Luxury machines like this very attractive bronze 1989 example could hammer the Autobahn all day at triple-digit speeds, coddling their occupants like no other car in the world. For a car that cost the equivalent of more than $100,000 when it was new, this is a great way to get incredible luxury at an incredible discount. Few cars have a more commanding road presence than an S-class Mercedes, and you'll have no trouble cruising through traffic with this handsome sedan. It's probably wearing its original paint, and it goes to show you what the best paint in the world can deliver, because it still looks great. Of course, some of that is probably thanks to an enthusiastic owner, but there's no denying that this car has led an easy life. The big sedan has style in spades, with a formal profile and sleek lines that definitely announce that this big Benz takes no prisoners. In typical German fashion, the design is restrained and the clean lines minimize the car's size, but there's no denying that this is a lot of sheetmetal hammering down the road. A few bits of chrome, like the surround for the window opening emphasizes the car's best attributes, and there's just no mistaking the big 3-pointed star up front that moves lesser traffic out of the way like a snow plow. Yes, it's 26 years old and there are a few wrinkles here and there, but even a middle-aged Muhammad Ali was still formidable. Inside, the S-class got every luxury and convenience item Mercedes engineers could imagine in 1989. Power tan leather buckets are firm and supportive and in shockingly good condition considering the age and mileage on this heavy cruiser. Gorgeous door panels feature different materials and shapes that helped Mercedes break out of its cold, impersonal interior look, and the burled walnut on the center console warms it up inside nicely. Big, clear instruments are similar to those Mercedes always offered, and there's a massive stereo system featuring a JVC AM/FM/CD head unit and speakers fitted throughout the interior. That console-mounted cell phone is a nod to the era in which this car ruled, making for a kind of kitschy conversation piece today. Heated seats, automatic climate control, power windows, and a giant trunk are all included, making this a first-class luxury liner. The 5.6 liter V8 under the hood is one of Mercedes' most reliable units, capable of running for hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than basic maintenance. Torquey and smooth, it moves the big sedan with the effortless ease of an electric motor, and the relentless push of torque makes it feel like it could accelerate forever. Beautifully maintained, the engine bay is spotless, from the big aluminum air cleaner lid to all the hoses and wires that comprise what was, at the time, the world's most technically advanced automobile. Obviously, someone loved this one and the maintenance means that it's still bulletproof reliable today. It's the same deal underneath, where there's a 4-speed automatic with syrupy smooth shifts and a fully independent suspension that soaks up bumps like a hovercraft. Classic Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels look right and wear right-sized Cooper performance radials. First-class accommodations and a ton of luxury for the price of a 4-year-old Hyundai. And this one is loaded with maintenance records tracking a long life of well-maintained, low-ownership. For that kind of cash the only thing you'll get at a new car dealership is laughed at. No, you're going to need to go used, and it'll have to be a classic. Convertible? Absolutely. Timeless lines? Certainly. An amazing on-the-road presence and V8 power? It's obvious you need a Mercedes-Benz 560SL like this gorgeous maroon 1988 roadster. Anything longer than a quick glance will show that this car was well cared for all of its life. The original Cabernet Red paint shines beautifully, and the body is very straight. These roadsters always looked the best in subdued colors, and this car's no exception. Both the folding soft top and hard top are included, which is great for resale time. These cars were legendary for their clean lines and restrained trim, and the brightwork is very nice from three pointed star to tail. Those quad headlamps looked downright anachronistic when the next SL came out, but history is definitely kinder to this generation and they're starting to gather a real enthusiast following. This was the car to have for doctors, movie stars and those who wanted to be seen, and they still draw longing glances today, mostly because nobody knows how affordable they really are. Inside, proper care is evident as well. The seats are beautiful thanks to indoor storage and Mercedes' MB-Tex material that wears like iron. The carpets are nice and the dash isn't baked by the sun. A large, thin-rimmed steering wheel (complete with an air bag, a rarity in 1988) has signaled a relaxed and refined driving experience from the golden age of motoring through the current Rolls-Royce Phantom. The original AM/FM/cassette radio is in the dash rather than a later aftermarket unit which would spoil the interior's aesthetics. Some SLs came with vestigial rear seats while this car comes with an infinitely more practical storage area that's perfect for a weekend getaway. The doors close with a reassuring clunk and the driving position is great for both running errands and long road trips. The folding top is in great shape and is obviously newer since the rear windows are so clear. Under the hood is the larger 5.6 liter V8, putting out 227 horsepower and 287 pounds of torque. That's not a gargantuan amount by today's standards, but Mercedes was far more concerned with refinement and ease of use than maximum power. These engines work almost silently, propelling you forward like an electric motor. Presentation here is excellent with all original components and plenty of evidence of correct maintenance over the years. A new radiator is up front and newer tune up parts are in their places. With a completely stock car you're more concerned with not finding parts to talk about, and with this one, even the original exhaust is in place while the fuel filter and fuel pump are newer replacements. Everything in the chassis was as overbuilt as the rest of the car, and the ride is superb. 