The Mustang may be retro inspired, but it remains one of the most widely recognized, respected, and desired nameplates in the automobile business. Today's Mustang still delivers the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been Mustang hallmarks for decades. The Mustang is available either as a coupe or convertible. Each is available with a 305-hp 3.7-liter V6 or a 420-hp 5.0-liter V8 engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard; a six-speed automatic is optional. A 302 Boss coupe with a 444-hp 5.0-liter V8 and six-speed manual transmission is also available. Standard safety features include electronic stability control, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, side-impact airbags and sequential LED sequential tail lamps. The Mustang can be equipped with alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated power leather seats, satellite radio, navigation system and more. The Mustang has been refreshed for 2013. Automatic HID headlights and a leather wrapped steering with audio controls are now standard on all Mustangs. The GT 5.0-liter now produces 420-hp (up from 412). Source: Model Reviews Introduction The 2013 Ford Mustang features a facelift and comes out bigger, bolder, cleaner. It's a change, not just a tweak. The 2013 Mustang resembles a Steve McQueen Bullitt Mustang, its mouth shaped more like '70 Mustang than a '65. The Mustang was redesigned for 2005 and got rave reviews for its looks, totally capturing the old Mustang but still looking contemporary. The styling tweaks since then have made it even better, and that holds true for the 2013 Mustang. A black eggcrate grille opens wide over the bumper, with a clean and full chin, fascia, and air intakes, and just a tidy flat-black horizontal spoiler at the lip. The triangular rear window masterfully evokes the roofline of original '65 Mustang, replacing its fake louvers with glass. We're less enthusiastic about the interior of the 2013 Mustang. Reviews all end up saying that the materials are okay considering the price of the car, remember it's only a Mustang, and we can't argue. The steering wheel lacks imagination, and that's disappointing. However the cloth seats are great; cloth can easily be a deal-breaker, and in the Mustang it's not. In fact, the cloth seats fit better than the leather, maybe because they grip better. The optional Recaro seats in either cloth or leather are excellent. There's good head and leg room up front, and visibility through the windshield is good, especially for a low-slung coupe. There's considerably more room and better visibility in the Mustang than in the Chevrolet Camaro. Naturally, the two-passenger rear seat is no place for adults. Rear-seat headroom is limited by the rake of the coupe roof, and leg room is minimal, even with the front seats moved forward. That comes with the territory of such a car and its shape and is a small price to be paid for such proportions. The retro instrument panel in the V6 and GT models clings too hard to the theme, we think. Having retro instrumentation on a car with modern performance like the Mustang is like having a telephone with a cord. The optional Shaker audio system is acoustically superb. Ford's SYNC system works well to choose music, but we had trouble operating it with voice commands. The Mustang convertible has a power fabric top and glass rear window. Trunk space in the convertible is reduced to 9.6 cubic feet, from 13.4 cubic feet in the coupe. The coupe has standard 50/50 fold-down rear seats that vastly expand the cargo space, by opening the trunk all the way to the front seatbacks. The V6 makes 305 horsepower, more than V8 muscle cars, and it does not sound like your father's V6. It's a fairly high-revving engine, reaching its horsepower peak at 6500 rpm and its torque peak at 4250 rpm, so it's good to play with. The manual transmission is the way to go if you like to play, because it's so good. And the manual comes with Hill Start Assist, so no worries about coasting backward when starting off on a steep hill. The automatic, meanwhile, does have a manual-shift feature it's awkward to use. The Mustang V6 is EPA-rated at 19/31 miles per gallon City/Highway. However, we didn't get anywhere near that, running it hard on twisty two-lanes. Mustang GT has a smooth, rumbling and growling 5.0-liter V8 engine. And with 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, it snaps your neck on the way to a quarter-mile time of about 13 seconds flat. That's quicker than the Chevrolet Camaro SS, even with its huge 6.2-liter engine and 426 horsepower. But the Mustang is 230 pounds lighter, and that makes a big difference in acceleration, also handling. The Boss 302 makes 444 horsepower with the same engine. But if you order the Track Package and Recaro Package on the GT, you can get most of the Boss for much less of the money. However the Boss has non-retro instrumentation, that's way cleaner. And it's a Boss 302. Brakes are good. Ford engineers have revised the braking system of the Flex, Taurus, and Mustang, and the feel is powerful without being overly sensitive. And with the Boss 302 and Shelby GT 500, when you increase the size of the front rotors to 14 inches and add four-piston and six-piston calipers by the Italian company Brembo, you've got the best stopping power money can buy. The chassis and electronic power steering is adjustable to Comfort, Standard or Sport. The names of the modes are apt. Comfort mode kept the ride comfortable when driving over rough pavement, Sport mode improved responsiveness on winding roads. We found the electronic stability control effective without being intrusive. The 650-horsepower Shelby GT 500 joins the 2013 Mustang lineup. You read that right, 650 horsepower. