This car also features a correct flathead V8, a bunch of period accessories, and a period driving experience that proves why these cars have been so popular for 65 years. You can see why the customizers gravitated to the early post-war Mercs, because they look chopped even in stock form. In fact, you should probably get ready for the questions and comments about the roof chop on this car. The truth is, it's 100% factory sheetmetal that's in excellent condition. The first all-new Mercury since 1942, it has a very modern look with a nicely integrated front end, a dramatic sweep along the fender lines, and a semi-fastback profile that makes it look fast just sitting still. The burgundy paint is a period-perfect choice that emphasizes the Mercury's grown-up mission, a substantial car that rightfully commands a premium. The doors fit well and use very cool pull handles, the hood sits flush, and everything lines up well from front to rear. There are a few signs of use and age, but the restoration only has about 3000 miles on it, so for the most part it's quite clean and straight. Details like the familiar electric razor grille, the stainless side trim, and gorgeous wrap-around bumpers have all been fully (and expensively) restored for a very upscale presence. The handsome cloth interior offers room for everyone with period-appropriate fabrics, simple door panels, and contrasting dark red carpets. For the most part, it's completely stock save for a set of classic Auto Meter gauges in place of the originals, mostly because the electrical system has been converted to 12 volts, and you really have to look closely to see the change. The lovely steering wheel features a delicate horn ring and cool Mercury emblem and there's a column-mounted shifter for the 3-speed manual transmission. That 12 volt conversion also permits the use of a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the center of the dash but nothing was cut or modified to make it fit, don't worry. This Mercury also includes a period "swamp cooler" accessory in the passenger's side window, seat belts, windshield visor, and a back seat big enough for real-sized humans. The trunk is fully finished with black carpets and includes a matching full-sized spare tire. Don't worry, this Mercury still packs a correct 255 cubic inch V8 which was recently rebuilt by a noted flathead mechanic. Given how easily it starts and how well it runs, he clearly knew his stuff. It's been nicely detailed, too, with proper red paint on the block, a 2-barrel carburetor up top, and factory exhaust manifolds. You'll quickly spot the 12-volt alternator and aluminum radiator, both of which improve reliability and make it a joy to drive, but the rest is quite stock so the car's original personality is totally intact. It's backed by a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive, so it's a wonderful highway cruiser, and everything from the suspension to the brakes is 1950-spec so it drives like it should. Dual exhaust pipes with glasspack-style mufflers give it just the right flathead exhaust note. Steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps and bias-ply wide whites finish the look in the correct style. There are plenty of chopped '49 Mercurys out there, but when was the last time you saw a virtually untouched original? This is a very desirable car that's fully sorted and ready to cruise. With a timeless triple black color combination, an appealing upscale interior, and a thrifty drivetrain, it's a hobby car you can enjoy without guilt. The idea of the small car isn't a new one, and even upscale Mercury was getting in on the act with the Comet. It offers styling cues taken from the full-sized machines sitting next to it in the showroom, but thanks to compact proportions, it was easy to drive and remarkably quick, even when equipped with a six-cylinder engine. This one shows good straight bodywork thanks to a lifetime in the south, and dressing it up in black makes it look bigger and more upscale than you'd expect. Dramatically carved sheetmetal was all-new in 1965, making it look more like its big brothers and less like an economy car, and most folks won't recognize it when they first see it. Chrome and trim are quite good, and even on the budget-oriented Comet, there's quite a bit of it, including the big bumpers and ornate grille up front. The stainless trim on the front fenders and ornate fluted taillight lenses give the Comet a lot of visual pizzazz that make it look more expensive than it is. The attractive black interior is another way in which the Comet looks like it should cost way more than it does. One look at the tasteful black vinyl and cloth upholstery with its square stitching instantly reminds you of the other more expensive cars in the Mercury lineup, and that's completely on purpose. The cloth inserts make the interior comfortable even on warm days with the top down, and while it's not totally correct, it certainly looks right. Matching door panels are stylish for