Designed as the larger sibling to the 2-seat SL, the stretched platform added back seat functionality and a remarkably handsome profile that gives this car a look and feel all its own. With just two owners and a beautiful recent restoration, plus Mercedes-Benz's legendary build quality, it's a superb runner. This car was purchased by the owner's father-in-law in 1978, so long-term history is excellent. It was restored in 2008, taken down to bare metal, and sprayed with its original metallic root beer color. With a brilliant shine that's typical of high-end finishes using two-stage urethane, this car still looks like an A-list celebrity. There's absolutely no rust, thanks to a history in the warm southern US, and no evidence that it has ever been in an accident. The R107 platform was built like a Panzer tank, and as a result body gaps are exact, the doors open and close with a precision that will delight you, and it still seals up tightly to be whisper quiet on the highway. All the rubber (and there's a lot of it with the federally-mandated bumpers) is in excellent condition, and despite living in the sun, things like the gills in the quarter windows and the plastic lenses are beautifully preserved. Cosmetically, there can't be many nicer SLCs available anywhere. Inside, the leather interior, which was a rare upgrade over the standard MB-Tex, is equally nice. The buckets are firm and supportive and built to carry passengers great distances in maximum comfort. Other soft parts like the door panels, carpets, and headliner are similarly excellent. Sisal floor mats are a nice touch, which surely helped protect the carpets, and the darker brown dash top was purely intentional to help reduce glare. The SLC came standard with just about everything, including A/C, cruise control, power sunroof, and there's a great sounding AM/FM/CD stereo in place of the original Becker Grand Prix unit. There's also a wonderful wood-rimmed steering wheel that adds a bit of warmth to the interior and even the beautifully upholstered trunk shows almost zero wear thanks to a custom embroidered trunk mat. The 4.5 liter V8 under the hood was one of Mercedes' better powerplants. With a bubbly V8 idle and a smooth flow of torque that's more electric motor than piston engine, it makes the SLC a sporting machine that delivers entertaining performance. It's also as reliable as a wood stove, with most examples running for hundreds of thousands of miles with only routine maintenance. It's clean and well-maintained under the hood, and a fresh alternator is a welcome sight, as this is one of the lone weak spots in the car's specifications. The three-speed automatic shifts well, and the chassis is quite clean. Traditional Mercedes alloys look exactly right and carry recent 205/70/14 Michelin blackwall radials. This car also includes all the restoration photos and maintenance records, so you can buy with confidence. An impressive car for not a lot of money. Famously constructed from kits, they were a pretty successful way for the enterprising hobbyist to give himself something to do on weekends and end up with one of the better-proportioned replicas of the period. And it's still a blast to drive! Based on humble Chevrolet Chevette mechanicals, the Gazelle is the antidote to the more familiar inexpensive British and Italian sports cars of the period. It offers neo-classic styling that most folks will at least admire as it drives by, even if they don't know quite what it is, and with rear-wheel-drive and a featherweight curb weight, it's entertaining on the road. This one was built in the late 1980s and shows quite well, as it's only been driven about 7700 miles. For a fiberglass kit car, fit and finish are remarkably good, with even door gaps, a snug-fitting trunk lid, and glossy paint that is familiar to anyone who has driven, built, or even seen another Gazelle. This one is highlighted by a lot of pinstripes that accent the distinctive shapes and honestly, the long hood and sweeping fenders do look pretty good; the guy who designed this car got the proportions just right. Other details like the chrome grille, rubber running boards, and exposed side pipes are all part of the vintage illusion and everything remains in very good condition, so you know the car was loved and treated right. The seats are pure 1980s cool, one-piece buckets that look futuristic, even in the vintage-looking Gazelle bodywork. There's a matching rear seat that's probably best reserved for children or your briefcase, and a luxurious wood-rimmed wheel gives it an appropriate upscale feel. Yes, there's some wear and tear, mostly on the driver's seat and carpets, but overall everything is in good order. The custom-made wooden dashboard carries white-faced gauges that proudly spell out that they are "Vintage Reproduction" and there's an AM/FM/cassette stereo over there on the passenger's side. Weather protection consists of very 1929-esque folding cloth top and side curtains, but they actually give the car a very trim appearance and seal up better than a lot of cars of the target era. There's a narrow trunk out back, big enough for a few tools and supplies, and it, too, is nicely upholstered with matching tan carpets. Basing the Gazelle on the Chevette was a smart move. Everyone else was using VW Beetles or Ford Pintos, but the ever-reliable Chevette was a sturdy, well-built, rear-wheel-drive chassis that delivers decent performance. The engine is a 1.6 liter inline-four, which won't win any drag races, but it's bulletproof and you have to remember that they took about 800 pounds out of the car when this body was dropped on top. Parts are plentiful and it's easy to service, with good access under the tilting hood. A 3-speed automatic transmission makes it easy to drive and you'll quickly find that it starts when you turn the key and zips through traffic with ease. Disc brakes have decent stopping power and with the light curb weight, power steering isn't needed. As a ground-up build, the undercarriage is quite tidy and there's a new muffler that gives it a muted sound that doesn't give away any secrets. Shiny chrome wire wheels really dress it up and carry 205/75/14 whitewall radials all around. Inexpensive fun that stands out in a crowd, that's all the Gazelle wants to be. If that's your kind of fun, give us a call today! 