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The looks of the Mustang keep evolving nicely. It was the best looking of the reborn retro machines when it was redesigned in 2005, and it's only gotten better looking since then. For 2013, Mustang gets another facelift, with a stronger and cleaner grille and front fascia, incorporating the air intakes and doing away with all the flat-black plastic from before. New HID projector-beam headlamps have two LED streaks at their sides, a look that will take getting used to. The sequential LED taillamps are another matter, instantly pretty on the nice rear end that's true to '65 Mustang. At the rear, there's new body-colored fascia on the 2013 Mustang, again replacing flat black pieces (good riddance). Another improvement for 2013 is the loss of the flat-black rockers; they're now body-colored and grownup. And there are many new wheel designs for 2013. Overall, the 2013 Mustang looks tougher and more Mustangy than ever. The combination of open-mouthed grille and bulging hood gives the 2013 Mustang muscular distinction. The GT boasts real black vents, in the bulging hood over its beefy 5.0-liter V8. The chrome Mustang galloping horse logo against the black eggcrate grille, on the base V6 model, also looks hot, and traditional. The foglamps go inside the grille like bookends on the silver horse, also just like 1965. The sideview mirrors do something cool: when the unlock button on the remote is pressed, an image of a galloping horse in white LED light appears on the ground like a spotlight on a stage. The small triangular rear window is a stroke of design brilliance, and makes the roofline sleek. It's wonderfully and totally true to the 1965 Mustang fastback, which used vertical fake louvers in that triangular roofline sweep. The twin wide stripes on the 2013 Shelby GT that's coming in summer of 2012 are classic. Some of the other graphics packages are dubious. But you could for example get a V6 and add Shelby wide stripes. Casual glances won't know it's not a V8 under the hood. And not when you accelerate away, either. There are two new colors for 2013: Deep Impact Blue and Gotta Have It Green, which is kind of mellow in a loud green kind of way. Our favorite color is still Grabber Blue, which on another continent would be French Racing Blue. And then there's black, and Mustangs always look GREAT in solid black, it's one of the many reasons it's easy to buy one. Ford makes it easy to stand out in style with a Mustang. There are many styles of wheels mated to the 11 different models. Some are lovely, some we're not crazy about. We will say that the 18-inch painted aluminum wheels that were on the Mustang GT Premium we drove were gorgeous. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression We were able to get decent seat time in four Mustang models: a 3.7-liter V6 Premium with manual and automatic transmission and a 5.0-liter V8 GT Premium with manual and automatic. The Mustang V6 is EPA-rated at 19/31 miles per gallon City/Highway, but we didn't get anywhere near that, running it hard on twisty two-lanes. With 305 horsepower, it's more powerful than the V8 of just a few years ago. It's called TI-VCT, for Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing, a system that precisely times the valve openings to increase power, throttle response and fuel mileage, while reducing emissions. The V6 is fairly high-revving, reaching its horsepower peak at 6500 rpm, while its 280 foot-pounds of torque peak at 4250 rpm, so it's good to play with. The V6 will get you down the road as fast as a driver needs to go, 0 to 60 in the low 5-second range. Almost as good, there's a new exhaust system that makes it sound like more like a V8. The V8 rumble isn't quite there, but the wimpy whine of a V6 isn't there either. If the V6 is as fast as a driver needs to go, it's not necessarily as fast he or she wants to go. The Mustang GT with its 5.0-liter engine making 420 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque will do 0 to 60 in the mid 4-second range. But we don't want to quantify the kick-ass acceleration of the Mustang models with numbers. We've got fast (V6), faster (V8 GT), faster-plus (Boss 302), and scary fast (Shelby GT 500). The Mustang GT, with its smooth, rumbling and growling engine, feels more like an old-school Mustang. And with 420 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque, it snaps your neck right quickly, on the way to a quarter-mile time of about 13 seconds flat. That makes it a couple tenths quicker than the Chevrolet Camaro SS, even with Chevy's big 6.2-liter engine and 426 horsepower. But the Mustang is 230 pounds lighter, and that makes a big difference in acceleration. Now try 444 horsepower in the Boss 302. But you don't need to. In fact, you