a basic car, and we're guessing they were restored when the seats were upgraded. The instrument panel is a handsome and functional design that includes wood appliques for warmth a full set of gauges that are remarkably complete for such an affordable machine. The original AM radio is in the center of the dash, although it's probably due for an upgrade, and the trunk comes complete with a full-sized spare and jack assembly. A luxurious black canvas convertible top was recently installed, and includes a crystal clear rear window and matching black boot. Ford's trusty 200 cubic inch inline fits neatly with the Comet's economy-based mission. It appears to be the original engine, but in 1965, Ford Motor Company wasn't stamping numbers on blocks, so it's impossible to say. It delivers bright performance in the lightweight Mercury and you'll recall that the 1965 Mustang was based on this same platform. Bright red paint on the valve cover and air cleaner makes the machinery stand out against the satin black engine bay, and while it's not detailed for show, it does have a factory look that helps give it camouflage. It starts easily and has a bit of a gruff voice thanks to a single exhaust system. With highway-friendly 3.20 gears out back, the smooth six pulls the car around with confidence and the Dual Range 3-speed automatic transmission is a nice travel partner. Brightly polished Weld wheels carry staggered 225/60/15 front and 235/60/15 rear radials that give it an aggressive stance. Unusual yet eminently practical for today's times, this Comet is a great entry-level hobby car that won't cost you much now or down the road. Nostalgia being what it is, this cool hardtop fairly accurately re-creates the early '60s drag race experience in a slightly more user-friendly form that you can actually drive and enjoy on the street today. With a frame-off built and more than $40,000 in receipts, this wasn't a half-hearted project but rather a labor of love. If you were there, you will instantly recognize the look and while you don't see many Mercury Gassers, it certainly looks good dressed for combat. The body was smoothed and straightened, with many of the details being removed, including the door handles, side trim, and hood scoop/ornament. Nevertheless, it's still easy to spot its Mercury DNA, from the faired-in headlights to the distinctive shape of the rear fender and quarter panels, to the taillights, which are some of the most beautiful of the era. The paint has a good shine, almost too good to be a race car, but that's kind of the point with this car. There's not much chrome, and even the rear bumper has been painted to give it an industrial-strength look. Really, the only thing missing is some door art and a few larger sponsor decals, and suddenly it's 1962 all over again. At first glance, you'd think this is race car throughout, but then you notice just how beautifully crafted the interior really is. Sure, there are race-grade bucket seats with 5-point harnesses and a roll cage, but there's also a beautifully stitched headliner, gorgeous door panels that look straight out of the '50s, and a bright red dashboard with plenty of chrome trim. A custom billet aluminum insert hoses a full array of gauges and there's a monster tach up top where it'll do the most good. As a nod to civility, there's also a center console with cup holders and an AM/FM/CD stereo system with remote control. The windows are Lexan and can be completely removed and the trick shifter manages a PowerGlide 2-speed automatic transmission, which has long been the transmission of choice for drag racers. The trunk isn't for storage any longer, now housing a custom fuel cell and a pair of auxiliary jerry cans, just in case. The original Y-block just wouldn't hold up to the stresses of the track, so there's a more familiar 283 cubic inch Chevy V8 in its place. With an .030 overbore, 9:1 compression, high output heads, and an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, it's plenty potent but also docile enough to be friendly on the street. It runs on pump gas and definitely has a race-ready look with heavy-duty ignition wires and chrome open-element air cleaner. Red paint on the block is a nod to its FoMoCo history, but that's the only thing Blue Oval under the hood. The aforementioned PowerGlide feeds what might be the original 3.59-geared rear end, which hangs on leaf springs augmented with traction bars. Speedway Motors supplied the straight axle kit and there's a Vega steering box which works well. Disc brakes, custom fender well headers and side pipes, and modern shocks add up to a car that's traditional but still usable. Weld skinnies and fat Torque Thrusts have that old-school look and carry suitable big-n-little radials to complete the look. This car isn't for everyone, we know that. But if you were there and respect the era, this car will take you back without forcing you to go full race. Fast, rare, and affordable? Maybe it's time to have a closer look at the