1929 Mercedes-Benz Gazelle for Sale 1929 Mercedes-Benz Gazelle for Sale Stock # 2827-ATL Charlotte Showroom 5400 West WT Harris Blvd Charlotte, NC 28269 Local/International: (704) 598-2130 Toll-Free: (866) 542-8392 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Atlanta Showroom 213 Thornton Rd Lithia Springs, GA 30122 Local/International: (678) 279-1609 Toll-Free: (877) 367-1835 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Dallas/Fort Worth Showroom 5400 Sandshell Dr Fort Worth, TX 76137 Local/International: (817) 764-8000 Toll-Free: (855) 877-2707 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM CST Sat: 9AM - 5PM CST Email: [email protected] Tampa Showroom 4610 Pet Lane Lutz, FL 33559 Local/International: (813) 501-1630 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] TERMS OF SALE 1. Luxury machines like this very attractive bronze 1989 example could hammer the Autobahn all day at triple-digit speeds, coddling their occupants like no other car in the world. For a car that cost the equivalent of more than $100,000 when it was new, this is a great way to get incredible luxury at an incredible discount. Few cars have a more commanding road presence than an S-class Mercedes, and you'll have no trouble cruising through traffic with this handsome sedan. It's probably wearing its original paint, and it goes to show you what the best paint in the world can deliver, because it still looks great. Of course, some of that is probably thanks to an enthusiastic owner, but there's no denying that this car has led an easy life. The big sedan has style in spades, with a formal profile and sleek lines that definitely announce that this big Benz takes no prisoners. In typical German fashion, the design is restrained and the clean lines minimize the car's size, but there's no denying that this is a lot of sheetmetal hammering down the road. A few bits of chrome, like the surround for the window opening emphasizes the car's best attributes, and there's just no mistaking the big 3-pointed star up front that moves lesser traffic out of the way like a snow plow. Yes, it's 26 years old and there are a few wrinkles here and there, but even a middle-aged Muhammad Ali was still formidable. Inside, the S-class got every luxury and convenience item Mercedes engineers could imagine in 1989. Power tan leather buckets are firm and supportive and in shockingly good condition considering the age and mileage on this heavy cruiser. Gorgeous door panels feature different materials and shapes that helped Mercedes break out of its cold, impersonal interior look, and the burled walnut on the center console warms it up inside nicely. Big, clear instruments are similar to those Mercedes always offered, and there's a massive stereo system featuring a JVC AM/FM/CD head unit and speakers fitted throughout the interior. That console-mounted cell phone is a nod to the era in which this car ruled, making for a kind of kitschy conversation piece today. Heated seats, automatic climate control, power windows, and a giant trunk are all included, making this a first-class luxury liner. The 5.6 liter V8 under the hood is one of Mercedes' most reliable units, capable of running for hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than basic maintenance. Torquey and smooth, it moves the big sedan with the effortless ease of an electric motor, and the relentless push of torque makes it feel like it could accelerate forever. Beautifully maintained, the engine bay is spotless, from the big aluminum air cleaner lid to all the hoses and wires that comprise what was, at the time, the world's most technically advanced automobile. Obviously, someone loved this one and the maintenance means that it's still bulletproof reliable today. It's the same deal underneath, where there's a 4-speed automatic with syrupy smooth shifts and a fully independent suspension that soaks up bumps like a hovercraft. Classic Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels look right and wear right-sized Cooper performance radials. First-class accommodations and a ton of luxury for the price of a 4-year-old Hyundai. And this one is loaded with maintenance records tracking a long life of well-maintained, low-ownership. For that kind of cash the only thing you'll get at a new car dealership is laughed at. No, you're going to need to go used, and it'll have to be a classic. Convertible? Absolutely. Timeless lines? Certainly. An amazing on-the-road presence and V8 power? It's obvious you need a Mercedes-Benz 560SL like this gorgeous maroon 1988 roadster. Anything longer than a quick glance will show that this car was well cared for all of its life. The original Cabernet Red paint shines beautifully, and the body is very straight. These roadsters always looked the best in subdued colors, and this car's no exception. Both the folding soft top and hard top are included, which is great for resale time. These cars were legendary for their clean lines and restrained trim, and the brightwork is very nice from three pointed star to tail. Those quad headlamps looked downright anachronistic when the next SL came out, but history is definitely kinder to this generation and they're