This 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante was custom ordered as a factory “one off” finished in Rolls Royce Aegean Blue, with custom leather interior, in white with blue accents. While I can't say if any of the other 1997 cars were Special ordered, but This car has a special Plate mounted on the driver's side of the engine that reads part number: "SPE 7174 Issue 01" Serial Number: "JM/TWR 04753 IMI Part Number D2551-4A Issue E." I believe that this I.D plate denotes that this car was the first and possibly only car to be special ordered that that year. This would add substantially to the cars value, as well as a nice piece of providence to show your friends, and to display while the car is being judged at car shows. All of the materials used in fashioning the interior are of the finest English leather, wool carpets, and matched wood, all rendered in exquisitely tasteful fashion. The car, being special-ordered, is the only one of the 140 that were imported into the U.S. in 1997, finished in this color and trim, to my knowledge. In the back you will find demi-backed seats to accommodate the kids, luggage, even the family dog. This beauty is a beast, with a bulletproof DOHC 24 valve 3,239-cc inline six, hand built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing at the Racing Sport facility at Kidling, Oxford, England. (the cars were engineered and built at the factory at Bloxham, Oxfordshire. The engine is basically a de-tuned racing motor, ( According to what I have read) coupled with an Eaton Supercharger producing 335 BHP and 361-pound feet of torque. This combination allows this car to make 60 MPH in six seconds or less, power delivery a seamless rush that continues all the way to almost 170 MPH. You have your choice of normal or sport setting for the transmission located next to the electric seat switches.I became the owner of this beautiful car, after admiring it for many years at the shows I attended. It always won something, such as 1st Place Aston Martin: San Diego British Car day, 2007, 1st Place Aston Martin: English Motors at Fairbrook Farms, 2009, 1st place Aston Martin: English Motors at Fairbrook Farms, 2010. If you have an interest in sharing this rare beauty at shows, you will be greeted by an endless crowd of car lovers, many with Aston Martin stories of their own. I knew the owner from my membership in The Austin Healey Club of Southern California, and when he decided to sell the car, I purchased it straight away. While driving the car, he had burst a water hose and was towed to Aston Martin of Newport Beach. The hose was replaced, along with the water pump, the radiator flushed and refilled, and sent on its way.The friend I would later purchase the car from seemed to think he could hear a low growling from the engine bay, and took it to his regular mechanic, and the head pulled to look for the source of the noise. After a week of checking everything, the mechanic could find nothing wrong with the engine at all. No blown head gasket, (which I have retained for your inspection), no evidence of any damage whatsoever. The head had already been sent out for inspection to a local engine shop but the answer was the same; after stripping and checking the head for any cracks, unevenness between cylinders, or anything unusual, nothing. Even the valve seals showed nominal wear. everything checked out fine. The Culprit? the supercharger. It had become gradually noisier, and due to its design, which starts to show up at about 30,000mi. On these cars, it had worn the internal needle valve, causing the growling. We would find out later that small pieces in the supercharger spinning at high speed, along with the worn Needle Valve, was the source of the noise. before you ask why the mechanic did not pull the supercharger belt to eliminate it as a possible cause of the noise, he did, but spinning the supercharger with an air gun, was not the same as the engine being under load. At this point, doing a full valve job and replacing the supercharger would be a no brainer; But what to do about the engine? With just over 50,000 miles on the clock, and no damage whatsoever evident, what to do? I made the decision in the interest of performance, to rebuild the entire top end of the engine, and have a full valve job performed. I used all genuine Aston Martin Parts, and I spared no expense getting it right. I could have just had the head reinstalled and replaced the supercharger and gone on my way, but since the head was already off, and I wanted to maintain the level of performance I was used to from this car, the decision to rebuild the top end was easy. Not inexpensive, but just the right thing to do. This is why I prefer to buy a classic or exotic car from someone in a car club, because to us, these are more than just another exotic or special interest car; they are a part of the past, that we have the privilege of driving and taking to car shows, to show to Aston Martin lovers as well as the younger generations. After the engine was done, using all genuine Aston Martin parts, the cooling system was flushed, both thermostats replaced, along with all needed hoses and belts. The car ran even better than ever, so now I began to research how best to replace the supercharger. A new one would have the same problem as the old one, so the decision was made to send the unit to Jon Bond Performance for a complete rebuild, (jonbondperformance.com) using a larger, stronger main needle valve, genuine Aston Martin parts and a host of other proprietary parts, and services developed in-house. Not only would insure this rebuild offer better performance& longevity, but actually reduce the heat produced by the supercharger by approx. 30%, which also translates into a resultant drop in engine running temp. If you have ever been involved in a project like this, one thing leads to another, so I had a local shop, Raging Bull, redo the suspension as needed, and used British Performance to replace the newly rebuilt supercharger, and do the final tune up, and reset all codes and download all new firmware to the system. The car was run through California's rigorous smog certification process, and passed with flying colors, even given California’s stringent smog enforcement. The gentleman I purchased the car from has always had the car detailed every month, and kept in a garage for storage, I took the car to my detailer who preps cars for shows, and had the paint cleaned and buffed, and the interior cleaned to as new condition as possible. Looking at the photographs, you will see that due to the depth and quality of the paintwork, the car glows in the sun, and mirrors the reflections of passing trees & the sky above the hood. Although I am selling the car to pay off medical bills from Bone Cancer, I still made the decision to bring this car up to as new condition as possible, so the next owner could enjoy it the same way I have. The car comes complete with excellent copies of the two bound shop manuals and the parts manual that Aston Martin provides with all of these cars. If you are looking at one of these cars that does not come with them, they are can be expensive, and hard to replace. Aside from the fact that these books are also absolutely essential for your reference as well for your mechanic, They are full of excellent information available nowhere else besides the factory or dealerships and will guide you for any future maintenance. Ian Cullen, who designed the DB7, along with Keith Helfet, styled the gorgeous body. Ian Cullen had been head of the styling department of Ghia in Turin, before working with Aston Martin. Tools and books are included, and the car even comes with an umbrella from Aston Martin, something they provide to this day.
