For people who have learned from experience to buy all the integrity they can get.” Backgrounder: Originally designed by Bruno Sacco, the Mercedes-Benz W126 is a series of flagship vehicles manufactured by the German automotive brand Mercedes Benz. Premiering in September 1979 as the successor to the earlier W116 line, the W126 was the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz flagship to officially bear the S-Class name referring to Sonderklasse or "special class." The W126 was initially offered in straight-6, V8, and turbo diesel sedan models. In September 1981, 2-door coupe versions (C126) of the W126 were introduced. The W126 S-Class debuted a new Mercedes-Benz design style which was subsequently used on other vehicles in the company's lineup. The W126 line also introduced many Mercedes-Benz safety innovations, including the first seatbelt pretensioners. By 1986-87, the United States economy was doing extremely well, and consumers were spending money freely on luxury items. 1986 was a record sales year for virtually all luxury carmakers foreign and domestic, including Mercedes. Honda’s Acura division was started up with great success, and Lincoln and Cadillac found the most new buyers. Since economy themes in advertising had become passé and power and modern looks had been established, it was time to focus on competitors. But very discreetly. It’s interesting to note how advertisements in the late 1980s took on a more genteel upscale feel to match the good times. Luxury cars were a much easier sell now, so far less data and text was deemed necessary. Traditional large American luxury cars were targeted. The subtle advertising theme was to establish an S-class as a better choice than “overbearing” luxury cars saddled with “bulk and ostentation”. Copywriters may have had Honda’s upstart Acura luxury division in mind when creating the advertising text for 1987. Although Acuras had only been on the market for one year, their success could not be ignored. Readers were reminded of Mercedes-Benz’s 100-year heritage, tradition and pedigree which Acura (or any other Japanese manufacturer) could not possibly match. Tiny 1-liter-engine cars and motorcycles were Honda’s heritage – not very fitting for a luxury brand to tout. Mercedes ads began to feature more close-up pictures of their classic hood ornaments and grilles than ever. “You drive the automobile that pioneered ABS and SRS. I am selling this because I purchased a 2010 Prius, not for the gas savings (I drive about 12,500 miles a year), but rather for the technology. I am the second owner of this Maxima. The vehicle was originally purchased from Empire Nissan, in Redlands, CA, in February, 2002, with all service previous to my purchase being performed at a Nissan dealership. I purchased this from a doctor in Redlands, CA, in January, 2007, when it had 82,357 miles on it. He sold it because his son was going to do a mission overseas for two years, so he was going to use his son's car, since he didn't need to have three cars. I have used premium (91 octane) fuel exclusively since the day of first purchase (see above for pictures of the first and last receipts), and have had this maintained by a Nissan mechanic who lives here in Carlsbad. I have all service and parts receipts, which I can show, but not give you for privacy reasons. The owners manual, navigation manual, warranty booklet, 2 key, 2 key FOBs, and other documentation, other than the window sticker, is included. The car has 180,564 miles on it as of November 8th, which is the last date that I used it for daily driving. I work from my house, and this is an average of 12,540 miles a year since purchase. I have filled it up (and fully topped it off) with premium fuel. The car also has heated rearview mirrors, and a heated steering wheel, but I swapped the steering wheel for a non-heated version, due to wear on the top heating element. These don't show up very well in daylight, but they are much brighter and whiter than the stock bulbs. - "Spray" vs "squirt windshield washers (from the gen 6 Maxima) and hybrid/more aerodynamic wiper blades - Matching full-size 17" alloy rim, with Yokohama Avid V4S spare tire in trunk, vs small, heavy, and ineffective doughnut emergency use tire - HeatShield windshield cover - Cargo net This car is my third Maxima (first was a white 1990, then a white 1996, then this silver 2002): safe, with front and side airbags, can go fast if you want it to, gets great gas mileage when you drive it appropriately, and flexible: it can be a very comfortable 5 person sedan, or with the rear seats down, can fit a piece of 10 foot PVC pipe from Home Depot. On the freeway from Irvine to Carlsbad I can get between 30 and 33 miles per gallon at less than 65mph, and if you exclusively drive on the freeway on a full tank it's around 27 to 29. In the city, around 22 to 23. See above for a picture of my MPG, over 