Professionally constructed at great expense approximately nine years ago, the vehicle was completely disassembled down to the frame and every component was rebuilt or replaced. It’s painted British Racing Green (from factory Jaguar ’00) and was reassembled using new hardware. All of the window seals were replaced (when washed, absolutely zero leaking), the seats were reupholstered and a new headliner was installed. Debate rages about exactly how many ’83 FJ40 were produced (I’ve read reports of anywhere from 299 to 350), but the simple fact is 1983 is a VERY collectible year for the FJ40 seeing as they were no longer available, nor imported, to the US after ’83. I personally have only seen a handful for sale over the years. While I love the stock look of the vintage FJ, I will admit the actual driving experience leaves a lot to be desired if you want to drive your FJ on any modern streets and/or freeways. Because of those points, I simply had to have this FJ when it was listed for sale three years ago due to the extensive mechanical improvements/upgrades. Inside and outside the original design and look has been preserved (no rear wheel-well cutting has occurred), yet the major mechanical components have been updated for greater & more reliable performance. The low horsepower (aka dangerously slow to accelerate & merge onto any modern freeway) 6-cylinder engine has been replaced with a modern 5.7L Vortec Fuel-Injected V8. The weak 4-speed transmission was removed in favor of a rebuilt (to stronger than stock) 5-speed NV4500 transmission with granny low (for awesome trail or stop-n-go traffic crawling performance) and overdrive for comfortable 65+ mph freeway driving. Modern power steering, air-conditioning and a host of other upgrades and performance enhancements were also performed to make this classic FJ perform as well (or better) as any modern SUV. The vehicle runs and works perfectly and has approximately 10,000 miles on it since the restoration (odometer works and still reads the original total mileage on vehicle of 72,250). Absolutely ZERO leaks from the engine, transmission, transfer case or any other component (it’s in my garage w/ no typical “classic car drips” that notoriously accompany older car ownership). This is a smooth running, reliable FJ with impressive performance and unmatched classic looks built with great pride and care over a three year period. Over $75,000 has been invested in the purchase, restoration and performance upgrades to the vehicle (and I’ve got a massive box full of every receipt to prove the parts and cost that went into the build). MY HISTORY WITH THE FJ + CA BAR REF’s As previously mentioned, I purchased this vehicle almost three years ago. I have always admired the looks & history of the FJ40 and have had it on my “Bucket List” of must-own vehicles since I was a young boy. My only dilemma was the fact I wanted a classic looking FJ, but preferred to have modern driving reliability and speed associated with the “Resto-Mod” culture of vehicle builds today. Anyone that follows the FJ world knows those desires pose two challenges; 1) They are rare to find already built, and 2) If you’re lucky to find one (usually built by one of the known restoration/upgrade performance shops) they are pushing 6-figures. While I can appreciate those builds, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay $80K+ for a “modern” driving FJ40. So when this vehicle came on the market in my price range, I had to have it. The only issue was it was built by a father & son team out of state (built in Minnesota, then the father moved to Michigan) that didn’t have to deal with the CA regulations associated with post 1975 cars and engine swaps. Before I purchased the vehicle, I spoke many times with the son who happened to be located in Northern CA and owned a number of AAMCO shops. Needless to say he was a “car-guy” and living in CA understood my concerns with purchasing the vehicle and getting it certified for CA street use. He was also a huge FJ fan (and owner) himself and assured me since the car was setup with all factory emissions in place, it shouldn’t be too difficult to certify it via the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) process. We knew there would no doubt be a few hurdles, but nothing that would ultimately be a show-stopper. To back up the assertion, he graciously offered to have me send the vehicle to him in NorCal, where he would store it in his shop and deal with the BAR inspections and take care of any issues that the referee might come up with for corrective actions. I therefore purchased the vehicle from his father and had it shipped to his son’s shop outside of Sacramento. It would be next to impossible for me to summarize almost three