Built and campaigned for many years by the famed "Mr. 409" Lamar Walden and his son Robbie out of their Doraville, Georgia Shop, this '62 Chevy Bel Air Bubbletop utterly dominated the NMCA "World's Fastest Street Car" series and the Super Chevy Show's Outlaw series until the late - 1990's. Retired from competition after it was deemed too fast with its 7-second, 200-mph capabilities in the quarter - mile, it remains famous as the "World's Fastest 409." The Bel Air is powered by an engine custom-built by Lamar, who bored and stroked it to a massive 484 cubic inches and topped it off with custom-built Z-11 Style cylinder heads with lifter valley and intake. A 0.990-lift cam controls huge 2 1/2-inch intake valves. The engine was dyno-tested at 910 hp on racing gas, with peak power at 9,200 RPM, driving a Lenco 4-speed and a Mark Williams 4.88:1 rear end. The Bel Air rides on a custom-build funny car chassis by Byrd of North Carolina, and the car s certified to ETs as low as 7.5 seconds. Predictably, the Waldens attracted major sponsors for their Bel Air, including Flowmaster Mufflers, Quaker State Oil, Barry Grant Carburetors, Lawson Tools, Griffin Radiators, Mickey Thompson Racing Tires, and of course, Lamar Walden Automotive. With lots of history, especially on the East Coast, the Bel Air was inducted into the famous Cragar 7-Second Club and it can still be raced today. A recent letter from Rob Walden provides a first-hand account of his experiences with the famous Bel Air. "We always finished and qualified on the Top 5 at all of the events and were named in the Top 10 NMCA fastest for three years straight, 8th, 5th,and 3rd overall for the year. NMCA required a 25-mile drive before you could complete at their Finals in which the car always finished without a problem. At Super Chevy we won Gainesville, Atlanta, Indy, and were runner-up at Houston. The car was featured on Inside Drag Racing TV for the Super Chevy win in Atlanta, where we beat reigning NMCA champ Annette Summers. We were also featured in the Super Chevy Magazine and the MNCA magazine...It was the best driving of all the cars I ever raced." Need we say any more? It also has an on board jack, and a fire system. Basiclly race ready.
