replicate in fiberglass. Fit and finish are quite good, and it uses traditional tricks like the pinstripes on the belt moldings, a custom rear roll pan with built-in taillights, and a cool vintage trunk in the bed for a bit of enclosed storage. You'll also note that the bed floor is beautifully finished oak, adding to the rich, upscale look. The roadster pickup was never known for its larger cab, but this one has been skillfully "re-engineered" to allow taller drivers to get comfortable behind the wheel. Most of that is due to a custom bench seat that's been expertly upholstered in burgundy and gray vinyl with matching door panels. A custom dashboard replaces the simple Model A unit (that was actually the gas tank) and includes a billet instrument panel full of clean Faria gauges. There's also a tilt steering column with a billet wheel, traditional "spoon" accelerator pedal, and plush carpets that make the humble Model A feel a bit more upscale. The top is a lift-off piece wrapped in burgundy canvas, so it looks great and doesn't flap around, and it's worth noting that the original roadster pickups also had lift-off tops; they merely looked like they could fold. In truth, the folding roadster pickup top is a modern invention, so this rod gets it right. A 302 cubic inch Ford V8 lives under the rounded hood and it's a neat fit behind the familiar Model A radiator shell. A big Holley carburetor is fed by new braided stainless fuel lines and a fresh fuel pump and there's an HEI-style ignition system lighting the fires. Finned valve covers have been painted satin black to match the block, and we dig the industrial-strength look under the hood. There's a big radiator up front with an electric fan and long-tube headers feed a custom exhaust system that tucks up into the frame for excellent ground clearance. The transmission is an FMX 3-speed automatic feeding what appears to be a GM 10-bolt rear end, which hangs on a 4-link setup and coil-over shocks. Up front there's a traditional I-beam axle with hairpins and a leaf spring, and front disc brakes provide plenty of stopping power. The stance is exactly right, too, thanks to a big-n-little combination of aluminum wheels and 205/65/15 front and 255/70/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials. A cool little truck with plenty of power and upgrades that make it comfortable for anyone to drive. For those who like to be a little different, this is a great alternative. Rugged, simple, with plentiful parts supplies and thriving club activities, the Model A is the perfect early collectable, and I bet you'll find one in even the most impressive collections. This 1929 Model A roadster pickup is one of the more desirable body styles that has recently come into fashion. The dark green paint is probably the car's original color, as Henry Ford had a fondness for darker colors, and it gives the tidy little commercial vehicle a ready-to-work look. There's no denying that the work is reasonably well done, with straight bodywork and a nice gloss to the finish, which is now a few years old. And any Model A without the black fenders is incorrect; as the saying goes, you could have your fenders any color you wanted as long as they were black. Black trim is also used on the belt molding at the tops of the doors, adding a little two-tone flash to the utilitarian bodywork, and the bed is fitted with oak planks that have a bit of patina, so you won't worry about throwing some stuff in there at the local Home Depot. There's not a lot of brightwork on the roadster pickup, with a black painted grille, accessory front bumper, and a side-mounted spare, which was standard equipment. Basic is the right word for any open Model A's interior, with weather-resistant materials and exactly zero creature comforts being the norm, but I guarantee you'll love every moment of it. The black vinyl bench seat is springy and comfortable, and wipes down with just a damp cloth. The steel dash is also the outside of the fuel tank, which is mounted above the engine to facilitate gravity feed to the carburetor. And the gauges consist of speed, fuel, and ammeter, with a single instrument lamp in the center. The big hard rubber steering wheel makes the A lively on the road, and houses the headlight control in the center. A black rubber mat covers the floorboards, and the carburetor is adjusted via a knob on the far right side. Remarkably enough the top on roadster pickups looks like it should fold, but it does not. Instead, it's like a removable hardtop. Fortunately, it's lightweight and easy to move all by yourself. On paper, the Model A's modest 40 horsepower from a 200 cubic inch inline four seems modest, but it makes great torque and delivers bright performance in the lightweight little truck. It also has a distinctive sound that fans recognize a block away. Carburetion and spark are brutally simple, and these cars will practically run underwater on a mixture of vodka and Aqua-Velva. The 3-speed manual gearbox is non-synchromesh, so brush up on your double-clutching, and the brakes are mechanical drums, so plan ahead. This truck has been dressed up with whitewall tires on the painted 21-inch wire wheels, adding just the right amount of contrast. Model As are simply great cars, and they always bring a smile to everyone's face. This one is as functional as it is fun, and I can guarantee many years of happy motoring behind the wheel. Not quite a two-door sedan, but more than a 2-seat coupe, the "Vicky" is one of the great styling achievements of the early '30s, and makes one heck of a foundation for a rod. Of course it's fiberglass, but where else are you going to find smooth flanks and undamaged floors, seeing how original steel bodies are as rare as honest politicians. Finish quality is quite good despite being finished several