32, on a drive from San Clemente to Oceanside, and below for my fuelly data, for all fuel-ups. The majority of my trips are around town, and I didn't distinguish between city and freeway driving: http://www.fuelly.com/car/nissan/maxima/2002/wea/281573 This car was *never* in an accident, and has some normal rock chips in the front bumper and hood, a scratch on the top front bumper, above the license plate, a scuff on the passenger bumper bottom side, some scuffs on the rear bumper, and a small scratch on the right passenger side, by the fuel door/rear fender. And yes, you can see that I even cleaned inside the fuel door. All of these scratches were caused by the original owner, not me. The interior is in great condition, with just one crack on the left side of the driver seat, and loose stitching on the front right side of the passenger seat. Nobody ever sat in the rear seats, and there is a little tear in the rubber weather sealing on the left rear passenger door compartment.  All windows are original Nissan windows, shown in the pictures above. Typical for this model, three of the navigation/air conditioning buttons are loose and/or broken off, so when I rarely (never) use the air conditioning, I change the settings with a pin, or an Apple iPhone SIM ejector tool. There are cosmetic "titanium" covers over the door handles, door arm rest, and center console, and some of the covering is worn off on the driver door, and there are some scratches on the rear left interior passenger door handle cover. Cosmetically I'd say the car is in "very good" condition, and mechanically probably "good" condition. It is over 12 years old, after all. I have the clean title in hand, smog check passed on November 8th, with smog check details uploaded to the smog check verification web site on November 9th, 2014. Recent service history: - Coil 4 and throttle plate were replaced in September 2014, at 178k miles. - Brakes were done in December 2013, at 169k miles. - Tires were changed by Big O in October 2013, at 168k miles. - Radiator was replaced in April, 2013, at 162k miles. - Both HID bulbs were replaced in March, 2013, at 161k miles. - Clutch was replaced in February 2013, at 160k miles. - Oil was always changed at Big O in Carlsbad, with the next service scheduled in December, at 182,350 miles. See below for more details. The Volkswagen Passat W8 is a very rare and hard to find vehicle. The W8 engine is a 4.0L DOHC 8-Cylinder producing 270 Horsepower. It's called a W8 instead of a V8 because the engine's concept design of having two V4-cylinder engines put together, sharing the same crankshaft, thus the concept of the "w". The angles of the piston locations gives the engine enough horizontal opposition to make it a very balanced, smooth, vibration-free and quiet engine, coupled with VW's attention to detail of final fit, finish & insulation makes this one quiet, tight & elegant vehicle, but don’t let that fool you, with it's power, it's a wolf in sheep's clothing! The W8 engine is the predecessor and design concept behind the Bugatti Veyron, which is an 8.0L W12 engine. Incredibly, the W8 is also a very efficient engine design with optimum performance that, despite having all the weight of the All Wheel Drive system in the Passat, it still gets excellent fuel economy, not only at it’s published 18-22 MPG, but I often track up to 24mpg while cruising along at 70 MPH on the flat highways through the valley. How often do you get more economy than the published MPG?? A word about how the W8 compares to newer Passats ('07 and up) with the newer 6 cylinder engine that produces around the same horsepower: Although I haven't driven one of the new Passats, I am not new to the concept of driving cars that come in both 6 and 8 cylinder models, even with relatively similar engine displacement size but a significant difference in power between the 6 and 8 cylinder engines. Two references I will make are the 90's Ford F-150 and the 90's Taurus LX and SHO. The 1995 F-150 Inline 6 cylinder was a 4.9L displacement while the smaller V8 was a 5.0L, nearly the same size, yet the 8 cylinder produced more horsepower and torque, which had more off the line launch as well as passing at higher speeds. It was also night and day difference between the 1997 Ford Taurus LX with the 3.0L DOHC 6 cylinder than the Taurus SHO with the 3.4L DOHC small V-8. The bottom line is the more cylinders you have creating combustion at the same time, the greater power you are going to produce, more explosive power (torque) you have off the line, the greater passing ability you will have at the higher speeds (horsepower), and the power is a more consistent power all the way through the RPM range and with a good deal of power happening from a lower RPM, which means more stronger, consistent power all the way through, not just at the top of the RPM gauge. And an engine that works less harder, lasts