There have been 3 owners (one of which is myself). It has never been in an accident, I welcome a carfax check. While this car has been in my care, I have only put quality gasoline in it. This car has not given me any trouble and works perfectly, it can hold its own next to the newer GTI's. If you're looking for max output for min input, then this is your car. I can even give you the name of my mechanic, he works wonders and is cheaper than any I've been to. I've done my research, if you want a comparable car to this, you will pay $500 more for less features. Feel free to check out the other car websites. They're all 2-doors and base models. I purchased this car three years ago from a collector in Berkeley California. Story goes, he had bought it from another collector who had kept it in a garage with a load of other cars. Before that, the car belonged to a young man who inherited it from his aunt and drove it for a brief while. But the majority of the car's life was said to be spent with the aunt who owned it since new. The car is nowhere near a restored, showroom example, but when I found it, and still today, it is as unmolested and solid as I could have hoped to find. The car has exceptionally low miles. The original owner had said the odometer stopped working for a short period of time, but she had it repaired. In that time she claimed she put no more than 10k miles on it. Before purchasing it I took it to my mechanic and asked him if he thought the mileage the odometer read could be even close to true, and he said based on the overall wear to the parts, he suspected it was accurate. The interior and exterior are both in great condition. There is no damage to speak of on the body, just minor scuffs and scratches, and same could be said about the interior. A few small rips in the original interior that could be stitched or patched to keep it intact for years to come. There are a couple repairs to small parts and interior trim pieces that I had planned to get to, but haven't had the time and will probably hand those off to the next owner. For instance the door handles work, but are finicky and need replacement. I purchased replacement handles, but haven't yet installed them. Also, one of the rear bumper guards needs to be replaced. I have two of those for back-up, but haven't installed them. Most importantly the passenger seat belt needs to be fixed because it isn't locking in - a very minor repair to make. But these will be handed off to the next owner of this great car. Mechanically this car has been incredibly sound and reliable for me. I put about $2,000 into it when I got it. I told my mechanic to address whatever he thought it needed to survive a drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles and he did quite a bit of repairs and routine maintenance: belts, bearings, radiator, brakes, hoses, fuel pump, filters, etc... Then last year the same mechanic reported a leaky head gasket when I brought it into him, and he rebuilt the top end. So the engine is running like new. I should also mention people always comment on the sound of the original exhaust, which is trademark on these cars. All in all, with this car you are getting a very nice and increasingly rare example of an iconic GTI. Yes you will have to give little attention here and there to bring it back to its former glory, but nothing major or too time consuming. If I didn't need to invest in a family car I wouldn't be selling off such a beloved family member.
