No Expense Spared!!! Fully Restored 280SL!!! 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL 2-Door Convertible Exterior Color: White Interior Color: Tan Stock Number: 009756 Mileage: Exempt - 81,000 Fuel: Gasoline Transmission: Automatic Title: Clear VIN: 11304412009756 50 Full-Size Photos Vehicle Features & Options Ask the Seller a Question Email this to a Friend Start Credit Application Vehicle Description This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration done to a very high standard, and has traveled a mere 81,850 believed-original miles. The car comes complete with both the soft convertible top and the optional factory hardtop. This 280SL represents the final evolution of the model series that was originally introduced in 1963 and produced through final model-year 1971. Referred to as the “pagoda” Mercedes-Benz, this moniker was taken from the inverted roof shape of the hardtop. This Mercedes is really the ideal choice for an investment-grade classic car. The classic body lines have gracefully aged with time and arguably present better today than ever before, the 2.8L single overhead-cam fuel-injected inline-6 engine has a legendary reputation for both reliability and longevity, and there is an active manufacturer-supported parts-availability program. Mercedes-Benz was a forward-thinking company and was one of the first to integrate safety engineering into its cars. The central cabin area is structurally reinforced to protect the occupants with front and rear “crush zones” designed to absorb impact in the event of a crash. The 280SL was intended for grand touring with an emphasis on creature comfort combined with sharp cornering capability; hence, the majority of USA-specification cars came equipped with automatic transmission, air conditioning and power steering. The suspension dynamics of the 280SL is exemplary with 4-wheel independent suspension and the 4-wheel disc brake system ensures world-class stopping power. This is a classic car that you can drive and enjoy with no compromise to comfort, safety or performance. This 280SL presents beautifully in the factory-correct color DB050 White, complemented by a dark-bamboo leather interior with the classic MB-Tex grain and finish. Everything works perfectly and there are no rattles, squeaks or issues. Starts right up and settles into a smooth quiet idle. Fine examples are becoming harder to find and these are constantly appreciating in value. -Over $50,000 spent on total restoration -Two sets of keys -Books -Manuals -Tool kit -Service, maintenance and restoration receipts Additional Photos click on a thumbnail to view full-size photos Contact Information Naples Auto Collection Main Phone: (239) 285-4992 Email: [email protected] Vehicle Features & Options Vehicle Condition & History Shipping Information Get a Free Shipping Price Estimate: Destination Zip Code: powered by Contact Us For Shipping Quotes!! Mercedes-Benz Classics 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL "Pagoda" You can view this this original 280SL Pagoda through 1/22 in Scottsdale, AZ, about a mile from the Mercedes dealer. Please call or text 213-822-4485 or email [email protected] in order to set up an appointment. This is without a doubt the best example of an original Pagoda with impeccably preserved body panels. I guarantee you will not find a better example of an original, rust-free and accident-free 280SL. Extraordinary trunk floor that has never been touched up or repainted! Beautiful Medium Blue & Grey color combination! Only 85,651 miles! Click to enlarge any of the photos below. A link to a slideshow of all the enlarged photos is available at the bottom of the page. A Mercedes Dealership in Tennessee decided in 1970 to keep this awesome color combination Pagoda as part of their collection up until the owner passed away a couple of years ago. The car was partially repainted over the years and what we can see is that the hood was repainted at some point in its life and so was the trunk lid. Both parts being aluminum and easy to dent and most likely the reason for the re-spray. The odometer shows 85,000 miles but the condition of the car is it is more in line with one that has 30,000 miles. The interior is entirely original and in excellent condition. The soft top canvas was replaced some years ago. Also included in superb condition is the original hard top with the factory chrome ski racks. The car's original headliner and wood trim has been preserved in excellent condition. Some rubber seals around the hard top are old and bridle but expected from a 47 year old car. We removed the front bumper for cleaning and we were extremely pleased to find out that the front bumper is in excellent condition and it has the June of 1970 wet stamping from the factory. None of the chrome parts appear to have ever been re-chromed as they all look to be 100% original. We have its original tool kit and books for it; however no service records have been recovered. The brakes system performs just like new. Heater levers are operating nice & free and the aftermarket air conditioner cools really well and better than the old York compressor that is today obsolete. The radio and its Hirschman antenna are the ones from the car from 1970 as well the original windshield. The car has all 4 new Uniroyal tires for safety. The body is very nice and straight without any major dents or chips and the body panel fit is perfect. Please note: some of the photos might give the impression there are varying shades of blue due to lighting discrepancies; in reality, the shade of medium blue is uniform throughout. A compression was done and we have an average reading of 175 lbs per cyl. The car starts perfectly when cold and shifts as good as new (a positive shifting