starting to gather a real enthusiast following. This was the car to have for doctors, movie stars and those who wanted to be seen, and they still draw longing glances today, mostly because nobody knows how affordable they really are. Inside, proper care is evident as well. The seats are beautiful thanks to indoor storage and Mercedes' MB-Tex material that wears like iron. The carpets are nice and the dash isn't baked by the sun. A large, thin-rimmed steering wheel (complete with an air bag, a rarity in 1988) has signaled a relaxed and refined driving experience from the golden age of motoring through the current Rolls-Royce Phantom. The original AM/FM/cassette radio is in the dash rather than a later aftermarket unit which would spoil the interior's aesthetics. Some SLs came with vestigial rear seats while this car comes with an infinitely more practical storage area that's perfect for a weekend getaway. The doors close with a reassuring clunk and the driving position is great for both running errands and long road trips. The folding top is in great shape and is obviously newer since the rear windows are so clear. Under the hood is the larger 5.6 liter V8, putting out 227 horsepower and 287 pounds of torque. That's not a gargantuan amount by today's standards, but Mercedes was far more concerned with refinement and ease of use than maximum power. These engines work almost silently, propelling you forward like an electric motor. Presentation here is excellent with all original components and plenty of evidence of correct maintenance over the years. A new radiator is up front and newer tune up parts are in their places. With a completely stock car you're more concerned with not finding parts to talk about, and with this one, even the original exhaust is in place while the fuel filter and fuel pump are newer replacements. Everything in the chassis was as overbuilt as the rest of the car, and the ride is superb. 15-inch alloys are at all four corners, surrounded by 205/65/15 Michelin radials. This generation of SL still is Mercedes-Benz' longest running, and with good reason. Solid engineering, a great-looking body, a nicely functional and upscale interior, smooth power and great looks are always a winning combination. Today they remain fantastic cruisers with great performance and an iron-clad reputation for quality and durability. This beautifully maintained 1987 560SL is the one to own, with the biggest engine fitted to an R107, an upgraded interior, and the longest list of standard features. Of course, this SL still carries the instantly-recognizable bodywork that defined almost two decades' worth of SLs, with the only noteworthy change being a tacked-on third brake light mandated by the Feds in 1986. Wearing 100% of its original sheetmetal and bright white paint, this astoundingly clean SL is exactly the kind of no-stories car you want to own. There's still a great shine to the bodywork, because you truly did get something exceptional for your money back in 1987, and there's no denying that Mercedes-Benz did put these together with extreme care; just look at the way the panels fit. And until you've slammed the door on one of these over-built tanks, you don't know how solid a topless car can be. Sure, there are a few signs of use, but like most SLs, this one has led an exceptionally easy life as someone's fair-weather cruiser and it shows. The beautiful contrasting tan interior is also mostly original, including the seat covers in original MB-Tex, carpets, and the real wood inserts on the dash itself. As a car that has spent most of its life with the top down, it's surprising that the sun hasn't really taken a toll, but the seats are supple, the carpets are not faded (mostly thanks to carpeted floor mats), and the steering wheel feels substantial in your hands. The seats have that firm feeling that only Mercedes seats seem to deliver, and all the gauges are fully functional. In fact, everything works, rare on other machines this sophisticated but common on well-maintained R107s. By '87, just about everything was standard on the SL, including automatic climate control, a power passenger side mirror, power windows, cruise control, and additions like airbags and ABS brakes. More recently it has received an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo that's a big upgrade over the original Becker or Blaupunkt head unit, but otherwise it's quite stock. The fully lined trunk is fitted with plush tan carpets, and this car includes both a brand new black canvas soft top and removable hard top. Recently serviced, this car is a heck of a runner. The 5.6-liter V8 engine under the hood was a big upgrade in the power department and lights off with a rumbling V8 idle and pulls hard thanks to 227 horsepower and a quick-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay is a bit grungy, but there's no denying that these cars have earned their legendary reliability status the old fashioned way: by being supremely reliable. SLs routinely run hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance, and thanks to the recent service that includes new brakes, a major transmission service, and a rebuilt steering box, it runs and drives superbly. Even the tires are relatively recent 205/65/15 Uniroyals on bright chrome M-B alloy wheels. Even though it's more than 25 years old, this SL commands respect on the road with great performance and sumptuous comfort. Showing up in this car still means you've truly arrived; only you will know how affordable it really is. Yes, that's correct, it's a Euro-spec SL, complete with the slender non-federalized bumpers, handsome Euro headlights, and a quick-revving 3.5 liter V8 engine. It's badged a 350SL, and for people who know the difference, this is a pretty