This 1955 190SL has metric gauges, KM speedometer, and was originally sold in Germany. The 190 SL's were not imported to the USA until the next year model year, 1956. I purchased the car in Switzerland, drove it in Europe for a while and then shipped it to San Pedro, Calif. in fall 1984. We drove the car for about eight years here, until we moved to the Caribbean. I had some parts rebuilt (Solex carbs, radiator), then went to other projects. I've decided continuing the restoration is more time commitment than I am willing to make. The car will want a FULL restoration: paint, interior & mechanical. The most important issue with these cars are the unibody panels - this car had a thick undercoating put on when new - so there is no rust or problem with the chassis. Most of these cars need whole panels cut out and replaced - this one will not need that. The car has never been restored, it has the original engine, drive train, leather interior, seats, canvas top, everything is there, including all the hard to find tools, jack, etc. The hard top was bought in the late 50's, according to the guy I bought it from - it has the wider window. Original owner had a repaint sometime in early 60's, from the anthricite grey to the sand color. Purchased parts include all rubber, a new rear left side bumper piece (some rust on original), ATE rebuild kit, brake rebuild kits, numerous parts directly from Mercedes Benz. I took out the original grey rubber floor mats, they will need replacing. Specific information: Body ID # typ 190 SL / 121042, Fahrgestell . NR 5501186, engine # Typ M121 B II - 129.91 55 01215, # stamped on frame 55-01186, wheels show 4/55 stamped on them, brake drums are finned aluminum. Kilometers showing on speedo is 38,976 - I believe it has turned over so it has 138,976 KM on it - that is about 83,385 original miles. The car was put in storage with 30 wt. oil poured in the four cylinders, and the engine has been turned over about once a year. It has been garaged, and covered. Registration is as "non operative". The photos show condition and originality of car. I am not into much phone conversation about it, other than to give directions here so you can see the car. If you're interested then come and look at it. John McAlpine 831-566-5668