years ago, with super straight seams, excellent alignment of those massive suicide-style doors, and a lot of time invested in sanding the surface to make it smooth. Hugger Orange was never on the Ford color pallet, of course, but maybe that was an oversight because it looks phenomenal on the '33 Vicky bodywork. The grille shell was painted to match, and contrasting black burgundy are a traditional look that dates back to the earliest days of motoring. You'll note that the hood louvers are cleverly airbrushed onto the hood sides, there are flames at the leading edge of the hood, and a subtle pinstripe to highlight the beltline trim. We also like the King Bee-style headlights that look like they belong on the car, the smooth billet grille insert, and the inclusion of rubber running boards for practicality. Inside, however, it's 100% modern, with low-back gray tweed buckets and all the creature comforts you'd expect from a top-notch piece. The Vicky body style allows expansive room front and rear, so four can travel comfortably, yet it's a lot more stylish than a frumpy sedan. The dash has been smoothed and modified to hold a set of Auto Meter gauges, a cool set of aircraft-style rocker switches, and a custom enclosure for the tilt steering column. An AM/FM/cassette stereo has been installed in a custom enclosure under the dash and the A/C system has been neatly tucked out of sight. The back seat is big enough for life-sized adults and while it's not flashy, it's comfortable and very well executed. The engine is a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8, which shouldn't come as a surprise. As you can imagine, the car is a blast on the street, and drives beautifully without any high-strung nonsense that afflicts some rods. The engine bay is beautifully detailed with lots of chrome and billet aluminum, and someone clearly went the extra mile with the plumbing and electrical systems to keep it all so sanitary. A massive aluminum radiator and a custom electric fan and shroud keep it all cool. For easy cruising, there's a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission spinning a Ford 8-inch rear with 3.50 gears, so performance off the line is impressive but it's still comfortable on the highway. The completely fabricated frame and suspension features a Mustang II front suspension, power rack-and-pinion steering, and power front disc brakes for some serious stopping power. Handsome chrome Cragars offer a traditional hot rod look and are staggered for the perfect rake. This is a beautifully built rod that was finished just a few years ago. Fully sorted and ready to rock, you couldn't build it yourself for this price. With a Ford steel body and 'glass fenders, it has a wonderful old-school look and with reliable small block V8 power, it's entertaining on the road. Lots of fun in a great package! Bright red suits the jaunty little pickup bodywork just fine and none of the upright boxy shape has been cut, chopped, or otherwise modified. The distinctive Model A grille and hood are neatly rounded and butt up against that upright cab for a wonderful antique look and the bed out back has perfect proportions. Build quality overall is quite good, and while it was finished several years ago, it shows only minor signs of use and a great shine that always gets a lot of attention at shows. Fit and finish are what you get with a wood-framed Model A body, better than most and with doors that have a solid sound when you pull them closed. The fenders are fiberglass and wrap around the wheels tightly for that old-school look and all the formerly nickel-plated Model A trim has been painted body color for a cool hot rod look. The bed is, of course, trimmed in real oak planks and that aluminum tank is a 12-gallon fuel cell that feeds the relatively thrifty 350 up front. The interior is still sensible and simple, with a bench seat wrapped in two-tone vinyl that makes it look dressed up. Carpets on the floors help control noise and sound and are a big step up from the original rubber mat and wooden floor boards. Matching door panels give it a very finished look and things like a tilt wheel, air conditioning, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo mean that long-distance cruises are never out of the question. Simple round gauges monitor all the vitals and suit the simple, smooth dash board just fine. A Lokar shifter for the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission does an admirable job of replicating the original Model A handle and yes, the windshield still tilts open for fresh air. It's all a really neat way to bring old and new together pretty seamlessly. The engine is a tried-and-true 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 that's properly dressed for duty in a hot rod pickup. Polished aluminum pieces are used throughout to make it sparkle, and anything that wasn't polished or chrome plated was treated to more of that bright fire engine red paint. The accessories are pulled in tight to the block, so it all fits pretty neatly under the Model A's hood, and it's fed by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on a polished intake manifold. The chassis is by Roy Brizio, so you know it's right, with a Mustang II independent setup in front with power disc brakes, and an 8-inch Ford out back hanging off a 4-link with coil-overs. With 3.00 gears in the pumpkin, it's an easy cruiser at highway speeds and the current owner reports 18 MPG is possible if you stay out of the secondaries. It's got exactly the right stance, too, wearing big-n-little aluminum wheels with 185/70/14 front and 225/75/15 rear blackwall radials. A neat little truck that doesn't seem to be trying too hard to be something it's not. Clean, fast, fun, reliable, and surprisingly economical, it's a great way to cruise this summer.