neat little car at a great price. Like all R107 SLs, this one is built like the proverbial bank vault. The light blue paint is perfect for the sporting 2-seater and in typical Mercedes-Benz fashion, it's beautifully built. Imported from Germany, it retains all the features that the designers intended but our government wouldn't let us have, so it appears lighter, sleeker, and sportier than the usual SLs of this period. Finish quality on the paint is pretty nice, as it was refinished in its original color in 2004 and treated as a collector's item ever since. That means no foul weather drives, no daily slog through traffic, just fair weather and easy cruising. It's remarkable what a difference those slender bumpers make, but the rest of the car is instantly identifiable, from the big three-pointed star up front to the ridged taillights that were a staple of Mercedes-Benz automobiles for more than a decade. As you'd expect, the doors fit beautifully, the hood closes with a gentle push, and the big hood doesn't move around when you're driving with verve. The tan leather interior was refinished in 2005, likely because the paint looked so good tha the interior was no longer up to par. Regardless, it's now beautifully trimmed with fresh seat covers, carpets, and door panels, all of which match the original specs. The seats are piped in dark brown which adds some contrast and detail, while the wood on the center console is real wood, not a decal, giving the car an appropriate upscale look. The dash pad is perhaps the only place this car really shows its age, since it is original and starting to crack, but the rest remains in first-class shape. Of note, this car does have an accessory fold-down rear seat, which is really reserved for small children or people you hate, but it may add some practicality to the 2-seat SL. There's also a dark blue canvas convertible top, which is the one you'll use most often, along with a color-matched hardtop that was standard equipment on the SL. The trunk is beautifully finished with tan carpets that appear to be factory-issue. Americans never received the 3.5 liter V8 engine, and it offers a decidedly different feel than the bigger 4.5. Quick to rev, it's a little soft on the bottom end, but it more than makes up for it with its joyful roar towards the upper ends of the tachometer and it makes a fantastic tenor V8 bellow at full tilt. It has been properly maintained throughout its life and rebuilt in 2008, so it's a superb runner with no notable issues today. It starts quickly and idles smoothly and with a quick-shifting automatic transmission, it feels much more sporting than the American-market 450s. This is how these cars were supposed to feel! The suspension remains supple, the brakes are typically powerful, and it doesn't mind going with you whatever you're doing, from chasing groceries to carving up your favorite back country road. Traditional "pie crust" alloys are always the right look and carry recent Toyo radials. There's no denying the appeal of a car that looks like this, and you shouldn't be afraid of the 3.5 liter engine. The last owner had it for more than 25 years, so obviously there's a lot here to love. From the spectacular 300SL roadsters of the mid-1950s to this 1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL, these wonderful 2-seaters are the perfect blend of luxury, style, and performance, and most are quite affordable as this one aptly demonstrates. Handsome, reliable, comfortable, with more than adequate performance from the healthy 3.8 liter V8 under the hood, the R107 SLs remain popular today for all the right reasons. This handsome silver 380SL is a very affordable luxury/performance car that represents a huge bang for the buck. That's original paint and bodywork, which is admittedly showing a few signs of age, but it's also obvious that it's always been treated well. Silver is a great color for the conservative Mercedes-Benz, and on this little roadster, it's the perfect choice and compliments the car's spirited performance. The paint is entirely original and its current condition proves that your top-of-the-line car got top-of-the-line paint for its top-of-the-line price. Its styling has a timelessness to it that belies the fact that the car was designed in the 70s, and it has the Euro-spec headlights give it a sleeker look than the ordinary US-spec sealed beams. Today, they are still considered prestigious cars and showing up in this one will likely win you front-row parking from the valet. The standard interior material in the mid-80s SLs was MB-Tex, and it's as durable as it is attractive. As a well-maintained car, the interior remains in excellent condition with little wear and almost no damage to the seats. The carpets look appropriate for the time and mileage, while the door panels are in decent shape with only a little bit of stretching. And yes, that's real wood on the dash and console, as well as the custom 3-spoke steering wheel, none of it showing signs of cracking or fading, despite the many hours it must have spent in the sun. An AM/FM/cassette stereo system is period-appropriate and still sounds decent. Overhead, the folding canvas top is in good shape, and this car also includes a matching silver hardtop, which seals the car up as tightly as an equivalent sedan. And no other automaker this side of Rolls-Royce upholsters a trunk better than Mercedes-Benz. The all-aluminum 3.8 liter SOHC V8 under the hood has a bubbly, energetic idle, and pulls the roadster around with aplomb. It won't bounce your skull off the headrest, but it's equally happy dodging through town or hammering down the Autobahn at triple-digit speeds. These cars were also grossly over-engineered and even the engineers at Mercedes referred to them