In the 1950s, Max Hoffman was a great influencer of auto imports in the US, under his guidance Mercedes-Benz designed the 190 SL to debut alongside the 300 SL Gullwing-Roadster model range, as a lighter and more affordable but equally exquisite option. Launched at the New York International Auto Show in 1954, the 190 SL was produced from 1955 through 1963 and, although not built as a race car, its Sport Leichtbau monocoque construction, aluminum hood and doors ensured speeds afforded the model some competition success and it fast became the sport favorite of the jet set due to its usability and fun factor. Finished on January 2nd, 1962, this 190 SL was one of the last 190 SL’s produced before production ended. It was delivered in its current color combination (confirmed by the Mercedes Benz data card) to a young woman as a birthday gift from her father. She kept the 190 for three years prior to selling to Mr. Ted Gowland, Jr. It remained in the Gowland family until 2012! In 2012 and in its most recent ownership, this 190 SL received a thorough restoration to as new condition throughout. This 190 SL has recently received a complete servicing due mainly to lack of use in its previous ownership/collection, it is thus ready for immediate use and enjoyment in its next ownership. I am a long time genuine enthusiast and have owned several of these cars trough the years including a perfect 50k mile car - to which this one is superior in many aspects. At 120k miles Complete cylinder head overhaul - valve guides/seals, cylinder hear resurfaced, timing chain/chain guides, new updated chain tensioner, head gasket set - all German factory MB parts. Between 120,400 to 122,200 miles - German and MB factory parts. Behr radiator/cap/graf metal impeller water pump, thermostat, coolant temperature switch, expansion tank, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, idle switch, oxygen sensor, throttle cable, drive shaft center support bearing, front flex disc, new derlin shifter bushings, fuel accumulator, fuel pump check valve, fuel filter, over voltage relay, engine and transmission mounts, parking brake shoes and cables, ignition switch and ignition lock housing, all vacuum hoses, gear oil, break fluid, tires, a/c compressor rebuilt, new dryer/receiver - recharged with R-12, under hood pad, lap timer gauge lcd rebuilt, brake pads, front rotors, stainless steel brake lines. Suspension completely overhauled - Meyle control arm kit that replaced all 8 of the rear suspension components including the control arms, ball joint assemblies, control arm struts, camber struts, thrust arms, and all hardware, new Mercedes lower control arms and bushings, front heavy duty strut mounts, torsion bar bushings, and front ball joints - bilstein sport shocks and h&r springs all around - self leveling suspension completely removed. European headlights, Evolution I 16x8 wheels - original 15x7 wheels included as well as a few spares - hand made stainless steel exhaust using all original flanges - properly done with a catalytic converter, one resonator and rear muffler - excellent progressive sound, much lighter that the factory system. All this work was done personally by a fellow enthusiast with a lot of love, care and attention to detail - which makes a huge difference. Has a few imperfections and patina from being 30 years old - none take away from the car - very small rust spot on the right rear quarter panel nothing else to speak of (southern car until I brought it to NY last year) - under carriage is excellent - no accidents - was always garaged and well looked after. Replace driver's side rear window regulator (does not work) A new regulator is included. Replace radio antenna. Replace ABS sensors front tires (ABS light is on). Service fuel distributor (Causes a difficult start and rough idle) Bosch fuel distributor service kit included. Air blower has a whirring noise for a few minutes and then goes away. (A replacement blower is included). On the cosmetics: The rubber around the mirrors and the door panels kind of shrunk over time from the heat (a common thing on this model). No other issues, if you want your mechanic to check it out feel free!
