Black Titanium Template 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Description Odometer: 1,493 miles VIN: 12814815 Engine: 2,778 CC Inline-6 Cylinder Transmission: 4-Speed Automatic BUY NOW OR SUBMIT YOUR BEST OFFER: 949-478-2590 or [email protected] Mercedes-Benz W113 History: The Mercedes-Benz W113 is a two-seat roadster/coupe, introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and produced from 1963 through 1971. It replaced both the legendary 300 SL (W 198) and the 190 SL (W121 BII). Of the 48,912 W 113 SLs produced, 19,440 were sold in the USA. The W113 SL was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who created its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the "Pagoda" nickname. All models were equipped with an inline-6 cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, trunk lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tires gave the W113 superb handling for its time. The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright Bosch "fishbowl" headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the then already legendary 300 SL roadster. The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. The 280 SL came equipped with a 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 horsepower and 180 lb·ft torque, which finally gave the W113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last. The Example Being Offered: This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was sold new by Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz in Seattle, Washington on May 11, 1970. The original exterior color is Light Ivory (670 H) with a Black (040 G) hardtop, soft top and hubcaps. The interior is black with the following options: Auto Transmission with Floor Shift and Power Steering (Code 426), US Version equipment (Code 491), Outside Rear View Mirror (Left, 503), Becker Radio US Version (515). Stamps in the warranty book and receipts on hand show regular maintenance by the original seller dealer through 1992. Upon careful inspection of the records, it can be confirmed that this 280 SL was never a daily driver and certainly never saw snow or road salt. Records indicate the mileage from 1970 to 1980 was 46,500 miles and the mileage from 1980 to 1990 was 92,900 miles. From 1992 to 2012, the original owner did not drive car and left it in the garage for 20 years. The second owner bought the car in 2012 and it was immediately sent out for major mechanical servicing. All fluids, gaskets, and belts were changed, the brake system and calipers were rebuilt, the suspension rebuilt and the complete fuel system refreshed. Compression testing was done at this time as well and the documented numbers show between 160 and 165 across all six cylinders and leak down ranged from a low of 8% to a high of 11%. The exterior was repainted the original color Light Ivory (670 H). The interior was completely reupholstered in leather for the seats and vinyl through the rest of the cabin. New carpets and soft top were installed; the wood trim was sanded down and re-stained. The hubcaps were taken down to bare brass, re-chromed and then correctly painted to match the hardtop. The rest of the chrome was refinished as needed and installed back on the car. The engine has never been removed from the engine bay so it is the original engine. Current odometer reading shows 1,493 miles, which is the accumulated mileage since the restoration. A 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda Roadster, now for auction on eBay! Last-Year Pagoda: 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster The legendary 280SL "Pagoda" Roadster is a true automobile icon, communicating the joie de vivre of the free-spirited 1960s with its sexy bodywork and unbridled performance. It is more athletic and better-equipped than its predecessors. Power steering, four-wheel power disc brakes, air conditioning: all three were available on the W113. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) When new, 280SLs were very expensive and highly exclusive. Yet, many of these wonderful cars were eaten alive by the merciless rust cancer. To refurbish a car with many needs is almost always a losing proposition. And to buy one that has been completely restored will take very deep pockets. Ideally, you want to find a well-cared-for example such as this Deep Maroon beauty. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Roadster presented here was very recently refreshed as needed, with new chrome plating, weatherstripping, upholstery, restored wood trim, subframe bushings, A/C and transmission service, and a thorough tune-up. A professional appraisal stating it to be valued at $74,500.00 accompanies the car. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Built in October of 1970 as a 1971 model, VIN *113.044-12-021867* appears to be a perfectly rust and accident free car, equipped with both tops, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and AM/FM Stereo. Rolling stock consists of a set of correct narrow-whitewall 195/75-14 MICHELIN radials in near-new condition. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) With the factory steel pagoda hardtop mounted, the SL is weather-tight and could be driven throughout the colder months, if desired. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) With the hardtop stored away and the canvas top up, the Coupe morphs into a stylish convertible. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The tan canvas soft top is a special order item. It's in perfect condition, without any rips or fading. Rear window is crystal clear. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Pagoda's svelte coachwork features uniform door and hood gaps. Front fenders still show factory spot welds and "ridges" adjacent to the headlights. Paint is factory correct gray-beige (M-B code 158) over dark maroon (M-B code 460), with gray-beige hub caps, as per the small, metal option tag affixed to the engine bay. The period color combination's smooth and glossy finish looks very impressive. There are no bubbles, scratches, dents, rock chips or other imperfections that would cause the new owner sleepless nights. The lavish chrome trim is in excellent condition throughout; the headlight bezels are brand new. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The mechanical aspects of the 280SL are not to be neglected. Inside an immaculately clean, largely original engine bay rests the strong heart of the Roadster, its fuel injected 2.8-liter overhead cam inline-6 motor. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Having an excellent reputation as being almost bullet-proof, with its 7 main bearings and the factory-installed oil cooler, Der Motor always starts at the first turn of the key, runs exceptionally strong, and shows no signs of any bad habits, such as smoking or (oil) drinking. The under dash A/C system was fully serviced and blows ice cold air on demand. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Inside the flawless cockpit, the 280SL roadster's painted dash communicates the opulence of the 1960s, with intricate chrome fittings, deeply varnished, authentic burled walnut wood veneer, pinstriped VDO gauges, and a vintage-looking radio that features modern internals, allowing for connnection with an auxiliary source, such as a iPhone. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Above photos show the interior in more detail. Of special note should be the rust free rear pans, a known weak spot on all W113 cars. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) All locks, switches, lights, and gauges work as they should. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The entire interior was sensibly restored. During the course of restoration, the seats were completely rebuilt, including the horsehair pads, the carpet was replaced with the original, expensive, German material, all of the wood trim was replaced with burled walnut, and a new canvas convertible top was installed. Since this car had always been garaged, the original door cards were still immaculate and have been retained. Note factory door tags. Small details such as this set a well-cared for, original car apart from the rest. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This is not a photo out of a factory brochure; we took it last week, right here in our California showroom. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Before we go on a test drive, let's check out trunk and undercarriage! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The SL's sizeable luggage compartment looks every bit as spectacular as the rest of the car. From the original, ribbed, gray rubber mat to the fitted spare tire cover to the complete-looking factory tool kit: everything you would want to see on a show-ready SL is here. The only thing absent is the usual, moisture-induced trunk corrosion most SLs suffer from! Expect no less than worry-free quality from the undercarriage, too. It's perfectly dry and shows no corrosion. Items of note include a brand new stainless steel exhaust system and a new fuel tank. Click on the image to the left for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Above photos show the undercarriage in more detail. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) While good looks and health are certainly important, let's not forget that cars are meant to be driven. Hence, the bottom line: what's it like to drive this 44-year-old in today's traffic? Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) November 30th, when we took these photos, was just another lovely day in paradise. Starting our journey in Santa Barbara, we lowered the top, turned on the efficient heater and had a blast, zipping down to Ventura, and from there to picturesque Ojai. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Exercising this SL feels simply heavenly! The expertly refurbished steering and suspension are as tight as a new car's. No excessive play, no shakes or shimmies here! The automatic 4-speed transmission's shift points are precise; the power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes stop the car with authority. During the five decades we've been involved with classic European sports cars, we've hardly ever encountered a Mercedes Pagoda SL that drives as perfectly as this one. It's ready for a road trip of any length, right now. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Prices for fully equipped, two-top 280SL Pagoda Roadsters in excellent condition have doubled and tripled during the past few years. Especially the 1971 models seem to be in high demand, making them smart investments along with being superb drivers' cars. Now's the time to secure one of the "best of the last" W113 SLs for much less than the cost of a restoration. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The 2016 classic car season is almost here - now's the perfect time to give yourself the gift of a vintage Mercedes! You are most welcome and encouraged to view this fine automobile in Ventura, by appointment, during the auction, or have someone inspect it for you. Please, perform your due diligence before you bid.