as "der Panzerwagens," and you know the Germans know a thing or two about building tanks. The highly original engine bay shows signs of regular maintenance, and that's about all these cars need to be reliable for many thousands of miles. Recent work includes a new fuel pump and a freshly cleaned fuel system. The 3-speed automatic clicks through the gears in a businesslike fashion, while the all-independent suspension soaks up bumps with a well-damped thump while still remaining sporting enough to be entertaining on a twisty country road. The original 15-inch wheels were chromed and it's probably in need of freshening, but the blackwall radials still have a lot of life left in them. So here is that most rare of beasts: an affordable, reliable vintage car that provides enjoyable top-down motoring while being relatively inexpensive to own and maintain. Offering timeless styling, first-class comfort, and bulletproof reliability, this Mercedes has a lot going for it! 1973 was the final year of the desirable small bumper SL. One year later the government would step in and insist on the large, clumsy bumpers. The R107 SL's shape should be quite familiar by now, but for folks outside the hobby, they still represent luxury and plenty of class. This SL lives up to the hype, there are a few signs of age, but at this price, they're easy to overlook. Overall though, the burgundy paint is in nice shape and even features a new cloth top. Equipped with just a tasteful few splashes of chrome, the grille, lenses, and polished trim all look great against the burgundy paint, giving it a very upscale look that never gets old. Inside the luxurious interior has been meticulously cared for. The textured seating surfaces have been recovered and look right at home in the top-of-the-line SL. Inside the dash you'll find No-nonsense gauges that are big, clear, and easy to read at a glance. The center console houses the rest of the controls including the power windows and the traditional gaited shifter. On the floor, the new carpet looks incredible. Overall, the interior is in great condition and with a trunk that is well shaped and deep enough for your overnight bags, you will be ready to pack up and hit the road! Pop open the hood and you'll reveal a correct Bosch fuel injected 4.5 liter V8. Based on the overall look of the engine bay, it very well could be the original factory drivetrain. Equipped with power steering, fuel injection and 4-wheel disc brakes, this Mercedes is a dream to drive regularly, and for extended distances. Bolted to the V8 is a 3-speed automatic transmission that is ready for life on the highway. At the corners, 14" Mercedes wheels bring together the traditional look, and are wrapped in 205/70R14 Michelin rubber. This gorgeous 450SL is ready to be enjoyed. And with a price like this, it won't last long under our showroom lights! Vehicle Information VIN: WDBBA45C8FA029375 Stock: 1851-ATL Mileage: 100,143 Color: Gray Trans: Automatic Engine: 3.8L V8 16V MPG: Drivetrain: RWD Description For those of you just joining the old car hobby, you can scarcely do better than an R107 Mercedes-Benz SL of any kind. Handsome, durable, fun to drive, and with great parts availability, they are easy cars to own. Even better, most folks still think they cost a fortune, so showing up in one of these makes you look like an A-lister. Dont worry, we wont tell anyone how little this 1985 380SL really costs. Almost everyone in the world can draw one of these from memory, and throughout the 80s, you couldnt go out in the sun without seeing one. Today, however, finding a good one isnt so easy, because they, like most cars of the period, were susceptible to the dreaded tin worm just like everything else. Fortunately, this one is a California car and it comes with all the goodness youd expect with a pedigree like that. The paint is mostly original with a few touch-ups to keep it in fine order and the sheetmetal underneath is quite straight. Fantastic build quality is a big part of these cars appeal and a key to their longevity, and you can feel it just by closing one of the doors. Silver paint gives it a sleek, subtle look that ideally suits the 2-seater, a grown-up look that doesnt need to resort to flash to make a statement. Youll also note that the rubber bumpers are in excellent shape and not cooked by the sun and the chrome remains shiny. The gray leather seats are rather rare, as most SLs carried MB-Tex vinyl. The natural materials add a luxurious warmth to the interior and remain in fantastic condition with minimal wear and none of the expected signs of age. The seats are firm and comfortable for all-day cruising, and supportive enough for the spirited driving for which this car is intended. Theres also natural wood on the center console and big, no-nonsense instruments behind a massive steering wheel. By 1985, most of these came loaded with every available convenience feature, including automatic climate control, power windows and locks, and a tilt steering column. The top of the dash is perhaps the only demerit, where there are a few cracks that are inevitable in a California car mar an otherwise impressive interior, right down to the plush carpets that show minimal wear. Its worth noting that the hardtop has never been off the car(!) and the trunk is extremely well-preserved with more plush carpet. The 3.8 liter V8 was downsized from the earlier 4.5 liter unit, but gives up only 7 horsepower (215 vs. 222). As a result, the 380 feels more agile thanks to a lighter front end, yet still zips around town with ease and hammers down the interstate at supra-legal speeds. We have receipts for the maintenance over the years, which is critical because a well-maintained SL will last practically forever. The 