Even though the Mustang has never been an exotic car, it is an icon and easily one of the most immediately recognizable classics. The Mustang brought about an explosive start to the Pony Car class and is a pillar of American automotive lore. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang Convertible. This Mustang is a very nice looker or "20 footer". The exterior sports a recent, decent quality repaint in the correct Wimbledon white. While not a concours show winning quality, it is definitely appealing and local show worthy. The body is very straight, only a few minor dings and paint chips are present. There is some evidence of body work over the wheel arches but no obvious signs of significant damage, panel repair or replacement, or evidence of accident repair. The body also appears to be rust free as well as the floor pans and undercarriage. The most significant blemishes are at the lower edge of the left front fender where it attaches to the front lower valance and the rear left valance where it meets the rear quarter has some small dents in it. There is also some minimal overspray in various places throughout the body. The chrome and trim are all in fair, presentable original condition. There are some small dings in the bumpers and the door handles and trim show signs of patina and or peeling. The Mustang's stance and appearance has been upgraded with a set of aftermarket, original equipment style, 14X5 styled steel rims wrapped in Michelin Symmetry P195/75 R14 Radial tires. The Mustang also has 289 badging attached to the front fenders. All of the glass, the lights and lenses, and the plastic rear window are in good shape. There are no cracks, no major scratches or pits, or significant discoloration or fading. The convertible top is in newer condition and has no tears, rips, stains, or any other blemishes. It has a nice cover or parade boot that snaps along the edges and gives the car a nice clean look with the top retracted. It seals well and opens and closes without binding. The power top system could use some adjustment or repair as one needs to assist the top while the system is operating in both opening and closing. The interior is neat and clean with no major stains or odors. It appears to be "in like" original condition and aside from some minimal wear on the driver's seat, some fading in the carpet, a crack in the dash pad, and some very minor cosmetic blemishes, is in great shape. The most significant issues with the interior are the two rear quarter windows. While they are installed and intact, they are off track and will not roll up. The crank mechanisms are in place and operational. The handle for the driver's side does not have a set screw and can be removed. Most of the options and systems function as designed. There are a few things that could use some adjustments or repairs and will be detailed out later in this description. Mechanically, this Pony is in good drivable shape. There are a few fluid leaks seemingly from the power steering system and a small coolant leak from the thermostat housing area. There is also an audible noise believed to be play in the universal joint or joints. There are no odd noises, smoke, and no out of the ordinary vibrations from the engine. There is some doubt as to the engine's originality to this car. The car, by V.I.N. code, is supposed to be equipped with a 260 V8. While this is certainly a period correct V8 (5 bolt transmission mount) the intake and air cleaner both say 289. There is also an alternator installed in place of the generator. The car handles as well as it should considering the technology and it drives and steers well. The alignment seems to be dead on and there is no pull, looseness, or wandering. The recently replaced dual exhaust system gives the car a soothing rumble while idling and driving. The undercarriage is relatively clean and appears to be rust free. The electrical system appears to be in good shape. There are only a handful of items that do not work properly. The light for the rear license plate is not present, the horn does not work, the windshield washer sprayers are installed but no other components are present, the wiper blades will need replacement, the heating system will not blow out of the defrost vents although the rest of the system works properly, the cigarette lighter insert and or socket does not work and a unique little quirk with the dash illumination. The exterior lighting all works properly with the exception of the left front turn indicator. Most likely a burned out bulb. The unique quirk is while the high beams are in use, the dash illumination works properly although the high beam indicator does not. While using the low beam lights, the dash illumination stops working. The turn light indicator and oil pressure light are also not functioning. (Oil sender is disconnected on engine) There are some minor cosmetic issues such as a cloudy rear view mirror, and after market Jensen speakers installed on the doors to accompany the aftermarket "Mustang" am/fm cassette stereo. Other than those items mentioned, this is a solid functional Mustang. With so many companies providing parts, this car can be a joy to own, easy to maintain, and fun operate for years to come. *Note, the door tag has been painted over. While we are fairly confident we interpreted the numbers correctly, there may be an error. Production Information Original list price: $2,614 (base price)Number produced: 28,833 The History In 1961, Lee Iacocca, vice president and general manager of Ford Division, had a vision of a sporting car he wanted to produce. The car would seat four people, have bucket seats, a floor shifter, be no more than 180 inches long, weigh less than 2500 pounds and sell for less than $2500. Out of this vision the Mustang was born. The Mustang project was approved in September of 1962 and the first car rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964. Because the car entered the market in mid-year it is sometimes called a 1964 ½ model, though it was never officially referred to as such by Ford Motor Company. In order to keep production costs down, much of the car’s drivetrain and inner structure was borrowed from the Ford Falcon. The magic of the Mustang was the wide variety of different interior, exterior, and drivetrain options that allowed owners to order a car as plain, fancy, economical, or fast as desired. The car was heavily advertised at the time of its release and was Ad provided by ClassicCars.com