15-inch alloys are at all four corners, surrounded by 205/65/15 Michelin radials. This generation of SL still is Mercedes-Benz' longest running, and with good reason. Solid engineering, a great-looking body, a nicely functional and upscale interior, smooth power and great looks are always a winning combination. Today they remain fantastic cruisers with great performance and an iron-clad reputation for quality and durability. This beautifully maintained 1987 560SL is the one to own, with the biggest engine fitted to an R107, an upgraded interior, and the longest list of standard features. Of course, this SL still carries the instantly-recognizable bodywork that defined almost two decades' worth of SLs, with the only noteworthy change being a tacked-on third brake light mandated by the Feds in 1986. Wearing 100% of its original sheetmetal and bright white paint, this astoundingly clean SL is exactly the kind of no-stories car you want to own. There's still a great shine to the bodywork, because you truly did get something exceptional for your money back in 1987, and there's no denying that Mercedes-Benz did put these together with extreme care; just look at the way the panels fit. And until you've slammed the door on one of these over-built tanks, you don't know how solid a topless car can be. Sure, there are a few signs of use, but like most SLs, this one has led an exceptionally easy life as someone's fair-weather cruiser and it shows. The beautiful contrasting tan interior is also mostly original, including the seat covers in original MB-Tex, carpets, and the real wood inserts on the dash itself. As a car that has spent most of its life with the top down, it's surprising that the sun hasn't really taken a toll, but the seats are supple, the carpets are not faded (mostly thanks to carpeted floor mats), and the steering wheel feels substantial in your hands. The seats have that firm feeling that only Mercedes seats seem to deliver, and all the gauges are fully functional. In fact, everything works, rare on other machines this sophisticated but common on well-maintained R107s. By '87, just about everything was standard on the SL, including automatic climate control, a power passenger side mirror, power windows, cruise control, and additions like airbags and ABS brakes. More recently it has received an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo that's a big upgrade over the original Becker or Blaupunkt head unit, but otherwise it's quite stock. The fully lined trunk is fitted with plush tan carpets, and this car includes both a brand new black canvas soft top and removable hard top. Recently serviced, this car is a heck of a runner. The 5.6-liter V8 engine under the hood was a big upgrade in the power department and lights off with a rumbling V8 idle and pulls hard thanks to 227 horsepower and a quick-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay is a bit grungy, but there's no denying that these cars have earned their legendary reliability status the old fashioned way: by being supremely reliable. SLs routinely run hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance, and thanks to the recent service that includes new brakes, a major transmission service, and a rebuilt steering box, it runs and drives superbly. Even the tires are relatively recent 205/65/15 Uniroyals on bright chrome M-B alloy wheels. Even though it's more than 25 years old, this SL commands respect on the road with great performance and sumptuous comfort. Showing up in this car still means you've truly arrived; only you will know how affordable it really is. Vehicle Information VIN: WDBBA48D8JA075382 Stock: 2195-ATL Mileage: 103,818 Color: Red Trans: Automatic Engine: 5.6L V8 16V MPG: Drivetrain: RWD Description With its origins dating back to 1972 and the 350SL, this superbly preserved 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL is the final evolution of the R107 chassis, and is unquestionably the best of the breed. Replacing the somewhat underpowered 3.8 liter V8 in the 380SL, the 560SL got a muscular 5.6 liter V8, a 4-speed automatic transmission, and a host of chassis and styling upgrades that make it the one to own if youre a collector or just someone who appreciates precision machinery. There truly was a difference between a mass-produced low-priced car and this top-of-the-line cruiser, and it is immediately apparent when you look down the flanks of this SL. There are no ripples, no sags, no orange peel, just a vivid, deep red finish that clearly says this car is worth every penny of its whopping $62,430 original sticker price. The doors fit the way you would expect from a Mercedes, and the big hood opens and closes with just your fingertips. The 560 received a modest chin spoiler, and on this car it is free of driveway scuffs and road rash, while out back, a subtle federally mandated third brake light perches at the edge of the trunk lid. Things