3-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago it has that same firm but supple feel in the suspension that makes it feel confident under almost any conditions. Shiny chrome alloys are a nice upgrade and carry 205/70/14 BFGoodrich blackwall radials that still have a lot of life left in them. Although it could use a little TLC here and there make no mistake this car is still an amazing piece of machinery ready for another few decades worth of fun. With lots of factory documentation and receipts from single-family ownership, this is the SL that you can buy without worries. Enjoy one of the smartest buys in the hobby today and call now! Vehicle Information VIN: WDBBA48D8JA075382 Stock: 2195-ATL Mileage: 103,818 Color: Red Trans: Automatic Engine: 5.6L V8 16V MPG: Drivetrain: RWD Description With its origins dating back to 1972 and the 350SL, this superbly preserved 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL is the final evolution of the R107 chassis, and is unquestionably the best of the breed. Replacing the somewhat underpowered 3.8 liter V8 in the 380SL, the 560SL got a muscular 5.6 liter V8, a 4-speed automatic transmission, and a host of chassis and styling upgrades that make it the one to own if youre a collector or just someone who appreciates precision machinery. There truly was a difference between a mass-produced low-priced car and this top-of-the-line cruiser, and it is immediately apparent when you look down the flanks of this SL. There are no ripples, no sags, no orange peel, just a vivid, deep red finish that clearly says this car is worth every penny of its whopping $62,430 original sticker price. The doors fit the way you would expect from a Mercedes, and the big hood opens and closes with just your fingertips. The 560 received a modest chin spoiler, and on this car it is free of driveway scuffs and road rash, while out back, a subtle federally mandated third brake light perches at the edge of the trunk lid. Things like the rubber bumper guards, rub strips, and chrome-ringed grille are all in excellent condition, suggesting that this SL, like most, has lived a very easy life. Inside, the seats wear supple genuine leather in the 560, and the lovely tan hides contrast smartly with the bright red exterior. The seats are in decent condition with only modest signs of wear and minor cracking (it is a convertible after all), and theyre extremely comfortable, making this the ideal car for long highway drives. The fat steering wheel is nicely weighted, and an airbag was standard equipment in 1988. The gauge layout is straightforward and elegantly simple in traditional Mercedes-Benz fashion, and the controls for things like the climate control and radio fall easily to hand. The SL is a real two-seater, with a small package shelf behind the seats, and a fully finished trunk provides reasonable accommodations for two peoples luggage. This car is equipped with two tops, a black canvas convertible top and a matching red hardtop, both of which are in great shape. The 5.6 liter V8 is the most potent engine ever offered in US-bound R107 SLs, making a fairly robust 227 horsepower and 287 pounds of torque. With a rumbling, powerful idle, this muscular powerplant moves the roadster smartly, and despite being a luxury car first and a sports car second, it is remarkably potent on the road. This engines real strength lies in its almost boundless reserves of torque, making it feel like this car as at the end of a giant recoiling rubber band that can accelerate the car forever. Unobtrusive when you want it quiet, and ready to play whenever the roads turn twisty, the mechanicals in this SL make it the ideal dance partner. Underneath, everything is factory-spec, right down to the exhaust system, and its in great condition thanks to a life down south where it stays warm year-round. Traditional Mercedes-Benz alloys were freshened for the 560, and carry 205/65/15 Michelin radials. The 560SL combined all that Mercedes learned about the V8 R107 chassis cars into a cultural icon that quietly and confidently told the world its occupants had arrived, and even today you look like a movie star behind the wheel. As a result, it's a wonderful way to get into the hobby with a car that needs no excuses and can travel cross-country on tour without issues. And there's still nothing like that three-pointed star to let everyone know you've arrived and don't worry, we won't tell them how affordable it really is! The R107 roadsters are some of the most durable, robust, and flat-out fun-to-drive of all late-model Mercedes-Benz products. Oh, don't worry, there's plenty of luxury car DNA there, but it's also descended from the legendary 300SLs of the '50s, which means that performance and reliability are built in. From the solid thunk of the doors closing to the precise way the hood latch release pokes out from between the spokes of the grille-mounted star, the car is beautifully engineered and built. The dark blue paint was redone about three years ago at a Mercedes dealership, so it's quite nice and easily measures up to the standards you'd expect. The trim proportions give it a sporty feeling and there's simply nowhere you can go where this white roadster will look out of place. Of course there's no rust or rot, and the car has been in a sunny climate all its life. Additions include Euro-spec headlights that give the SL a markedly different look and a deck lid mounted stop lamp from a later 560SL model, which is a good safety feature. Accommodations are first class all the way in the tan interior, which is an upscale and elegant combination. The MB-Tex upholstery remains in outstanding condition, particularly for a convertible, with only light wear visible in the usual spots on the driver's seat bolsters. Carpets