can get the Track Package and Recaro Package on the GT, and end up with most of the Boss for a much lower price. Do the math, and it's 95 percent of the horsepower. What you don't get, is the grown-up non-retro instrumentation with the Boss. We give both the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions the highest marks, but we especially love the manual. It's tight, has a short throw, delivers secure shifts every time, is easy to heel-and-toe, and it's totally tolerant of aggressive downshifts. You'll love shifting this Mustang so we say go for the manual and stay true. The manual comes with Hill Start Assist, which makes choosing it easier. No worries about rolling back when starting off on a steep incline. And we love and appreciate the pure programming for the 6-speed SelectShift manual automatic. We highly praise Mustang engineers for recognizing that sporty drivers do not like to have their wishes ignored by their manual automatic transmission, nor do they like being told what to do by their manual automatic transmission. The SelectShift is literal; it shifts into the gear you select. It won't downshift in a curve on you, or upshift before you want it to. However, we hate the ergonomics of the SelectShift. Shifts are made with a button on the lever that's much too hard to reach. Up or down, you shift gears with your right thumb, using one small button on the left side of the shift lever. Your thumb has to find the right spot on the button each time, often quickly, when your hand really needs to be on the steering wheel. But even if your thumb lands on the right spot, your elbow has to be raised and your wrist cocked, to better orient your thumb joint. If only the SelectShift simply worked lever-forward and lever-back, like others, it would be acceptable, although paddles would be even better. This one is a deal breaker. The Camaro has paddle shifters, and the Dodge Challenger shifts by moving the lever from side-to-side, as it has since 1996, when Dodge invented manual-automatic shifting in the Stratus sedan. Brakes are good. Ford engineers have revised the braking system of the Flex, Taurus, and Mustang, and the feel is powerful without being overly sensitive, for all of them. And with the Boss and Shelby, when you increase the size of the front rotors to 14 inches and add four-piston and six-piston calipers by the Italian company Brembo, you've got the best. As for ride quality, the chassis on both the V6 and GT is adjustable to Comfort, Standard or Sport, and that pretty much takes care of it. The electronic power steering gets adjusted in the bargain. We ran it in Comfort over patchy two-lanes and in the city, and it was comfortable; we ran it in Sport when we picked up the pace on two-lanes, and were pleased with its steady responsiveness, even on wet corners. There was one IndyCar driver there with the journalists, and in his review he trashed the handling as either pushing at the front wheels or loose at the rear wheels, sometimes both in the same corner; we don't doubt him one bit, but we wonder how hard you have to drive the car to feel that. He added, by the way, that for a car of the Mustang's price, the power and handling were exceptional. And that's what we'll say. Another thing we liked was the programming of the stability control. It was effective, without being intrusive at any time. We threw the tail out on purpose, a number of times, and hammered the throttle expecting the tires to spin on the wet road, but the gas was not taken away from the driver, just invisibly modulated. Great job, Ford. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The 2013 Mustang interior doesn't keep up with the exterior, which is disappointing. The standard steering wheel, even on the Boss 302 and Shelby GT 500, looks like it was borrowed from some nondescript sedan; we wish Ford had instead borrowed the lovely steering wheel from the new Taurus SHO. The trim and soft plastic on the dash are appealing, especially in faux aluminum, though there are some hard plastic bits, namely in the doors, and flimsy plastic hinges on things. The overall shape of the dash is undramatic, but the dash layout and switch panels are uncomplicated and effective. Most controls are big buttons, although climate and radio are big knobs. Premium and up models have standard ambient lighting in five selectable colors. We think retro instrumentation has worn off. We don't really care to be reminded of the 1970s every time we look at the speedometer or tachometer, and that's what you get with the V6 and GT. On the Boss and Shelby, the numbers on the gauges aren't retro, and they're way more pleasing. We like how Ford pulls off the exterior retro style, but instruments are another matter. You don't just look at them, you use them. Retro-looks good, retro function bad. On the base Mustang V6, you get a small fuel and temp gauge, inserted into the speedo. There's also what Ford calls a four-gauge cluster, which is digital information in a box between the retro speedo and tach. But it's distracting to have to click arrows on the steering wheel to read the numbers called a gauge. On some models the 4.2-inch LCD screen between the tach and speedo provides more vehicle information, accessed by using that five-way button