This is a solid 1981 VW Rabbit Convertible auto trans with 78k original miles. It runs and drives well, but I have not driven it much this year. The top is in great shape. The interior is quite nice for the year as well, but could use a good cleaning. The exterior looks good, but it has had a paint job and some body work that wasn't the greatest in the past (like an Earl Scheib job). The lights, turn signals, radio, heater all work well. The tires are good but three of the four will lose air over time (several weeks). The car has been in storage over the winter but it will start and drive right now. The brake pedal seems low to me, but I'm no VW expert, the brakes work well when driving though. The following parts are new within this year:steering rackball jointsfront strutsstrut mountsfront engine mountvalve cover gasketspark plugsspark plug wiresdistributor cap & rotorfuel filterair filterhead lightstrunk lift strutbrake lines from master cylinder to the rearrear brake shoesrear brake wheel cylindersrear wheel bearings & racesbattery is new in the last three yearsThis is a nice little convertible toy to have fun with in the good weather. I do not think it has been driven much in the salt, the underneath is very solid.

Thanks for checking out my VW Rabbit Convertible. I have owned this for 20years intending to completely restore it at some point. It has been sitting in the garage for 15 years. Before that it was my daily driver. A ton of fun to drive. It's got the 14" alloy wheels from the original Rabbit GTI as well as the front spoiler from same. Top and headliner were replaced in 1999 about a year before it went in the garage. We did a cheap paint job just to make it look decent. Custom made wood dash was installed by me. Original engine and 5-speed trans. I also had a Techtonics downpipe and exhaust installed so it sounds good. Needs a battery. Haven't started it in about 5 years. Great for a restoration or first car, or whatever you want it for. I have the clear title in hand and ready to go. Vehicle is also for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the listing early. Best acceptable offer takes it, just need to close chapter. Buyer responsible for pickup. I am located in Bergen County NJ.

This 5-speed 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel C has approximately 165,000 miles. When initially purchased just under two years ago, the engine and transmission had just been rebuilt. Shortly thereafter, I had a bit of engine trouble. So, the newly-rebuilt engine was replaced with a 1985 1.6L 12mm VW Diesel engine with lower miles. Nevertheless, the new hoses, belts, and accessories were all stripped and used on the replacement engine. Since then, the car has only had a few hundred miles put on it.It has been parked in a garage for most of the past year and a half. When I was relying on the vehicle as a daily driver, over a period of a couple months, it was getting roughly 50mpg. There was a little play in the transmission when going into reverse, and from first to second.1st gear tends to stall but that might just be me. Starting in Second is easy. So, I purchased and put in a MissingLinkZ.com A1E Upgrade kit, which includes their basic metal rod end shift linkage, their billet-weight shift rod, their short throw arm, and their UHMW poly bushings. Now, it shifts incredibly smoothly. The A/C does blow cold as of now, though the fan will occasionally seize up. If I were to keep it and make it my DD again, I would probably replace the fan over the winter. The interior of the car is absolutely immaculate. It has one of the nicest interiors of a nearly 35-year-old car I've ever seen. The blue vinyl seats are all practically perfect, save for one small pin-point-sized hole on the back seat, which doesn't really show well in photographs. The roof liner is new, though there is a slight sag toward the back of the vehicle, which also doesn't photograph well. One of the previous owners installed some aftermarket speakers on the front driver and passenger doors. In an attempt to cover these, they used some blue carpeting. This does rub when using the handles to roll the windows up or down. The dash is also in relatively good condition. It has but two small cracks. The exterior of the car is in very nice condition, considering the vehicle's age. There are two buffer marks near the windshield, a chip to the primer near the rear hatch, and a missed patch of paint on the roof where the primer is showing. Other than that, the exterior looks incredible. The tires have roughly 90% of their life left in them. It appears the wheel bearings, struts, tie rods, and most of the other suspension components are new or quite recent. Additionally, much of the exhaust system is new. The door and window seals are new or in very good condition. In the end, this is a very nice example of a 33-year-old car. It is remarkably solid and in excellent shape, given its age. I would not hesitate to make this car my daily driver again, were it not for my current military obligations. It will outperform almost all hybrids currently on the market, for far less. Despite spending an extraordinary amount of time attempting to describe each and every flaw noted, this Rabbit is ready to go. It is sold as is, as shown, with no warranty expressed or implied. The buyer is responsible for any and all shipping costs. Can Arrange shipping for you just let me know. Thanks Have fun and Enjoy :)