years of phone calls, emails and general history of what we went through (needless to say we’ve become friends through the process as we attempted to “Fight the Man” together), but to give you a general idea of the craziness we have been dealing with, I will list some of the NorCal BAR Ref disqualifiers over the course of the 3 inspections: Rear evap sensor missing (fine, that’s easy, the engine worked fine w/o it and in Michigan it wasn’t required, so we agreed to install another sensor and get the computer re-flashed).Failed because the “Check Engine” light on the dash wasn’t labeled (fine, we threw a sticker on).Headers were not factory to the ’96 Vortec engine (okay, we swapped to stock exhaust manifolds).K&N air cleaner didn’t have the model # sticker anymore; so we had to replace the perfectly working system with a new one so he could verify the model (okay, now it’s getting a little crazy…but wait…the insanity will grow…)The location of the cat was not correct since it needed to line up with that of the ’96 Tahoe schematic (since that’s where the engine came from). What? How could all the exhaust pipe & cat location be the same as on a Tahoe when obviously we are dealing with a Toyota FJ frame? That took a few rounds to finally resolve and eventually he signed off on the corrections we made (oh yeah, we still had to redo the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifold to the cat in order to change a few inches…as if those few inches of hollow pipe really matter…but I digress).We had to re-flash the computer a few times in order to eliminate a bunch of codes. Even though the vehicle ran perfectly, the testing showed fault codes for things like ABS & anti-theft systems associated w/ the Tahoe (which obviously are not on the ’83 FJ). So we sent the computer to a few custom shops out of state for the flashing. Then when we resolved the codes, the Ref failed us because the flashing was “Performed by a shop out of the state of CA.” What?!?! That was the first time he mentioned that, so back to the drawing board. Another flash in CA, yet he failed us again because, “The CA shop is not an approved Chevy dealership.” Are you kidding?!?! Since we didn’t want to have to re-flash yet again (remember, this is a perfectly working/running vehicle), we were able to get him to approve the flash by getting documentation from a local GM dealership that put in writing the flash was stock & matched with the VIN/ENGINE/TRANS of the system we had.Failed us because the speedometer was reading off from actual speed. When we asked for clarification, the initial response was “Can’t be greater than 5mph error.” When we pushed to see where that regulation was in writing, he wouldn’t/couldn’t produce it, yet still stood behind the fact we would fail. When we corrected the error to 5mph on another visit, the SAME Ref said it was still too high and it needed to be, “3mph or less error.” You can imagine the frustration that came! So an adjustment gear drive was installed in order to correct that issue.Finally, the latest failure came when they ran the computer checks to verify all the monitors have set. Sure enough we still had 1 evap monitor that wouldn’t set (again, even though the vehicle is running/performing flawlessly), it didn’t matter. We consulted multiple smog shops and even found per the BAR website/regs for passing emissions tests, that ’96-’99 vehicles can have up to ONE monitor that hasn’t set and will still pass smog. That info wasn’t good enough for him; he wanted ZERO issues and ALL monitors set.I’m leaving out a plethora of even more trivial issues no doubt but seeing as I wasn’t physically involved and it’s been so many years, I no doubt am not doing justice to how many hoops had to be jumped through. At that point in time (Sept 2015 & our 3rd BAR failure in the last 2+ years), I had had enough and decided I would bring the vehicle to SoCal and run it through my local BAR in Huntington Beach. I was convinced the Ref we dealt with in NorCal (the same “gentleman” for all 3 failures) no doubt had his high school sweetheart and/or wife run off with an FJ40 owner years ago and therefore absolutely refused to see another FJ on the road. So I traveled to NorCal, picked up the car and drove it back to SoCal in one day. Here I was, the owner of the vehicle for almost 3 years and driving (and more shockingly seeing) it for the first time. As expected, it performed flawlessly, didn’t miss a beat during the 6+ hr drive to SoCal. I have been using it for short around-town errands for the past few months, but have limited my time w/ it on the roads as obviously I’m concerned with getting pulled over without legal CA plates. I was able to get a BAR appointment for Dec 24th to see if my luck