The hard top is a two piece (surrey) style made by Parish Plastics. Parish Plastics is now Smooth Line. Smooth Line no longer makes the two piece top. Triumph TR4A IRS, 1967The last and the best of the early Triumphs Very clean body, repainted once over the original paint in original red, excellent chassis with no signs of rust (but a few spots showing professional and proper repair), excellent original factory floors, NO undercoating, just perfect original sheet metal. For a near fifty year old Triumph, this car is amazingly clean underneath. Engine was just rebuilt, shows 150-160 psi compression in every cylinder, 75 psi oil pressure on the highway when warm, no smoke, quiet valves, and no dreadful oil leaking. Rebuilt SU carbs, new air filters, runs beautifully. Freshly rebuilt transmission and brand new clutch. Brakes: new rotors, calipers, wheel cylinders, pads and shoes. Shocks seem to be in good condition and passed 'the bounce test.' Also, no clunks in the rear end, an important consideration in any IRS car. Wire wheels were primed and painted, seem to be in good condition, exhaust is reasonably quiet and has a sound appropriate for the car, interior is in very good condition considering the seats are probably original, recently installed a new dash top. Convertible top, tonneau, and boof cover all seem to be original and in very good condition. Also just had a new windshield seal and compression strip installed, new door seals, all original gauges work and even the original AM radio works fine. Which is really incredible. Overall, a very nice example of this collector's Triumph, ready to drive anywhere, rated at 110 mph performance, soft ride, clean engine and trunk bays, has spare wheel and tire, jack and knock off hammer. This is an unmolested 1965 TR4A IRS. It has original 50,300 miles on the clock. The floors and trunk are solid, the brown material in the image is rug not rust. It will need quarter panels and lower rocker panels. The engine turns, I have not attempted to start it as I do not want to suck the gas through the engine. The convertible frame is in good shape and the canvas is there although would probably need replacing. The seats are ok, door panels and dash are ok. You can get it running and drive a patina vehicle or give her a full restoration and have one the enthusiast will envy. This is a numbers-matching car with a clear title and lots of restoration parts included. The car has been stored since 1978. Upon information and belief, this is a UK build gray market car over from Germany. The TR4A looks like a TR4. The cars share some body parts and have a similar engine, but everything else differs. The TR4A is on a wider frame with a redesigned suspension. The front suspension is adjustable for camber and the rear suspension is independent. 1965 was the first year this upgrade was introduced. Harry Webster’s IRS design started around 1962 to evolve into a 1965 TR4A, the TR4A was as different from the TR4, as it is from the TR3A. The new chassis-frame had a radically different layout from the previous cars. The rear suspension was semi-trailing wishbone plus coil spring, that design was proven on the Triumph 2000 saloon. The TR4A kept lever arm shocks for ease of installation. The IRS cars received a massive pressed-steel bridge piece to support the differential casing and provide upper anchor points for the coil springs. When prototypes were made ready for the road, the new chassis was pronounced “safe for 120 mph” so the 2138cc engine was given its final boost, to 104bhp at 4700 rpm. The TR4A was phased in at the beginning of 1965. Body production changes were limited to a new grille, decoration and badging, and with new body-to-chassis mountings. Triumph was now the first British car manufacturer to have all-independent suspensions under every car in their line. In Q1 2011 there were approximately 789 licensed and 153 SORN TR4A's registered with the DVLAI can deliver for $2.00 / mile.

1966 Triumph TR4A IRS - Almost all Original This particular Triumph model won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Sebring 12 hour race of 1966 largely due to the innovation of the independent rear suspension (IRS) which was first released in 1966 as seen by the IRS on the back of the car. Coincidentally in 1996 that was the year the Star Trek season was first released and the first episode was called "The Man Trap", whether these two powerhouses were related has been a mystery since. What we do know is that while one involved a salt sucking alien killing it's victims this car clearly gives life to it's owners. You could say they are kind of yin and yang to each other? This particular car however has had two owners making you the third owner of this beautiful classic British car. The car was originally bought in Coventry England by a Glen Bale. Glen purchased this car brand new for his wife for her birthday in 1966. She said to herself that any man that is willing to give her this car is a man she was to spend the rest of her life with and she was right. They used this car to tour the surrounding areas within England before moving to the states in the 1970's to follow their American Dream. They kept this car in good shape and relatively unused till they sold it to be restored. The man restoring this gorgeous car is a Leo Wood and who has since came down with Cancer but is in remission currently and is unable to keep the car and maintain it. This car was in a recent photo shoot and some of the pics are seen here. If the pics of the lady tell you anything it's that this car gets attention anywhere it goes, not only does it sound good, look good but it will treat you even better! Just about everything in the car is still the original items except for this list: New Hood, front Bumper, front fenders,electric starter, distributor cap & wires, Fuel pump, new disk, brake line, dashboard, HU6 Carburetors, front light turn signal, grille, horn, shocks, clutch and tires. The engine has been completely rebuilt. This means items such as the seats, carpet and even the convertible top are all original. This car does not have the overdrive option and the body is all Metal.

The exterior adorns a handsome respray in her original color, all panel gaps are consistent and the paint shines with a deep luster. The interior has clearly been reupholstered as the condition is excellent, and the seats show little to no wear. Her wooden dash looks beautiful with no cracks or peeling. She wears correct chrome wire wheels shod with newer Dunlop rubber. All exterior chrome has good shine and little to no pitting. Mechanically this TR4 is in top shape, always regularly serviced. She was the recent beneficiary of a recent full tune-up with carburetor rebuild, brake system overhaul, including calipers and pads, as well as a new exhaust system. The underside of the car is excellent the floors are solid with no issues. She runs drives and stops just as she should. The soft top is in excellent condition, with good fit and the rubber trim is fresh and pliable. The top bows were restored and work as designed. A tonneau cover and boot cover come with the car as well. This is an excellent driver quality tr4a, with no stories, issues or needs. She has a clear CT registration, as a 1966. She wears correct chrome wire wheels shod with newer Dunlop rubber. All exterior chrome has good shine and little to no pitting. Mechanically this TR4 is in top shape, always regularly serviced. She was the recent beneficiary of a recent full tune-up with carburetor rebuild, brake system overhaul, including calipers and pads, as well as a new exhaust system. The underside of the car is excellent the floors are solid with no issues. She runs drives and stops just as she should. The soft top is in excellent condition, with good fit and the rubber trim is fresh and pliable. The top bows were restored and work as designed.
