I am the 3rd owner and I believe this has been a CA car since new. I also believe the car has 114856 miles on it. This is probably one of the nicest 280SEL 4.5 you'll find in the country. 1978 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 280E 1978 Mercedes 280E W123 M110 Gas 2.8L DOHC Bosch Fuel Injection

This listing is for a 1978 Mercedes 280E sedan. A pretty uncommon car, as the vast majority of sedans were obviously diesels. It has the M110 2.8L DOHC I-6 engine with Bosch fuel injection. It runs great. Strong, smooth acceleration and smooth shifts. Cold-start circuit doesn't work so good--it has a rough idle until it warms up. But once it warms up it runs beautifully. Passes California emissions. Many new parts, see below for a list. The bodywork is in great shape; there is no rust any where on the car. It's been a local so-cal car since new--I have some notes on the car's history that I can relay to the new owner. Paint is in great shape, no cracks or major dings. There was paint repair to the lower right rear quarter panel at some point but the bodywork inside the trunk shows no signs of body filler--a previous owner rubbed the wheel arch against a post. The odometer quit running last year around 165k miles. It is not my primary driver so I believe it has around 175k or so on it now. It doesn't burn or leak oil; stays clean between changes. In fact it doesn't leak anything at all--a welcome surprise from a W123. Also of particular note: The vacuum power door locks work, including the trunk lock. Clock works (as always) and the sound system is modern, with Bluetooth and aux inputs with remote. Suspension is in excellent condition; all shocks are new. New brake pads all around. Rides beautifully, especially on the freeway--though the steering gear is worn and it has some play. Just the same it tracks great on the highway. The gas engine makes this car much much nicer for commuting than the diesel, as it will cruise at 70mph in LA traffic with power to spare, and much quieter than the diesel at any speed. The climate control and heat work fine--though the A/C does not blow cold. The A/C system actually is holding a charge, but I can't get the compressor to come on. The compressor clutch may be bad? The interior is in fair condition. The driver's seat has support but the MBTex is worn and beginning to crack. It has cracked and torn on the front passenger seat, and the stuffing/horse hair has failed on that side as well. The rear seatback horsehair is also collapsed, though the lower seat cushion seems to be OK. Carpet is decent except for driver's floor mat. All door panels OK. The map pocket on driver's door is cracked. Headliner OK. Rear parcel shelf carpet is new. Trunk is in excellent condition with the original rubber mat, spare and jack. No tool kit. (See in Scottsdale - January '17) We will have this car and other quality classic Mercedes in Scottsdale from Jan 15 - 22, about 2 miles from the Gooding auction site. Prior to that date you can see the car in L.A. County. Introduced for 1970, the Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Coupe was fitted with a powerful V-8 engine. Referred to as the 'engine of tomorrow' by Mercedes, they put much of their effort into making the engine both powerful and smooth. Featuring electronic fuel injection and transistorized ignition, the power output was a robust 230hp. And no American car of that time could match the new Mercedes' mix of engineering, design, performance and quality. In a review of the car in the September 1970 issue of Car & Driver they said "You'd have to say that sustained high speeds are just about the name of the game with the Mercedes-Benz. We went out Interstate 80 a solid 20 miles, and returned, and ran all the way flat-out (well, maybe lifting just a touch for the long, sweeping turns.) Zoom! Out, and then (zoom!) back. and the car never gave any indication that it was doing anything strenuous. There was no rise in water temperature; no drop in oil pressure. That was a fairly convincing demonstration of high-speed capability, with the speedometer (which proved to be quite accurate) reading up around 125127 mph on the level. Impressive, too, for the quietness at those speeds ". Mercedes produced a total of only 3,270 coupes and 1,232 cabriolets of the 3.5 between 1969 and 1971. Other than the 600 Grand this was said to be Mercedes' flagship model, made to compete with the Rolls Royce Corniche (and priced within $500). At around $14,000 with options (almost everything came standard on the North American version), it was priced at almost twice that of a 280SL roadster. You really have to drive one of these unique cars to be able to describe the difference between the two. This very original 52,000 mile 3.5 coupe has the same beautiful color combination that was displayed in the sales brochure for the car in 1970, dark red paint (542G) with cognac leather interior. And it is complimented with beautiful burlwood on the dash and "A" pillars. The cognac leather interior is original and has the "proper patina" as one would expect on a car of this caliber. The chrome really tells the story of the car. (To re-plate chrome to look like this you would have to pay about $25,000). Personally, I have never witnessed original chrome of this condition on any other 3.5. The previous owner of this car had it in Arizona for approximately 15 years, and it is believed to have been in a similar climate most of its life. I have had a few of these 3.5 coupes (including top award winners) and yet nothing quite compares to the way this car feels and drives. This beautiful Pagoda Benz has recently resurfaced after 2 decades. An older gentleman kept it as his first love, even though he updated his personal vehicles every 5 years. When his new Audi R8 turned up, the old Benz fell out of favor, as there is no comparison. I got an estimate in Los Angeles for full replacement of interior that needs to be done for $1,000 to make new. I am a perfectionist. The dash does have a dash cap cover now and I never even looked under so maybe has a crack or maybe doesn't. Some wood in the car is new, new ashtray too, yet some has some lamination discolored so you may wish to replace at your leisure. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed, which was ordered only 882 times and thus is a highly sought-after original option today. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the predominant choice. Of the 23,885 280 SLs produced, more than half were sold in the US. The main change was an upgrade to the 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 PS (130 kW; 170 hp) maximum power and 180 lb·ft (244 N·m) maximum torque, which finally gave the W 113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last.[9] The M130 marked the final evolution of Mercedes-Benz' venerable SOHC M180 inline-six, before it was superseded by the entirely new DOHC M110 inline-six introduced with R107 1974 European 280 SL models. For some time, it was also used in the W 109 300 S-Class, where it retired the expensive 3 liter M189 alloy inline-six. 1971 is the last year the 280 SL was manufactured, and highly desirable to many collectors.