would be any different. And wouldn’t you know it, the Ref I encountered on Xmas Eve must have been related to The Grinch himself. I kid you not, when I pulled up for my 7am appointment and introduced myself and asked him the customary, “How are you doing?” He literally scowled at me and replied without even the slightest hint of friendliness, “I’ve been better! Pull the car into the bay and tell me what you’ve done since your last failure.” It was classic…where do they find these winners?!?! As you can probably guess, the results were no different. My frustrations lie in the fact that he mentioned the following issues, even though a number of them were supposedly resolved w/ Ref #1: He didn’t agree with the placement of the rear O2 sensorHe wasn’t sure he would agree the front exhaust pipe to cat was the correct lengthHe didn’t care for the location of the air filterHe too wanted to see all monitors set (even though he conceded CA smog laws for a ’96-’99 will allow up to 1 monitor not set, he wanted a perfectly clear system) Therefore, I left dejected and finally beaten. While I would love to keep fighting these bureaucratic idiots, that believe the letter of the law trumps the spirit, I have to concede I simply do not have the patients or time anymore. I debated taking the FJ to Texas where my father lives and registering it out there (where DMV actually cares about normal things like the working e-brake, lights, flashers, horns and the fact the vehicle is safe to operate on the Texas roads), but alas I didn’t want to be driving a TX registered car in CA for any period of time. Therefore, I’ve decided to put this amazing FJ up for sale and let another owner get to actually experience the vehicle on a daily basis. While I know this has been a lengthy description & history, let me end by telling any prospective buyer all the remaining things I would do to the vehicle if I kept it. As with any older car (even one that is essentially modern, yet restored a decade ago), there are some minor issues that I personally would eventually address. Nothing is a “show-stopper” for me to use this vehicle as-is right now and as I’ve said, it’s been as reliable as any modern SUV in my collection. But if I kept it, I would do the following: Install the rear jump-seats and reupholster front/rear to match. The jump-seats are included in the purchase, but there are currently speakers installed where the rear seats should mount. Also, there is a tear on the driver seat upholster (on surface - does not go all the way through material) that I would correct when I matched the rear seats.Install front cabin insulation & carpet. While I appreciate the utility of the spayed liner bed, I had no visions of using this FJ as a hard-core off-roader. 99% of the time it would be used for street & highway driving and trips to the beach. Therefore, I would prefer to “soften” up the front cabin by installing the insulation and carpet.Install 33” BFG’s. The 31’s are a little too small for my liking, there’s plenty of clearance and eventually (say 10K miles) the 31’s are going to need replacement. I would also probably eventually swap out the wheels for a more classic, traditional FJ steel wheel & hubcap.There are 2 small rust spots (quarter & silver dollar in size) on the driver rear quarter. The spots were disclosed to me when I bought it and they have not grown any bigger. It would be a simple and small sand/re-spray job to correct those couple of minor visual blemishes. Not a huge deal, but I would clean it up just the same.Vintage AC system needs recharging & power – all components installed per the Vintage AC system, but currently not running. AC is never a big deal for my beach cruiser classics, but since this is a modern AC system, I would spend some time charging it as it’s obviously not some vintage system that would require a bunch of parts & work to get functional again. No doubt sitting for multiple years and not being used has taken its toll on the coolant in the system. If you’re interested, please call me directly at 714.756.0993 to discuss. Based on research, I’ve seen trucks of this caliber go for the low to mid $60K range. I've seen trucks that are not in as good condition as this go in the low 50s... as an investment, these are appreciating... they are not making any more of them. I've heard back from a couple of brokers that the current market value for a truck in this condition is currently in the mid $40k range... as a result, I am lowering my "buy it now" price and will entertain offers in the low $40k range. I've seen trucks asking more and offering less... AC but no cab insulation, painted drive shafts, rust peeking out of seams in rhino liner undercoating etc... look