1982 Jeep Scrambler already has a bunch of show trophies and magazine appearances to its credit. Even better, it has genuine rock-crawling credentials and probably drives even better than it looks no matter what the road looks like. The Scrambler is an unusual version of the legendary CJ, offering more interior space and a longer wheelbase, which pays big dividends in terms of ride quality. It also makes a big statement when you paint it Go-Mango Orange with blue and purple flames. YJ Wrangler fenders and cut-down doors were installed during the build, but the integration is seamless so you hardly even notice. The hood was punched full of louvers to help keep the warmed-over small block cool, and fat fender flares are mandatory when you’re running large-by-huge rubber. The owner is also a highly skilled paint and body man, so the finish is not only beautifully done, but it was maintained in show condition despite frequent off-road forays. Heavy-duty front and rear bumpers are mandatory on a rig like this, and the finish quality throughout is extremely impressive. Kudos to the guy for actually hitting the trails with this one! Inside, it’s actually quite comfortable and it’s clear that this one was built to drive. Modern bucket seats were fitted up front, along with a TJ folding rear bench for true 4-passenger capacity. A custom roll cage made from 2-inch DOM tubing was grafted onto the original Scrambler piece, and neatly integrates the spare tire carrier. The original dash still carries factory gauges, but there are a lot of additions to help when the going gets tough, including a tach and auxiliary gauges, as well as an AM/FM/CD stereo with glovebox-mounted amplifier. Thanks to the Scrambler’s extended wheelbase, there’s also plenty of storage out back. There’s also a full black convertible top that makes this beast even somewhat practical if you want to drive it every day—who could resist? The engine is a 1977-vintage Chevy 350 fitted with Holley Pro-Jection fuel injection system, which is ideal for off-roading because it doesn’t seem to mind extreme angles. A 3-inch stainless exhaust with Magnaflow muffler was fabricated and doesn’t compromise ground clearance. The suspension is highly modified, including a Rubicon Express YJ spring-over kit, Rancho RS-9000 shocks, all adding up to an additional 8-inches of ground clearance. The transmission is an SM465 4-speed manual feeding a Dana 44 up front and a modified Dana 60 out back, all packed with 4.10 gears and Detroit Locker differentials. The frame itself is stock, but every single system was upgraded with an eye towards unbeatable reliability when the going gets tough. Even the brakes were upgraded to discs, which shed mud and water better than drums. Bright chrome wheels enhance the flashy looks and are fitted with gigantic 37x12.50-15 Goodyear Wranglers

Cruiser is extremely clean & gets tons of compliments when I have it out of the garage. I had it repainted the original Tan color that is so popular with these cruisers. I would give the paint a 9 out of 10. I stuck with the original emblems as much as possible - the hood, grill & side emblems are original - the rear emblems are replacements. The tail lights have been replaced. I was able to keep the original front turn signals & parking light lenses. The body was removed from the frame and the underside of the cab was painted with a rubberized undercoating. The chassis was cleaned separately, acid washed then painted with rust-inhibitor paint – NO rust to be found anywhere. There's one small area in the paint that didn't get enough attention @ the Left Rear Corner (pictured). That corner has some light body work that wasn’t prepped perfectly. The rest of the body is straight and clean.

It's obvious from every angle that this is a custom build made to traverse territories that have never seen a vehicle before. More than just the massive ground clearance, the entire front fender section has been re-tubbed to carry enough suspension travel to overcome boulders. The rear end has even less fender restriction, so all four wheels can handle separate elevations with ease. Still not convinced? Just look at the tires. The Goodyear MT/R units are reinforced with Kevlar, so they are literally designed for bulletproof off-road performance. Still, there is some beauty in this beast. The parts that you scrape the most have been hit with an easily replaceable black paint, and as an added bonus, it makes for a nice complement to the electric blue body with Tomahawk graphic. And yes, that is a Ramsey 9500 winch mounted to the front end. Inside, everything has been customized so the driver is in complete control. There's a full set of AutoMeter gauges that provides information on the monster motor (we'll get into all those details shortly). While this is the ultimate off-road machine, there have not been any compromises. For example, the fuel cell does not intrude on the full standard Wrangler interior. Even the convertible top still fits over the full custom roll cage. Plus, within the center console is a booming Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo that's connected to enough amplified speakers to wake the whole campsite. If that wasn't enough, you can do your own broadcasting with the onboard CB and PA system.

Lots of cash went into this ultra-clean Jeep and you can see it everywhere you look. You know about black vehicles and how much attention they need before the paint goes on, and this one received it. It's one of the straightest, cleanest Jeeps we've ever featured. Not perfect, mind you, but nicer than these off-roaders usually are and clearly someone did it for love, not money. The usual Jeep trouble spots above the rear wheel arches and by the tailgate are quite good and the two-stage urethane paint looks like it should be on a much more expensive vehicle. Rubber fender extensions offer protection from the oversized tires and a "Renegade" decal package adds contrast to the otherwise all-black Jeep. Other new gear includes a chrome grille and windshield hinges, typical asymmetric side mirrors, and bright rocker panels that protect the bodywork from debris on the trail. There's also a trailer hitch for utility and that rear-mounted spare just looks butch. Bare-bones is the word inside, where fresh seat covers have been wrapped around the front buckets and rear bench. The high-back seats look sporty, especially with the roll bar hovering above them, and they're comfortable enough for a long day of fun. The floors are protected by spray-in bedliner material, so you don't have to worry about getting it dirty; just hose it out when you get home. A GM tilt steering column wears a fat steering wheel that is easy to grab and keep pointed in the right direction, even with the ground fighting you, and the gauges are all big, clear, and easy to read in the rough. A 4-speed manual transmission makes it easy to find the right gear for slogging through the rough stuff, and the 2-speed transfer case gives you enough torque to power through just about an obstacle. For entertainment, there's also an AM/FM/iPod stereo system and the heater is powerful enough to roast a Thanksgiving turkey.