transmission as most of us know, they do not shift very smoothly but rather on the hard side, which is exactly how they should shift). Truly a nice straight car with no rust issues. We only wish we could find cars like this more often but it's because we know how rare a find like this is these days that we are so excited to present it to the world! Black Titanium Template 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Description Odometer: 1,493 miles VIN: 12814815 Engine: 2,778 CC Inline-6 Cylinder Transmission: 4-Speed Automatic BUY NOW OR SUBMIT YOUR BEST OFFER: 949-478-2590 or [email protected] Mercedes-Benz W113 History: The Mercedes-Benz W113 is a two-seat roadster/coupe, introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and produced from 1963 through 1971. It replaced both the legendary 300 SL (W 198) and the 190 SL (W121 BII). Of the 48,912 W 113 SLs produced, 19,440 were sold in the USA. The W113 SL was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who created its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the "Pagoda" nickname. All models were equipped with an inline-6 cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, trunk lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tires gave the W113 superb handling for its time. The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright Bosch "fishbowl" headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the then already legendary 300 SL roadster. The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. The 280 SL came equipped with a 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 horsepower and 180 lb·ft torque, which finally gave the W113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last. The Example Being Offered: This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was sold new by Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz in Seattle, Washington on May 11, 1970. The original exterior color is Light Ivory (670 H) with a Black (040 G) hardtop, soft top and hubcaps. The interior is black with the following options: Auto Transmission with Floor Shift and Power Steering (Code 426), US Version equipment (Code 491), Outside Rear View Mirror (Left, 503), Becker Radio US Version (515). Stamps in the warranty book and receipts on hand show regular maintenance by the original seller dealer through 1992. Upon careful inspection of the records, it can be confirmed that this 280 SL was never a daily driver and certainly never saw snow or road salt. Records indicate the mileage from 1970 to 1980 was 46,500 miles and the mileage from 1980 to 1990 was 92,900 miles. From 1992 to 2012, the original owner did not drive car and left it in the garage for 20 years. The second owner bought the car in 2012 and it was immediately sent out for major mechanical servicing. All fluids, gaskets, and belts were changed, the brake system and calipers were rebuilt, the suspension rebuilt and the complete fuel system refreshed. Compression testing was done at this time as well and the documented numbers show between 160 and 165 across all six cylinders and leak down ranged from a low of 8% to a high of 11%. The exterior was repainted the original color Light Ivory (670 H). The interior was completely reupholstered in leather for the seats and vinyl through the rest of the cabin. New carpets and soft top were installed; the wood trim was sanded down and re-stained. The hubcaps were taken down to bare brass, re-chromed and then correctly painted to match the hardtop. The rest of the chrome was refinished as needed and installed back on the car. The engine has never been removed from the engine bay so it is the original engine. Current odometer reading shows 1,493 miles, which is the accumulated mileage since the restoration. 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280SL EUROPEAN Model 107.042 Car Here is the chance to own one of the most beautiful roadsters that Mercedes-Benz ever made - 1985 Mercedes Benz 280SL roadster (VIN#WDB1070421A034738)! What makes this SL special, is that this is the TRUE EUROPEAN 6 Cylinder model, featuring more elegant and desirable short European Bumpers, and square one piece European Headlights!!! 1985 was also a last year of the production for the 280SL, making it even more special as only 2,838 280SL’s were produced that final year. THIS BEAUTY WAS JUST INSPECTED AND APPRAISED AT $24,000!!! 280SL was a special production model, and limited number of cars were produced each year from 1974 until 1985, as majority of its siblings produced were V8 models. Out of 237,287 R107’s ever produced ONLY 25,436 were 280SL’s, and after 30+ years of life number of 280SL's on the road today is much much smaller!!! Even though being inline 6, the engine delivers as much power as the US version V8’s, and being lighter car, its much more nimble and fun to drive in the city, and along the highway What we have here is a 2 LONG TERM owners - extremely well kept, documented and rare “Gray Market” 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280SL. Its desirable and rare Astral Silver Paint shines beautifully and Powerful Inline 6 engine purrs and runs strong as ever. Second owner purchased this beauty in 1994, from its original owner who imported it BRAND NEW from Germany in 1985. All import documents and German papers are with the car, including numerous maintenance records for this beauty from both owners!!! ONLY 125,678 ORIGINAL AND DOCUMENTED MILES!!! That is only about 3,900 miles per year for this 32 year old beauty!!!! You will see there are some “low mileage” SL’s out there, but do they have records supporting the stated mileage, how long ago odometer stopped working (big problem with older Mercedes!!), is it original cluster??!! Truth is many will have