closely. http://s921.photobucket.com/user/multi-mediacorp/library/79%20FJ40%20Land%20Cruiser?sort=3&page=1 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 This matching numbers 1979 truck was restored in 1995 by Cool Cruisers of Texas (note the stainless steel fasteners) and shipped to a Lake vacation Cabin in Minnesota where it was lightly used for grocery/pizza runs in the summer (11,000 miles in 16 years) and kept in a heated garage the rest of the time. It currently resides in a garage and is taken out regularly (weather permitting, of course). What you will not find on this truck is any Rhino Liner to hide repairs… You won’t find “strengthening” diamondplate aluminum panels anywhere on this truck… the floors are solid, the fenders are not cut out for flares, the panels are strong and complete. This is not a Concourse show restoration, it’s just a good honest vehicle. Barely broken in with under 67K original miles, it runs better and better as I have made little improvements. When I got it, it had been sitting for most of each year in a heated garage. The leaf springs were stiff, so I applied liquid wrench for a few months intermittently. When I greased the steering knuckles and shackles, and u-joints in the front & rear drive shafts, excess grease would squeeze out. I applied it along the leaf springs… as the months went by, they really began to travel smoothly and since then, the new shocks have begun to break in… the combination of new rubber underneath including bushings, motor & transmission mounts, exhaust mounts and P rated new tires along with the sound proofing/insulation that accompanied the AC installation have transformed it into the smoothest quietest most civilized riding Land Cruiser I have ever ridden in & the VP of the local LandKrewser chapter agrees… he couldn’t believe it when I let him drive. It starts immediately cold or warmed up and runs smooth & straight… It will do over 70 on the highway steering with one finger… not that I do it often, but occasionally to blow the carbon out… over 60 mph the wind noise gets distracting… it can cruise calm & cool at 60-65 all day long. It shifts really smoothly and the 4wd hi and low also work as they should. I had looked for several years for a 79 in good condition. I like that year for the electronic ignition (still retro convertible to points), the highway friendly gearing, and the ambulance doors and larger interior space with the external gas tank. I have seen so many editions of the 40 with rust in the usual spots & some all over, even in the glove compartment. What I was finding were either rusted out or hacked up with V-8 engines or at least most of the engine bay stripped bare. This one is the most complete version I had ever seen, with all the vacuum lines, smog equipment, and even the thermostatically controlled carburetor cooling fan to prevent vapor lock. I knew what I had when I found this. I have enjoyed several years of projects and challenges with this truck, but I am now facing a set of family issues, so I have to prioritize. This has been my “fun car” and a daily fair weather driver… I won’t take it out if rain is even threatening… after all the work I’ve done, I don’t want to compromise the value of this antique, but with the rain we get in Louisiana, this is not a practical daily driver. What’s been done since I’ve been curator of this well-preserved artifact?AIR CONDITIONING & INSULATION – AC Blows Really Cold... but would not be effective without the heat and sound insulation, Two layers of foil sandwich insulation along with Mass Loaded Vinyl (1lb per sq’) added from top of interior firewall to floor and hump to under seats and all the way to the back. The insulation layers are Not glued, but remain removable in case of moisture. A major project combining parts from two kits. Forward of the firewall are the compressor and custom bracket by Vintage Air along with their dryer, condenser and hoses. From the firewall back the system is mated with the Hurricane unit by Old Air. The Vintage Air unit would have taken up most of the passenger knee room as opposed to the Old Air unit which has almost the exact size and shape of the original heater unit it replaced. The unit also provides heating and windshield defrost. To retain a stock look, the vent from the original heating unit has been retrofitted to become the center vent for the new system (replacing the radio which moved to the former ashtray home with a custom 3/8” aluminum bezel to match glove-box & speedo bezel.NEW RADIATOR (brass not brittle aluminum) has Four Cores to boost cooling supporting the AC installation along with a NEW WATER PUMP and new OEM hoses. Sound System – new “Retro Toyota” radio with line-in for playing from MP3 or Iphone sources. Four speakers added. Rear Speakers installed with clamps to roll bar (no holes drilled) and wired to back through body panel frame for clean installation. With the all the added soundproofing, it has a great sound. 