on the steering wheel. It displays not only basic information, but test-pilot things like air/fuel mixture and cylinder head temperature. It features Track Apps, which displays g-forces, shows acceleration times in quarter-mile and 0-60 increments, and reveals braking times. It also does automatic and countdown starts. It's a toy, not a need, nor is it much use for most drivers. The cloth bucket seats that come standard are terrific. They hug the body with material that's rugged. The leather seats on the Premium models don't seem to be shapely enough or have enough bolstering for the Mustang expectation. However, the optional Recaro seats available for on all models in cloth or suede are so great that we'd say they're a good investment, if not necessity. For a rumbling V8, the Mustang GT is quiet inside, and the V6 is even quieter. So the Shaker Pro audio system can blow your head off. Like Ford says, a complete acoustic experience that simulates being at a live performance. There are two Shaker sound systems; in the Mustang GT Premium it's eight speakers and six channels, while the Shaker Pro with nine speakers was found to be so loud during testing that extra sound-absorption material was added to the Mustang. Ford's problematic MyFordTouch is missing but not missed in the Mustang. However there is SYNC with voice command, which works well to choose music. Voice-activated navigation is available on upper models. Drivers of all sizes should be able to find a comfortable seating position. The steering wheel tilts, although it doesn't telescope, and we wish it would. There's good head and leg room up front, and visibility through the windshield is good, especially for a low-slung coupe. There's considerably more room and better visibility than in the Camaro. Naturally, the two-passenger rear seat is no place for adults. Rear headroom is limited by the rake of the coupe roof, and leg room is minimal, even with the front seats moved forward. That's nothing new. It comes with the territory of such a car and its shape. Small price to be paid for such proportions. The side mirrors have convex blind-spot panels in their top outer corner, a rearward visibility solution that we like at least as much as electronic blind spot lights and beepers with all their false alarms. The coupe's rear pillars don't block over-the-shoulder visibility, but it's hard to see out the back in the convertible with the top up. The optional back-up camera and reverse sensing system help. The Mustang has a lower beltline than the Camaro, allowing better visibility to the sides. The advantage became especially apparent when we compared a Mustang and a Camaro on an autocross course. We could easily see the cones from inside the Mustang, but not from inside the Camaro. The Mustang convertible comes uses a power fabric top and glass rear window. The top is released with two slick latches within the driver's reach. The top and frame drop behind the rear seats. The vinyl tonneau cover must be installed manually, and costs an additional $160. The convertible top's storage space also reduces trunk volume nearly one-third. The Mustang coupe's trunk has 13.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is comparable to that in a compact-to-mid-size sedan. The opening isn't particularly big and the lift-over is high, but the coupe's 50/50 fold-down rear seats expand cargo volume substantially. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary With 11 models ranging from 305 hp and about $23k to 650 hp and $60k, if you like Mustangs at all, there's one for you. The entry level Mustang V6 Coupe with a manual 6-speed transmission is a big winner for the price, and with a few options it can be made better than any muscle car of old. The Mustang GT with its 5.0-liter V8 is the rumbling Mustang we all know and love. The Boss 302 and Shelby GT 500 are 21st century muscle cars, both offering tremendous performance for the price. The retro-styled 2007 Mustang was ripe for customizers to start mining the past, but none did it so successfully as this Parnelli Jones tribute car built by Saleen. One part vintage Boss 302, one part modern Saleen, and one part race car, it has an awesome look that is nostalgic but still very contemporary. Finish quality, as you'd expect from Saleen, is exemplary, and the custom Grabber Orange paint is very, very close to the original 1970 hue. The finish is still like new, and with only 2340 original miles, that really shouldn't be a surprise. Boss 302 stripes, big gumballs on the doors and hood, and, of course, a Shaker hood all contribute to the awesome look. And for nostalgia fans, it also includes a chin spoiler, rear window slats, and a rear wing, all designed to emulate the car Parnelli Jones used to dominate the 1970 Trans-Am series. Heck, it's even got hood pins! The interior is a bit more restrained, but even here there are custom touches and tips of the hat to the vintage ponies that played such a big role in Ford's motoring history. Most obvious are the Grabber Orange seat inserts in the deeply sculpted buckets, which add a bit of color to the otherwise monochromatic interior. The pillow-tufted seat backs are reminiscent of '70s Fords as well, and the entire dashboard is a retro tribute to the 1968 