are quite nice, although there's some discoloration in the rear parcel shelf area, which is to be expected, and the door panels are equally well preserved. Everything Mercedes-Benz could throw at a car in 1983 was standard on the SL, including A/C (blows cold with R134a refrigerant), power windows and locks, and cruise control, all of which are still fully functional (would you expect anything less from a Mercedes?). This car also features a handsome medium blue folding top and a matching dark blue hardtop, as well as a fully finished trunk that's better upholstered than the interiors of lesser cars of the period. Eager to run, the 3.8-liter V8 is the epitome of Mercedes-Benz engineering. Reliable, smooth, and with power delivery akin to an electric motor, it's capable of flinging the SL around like a sports car, cruising at triple-digit speeds for hours on end, and will likely do so forever with just routine maintenance. It has been recently serviced, including the all-important timing chain upgrade, a new center bearing on the driveshaft, and new tie rods on the steering. With a bouncy V8 idle and a wonderful muted exhaust note, the SL is always ready and never puts a tire astray with a competent 4-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes all around. The underside is so clean there's just no doubt that this car has spent its life in a warm climate, so no worries about tin worm. Handsome MB alloys wear recent 205/70/14 blackwall radials that ride and handle beautifully. Top-end luxury doesn't have to cost a fortune, and this SL is ready to enjoy. After that, the cars were more mainstream, and the engineers were joined by the marketing department, and the slogan "Engineered like no other car" fell by the wayside. This gorgeous black 1988 560SL represents the last of the best, a low-mileage survivor that proves why these cars are still wonderful machines that truly deserve their honored reputations. If you could afford one of these, it meant you had well and truly arrived, and that you cared about smart investing as much as making a good first impression Of course, nobody will ever argue with black, as it looks fantastic no matter what kind of car it's attached to. On a grand tourer such as this, it almost looks sinister and certainly gives the 2-seat SL an air of importance. It has led an easy life in a warm climate, and with just 43,302 miles on the clock, it is just getting broken-in. Panel gaps are exemplary and the trim fits with a precision that was typical of Mercedes-Benz quality of the era. The heavy chrome and rubber bumpers were an unfortunate by-product of federal regulations, but they, too, add to the car's appeal with their purposeful look, as if Mercedes didn't care about appearance as much as function, which was 100% true. 1988 was near the end of R107 production, and it received a slender third brake light at the trailing edge of the deck lid, a big improvement over the clunky CHMSL on earlier models, and this car also received chrome fender lip moldings, a popular accessory that really dresses up the all-black roadster. The luscious gray interior is incredibly inviting and looks upscale even in today's world, and it's a very rare option. The leather used in these cars is not only lovely to look at, but wears like iron, and the bucket seats have a comfortable look while still being supportive and firm. Matching light gray carpets look unaffected by the sun's rays or dirty shoes, protected as they are by a set of monogrammed Mercedes-Benz floor mats that seem to have taken a majority of the abuse. Burled walnut on the console and dash warms up the interior without detracting from the all-business controls and the layout should be familiar to anyone who has driven a R107. The bold gauges are visible through the massive steering wheel that makes you feel like you're at the helm of something substantial, and in true Mercedes fashion, everything works as it should. This car also offers two tops, a canvas folding roof and a color-matched hardtop. The final evolution of the 5.6 liter SOHC V8 was designed to run for hundreds of thousands of miles with only routine maintenance, and with only 43,302 original miles, this one is still fresh. With a bubbly, bouncy idle and seemingly limitless reserves of torque, it moves the two-seat roadster effortlessly without the high-strung theatrics of lesser machines. Maintenance is critical to these cars' health, and as a one-owner car, the care it has received is obvious; just have a look under the hood and you'll see that it's almost new. A 4-speed automatic transmission swaps gears unobtrusively, and the supple, all-independent suspension is willing to dance, but is equally comfortable on long stretches of highway. Traditional MB alloy wheels wearing 215/60/15 Bridgestone radials adroitly straddle the ride/performance equation. Renowned for their engineering, cars like this SL are a reminder of when the gap between the ordinary and the extraordinary was wide indeed. However, today is a different story and these cars are red hot, following in the footsteps of their 300SL siblings, which have rocketed to the very top of high-end collectors' must-have lists. Is this car a bargain today? Absolutely. No, this isn't a concours specimen, but you already knew that just by the price. Perfect cars are trading hands for close to twice this figure, so you've got some room to work here and still come out ahead; and that's providing that prices stand still, which is quite unlikely according to the current market trend. So you have to look at this light blue roadster as a rare opportunity to get a fun car that will potentially earn its keep in the coming years. In the meantime, however, you get a handsome 2-seater that has all the styling