longer. So the new passat 6cyl engines can't out perform the W8 engine. This is all in my honest opinion of course. A somewhat interesting story, I actually bought the exact same vehicle the day before, a GLX V6 model, a Gray 2003 Passat 4-motion AWD Wagon but with black interior (which to me isn’t as nice as the Gray). When I got home I found this Passat W8, which I was excited at the time that there was even one available to buy. I traveled the next day and paid a couple $K more for the W8 than I did for the V6 GLX (The appraisal difference between models at the time). I had never even driven one before. But when I drove the W8, I was in love. It really is an amazing vehicle and it was the 1st vehicle to impress me, and I had driven a wide variety of cars in life by then. I’ve been in love with it ever since. I sold the GLX the following week. From the cockpit forward, it feels and handles like a sports car, but has not only all the versatility of a wagon, it flies below the radar being a wagon too. ;-) Maneuverability is amazing, especially because this one has the optional Sport Package (minus the factory BBS, I gave them to the buyer of the GLX and swapped the rims, both being 17's). I've also upgraded the tires to z-rated for extra improved handling. The tires are near new as seen in the pics. Prior to me buying the Passat, it was (and continues to be) a 1-owner California car. It was serviced regularly at the local VW dealership (Fladeboe VW in Irvine, CA) religiously as also indicated by the CARFAX report. The vehicle hasn't given me any troubles. Since I have owned it, all routine oil changes have been performed and I only run synthetic motor oil in it. It's a little pricey to do so, but it protects your investment. Admittedly, I'm not very good at keeping service records and such but as the car still drives like brand new, it will be easy to ascertain that it has been well cared for. Recently, I had Big-O do a wheel/tire/suspension check on the Passat and a couple of cracked bushings had been identified. I had decided at that time, that it was just as expensive to replace the whole control arms as just replacing the rubber bushings individually, so I decided to have the entire control arms replaced. Parts and Labor was going to run about $1,600 after replacing a few control arms, I decided to replace the entire 12-piece front suspension by my mechanic for the same price. I didn't skimp on parts either, I bought Myle parts (factory/heavy-duty grade) for the suspension. The rear suspension is good. Other than that, the Passat has needed nothing. I’m sad to see my baby go, but I am raising capital for buying some real estate so it’s time to let someone else enjoy her for the rest of her life. It’s not uncommon to find one of these available for sale with over 200k miles and it still feels tight and responsive in the engine as well as still being solid in the body/suspension. I live and work from home and have more than one vehicle to drive so the miles are very low. It’s basically twice the car as it has half the mileage as most other W8’s of it’s age. The vehicle is in near mint condition and in far better than normal condition than any other car of this year/mileage. The shine and reflection in the paint is very clear and shiny, like new. There are only a tiny door ding or two and you certainly can't tell from the photos. I took pictures of the car today and I was a little disappointed with one aspect of the current state of the exterior paint, it has some white paint "fall-out" on it that I had never really noticed before, I don't know if it happened recently or I just never noticed it, etc. So today after the photo shoot, I took the car to a detail shop, and with good elbow grease, they will restore the car to near new condition, as their initial trial on a section had shown it can achieve. I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow (Friday). I wanted to get the 10-day listing started today however, so the pics today are limited. After the detail is completed, I will get more photos and re-post them, so stay tuned. They are also doing a headlight restoration, so the headlights although look pretty good now, they will look fabulous tomorrow, so stay tuned for the new pics. The interior is near flawless, seats look perfect. The only thing on the interior is the ash tray in the back of the center console isn’t opening, it's wedged shut, looks like a spring keeps it from opening. It doesn't bother me, who lets anyone smoke in their car these days? Not me. By the way, it’s been smoke-free and pet free by me and I’m pretty sure from the previous owner as the ashtrays and lighter were never used nor did it ever have a smell when I bought it. It still smells like a brand new car practically. The buyer of this car is getting a wonderful car, originally over $40k in 2003 cars/money, same car today would be over $50k.