no records supporting their mileage!! In this case Mileage is correct and documented including all service records since day one and its first oil change!!!! There are thousands in service and maintenance records!! Both owners wanted to make sure that this beauty looks, and performs like the first day it left the factory! Whatever it needed it has been done on it!! When it comes to classic cars, after a certain period of time, the amount of care and maintenance that has been given to the car becomes much more important than the car's miles, as at that point many parts are newer and have been replaced, and the continuous record keeping and extensive maintenance performed by the previous owners adds a lot of value to the equation. In this case we have a thick folder full of service records including its all original import paperwork!! With this car you know where you stand, and all paperwork reflects its happy and easy 32 years of life!! With its rare and desirable color combination, documented pedigree, and the fact that this is true EUROPEAN 280SL, there is not a lot of R107 SL’s like this one on the road today!! About the car: Its Astral Silver (Paint Code 735G - astralsilber) paint has a beautiful shine and luster, and it truly makes this German Roadster look timeless!! Chrome is in beautiful condition, complete with healthy luster, and this beautiful roadster is a head turner and conversation piece everywhere it goes. This Mercedes is only a 2 owner car since new, and its second owner owned it since 1994! This SL was Sunny Florida car its whole life! Body is straight and solid, and all doors, hood, and trunk are operating with ease! It has been always garaged, pampered and kept away from rain and bad weather. Factory VIN # stamping on the front radiator support is another sign of originality of this car. (Please see pictures) This SL comes with both soft top, and the hard top! Black Canvas Soft top is in excellent condition, and it is very easy to operate. Back Plastic windows are crystal clear! Hard top is also in excellent condition, including all original Sekurit glass, and the headliner which is clean, and rips and tears free!! Another sign of originality of this beautiful car is stamping mark on the Hard Top (34738) which reflects the last 5 digits of the vehicles VIN number!!! -Interior Its elegant Black interior is in wonderful condition! Leather seats are in excellent condition, new looking, and they are very supportive and comfortable! This Mercedes comes with power windows, and they are working as they should! Everything on this car is working, from power windows, original Becker Grand Prix Radio to the power antenna!! Just take a look at the pictures, and you will get an idea about the condition of this car, how nicely it is kept, and how beautiful it is. It really does not get any better than this! -Engine & Transmission Bullet Proof 2.8 Liter inline 6 Engine is strong and powerful as ever with only 125,000 original and documented miles!! Very low considering that this beauty is 32 years old, and it was only driven about 3,900 miles per year!! Engine starts up with ease hot or cold, and it has no problems cruising down the highway at 80+ MPH!!! All of its maintenance and mileage is documented since day one and its first oil change and there are thousands and thousands in documents and receipts, as it owners wanted to make sure that his baby runs just as good as it looks!!! Whatever this car needed, it was always addressed without a wait, or expenses spared! Automatic Transmission shifts smoothly and effortlessly through every gear. This German Roadster handles great at the high speeds, and it is very comfortable. Air Condition works as it should, and this car is ready for some topless fun!!!! There is nothing better than driving down the road in the Classic SL, with the top down, and the wind in your hair!!! This beautiful roadster comes ALL complete with its original import papers, books and manuals, original data card, original tool set, original Mercedes-Benz First Aid kit, and also its original Safety Triangle sign (PLEASE SEE PICTURES). To find a vehicle that is 30+ years old, documented since day one its going to be a very hard task! This is a very nicely kept and complete Mercedes, that has been loved its whole life, it was never abused, and it truly shows!! A 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda Roadster, now for auction on eBay! Last-Year Pagoda: 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster The legendary 280SL "Pagoda" Roadster is a true automobile icon, communicating the joie de vivre of the free-spirited 1960s with its sexy bodywork and unbridled performance. It is more athletic and better-equipped than its predecessors. Power steering, four-wheel power disc brakes, air conditioning: all three were available on the W113. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) When new, 280SLs were very expensive and highly exclusive. Yet, many of these wonderful cars were eaten alive by the merciless rust cancer. To refurbish a car with many needs is almost always a losing proposition. And to buy one that has been completely restored will take very deep pockets. Ideally, you want to find a well-cared-for example such as this Deep Maroon beauty. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Roadster presented here was very recently refreshed as needed, with new chrome plating, weatherstripping, upholstery, restored wood trim, subframe bushings, A/C and transmission service, and a thorough tune-up. A professional appraisal stating it to be valued at $74,500.00 accompanies the car. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Built in October of 1970 as a 1971 model, VIN *113.044-12-021867* appears to be a perfectly rust and accident free car, equipped with both tops, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and AM/FM Stereo. Rolling stock consists of a set of correct narrow-whitewall 195/75-14 MICHELIN radials in near-new condition. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) With the factory steel pagoda hardtop mounted, the SL is weather-tight and could be driven throughout the colder months, if desired. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) With the hardtop stored away and the canvas top up, the Coupe morphs into a stylish convertible. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The tan canvas soft top is a special order item. It's in perfect condition, without any rips or fading. Rear window is crystal clear. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Pagoda's svelte coachwork features uniform door and hood gaps. Front fenders still show factory spot welds and "ridges" adjacent to the headlights. Paint is factory correct gray-beige (M-B code 158) over dark maroon (M-B code 460), with gray-beige hub caps, as per the small, metal option tag affixed to the engine bay. The period color combination's smooth and glossy finish looks very impressive. There are no bubbles, scratches, dents, rock chips or other imperfections that would cause the new owner sleepless nights. The lavish chrome trim is in excellent condition throughout; the headlight bezels are brand new. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The mechanical aspects of the 280SL are not to be neglected. Inside an immaculately clean, largely original engine bay rests the strong heart of the Roadster, its fuel injected 2.8-liter overhead cam inline-6 motor. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Having an excellent reputation as being almost bullet-proof, with its 7 main bearings and the factory-installed oil cooler, Der Motor always starts at the first turn of the key, runs exceptionally strong, and shows no signs of any bad habits, such as smoking or (oil) drinking. The under dash A/C system was fully serviced and blows ice cold air on demand. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Inside the flawless cockpit, the 280SL roadster's painted dash communicates the opulence of the 1960s, with intricate chrome fittings, deeply varnished, authentic burled walnut wood veneer, pinstriped VDO gauges, and a vintage-looking radio that features modern internals, allowing for connnection with an auxiliary source, such as a iPhone. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Above photos show the interior in more detail. Of special note should be the rust free rear pans, a known weak spot on all W113 cars. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) All locks, switches, lights, and gauges work as they should. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The entire interior was sensibly restored. During the course of restoration, the seats were completely rebuilt, including the horsehair pads, the carpet was replaced with the original, expensive, German material, all of the wood trim was replaced with burled walnut, and a new canvas convertible top was installed. Since this car had always been garaged, the original door cards were still immaculate and have been retained. Note factory door tags. Small details such as this set a well-cared for, original car apart from the rest. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This is not a photo out of a factory brochure; we took it last week, right here in our California showroom. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Before we go on a test drive, let's check out trunk and undercarriage! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The SL's sizeable luggage compartment looks every bit as spectacular as the rest of the car. From the original, ribbed, gray rubber mat to the fitted spare tire cover to the complete-looking factory tool kit: everything you would want to see on a show-ready SL is here. The only thing absent is the usual, moisture-induced trunk corrosion most SLs suffer from! Expect no less than worry-free quality from the undercarriage, too. It's perfectly dry and shows no corrosion. Items of note include a brand new stainless steel exhaust system and a new fuel tank. Click on the image to the left for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Above photos show the undercarriage in more detail. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) While good looks and health are certainly important, let's not forget that cars are meant to be driven. Hence, the bottom line: what's it like to drive this 44-year-old in today's traffic? Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) November 30th, when we took these photos, was just another lovely day in paradise. Starting our journey in Santa Barbara, we lowered the top, turned on the efficient heater and had a blast, zipping down to Ventura, and from there to picturesque Ojai. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Exercising this SL feels simply heavenly! The expertly refurbished steering and suspension are as tight as a new car's. No excessive play, no shakes or shimmies here! The automatic 4-speed transmission's shift points are precise; the power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes stop the car with authority. During the five decades we've been involved with classic European sports cars, we've hardly ever encountered a Mercedes Pagoda SL that drives as perfectly as this one. It's ready for a road trip of any length, right now. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Prices for fully equipped, two-top 280SL Pagoda Roadsters in excellent condition have doubled and tripled during the past few years. Especially the 1971 models seem to be in high demand, making them smart investments along with being superb drivers' cars. Now's the time to secure one of the "best of the last" W113 SLs for much less than the cost of a restoration. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The 2016 classic car season is almost here - now's the perfect time to give yourself the gift of a vintage Mercedes! You are most welcome and encouraged to view this fine automobile in Ventura, by appointment, during the auction, or have someone inspect it for you. Please, perform your due diligence before you bid. Please, note that this car is currently advertised on our Web site and on display in our Showroom. We reserve the right to accept a satisfactory offer and close this auction at any time. View our eBay StoreSign up for our Email Newsletter 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Convertible offered with a reserve Today, the W 113 Pagoda is considered a highly desirable collectors car, with current values for the 280 SL suggesting that it is the most desirable of the three models. This freshly restored example has been well cared for its entire life, it came to the currect owner in 1985, by way of California then Arizona. A rust free example, the owner decided to restore the car, and embarked on a comprehensive restoration which has just been completed. Most of the original interior was able to be retained it was in such fine shape- only the front carpet was replaced. Over 1000 hours were spent on the restoration of this stunning example. Featuring the desirable Air Conditioning, and finished in the desirable White with Cognac interior, this is the hot ticket as far as Pagoda Sl's go. The car runs and drives very very well, and can be pressed into immediate service, although I would go collect some trophies before touring the car. New wheels were added during the restoration- the originals go with the car-and the chrome wheel well trim is installed properly with the correct clips versus being screwed into the body. All the Aluminum under the hood has been polished, which really gives the car the extra detail it needs to separate it from every other Pagoda on the show field. This is a spectacular example. This is the finest 280SL we have had the opportunity to represent, and we sell a lot of these cars! If you are looking for the finest one you can find, look no further! We have many more photographs of this car, please click on any image to be taken to our full-size image list! The Mercedes-Benz W 113 automobiles were produced from 1963 through 1971. They were sold as the "pagoda roof" SL Class. The W 113 replaced the W 198 SL-Class in 1963 and was replaced by the R107 SL-Class in 1972. All models boast an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system adapted from the diesel motors. All are rear-wheel drive, but are also equipped with independent rear suspension, a feature that greatly improved road handling. Most of these early SLs were sold with both the removable hard top and a soft top in the so-called "Coupe/Roadster" configuration, but there was also a "California Coupe" version available that came with the removable hardtop but no soft top. In these models, the soft top well (between the passenger compartment and trunk) is removed, and a drop-down bench seat is installed in its place. The rear seat is small and not very useful, so these 2+2 models are rare but not especially sought after today. While the SLs are relatively heavy compared to other similar roadsters, weight was reduced in part by the use of aluminum panels for the trunk lid, front hood, tonneau cover and door skins. Production began in 1963 with the 2.3 liter 230-SL. These models were commonly 4-speed manual transmission cars, but a 4-speed automatic transmission was also available and popular for U.S. market cars. The 230-SL sported front disc / rear drum power-assisted brakes. They quickly gained popularity in the U.S. market, and this eventually led to more and more cars being built with automatic transmissions. The 2.8 liter 280 SL was introduced in 1967 and continued production largely unchanged through 1971 when the W 113 was replaced by the entirely new, and substantially heavier, R 107 350 SL/450 SL. Most 280 SL cars built for the U.S. market were equipped with automatic transmission. Manual transmission cars came with either a 4-speed tramsmission or the super rare ZF-5 speed. The ZF 5 speed is very rare sought after by American collectors. In the European market manual transmission cars were still dominant. 23,885 280 SLs were produced, of which 12,927 units went to the USA and 5,754 to other countries outside of Germany. Our Ebay Policies: Significant Cars is one of the largest Collector Car Brokers and Dealers in the Country.  Since 2003 we have worked hard to "change the way collector cars find new homes" by providing unparralleled web presentation of the cars we are representing.  Most of our cars have over 30 photographs, and these can be viewed by visiting our website (our eBay handle dot com), or by clicking on any of the photographs in the black background area of our EBay listings.  We welcome your call with any questions about any of our listings at anytime at 800-837-9902 and certainly encourage your personal inspection of any of the cars we are selling-just call us and we will be happy to set up an appointment for your to see and test drive the car. We realize that eBay is a difficult venue to properly evaluate an item as complex as an automobile.  You can feel secure bidding with confidence on any of our cars since we guarantee your satisfaction!  Should you win the auction and come to see the car and decide you do not want it for any reason, no negative feedback will result, any deposit you may have paid will be cheerfully refunded.