Mustang GT. A few tasteful upgrades complements of Saleen include a special "PJ" horn button, a pair of auxiliary gauges in their own pods atop the dash, and the signatures of both Steve Saleen and Parnelli Jones himself, right there in the center stack. A few chrome dress-up items add some sparkle and custom gauge faces are a constant reminder that this isn't a garden-variety Mustang. It's all in pretty much as-new condition and these cars only came loaded, so it's got just about every option you could imagine. The trunk is untouched, both in terms of modifications and condition, reinforcing this car's as-new image. The engine started out as a garden-variety 4.6 liter V8, but the wizards at Saleen punched it out to a real-world 5.0 liters, the limit for Trans-Am series competition. The Shaker hood is completely functional, and the rest of the engine was treated to things like a set of ported aluminum heads, custom camshafts, forged pistons, steel crank and rods, and oversized fuel injectors, all of which are designed to emulate the race feel of the Trans-A Boss 302s. It's not necessarily a horsepower monster (but there's certainly plenty on tap) but rather a powerplant that feels like it could rev forever and this car is very, very fast. The 5-speed manual gearbox shifts beautifully and powers a stock rear end which now hangs on a sophisticated Watts linkage suspension for improved handling. In fact, the whole suspension got a Saleen makeover, including coil-over shocks, oversized sway bas, and upgraded bushings. A Saleen-spec exhaust system sounds downright wicked and those 19-inch custom wheels emulate the period Minilites used in competition, although they now wear 285/35/19 Pirelli rubber. Future collectable? Absolutely. This car is so filled with history that you almost need a trailer to haul it all. Beautifully built, insanely fast, and perfectly balanced, this might just be the ultimate retro Mustang. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Ford Mustang defined the pony car segment in 1964 and was a runaway sales success. It helped create a niche that exploded in popularity with the Camaro, Firebird, Barracuda, Cougar, Javelin, and Challenger. They're all gone now, leaving the Mustang with no direct competition, at least for now. Fortunately, today's Mustang, introduced three years ago, is a superb example of the genre. The Mustang GT comes with a 300-hp V8 and is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The American pony car has never been better than the current Mustang GT. The Mustang is available as a coupe or convertible. The Mustang V6 Deluxe is a nice cruiser and its 4.0-liter V6 engine is a solid performer, all for around $20,000. But the Mustang GT is what the Mustang is all about and the basis of the legend. For 2008, a new Bullitt model joins the herd. Faithfully styled to celebrate the hero car in the famous chase scene starring Steve McQueen, the 2008 Mustang Bullitt is tuned to a higher level than the standard GT. Some media have positioned the Bullitt as nothing more than a hopped up Mustang, but that sells what's going on here a bit short. Rather than simply bolting on some modifications and re-tuning the setup, Ford took the higher road, thoroughly re-engineering and painstakingly massaging the Bullitt to attain its additional performance. In other words, they did it the hard way, the right way. Ford used technology learned from development of the Shelby cars, and the chief engineer for the Mustang says technology gained from the development of the Bullitt will be used in the next-generation Mustang. In any case, the Bullitt is more responsive than the Mustang GT. We found the Bullitt to be superbly balanced, making for a more enjoyable, more sophisticated car to drive on a daily basis, a car that responds beautifully to the driver's whims. Ford plans to build about 7,000 Bullitt models. For 2008, three Shelby models are available: The 319-hp Shelby GT comes in coupe and convertible form along with the 540-hp Shelby GT500KR coupe. The Shelby GT500 offers near-Corvette performance and we found it easy to drive, and fun for gymkhanas, race tracks or back roads. Its solid rear axle is bouncy on bad pavement, however, and all this comes at a substantial price increase. For 2008, front side airbags come standard on all Mustangs, and high-intensity discharge headlights and interior ambient lighting are newly available. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Nothing says modern American sporty car better than the Mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on more than 40 years of pony-car heritage. The current Mustang features classic design cues that have defined Mustangs since the 1960s: C-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967-70 models. Yet the Mustang follows modern trends by offering ever-larger wheels, including two distinct 18-inch wheel designs for the GT and a new 18-inch wheel for V6 models. So trimmed, the Mustang looks more aggressively handsome than ever, and much like the concept cars that grabbed everyone's attention at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. And while the Mustang's retro-inspired look pleases the eye, there's a lot of modern technology you don't see, starting with an aluminum