like the rubber bumper guards, rub strips, and chrome-ringed grille are all in excellent condition, suggesting that this SL, like most, has lived a very easy life. Inside, the seats wear supple genuine leather in the 560, and the lovely tan hides contrast smartly with the bright red exterior. The seats are in decent condition with only modest signs of wear and minor cracking (it is a convertible after all), and theyre extremely comfortable, making this the ideal car for long highway drives. The fat steering wheel is nicely weighted, and an airbag was standard equipment in 1988. The gauge layout is straightforward and elegantly simple in traditional Mercedes-Benz fashion, and the controls for things like the climate control and radio fall easily to hand. The SL is a real two-seater, with a small package shelf behind the seats, and a fully finished trunk provides reasonable accommodations for two peoples luggage. This car is equipped with two tops, a black canvas convertible top and a matching red hardtop, both of which are in great shape. The 5.6 liter V8 is the most potent engine ever offered in US-bound R107 SLs, making a fairly robust 227 horsepower and 287 pounds of torque. With a rumbling, powerful idle, this muscular powerplant moves the roadster smartly, and despite being a luxury car first and a sports car second, it is remarkably potent on the road. This engines real strength lies in its almost boundless reserves of torque, making it feel like this car as at the end of a giant recoiling rubber band that can accelerate the car forever. Unobtrusive when you want it quiet, and ready to play whenever the roads turn twisty, the mechanicals in this SL make it the ideal dance partner. Underneath, everything is factory-spec, right down to the exhaust system, and its in great condition thanks to a life down south where it stays warm year-round. Traditional Mercedes-Benz alloys were freshened for the 560, and carry 205/65/15 Michelin radials. The 560SL combined all that Mercedes learned about the V8 R107 chassis cars into a cultural icon that quietly and confidently told the world its occupants had arrived, and even today you look like a movie star behind the wheel. After that, the cars were more mainstream, and the engineers were joined by the marketing department, and the slogan "Engineered like no other car" fell by the wayside. This gorgeous black 1988 560SL represents the last of the best, a low-mileage survivor that proves why these cars are still wonderful machines that truly deserve their honored reputations. If you could afford one of these, it meant you had well and truly arrived, and that you cared about smart investing as much as making a good first impression Of course, nobody will ever argue with black, as it looks fantastic no matter what kind of car it's attached to. On a grand tourer such as this, it almost looks sinister and certainly gives the 2-seat SL an air of importance. It has led an easy life in a warm climate, and with just 43,302 miles on the clock, it is just getting broken-in. Panel gaps are exemplary and the trim fits with a precision that was typical of Mercedes-Benz quality of the era. The heavy chrome and rubber bumpers were an unfortunate by-product of federal regulations, but they, too, add to the car's appeal with their purposeful look, as if Mercedes didn't care about appearance as much as function, which was 100% true. 1988 was near the end of R107 production, and it received a slender third brake light at the trailing edge of the deck lid, a big improvement over the clunky CHMSL on earlier models, and this car also received chrome fender lip moldings, a popular accessory that really dresses up the all-black roadster. The luscious gray interior is incredibly inviting and looks upscale even in today's world, and it's a very rare option. The leather used in these cars is not only lovely to look at, but wears like iron, and the bucket seats have a comfortable look while still being supportive and firm. Matching light gray carpets look unaffected by the sun's rays or dirty shoes, protected as they are by a set of monogrammed Mercedes-Benz floor mats that seem to have taken a majority of the abuse. Burled walnut on the console and dash warms up the interior without detracting from the all-business controls and the layout should be familiar to anyone who has driven a R107. The bold gauges are visible through the massive steering wheel that makes you feel like you're at the helm of something substantial, and in true Mercedes fashion, everything works as it should. This car also offers two tops, a canvas folding roof and a color-matched hardtop. The final evolution of the 5.6 liter SOHC V8 was designed to run for hundreds of thousands of miles with only routine maintenance, and with only 43,302 original miles, this one is still fresh. With a bubbly, bouncy idle and seemingly limitless reserves of torque, it moves the two-seat roadster effortlessly without the high-strung theatrics of lesser machines. Maintenance is critical to these cars' health, and as a one-owner car, the care it has received is obvious; just have a look under the hood and you'll see that it's almost new. A 4-speed automatic transmission swaps gears unobtrusively, and the supple, all-independent suspension is willing to dance, but is equally comfortable on long stretches of highway. Traditional MB alloy wheels wearing 215/60/15 Bridgestone radials adroitly straddle the ride/performance equation. Renowned for their engineering, cars like this SL are a reminder of when the gap between the ordinary and the extraordinary was wide indeed.
