Open to Offers.Very Good Condition - Books - Tools - Both Soft Top and Hard Top - Highly Desirable Color - California Car The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971, when the W 113 was replaced by its successor, the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350 SL. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed, which was ordered only 882 times and thus is a highly sought-after original option today. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the predominant choice. Of the 23,885 280 SLs produced, more than half were sold in the US. The main change was an upgrade to the 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 PS (130 kW; 170 hp) maximum power and 180 lb·ft (244 N·m) maximum torque, which finally gave the W 113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last.[9] The M130 marked the final evolution of Mercedes-Benz' venerable SOHC M180 inline-six, before it was superseded by the entirely new DOHC M110 inline-six introduced with R107 1974 European 280 SL models. For some time, it was also used in the W 109 300 S-Class, where it retired the expensive 3 liter M189 alloy inline-six. 1971 is the last year the 280 SL was manufactured, and highly desirable to many collectors. This is a highly restored 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL in excellent condition. The restoration list: Complete Paint Job: Arabian Grey Complete Interior: Brand new wood from Mercedes-Benz, not refinished Complete Engine & Transmission: Done in August 2011, only 1,177 miles driven since This immaculate 280SL was bought new in CA and has never left the state. It has a known ownership history from new (my grandmother had one similar and this car belonged to her best friend until it was sold/given to very close family friends from the same northern CA neighborhood). To my knowledge it has never left the state. From the family that received the car I purchased it and had a full restoration completed by Hot Rods and Hobbies in Long Beach where it was featured on their site.. All the colors and options are correct to the original build and the car has no rust and never has. The car has both roofs, drives exceptionally well and has had all mechanical work completed to as new condition. I have files going back to the late 80’s as well as a DVD of the restoration and a recent independent appraisal for insurance purposes given how quickly these cars are rising in value. Finished in Milan Brown Metallic with a Light Ivory top and furnished with an unblemished Cream interior this car is extremely rare and the last year of the w115 240D. Car has a tasteful era correct double cream hand painted pinstripe that beautifully compliments the interior and top. Engine and Transmission are in great shape. Engine runs strong and steady, no unusual sounds or knocks, only the iconic idling Mercedes diesel sound. Transmission shifts properly and fluently through ever gear with good timing. This car is equipped with a pull-start ignition, that functions just as it should, starting perfectly even on cold start, which is an indication of a strong engine. Engine Compartment is exceptionally clean and dry. This 240D drives and handles very well, no steering slack, and grips the road through every turn. The paint is in great condition. There is a deep luster and shine to every panel, no oxidation or fading. There are a few blemishes in the paint, but nothing truly noteworthy considering the age and condition of the car. The chrome and aluminum on this car is exquisite. There is no pitting, fading, oxidation, or scratches on any of the chrome. All of the aluminum metal trim along the window sills still has its original sheen, not faded or oxidized like a lot of classic Mercedes are prone to being. The bumpers and rubber seals are still jet black, with minimal cracks or fading. The boot of the car is very clean and has the original mat, and a fresh spare. Headlight casings are in phenomenal shape, no cracks, and still have a vibrant orange color that would be expected of a garage kept car. All optional power windows function perfectly. All the glass on the car is perfect, not a single chip or crack on any pane. Interior may be the best aspect of this car. Seats are like new, no tears or rips. Padding and springs is still very firm, so it does not feel as if you are falling into the seat. Headliner has good coloration and is taught. Speaker system is perfect, no static, distortion etc. A/C currently doesn't work, but blower and compressor do. I will ship the car anywhere in the US for free. Clean Autocheck, Clean Title.
