It entered the production lineup as a high-performance, fuel-injected luxury convertible within the Star Chief line in the 1957 model year and was loaded with every conceivable option as standard equipment. The very first production Bonneville was a spectacular, chrome-laden convertible. When the 1957 Bonneville was introduced on January 11, 1957, it was the fastest Pontiac ever produced. Zero-to-sixty took just 8.1 seconds. Appropriately, the car was named after the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the sight of early automobile contests and numerous assaults on the world land-speed record runs. The $5,782 sticker price was correspondingly high to its low 0- to 60-mph time. For the Cadillac-like price, Bonneville buyers received a Cadillac-like level of standard equipment that included Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, Wonderbar AM radio, underseat heater, defroster, tri-blade wheel covers, Autronic-Eye automatic headlight dimmer, padded dash, full leather interior; power top, eight-way seat, windows, steering, brakes and antenna. This magnificent machine offered only two options; a Continental kit and air conditioning. This rare machine is presented in Kenya Ivory and Fontaine Blue with a blue top and a blue and white leather interior. Additional features include a Kleenex dispenser, factory clock and whitewall tires. Pontiac wrapped up all of their best in this incomparable package: outside, matchless styling – inside, spacious and gracious comforts. Released as only one-to-a-dealer, Bonneville availability was limited to only 630 production examples. Power was supplied in abundance by a 347-cid V-8 engine with Rochester mechanical fuel injection pumping out 315 horsepower. Pontiac never released a specific power rating for this engine, simply stating that its output was “in excess of 300 horsepower.” The mechanical fuel injection system was a continuous-flow unit engineered by Harold Barr and Zora Arkus-Duntov. It is considered by some to be a better system than the Chevrolet version, with combined rather than separate manifold heater and pipes, plus a better fuel meter placement. This exceptional unit was bolted to the respected Hydra-Matic automatic transmission and power was delivered to a live rear axle sprung with semi-elliptical leaf springs. Independent front suspension with coil springs and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes contributed to a luxurious ride. Styling for the Bonneville was under the direction of division chief stylist Paul Gillan. It represented a second facelift of the design that was introduced for 1955. At the front were newly featured body color hooded headlight rims, illuminated front fender ornaments and a bumper/grille ensemble with a series of vertical slots for a “waterfall” effect that was drawn by future GM styling chief Irv Rybicki. Behind the front wheels, fender hash marks added to the illusion of speed. For the first time in a decade, Pontiac taillights were a shape other than circular; elliptical lenses fit into massive chrome bezels under fins that angled back and up. A sculptured chrome wraparound bumper with integrated dual exhaust outlets finished off the rear styling treatment. Body sides featured rocket silhouette chrome spear trim that ran the full length of the car and provided two-tone paint accents. Stylized “Fuel Injection” badging above the front wheel arches and centered on the trunklid above the bumper boldly announced the level of performance to be delivered. The equally stylish “Bonneville” badging appeared above the spears on the rear fenders.

This car started out as a 1977 Pontiac 2-door sedan. I decided to customize the car – the car has absolutely NO rust. The top was cut off, the windshield was chopped 4.5”and the body was channeled over the frame 1.5”. The frame was also boxed from the front firewall clear to the rear axle to stiffen it. Car has a rebuilt factory 6.6 liter 400 with a Crane after-market camshaft, Pontiac performer aluminum in-take, Mickey Thompson aluminum valve covers, new rings, rod bearings, main bearings, lifters, etc. (totally rebuilt). The transmission is a 350 turbo 3-speed automatic. The motor and dashboard have been painted turquoise and cleared with urethane with purple pearl added. The prior owner ordered this car from the factory for his wife with a 6.6 TransAm 400. The bumpers were removed and were replaced with custom made rolled-pans (front and rear). The grill was replaced with a 1955 Ford truck grill (1.5 ton). Other custom features include electric doors, electric trunk lid (moves up and down electrically), electric gas door, TransAm shaker scoop, custom mirrors molded into the doors, Fiero bucket seats, B&M ratchet shifter covered by a 1973 Cutlass console. There’s a hand-built Carson style top made from thin-wall electrical conduit (lightweight). The car has several dents from being in storage – one on the front driver’s side fender, one on the rear passenger quarter panel (both easily fixable). I have all the chrome parts, fender skirts, etc. for the car as well (some of which are pictured in the ad). It currently needs driver’s side rear taillight lens. I have a replacement for the passenger side that goes with the car (not mounted). The car has always been stored indoors and again does NOT have rust. Great over-winter project to emerge in the Spring as a super-cool one-off custom. I’ve done all the work on the car so feel free to call for more details or to see it. Up for auction is a 1980 Pontiac Bonneville 2 door that I have owned for a few years ,I planned to give it a really nice paint job and bring it back to like new condition , but I have lost storage and need to sell a few cars. I bought this car with the mileage stated as original 31,000 but it could not be verified, it was running rough and I had the carburetor rebuilt, the man rebuilding the carburetor asked me how many miles were on it ,I told him it was either 31,000 or 131,000 he told me it was definitely 31,000 because the carburetor was factory original and in such great condition, he also told me there was a factory defect in the carburetor and it must have run badly its whole life, probably the reason it had such low miles. This car now starts right up , its quiet and super smooth running ,it shifts perfectly, suspension is as tight as a new car ,and you can drive it anywhere .The body is in need of restoration ,paint is cracking and looks old, has some dings and scrapes , bumpers are pit free and very shiny ,chrome trim is very nice ,tires are in excellent condition, interior is above average, original GM mats, and owners manual . The car is located in long Island, New York. Please feel free to ask any questions , or come see it / drive it if you want .I have a truck and transport trailer and can offer delivery to local destinations and neighboring states for a discounted rate! my name is Andrew and my number is 516-398-1964 , thanks for looking !