Comet. The Comet's lines have aged rather well, with the new-fastback profile accentuating the long hood and short deck theme that created the Mustang. Repainted a few years ago in basic black, it has a clean, purposeful look and you'll likely get more than a few folks asking for more information when you stop for gas. Is it perfect? No, but go find another one that's led an easy life like this one has. It hasn't been modified and it didn't require major surgery to get back into shape, and while there are a few signs of use, the overall look is pretty darned nice. We like the white pinstripe that highlights the gentle curve of the fenders and they didn't shave or delete any of the original trim. There's a very clean, straight grille up front, correct 'Comet' script on the sail panels, and blacked-out bumpers for an updated look. Believe us, this car will definitely get its share of second glances. The interior is in excellent condition and if we had to guess, we'd say that the seat covers and carpets are new, but everything else may very well be original. It's basic, yes, but that's part of the appeal with cars like this, and a few minor upgrades make a big difference. There's a fat wood-rimmed steering wheel, for example, which adds a sporty look without changing the overall vibe. You also get a pair of round dials that are reminiscent of the Mustang's instrument panel and the markings are still clear and easy to read. Remarkably, the original AM radio remains in the dash, and in 1973, that was standard fare in the Comet, along with a heater and defroster and little else. The back seat is in excellent condition and is roomy enough for real-sized adults and there's a nice, big trunk that looks to be in excellent order. Pop the hood and you'll see where the real money was spent: a 302 cubic inch V8, better known as the 5.0, and it gives this Comet some real performance credentials. There are plenty of upgrades from its humble 1973 specifications, including a 4-barrel carburetor, so it's potent without being fussy. It's nicely detailed under the hood, too, including the finned valve covers and matching air cleaner, as well as bright Ford Blue paint on the block, giving it a very correct look. You'll also find power steering on the options list, making this Comet easy to handle even with the fat rubber on the ground. It's backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission and original 8-inch rear end, so the components are rugged enough to put up with some fun, and the cackling Flowmaster dual exhaust definitely has that Ford 5.0 performance sound. The floors show off years in a warm climate and the late-model Mustang wheels look exactly right on this vintage Comet, especially wearing right-sized 225/50/17 Firestone radials all around. You won't see one of these at every cruise-in and the low curb weight and strong-running V8 make it a ton of fun to drive. Get into the game with something that'll stand out and doesn't cost a fortune. Today, this 1963 Mercury Marauder is a very rare piece of early muscle, packing a 390 cubic inch V8, an awesome color combination, and a just enough anonymity to stay under the radar in the future. The look is almost familiar and you should probably expect folks to think it's a Galaxie when they first see this hardtop. But upon closer inspection they'll be treated to a very rare car with a lot of unique details that make it stand out. The grille is a little more dressed-up than the Galaxie's plain stamped piece, and the trim that outlines the fenders and quarters gives it an upscale look overall. The paint is gorgeous Black Cherry, which is very close to the car's original code X Heritage Burgundy, and it gives it suitable gravitas for such a heavy hitter. It was refinished a few years ago and is showing a bit of age, but nothing that a professional buff couldn't erase, and with that black padded roof, it has a very formal look that belies the performance underneath. The chrome is a combination of original pieces and restored bits, and we especially like the 'Marauder' script on the front fenders, just enough warning to the guy paying attention in the next lane. The handsome two-tone tan interior is a fantastic contrast to the burgundy paint and really gives it an expensive look inside. The bench seats have obviously been reupholstered but they look quite authentic and the door panels and carpets were replaced at the same time. The headliner and dash might be original, and that will tell you about how nice this car really is, and the dash definitely looks a lot more expensive than the base Galaxie setup, especially with the silver-faced gauges that monitor all the engine's vitals. An under-dash A/C unit seems fitting in the upscale Merc and remains fully functional with good old R12 refrigerant inside. The original AM radio remains in the dash and it, too, works properly along with the wipers and all the gauges. Nice, right? The trunk, of course, is gigantic and carries a correct mat and a full-sized