cues of its million-dollar siblings in a much more user-friendly package. Thanks to legendary Mercedes-Benz quality, even the affordable 190 was ridiculously over-built (especially for 1959) and today feels substantial, not fragile. Sheetmetal is in good order and with either top on or off, the doors close firmly without excessive effort. It buffs up nicely and has a period-correct shine and the light blue color is highlighted by nice chrome and stainless trim that offers impeccable good taste without excess. The handsome gray interior was replaced about ten years ago and shows some signs of use, but that's to be expected in a car that's been shown off around town. At the time it was done, these were not investment-grade cars, so it's not quite factory-exact, but it looks right for the period and the basics are quite good. The gray and blue combination is rather attractive and the big white steering wheel is a Mercedes-Benz trademark of the period. There are also big, easy-to-read VDO gauges (even the wind-up clock works!) and the 4-speed manual transmission makes for a rather sporting driving experience. Darker gray carpets are an elegant touch and it has recently been treated to a modern AM/FM/iPod stereo system, making it a fantastic fair-weather cruiser. The blue canvas convertible top folds easily and seals up better than many roadsters of the period (again, thanks to Mercedes-Benz engineering), and the car looks great top up or top down, and the car includes a removable hardtop as well. The trunk isn't huge, but it's well-shaped and offers plenty of room for two people's luggage on a road trip. The 1.9 liter inline-four engine isn't a match for the mighty 300SL, but it's reasonably lively and eager to run. With twin side-draft Mikuni carburetors, it feels gutsy around town and as the intervening years have proven, it is as reliable as the sunrise. The engine bay shows signs of regular and conscientious maintenance, which is especially critical on these cars, and it does run rather well today thanks to a recent tune-up. The undercarriage is original and a bit crusty, with an older single exhaust system that offers a reasonably sporting soundtrack and an all-independent suspension tuned for comfort but still willing to hustle on your favorite country road. Steel wheels with color-matched hubcaps are a favorite look and they carry recent 185/70/13 whitewall radials. With just two owners from new, this is a great-running and very presentable 190SL that can be enjoyed as-is or used as a basis for a top-flight restoration that could top the skyrocketing market. Hard choice, isn't it? Let your neighbors think you hit it big with this A-list celebrity that still drives like the ultimate piece of German engineering. Clearly built to last, the R107 SLs were called "der Panzerwagon" by their creators, and now, more than three decades later, it's easy to see why. With all its original bodywork and paint, this 30-year-old 380SL looks pretty darned good, like catching a glimpse of the still-lovely Raquel Welch and realizing that she hasn't lost a step. The well-proportioned body still looks like a million bucks and the three-pointed star on the nose commands respect from virtually everyone on the road. As I said, there's no major rust or rot thanks to a lifetime in the warm south, and someone obviously loved this car, because the paint has a soft luster that only comes from frequent baths and regular applications of wax. It also helps to start with high-quality paint, and there's no question that Mercedes-Benz quality during this era was second to none. Even the brightwork on the bumpers and around the windows of the hardtop remains bright and shiny. If you need any additional proof that the famous MB-Tex vinyl upholstery in these cars is virtually indestructible, look no further than the tan buckets in this roadster. Yes, they're original, and there's not a split seam or a worn corner anywhere to be found. Equally nice door panels show no evidence of even a driver's elbow leaning on the armrest and the carpets show only mild wear that's quite in line with the car's age and mileage. As a convertible, a little discoloration from the sun isn't unexpected, but everything has an all-of-a-piece look that suggests a well-maintained original rather than a piecemeal restoration. Woodgrain appliques on the center stack and console warm it up a bit and are showing their age, but they're some of the only indicators that this car is now 30 years old. A newer AM/FM/CD stereo with large speakers in the package shelf is the lone upgrade inside, because everything else was standard equipment. All SLs included two tops, and the black vinyl folding top was replaced in February 2013 with the hardtop in the same condition as the rest of the bodywork. The 3.8 liter V8 was designed to help improve fuel economy but still delivers the kind of effortless performance that made these cars famous as high-speed cruisers. The bubbly SOHC V8 makes a wonderful sound, and is remarkably flexible, equally content to burble through traffic or hammer down the autobahn at triple-digit speeds. The clean engine bay has been properly maintained from new, including a new A/C compressor installed in September 2014, so the system is working properly. It starts easily and drives smoothly, with the 3-speed automatic transmission a willing partner. The all-independent suspension soaks up bumps but doesn't give up much in terms of handling, and 4-wheel discs were standard so you never feel like you're in over your head. Ever-gorgeous Mercedes alloys wear new 215/70/14 Michelin radials. Join the A-list and enjoy the performance and luxury of this lovely open roadster. This handsome SL is just begging for a run on the next warm, sunny day.