12 volt (cigarette lighter) accessory outlet wired directly to battery with its own in-line independent fuse. LED Dash Light with switch added (incredibly helpful amenity), along with all lights in instrument cluster and dome light exchanged with LEDs. Hand Grips have been added above both doors to assist entry. Flip out rear vent window hardware added to driver's side to match passenger side. Center console fabricated from 50cal ammo box provides the perfect elbow height as opposed to the Tuffy console which is too tall. It does have the lock and cupholders from Tuffy worked into the design with the addition of a front tray for sunglasses, wallet, keys etc. Speaking of Keys: It came with one key that works the ignition, doors, and gas fill door. I got two of the last three blanks from the Toyota dealer and had them made, so now there is one to use, one to leave at home, and one to hide somewhere in the frame for emergencies. In addition, the key for the ambulance doors was broken off in the lock. I replaced the ambulance door cylinder and added a Tuffy lock to the custom center security console (each with two keys). NEW RUBBER – motor mounts, transmission mounts, exhaust mounts, and suspension bushings (with greasable pins added to both hanging points on all four springs), new wiper blades, & new weatherstripping. All new Vacuum lines in engine compartment from carburetor, smog control, and various sensors. New Radiator hoses. New Steering tie rod boots to keep grease in place. New Shifter boots. Steering wheel centered. New U-bolts were done when the Leveling Shim by CCOT was added. These shims are made to compensate for inherent left side sag from the weight reduction when the steering gear shifted from the original designs which had left hand drive. It sits squarely now. NEW Bilstein SHOCKS with appropriate travel for front & rear moderate lift. New Geolander tires P265/75 R15 (P rated for a really smooth ride). Every inch of the body and undercarriage has been gone over inside and out. Where any hint of rust was evident it was treated with 3part rust converter-encapsulater-preventative by Eastman. It was even sprayed with extension nozzles into every crevice of the frame, body, and door panels where brushes couldn’t reach. There is virtually no rust evident on this truck. DOORS – each door taken apart and preemptively treated with 3part rust converter-encapsulater-preventative by Eastman. New window track felt channel inserts, new window felt/metal (bottom of window opening), Regulators & locks were lubricated and adjusted. Even the door open stop rattle was eliminated by the addition of rubber grommet. The doors are the only place on the truck where adhesive Dynamat panels were added to deaden their sound. They don’t ring when closing and it gives them a quiet solid feel when driving. Roof Channel Gutter – stripped and treated with 3part rust converter-encapsulater-preventative by Eastman, then re-caulked & painted. Roof attachment points (normally seen as dobs of caulk) were fitted with custom “buttons” hollowed out disks glued over caulk points for cosmetics. Four New Brake master cylinders. Towing hitch added along with wiring & plug for trailer lights. It now holds a convenient step for entry. Bypass/Overflow hose added between transmission and transfer case to accommodate overflow should one area get more fluid while running and keep transfer case from running low on gear oil. Fresh gear oil added to both differentials. Engine oil is a mix of Mobil One 15-50 and one quart per four Mobil One V-Twin oil added to provide proper balance of zinc for solid lifter/cam/rocker coating. (the engine runs so much smoother and quieter since using this combo). New Spark Plug Ignition wires along with plugs and OEM distributor cap & rotor and fuel and Air Filters were replaced prior to an engine timing reset. New Windshield and Gasket (standing by in case they’re needed… the original is very slightly pitted, but I haven’t changed it out as I’m sure as soon as I did, that’s when I’d catch a rock or something.) I have a small collection of new and used parts that will come with the truck. Windshield Washer – new hose run from glove compartment up through side of windshield frame to nozzle… the washer works fine… how many FJ40 owners can say that? Custom carpeted plywood bed cover with hold-downs & cargo net was added to protect the pristine truck bed. Toyota Land Cruiser illustrated Repair Manual almost an inch and a half thick with extra diagrams. Reproduction owner's manual in the glovebox.