spare tire assembly way up there in the front. The Marauder came with Ford's heavy-hitting 390 cubic inch V8, and even when topped by a 2-barrel carburetor, it's a fantastic performer. There's torque at any speed and the big V8 never notices the A/C cranking away. It's fully rebuilt and beautifully detailed under the hood, with a correct Ford Gold paint job on the big air cleaner and valve covers. Authentic fittings, hoses, and clamps have been used throughout and it runs as well as it looks. The exhaust system is rather throaty, using straight pipes and resonators out back, but the rest of the chassis looks quite stock, from the 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission to the 9-inch rear end with 3.00 gears inside. It's nice to see a heavy-hitter like this that hasn't been extensively modified (heck, there's still a 2-barrel on it!), which suggests that it has always been treated like something special. And on a brute like this, dog dish hubcaps, painted wheels, and 235/75/15 blackwall tires give it the ultimate predatory look. Rarer than a Galaxie and just as fast, this Mercury Marauder is the thinking man's alternative and a great piece of FoMoCo muscle car history. With the same long nose, short deck styling as the Mustang, but in a slightly larger, more luxurious package, this 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 convertible offers grown-up performance for people who like a little luxury with their muscle. Of course, perks like a strong-running V8, a great color combination, and an automatic transmission only help the Cougar's case, creating a sophisticated muscle car that you can drive every day. Handsomely finished in handsome burgundy metallic paint, the Cougar's lines are clean and instantly recognizable. From the finned front grille and hidden headlights to the kick-up behind the doors, it looks powerful yet refined. It was restored a few years ago, so it's not a trailer queen anymore, but the color really works well on the stylish Cougar and only adds to the upscale look. The sheetmetal underneath is in great shape, particularly the dramatic sweeping body line that stretches from nose to tail. They didn't add any stripes or wings or scoops, which gives this car a grown-up look that should appeal to people whose fascination with boy racer looks has come and gone, which is perfectly OK. Instead of style over substance you get a car that looks great from any angle and fits in just about anywhere. All the chrome and trim has been polished up, proper Cougar badges affixed to the quarters, and the full-width taillight is in superb condition, which is a good thing because finding replacements can be tough. The bright red interior was restored fairly recently and it still looks awesome today. The seats and door panels have been restored and use correct materials and patterns, and new carpets were obviously installed not too long ago. The center console and dash pad are probably original and their condition suggests a car that has always been well-maintained and didn't spend all its life baking in the hot sun. The gauges appear to be original, so the lenses are a little cloudy, but we love the rocker switches along the top of the center stack. This car does have factory A/C, although the system has been disconnected but it's complete if you want to get it back into shape. The original AM/FM stereo radio remains in the dash, and for 1970 that was state-of-the-art in in-car entertainment. There's a black power convertible top that remains in good shape and it stows neatly under a matching red boot. Even the trunk is nicely finished with a reproduction mat and a full-sized spare tire. Power for the big cat comes from a 351 cubic inch V8, which is a perfect fit in the Cougar's engine bay and gives the car great performance without the big block weight. It's quite stock, from the original air cleaner to the large A/C compressor to the Ford Blue engine paint, and while it's not quite detailed for show, it does have a very honest look. The 351's smooth torque means that the Cougar is never caught flat-footed, making it a great choice here. Underneath, the chassis is clean and well-maintained, with a great-sounding dual exhaust system whose tips are just barely visible beneath the rear valence, again emphasizing the Cougar's subtle muscularity. The power steering system has been recently and comprehensively rebuilt and the C4 3-speed automatic transmission makes for easy cruising. An unusual set of 14-inch gray wheel covers really set off the burgundy bodywork, and the 215/70/14 radials completely fill the wheel wells. For those of us who have reached a certain age, a little luxury with your performance is definitely a good thing, and this Cougar delivers. This one is nicely restored and still flathead powered, making it the ideal choice for the guy who loves Mercury and doesn't want a lead sled. Now that you've seen an unaltered Mercury, it's hard to imagine making any improvements to the way this