hood to trim weight. The modern Mustang is based on the same mechanical platform as the Jaguar S-Type, albeit with some cost-trimming measures such as its live-axle rear suspension. All Mustang engines are secured to the body with hydraulic mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, Ford has given the current Mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the Mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. Like their muscle-era namesakes, Shelby models get unique front grilles and bumper fascia. The GT500 grille is designed to provide a functionally larger and unimpeded air intake, while reducing airflow under the body. The GT500 has a unique hood with dual air-extraction slits. Around back the GT500 has a vintage-style ducktail spoiler on the decklid and a series of four strakes under the rear fascia. Carroll Shelby's signature striking-Cobra emblem glowers from the center vertical portion of the decklid of the GT500, a characteristically off-center position in the grille, and both front quarter panels. It comes with 18-inch rims with the Ford SVT (Special Vehicle Team) logo. Just as in 1968, the Shelby models are topped by Le Mans-style racing stripes. They look terrific, though we're not sure they should carry down onto the rear bumper where they compete with the rear license plate. GT500 convertibles feature a premium fabric for the top. The Shelby GT500KR has a carbon fiber hood with hood pins and a unique hood scoop, as well as 40th anniversary Shelby snake emblems. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Mustang improves on those things that have appealed to so many different kinds of drivers for more than 40 years, and it nearly eliminates the bad traits of traditional pony cars. In general, the good has gotten better and the bad, less so. The previous-generation (1994-2004) Mustang was built around a body shell that dated from 1979, and it was about as stiff as wet rope. Ford claims the current Mustang's body/frame is 31 percent stiffer and it feels it. This Mustang is much more rigid and rattle-free than its predecessor. A rigid foundation provides the basis for a host of good things, including improved ride quality, sharper handling, and less interior vibration. This solidity applies to the convertible as well. By their nature, convertibles don't offer the chassis rigidity of hardtops. Cars that cost five times as much as the Mustang tend to get shakier when the fixed roof is removed to design a convertible version. In the Mustang convertible, you will notice some shimmy in the windshield frame that you'll never see in the coupe, but overall rigidity is impressive. The convertible's folding top is simple and straightforward to operate. Unhook it from the windshield header and it powers back behind the rear seat with the touch of a button. The ultimate in posing requires that you manually install the optional boot cover, but the folded, exposed top and frame don't look bad without it. The wheelbase is relatively long, six inches longer than the previous generation (pre-2005), and that makes a difference in terms of ride quality. The ride is fairly smooth, even with the available 18-inch wheels. The rear suspension uses coil springs and a lightweight three-link design with a Panhard bar to keep all motion under constant control. It's about as good as a solid-axle suspension gets, and it does a good job of controlling skipping and bouncing at the back of the car. While many high-performance fans wish Ford would give the Mustang an independent rear suspension for better handling and ride quality, the current setup does a fine job on both counts. The steering is crisp, precise and confidence inspiring. The brakes work well in high-speed highway driving situations, as we found during a test in Los Angeles. If you order ABS, you automatically get traction control, which has a dash-mounted off switch for special situations, including drag racing. The 4.0-liter V6 engine is a solid performer. The five-speed automatic's gear ratios seem well matched to the available torque. When the automatic gets into overdrive fifth gear, the engine goes quietly into economy mode until called upon for a lane change, a pass, or an uphill charge. This is a large-displacement V6 and it sounds more muscular at full throttle than any previous Ford V6 engine. It rates 16/24 city/highway mpg with the automatic transmission, and 17/26 mpg with the manual; those are the 2008 fuel economy estimates using the EPA's new, more realistic testing methods, resulting in numbers much lower than last year's even though no changes have been made to the vehicles. Indeed, the V6 Deluxe is the most popular model (about 70 percent of Mustangs sold are V6s), and we like it. For just around $20,000, it delivers good torque, good acceleration and generally good road manners, with a sporty feel. And while it has less power than the V8 and smaller tires, the V6 seems slightly more eager to turn in for corners, a bit more agile than the nose-heavy GT. (The GT weighs about 200 pounds more, and almost all of that is on the front wheels.) The GT, on the other hand, is a 300-hp, five-speed pavement-ripper for about $26,000. The three-valve-per-cylinder V8 engine features both variable camshaft timing and electronic throttle control. The Mustang GT will run 0-60 mph in about 5.5 seconds; it will out-brake a large number of sporty cars; and it handles better on canyon roads that any previous Mustang GT, with a minimu. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Mustang interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, but not as well done. It's sporty appearance and straightforward in function, but materials quality is lacking. There's a heavy dose of 1967 Mustang inside, with the dash divided into distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align with the gauges across the dash, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse-and-tricolor-bars logo. While the look is retro cool, many of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, especially the plastics on the dash panel. An interior upgrade package adds red leather seats, red door inserts and red floor mats on cars with appropriate exterior colors. Mustang offers an optional color-changeable instrument panel display, with 125 color schemes to choose from. It's a gimmick, to be sure, but it's easy to use, and it can brighten your day, and especially your night, as you drive. We're all for that. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days (just like in the original Mustangs). The available Interior Upgrade Package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts instead of chrome, goes a long way toward eliminating the feel of cheapness. These are the good old days in terms of roominess in the Mustang. The 107-inch wheelbase and 187.6-inch overall length of the current model are the longest of any Mustang since 1973, and are within an inch of the dimensions of the 1969-70 model. But Ford has learned something about space efficiency since then, so today's Mustang offers more front-seat hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room than any previous generation. We found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners. The back seat, however, isn't much more accommodating than in the old fastback 2+2 variant of 1965-68. It's not a place adults will want to spend any time. However, it folds flat, just like in the old days, to expand luggage capacity. And even without folding the back seat, the Mustang's trunk is as large as those in some more overtly practical sedans. Seats in the Shelby GT500 are more aggressively bolstered, and the positions of the speedometer and tachometer are swapped. The GT500 is upholstered in black leather, with or without red inserts. All interior chrome is replaced by satin-finish aluminum for reduced glare. Snake logos slither on the seatbacks and steering-wheel hub. The standard sound system that comes in the Mustang is good. The 500-watt upgrade is reasonably priced as part of the premium package, and adds a six-CD changer. The 1000-watt upgrade will impress most audiophiles, but the extra subwoofers in the trunk steal a good chunk of cargo space. We'd be inclined to pass on those. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Ford Mustang looks and feels like an all-American car, and that's a good thing. It's quick and fun to drive and offers combination of style, performance, and handling that's hard to beat for the money. The V6 Deluxe is a stylish, sporty cruiser. The GT and Shelby GT are serious performance cars. And the Shelby GT500 raises it to near Corvette performance levels. 2001 Mustang Bullitt GT #5122 out of 5582 that were built. There were 723 True Blue Bullitt’s built total which is the lowest production number out of the three colors. This Bullitt has the only available option which is the Mach 460 Sound System. I am the original owner and this car has never been driven or even exposed to rain. The car is listed in the High and Dry registry on the IMBOC Bullitt Club website. This car has been stored in a climate control garage since new. The only part replaced on the car is the battery and the original one is included in this sale. The car pictured has a new set of tires and wheels with Nitto 245/45-17 Front and 315/35-17 rear. These tires have less then 1000 miles on them and the original tires have approximately 6500 miles on them and are included in this sale. The car cover pictured and car show sign is also included in the sale. Please note the engine compartment shots showing that the paint has not even worn off the pulleys as well as the lack of rust on the bolt head that you would normally see on a car of this age. This shows that the car was properly cared for and stored properly. The car was driven approximately 5000 the first year and has been driven about 250 miles every year to keep it up. The oil has been changed every year even though it only has a couple of hundred miles on it. Antifreeze has been changed every three years. I have only used premium fuel and pumped it out every 6 to 8 months to keep everything fresh. All of the original paperwork including original bill of sale, title, owner’s manual, window sticker, two sets of factory keys, etc are included. This car still smells new when you open the door. Fortunately, the guys at Roush knew what they were doing when this 2005 Roush GT went together. #05-706 offers a unique, high-performance look backed by an upgraded powerplant, so there's no question