The car market is changing rapidly, and perhaps the most surprising thing is that formerly common, affordable cars are now hot collectors\' items and Mustangs like this 1965 coupe are all former bargain-basement dwellers that are no longer second-class citizens, they\'re automotive superstars. Someone has obviously invested big money in this sleek, black hardtop and it includes all the features you\'d want from your favorite pony car. It\'s hard to make black look this good without a lot of time and a lot of money, and that\'s obviously what happened here. Taking one straight, original car, it was refinished using a lot of hand labor to block the sheetmetal until it was straight enough to calibrate NASA\'s instruments, then shot with a few coats of the best black urethane you can buy. The gaps are so even and tight that they virtually disappear against the black body, and aside from the vivid red pinstripes (a theme used throughout the car) it is almost devoid of ornamentation so it looks quite sinister. No modifications aside from deleting the badges mean that it has a classic look, and with GT fog lamps up front, it\'s a bit aggressive, too. Nice chrome bumper sparkle against the dark finish, along with the stainless window surrounds that appear to be in good original condition. If you want attention, driving this car will do it. You\'ll find black buckets inside, which were standard equipment on all Mustangs. The seat covers, carpets, and headliner are new and an aftermarket center console was added along the way. It\'s nice to see they went with the standard seats, which have a sporty, understated look that often gets overshadowed by the showy Pony interior, but it works just fine in this coupe. Aftermarket A/C was added, and while it has a look that\'s similar to the original under-dash unit, it\'s more effective with secondary vents in the outboard positions. A woodgrained steering wheel frames the stock gauges, and again, you\'ll find a red pinstripe that adds just a splash of color to liven things up. An AM/FM radio looks quite correct up high in the dash and the trunk is detailed with a recent reproduction mat. No early Mustang is complete without a 289 under the hood, and the snarky small block that powers this pony has a few upgrades that make it a blast on the street. Edelbrock dress-up parts and a 4-barrel carburetor give it period-perfect looks, while an MSD ignition system ensures that the fuel is fully burned. The A/C system\'s installation is ultra-clean and there\'s plenty of evidence of recent maintenance. The engine is painted correct early-1965 black and starts with a great small block bark from the twin Flowmaster mufflers; there\'s nothing else that sounds like it. A C4 3-speed automatic is hardly a demerit thanks to quick reflexes and relaxed cruising capabilities and you\'re certainly not going to hurt the rear end by having a little fun on the street. You can see that it\'s led an easy life someplace away from snow and salt just by looking underneath, which is always a relief when you\'re talking unibody Mustangs. Styled steel wheels look great and have also been treated to a red pinstripe to tie the entire car together quite nicely, and they wear 205/70/14 BFG radials all around. You can probably count on Mustangs of this caliber getting more expensive in the future, but right now, you can have this one for less than the cost of resurrecting a project car. Call today! America\'s favorite car rendered in a stunning color combination, this 1965 Ford Mustang convertible is just the right choice for cruising this summer. With some recent restoration work, including a new interior, it\'s an eye-catching car, there\'s no doubt about that, and with a thrifty six-cylinder engine, it\'s also a hobby car that makes perfect sense with gas prices on the rise. Dressing a Mustang in black is like putting it in a tuxedo and it looks fantastic. Even though it was done a while ago, the straight sheetmetal and modern materials give it a high-gloss look that definitely attracts attention. The traditional Mustang shape will absolutely never go out of style, and keeping it all original is an important part of that. That means no stripes or scoops or wings. Fortunately, this handsome convertible is just the way it looked back in 1965, with the exception of an authorized accessory trunk rack, which is a brand new chrome reproduction piece. The doors fit well, the hood sits flush, and even the troublesome trunk lid lines up nicely with the fender end caps. The bright chrome pieces sparkle against the inky black paint, particularly the bumpers which are recently polished and the inserts in the quarter panels that add a racy look to this otherwise low-profile pony. Bright red upholstery in a black car is my personal favorite color combination and it makes for a dazzling presentation in this drop-top Mustang. New seat covers, carpets, door panels, and dash cover make it look quite fresh inside, and the simple yet flashy design elements make it insanely appealing. A color-matched steering wheel frames the original instruments, which remain in extremely good condition. Both front seats are supportive and comfortable and show minimal signs of use, while the rear bench looks pretty much as-new, including the color-matched seat belts (with 3-point belts for front seat passengers). A factory AM radio remains in the dash, although an upgrade to a modern unit would be an easy and worthwhile project if you\'re going to go cruising. A power convertible top is another welcome option, especially on a 6-cylinder car, and it includes a split folding glass rear window, a trick borrowed from later Mustangs and quite welcome here. The trunk is finished with a correct reproduction mat and spare tire with matching cover. Yes, I know, everyone wants a Mustang with a V8, but please, if you like the way this car looks, come try the 200 cubic inch six on for size. It delivers a totally different motoring experience that\'s altogether in line with the Mustang\'s personality. Nicely finished with Ford Blue paint on the block and air cleaner, it doesn\'t deviate significantly from the factory specs. The nice thing about a six-cylinder car is that you know it hasn\'t been abused or raced or hacked up by unknown backyard mechanics, and there\'s evidence of an easy life throughout the engine bay. Either way, at this price, you can scoop it up as-is right now, drop in a small block, and still be ahead of the game. Either way you choose to go, there a 3-speed automatic transmission underneath and original rear end with enough gear to get the convertible off the line without being stressful on the highway. It\'s quite original underneath, but in this car\'s case that\'s a good thing because aside from a little crustiness and surface scale, it\'s pretty solid. Correct hubcaps on 195/75/14 whitewall radials give it an authentic look. A neat-looking convertible with the same practicality that made it appealing when it was new. Why bother with a late-model Mustang when you can have this much class for the same price? Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