car looks. It's bigger than you expect, with smooth, flowing lines that were probably remarkable in 1951. It's been repainted at some point, although we don't know when, but thanks to great care over the years, it still looks great. Perfect? No. But there's a wonderful soft shine that only time can create and on a car that's as rare as this one, it would be a mistake to try to improve it. Instead, admire the super straight sheetmetal, the panel alignment that suggests that the car has never been hit or wrecked, and paint that accurately captures the original Luxor Maroon. Plenty of chrome and stainless trim is a highlight of any '50s car, but the Mercury's smooth grille, wonderfully ornate bumpers, and intricate taillights are some of the period's best. There's a reason these parts end up on so many custom cars. The black and white interior is stylish, clean, and in excellent condition. Again, the car emphasizes details over big shows of style, and the clean, simple upholstery doesn't distract you from the things that really matter. Check out the lower dashboard that mirrors the front grille and the neatly arrayed instruments that put everything right in front of the driver. The steering wheel uses a delicate chrome horn ring and this Merc features power windows which were still a novelty in 1951. There's also an AM radio in the dash, although it's not currently functional, and a column shifter for the Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission, which is fully functional. The trunk is finished with a correct rubber mat and matching spare wheel and tire assembly and overhead there's a tan convertible top that looks great up or down. Mercurys received a slightly larger version of Ford's venerable flathead, with this one displacing 255 cubic inches. That turquoise engine enamel is correct for 1951 and the little details, including hose clamps and air cleaner, all help with the accurate look. It runs beautifully, idling so smoothly that it's almost imperceptible and there's a great flathead soundtrack at speed. There's no sign of flathead fever thanks to a giant radiator and it still uses a generator to make the electricity. The 2-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission shifts well and it cruises easily at modern highway speeds without seeming to work very hard. It's so stock that it even has a brand new single exhaust system with just the right sound. The underside is largely unrestored but you can see how clean this car really is and recent tube shocks add to the smooth ride for which Mercurys were famous. Steel wheels with hubcaps and a set of 215/75/15 wide whitewall radials provide a period look with updated handling. Rare as well as beautiful, this 1951 Mercury convertible is an incredible find that runs every bit as great as it looks. View Large Images ? ? Vehicle Information VIN: 1100044 Stock: 2174-ATL Mileage: 6 Color: Green Trans: Manual Engine: MPG: Drivetrain: Description Wow, everything about this 1947 Mercury woody wagon is remarkable. Hailing from New Mexico, where it spent most of its early life in the service of the National Forest Service, its the result of a 15-year restoration that has turned it into one of the most attractive Woodies on the market. With superlative highway manners complements of a Columbia 2-speed and that wonderful flathead V8 purr, this is a car that satisfies on every level. You can imagine how expensive the restoration was, given that the wood is all-new, replaced at a cost of $21,000 just for the raw materials! Then there was fitting, finishing, and final assembly, making this car better than new in almost every conceivable way. The lovely sage green paint is a great contrast to the vivid ash and mahogany bodywork, with the steel staying in the background to let the wood do all the talking. The post-war Mercs were pretty darned good-looking cars with restrained styling and a bit more flash than their Ford counterparts, and theyre arguably the best-driving flatheads ever built. The bodywork was refinished to the same standards, with good fit, a wonderful gloss on the fenders, and a vinyl roof insert that looks like new. All the chrome on the car was restored, and there is a lot of it, and the car includes rare accessories like the bumper ends and spare tire cover. The tan leatherette interior still features all three rows of seats, a rather rare find on an old wagon, since early owners often removed the rear bench for additional storage space. All the seats were reupholstered using correct materials and someone did a marvelous job of woodgraining the dashboard, making it almost a match for the mahogany inner door panels. Correct stainless screws, original hardware, and a beautifully re-cast steering wheel make this a very comfortable place to spend some time, like your favorite cabin in the woods. The gauges were restored with bright faces and a very upscale look (this is a Mercury, after all), and theres an AM radio in the dash and a heater underneath, both