that this pony not only talks the talk, but definitely walks the walk. The retro-look Mustang is a great-looking car, no doubt about that, but for some folks, it lacks the right attitude. Jack Roush and his guys correct that particular issue with a great-looking body kit that's also functional. It includes a deep front chin spoiler, block-off panels for the quarter windows, custom rear bumper, and a longer-flatter wing atop the deck lid. Of course a set of white stripes atop the Sonic Blue paint helps with the race-ready attitude and the paint shop up at Roush does a great job of making everything match and look like it came from the factory. This car has led a good life, so it remains in very good shape with only a few minor signs of use and age, and you know that someone spent a lot of Saturday afternoons polishing it up for shows. The fog lamps in the grille are a Shelby design cue that works especially well here and it proudly wears its Roush-assigned serial number on the front bumper, letting everyone know this isn't a garden-variety Mustang with a body kit, but a pedigreed car with legitimate history. Upgrading the interior doesn't make a car go faster, so the Roush guys pretty much left it as the factory built it. But that's good news, because the gray leather seats are comfortable, the A/C is effective, and the retro-inspired design works extremely well with the Roush attitude. Carbon fiber adorns the dash and center console and yes, that's Jack Roush's signature on the passenger's side airbag cover, giving this car some genuine pedigree. An A-pillar pod with aftermarket white-faced gauges puts additional information in your line-of-sight, while the factory gauges are treated to matching white faces for a different look. Everything you could get on a stock GT is here, including power windows and locks, cruise control, a tilt wheel, and a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system with iPod capability. It's all in excellent shape, much like the bodywork, with minimal signs of use and a very complete look that says this car was loved. Even the trunk looks new. The biggest upgrade is under the hood, where Ford's 4.6-liter V8 is augmented with a number of performance-enhancing tricks, including Ford Racing camshafts, shorty headers, a custom ECM calibration, and an off-road H-pipe that makes a huge difference all by itself. The engine components include trick composite valve covers and a color-matched intake that rests comfortably under a chrome shock tower brace. The Mustang's standard 5-speed gearbox is a joy to row through the gears and there's enough gear out back to get it rolling in a hurry without being tiring on the highway. Eibach springs and shocks lower the ride height about two inches and it rolls on 2014 Mustang wheels with 18-inch performance rubber. Owned by an ASE certified mechanic, this fully documented Roush offers huge bang for the buck with V8 performance that's still relevant today. Elegantly blending muscular styling with a race inspired suspension to create a Ford Mustang that is as confident on the track as it is on the streets. At the core of the Stage 2 Mustang is the ROUSH sport-tuned suspension system, 18” chrome wheels with ultra high performance Cooper RS3 tires and the unique ROUSH aero body kit. Combined with a list of options ranging from 20" wheels to a Rear Seat Delete with "X"-Brace, this Mustang is sure to stand out from the rest of the crowd. The ROUSH Stage 2 styling components include the sixth generation body kit, referred to as the "R6" aero body package. The R6 aero body package starts at the front of the car with the ROUSH designed upper grille, high-flow lower opening (grille eliminator), corner fascia aero pockets with driving lamps and front chin splitter. Moving towards the back are the ROUSH rocker panel and rear fascia side splitters to give the car an aggressive, low stance. The rear of the car showcases the ROUSH three-piece rear decklid spoiler giving the car a sleek look without obstructing the view out the rear window. Rounding out the tail end is the new ROUSH rear aero valance featuring race-inspired diffusers made to seamlessly fit the ROUSH’s dual chambered, chrome exhaust tips. The Stage 2 Mustang race inspired suspension compliments the 420hp 5.0L coyote engine. Enhancements include a larger, stiffer front stabilizer bar to reduce body roll and provide balanced, neutral handling. It also includes twin-tube shocks with unique valving to keep maximum tire contact patch on the ground, even while driving on uneven terrain. The springs have an increased rate as well and are pre-set so they won’t sag. In addition, particular attention was paid to the bushings for more compliance over low speed bumps and the jounce bumpers which are designed to act as a spring assist. The last part of the ROUSH handling package includes 18-inch by 10-inch, cast aluminum, five-spoke wheels wrapped in super sticky, Cooper RS3 ultra high-performance summer tires that were co-developed by Cooper Tire and ROUSH Performance. Interior branding touches on the Stage 2 contain ROUSH embroidered floor mats, a ROUSH center console button, a Stage 2 dash medallion, Jack Roush signature graphic on the dash and an under the hood is a serialized Stage 2 plaque.