desirable options in 1947. All four doors fit well, regardless of the weather (ask a woody owner about humidity), and theres a bit of storage space in back with a tailgate whose lights swivel to always face rearward. The 239 cubic inch flathead V8 really needs no introduction, and in this neat little woody it provides a wonderful punch and a great soundtrack. Thanks to the Columbia 2-speed rear end, its an effortless cruiser at modern highway speeds, but still feels quick around town and it doesnt mind carrying a full complement of passengers. The engine is nicely detailed if not 100% correct, but the demerits are quite minor, like the parts store battery. It still uses a correct oil-bath air cleaner, and the radiator hoses are proper reproductions that wont sag. It still runs off of six volts so you get the full experience and no worries about careless workmanship. The 3-speed manual transmission shifts easily and even though Ford was still using buggy springs and rigid axles at both ends, the ride is surprisingly plush with the wagon body on top. The chassis is nicely finished and quite correct and the color-matched steel wheels have shiny hubcaps, trim rings, and fresh whitewall tires. This is a really easy car to fall in love with, combining the romance of the woody with the performance of the Ford flathead. With no stories, its worth every penny of the asking price. Call today! But what's even more remarkable is that this beautiful chopped show-stopper is a 4-door sedan! Yep, a lead sled that's also practical, how cool is that? It's easy to miss those extra doors in the back because the profile is so right. The five-inch top chop was expertly done and blends so seamlessly with the bodywork that you'd need a stock car next to it to see where all the surgery was performed. The classic low, wide look is 100% intact, regardless of how many doors you get, and they seem to have gone the extra mile to camouflage the rear doors as simply quarter windows. Very cool! Of course finish quality is exemplary, with ultra-smooth bodywork that probably took hundreds of hours to get to this condition and two-stage purple urethane paint that simply glows in the sunlight. The more notable mods include the aforementioned top chop plus a DeSoto grille, 1953 Buick side trim, and taillights expertly molded into the rear bumper for a very, very cool effect. The rear fenders were also lengthened and the fender skirts are, of course, a lead sled must-have along with the lake pipes on the side that are beautifully integrated into the bodywork. The door handles are shaved, the hood is nosed and decked, and there's a 1-piece windshield that definitely helps with the smoothie look. Very, very impressive overall. The two-tone leather interior is equally stunning and more than lives up to the standards set by the exquisite bodywork. Sculpted bucket seats anchor a fully custom-stitched passenger compartment that uses pleats, dramatic styling, and a few modern touches to really drive home the point. A custom-fabricated center console houses the shifter, power window switches, and A/C controls, blending seamlessly into the dramatic twin-cockpit dashboard. Beautiful gauges from Classic Instruments look like they're straight out of the Art Deco era and that nickel-plated Mercury head shifter knob is the coolest way to change gears we've ever seen. The back seat is equally well finished and actually usable by real-world passengers and the suicide-style door openings offer great accessibility without the headaches (literally) normally associated with a chopped top. The trunk is fully finished to match with nicely integrated panels that hide the inner workings of the Ride Tech air suspension and stereo system. You can forget old-tech power under the hood, as this cool custom features modern LS1 horsepower, complete with fuel injection for reliability and performance. Fully chromed, polished, and detailed, the all-aluminum V8 lives happily under the Mercury's pointed hood and looks awesome sporting custom coil covers with Mercury emblems on their faces. There's a heck of a lot of custom metalwork under the hood to make it look spectacular and everything is finished just as beautifully as the exterior. A 4L60E 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission makes it a superlative high-speed cruiser and there's a lot of time and effort wrapped up in the chassis to make it functional as well as ultra-low for looks. The suspension offers A-arms up front and a 10-bolt axle out back and there's a disc brake at all four corners, so this Merc has some rather surprising moves that are wholly unexpected from a lead sled. Wide whites and modified hubcaps with bullets give it the perfect finishing '50s look. My mind boggles when I try to imagine how much this car cost to build. Not quite twice as expensive because of twice the number of doors, but surely far more than the asking price. With just 739 miles on the build, this incredible Merc is ready to show at any level.
