Up for sale is my 1971 BMW 2002 in Agave green. This classic round tail sedan is an excellent restoration base. A California car since new, it is free of structural rust. There is notable rot on the trunk lid along the rear molding, some small holes in the spare wheel well, and some holes in the front valence. Some bubbling has developed behind the rear wheel openings, and a spot under the front windshield. I started to take down the bubble spots, and the rust has not penetrated or compromised the sheet metal yet. The rockers, shock towers and underside are exceptionally clean and dry. The right rear corner suffered a tap at some point, and has been hammered out but will need finishing work before paint. It has the desirable street performance modifications, including the 320is 5 spd, LSD and Recaros that are getting harder to find as 320is values climb. I have recently performed a service on the engine (oil & filter, valve adjustment, new carb filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and rotor). I also put new webbing on the Recaro seats. It handles exceptionally well, and drives great. I drive it all around the Bay Area. The car is getting tired however, and could really use a restoration to soldier on. Most importantly of all, the car has extensive documentation from new to now. I have the original dealer order sheet (window sticker), sales invoice, original manuals with dealer service stamps and just about every single receipt for the car since new until now - massive stack. I have log books from 1970 to 1989 (first owner), detailing just about every gas fill up, oil change, and service done to the car. Dealer service invoices, independent garage invoices, part order receipts - this is a serious amount of documentation, above and beyond almost any 2002 I have come across. I am the fourth owner of the car, and a classic BMW enthusiast. The car did have CA blue plates on it, but they were lost when a previous owner put on personalized plates. The car has a clean title and is currently registered. decided to recreate their wildly popular 2002tii? As Performance BMW magazine aptly stated, “This is ground up re-engineering of such a scope that even BMW would be proud.” In the spirit of Rob Dickinson’s Singer Vehicle Design, this BMW was a “Reimagined®” build by an extremely talented SoCal enthusiast/engineer who has been building special cars for years. Of course, he enlisted the help of his brother and several other local BMW enthusiasts affectionately referred to as the Knights of the Roundel Table. Paul Cain has been a well-respected fixture in the U.S. BMW community for over a decade. He has created several cars (for himself) that have been featured countless times in the media. He is one of the co-founders of the Legends of the Autobahn event in Monterey. Paul’s brother, Joe Cain, tends to travel in the shadows but is one of the top fabricators in the area. For years, he worked for one of the top Porsche restoration shops creating amazing concours winning (including Pebble Beach) examples. Finally, Tom Rakestraw (close personal friend, BMW enthusiast, and local architect) was instrumental in the interior design as well as general labor. So, with Paul’s vision, Joe’s skill, and Tom’s help, they set off to take a brainstorm idea of the “Ultimate BMW 2002” from paper to reality. Who knew this endeavor would evolve into over a half-decade of late nights that would empty bank accounts. Paul purchased this BMW in 2000 fresh from restoration by Art Simmons (well known in the vintage BMW restoration circles for some of the top CSL builds). It was a beautiful factory 1972 BMW 2002tii that had been restored to the look of the legendary BMW 2002 turbo. He bought the car primarily for the body. His goal was to build a perfect 50/50 weight balanced 2002 with lots of drivable power and as lightweight as possible. This is no easy task when attempting to build the car with ALL BMW OEM parts in the same vein that the factory would build the car. All the while, the car had to be a great driving street car. Yes, it could (although never has) be a rock star on the track but the focus was to make it something that you comfortably drive anywhere…smiling the entire time. As this project evolved, the commitment to a factory-level quality of build became all-consuming. The level of details would make the likes of Martha Stewart proud. In particular, note the one panoramic view of the full undercarriage. Words don’t adequately describe the level of detail. The quality and fit/finish are at a factory level. This BMW is near flawless. The exterior looks fresh as if it has never turned a wheel on the road. The factory Alpinas wear new Michelins. The interior is equally as stunning. The interior still smells of new leather. Everything looks brand new. Of course, the best part is the way it all works. This is a car person’s driving nirvana. There are no squeaks or rattles. Everything is precise and tight. It feels like an engineered jewel. Surprisingly, this car is extremely drivable on the street. Its power is smooth, intoxicating and goes forever. The steering is light and responsive with excellent feedback. The brakes have a linear grab that will slow things at a tremendous rate without loosing its composure. This is not another hot-rod 2002. This is a well-engineered factory-style build with the end driving experience always on the forefront of goals. As a result of this extraordinary build, it received countless accolades by journalists, peers, and even the president of BMW. Background: "The New Class makes a breakthrough" BMW arrived at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show with the 1500 model. This new model would successfully penetrate the market and re-establish BMW a modern, successful car manufacturer. This excitement allowed the company to become profitable again in 1963. A company that planted it roots in aircraft engines, followed by motorcycles was now a contender in the market for sporty two-door and four-door passenger cars. The 1602 made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966, with design influence by the legendary Giovanni Michelotti. The 02 Class cars began to many what would be termed as the beginning of modern BMW. That quintessential BMW driving experience is deeply engrained in the 02 class cars. Let's continue to the exterior: -PAINT and BODY The paint is VERY nice! It is a 8 out of 10 easily. Shiny, beautiful, Florida paint was recently polished, finished and waxed and looks wonderful. Flaws are minor at best and would represent a car that was well cared for, but enjoyed. It is the original color and was repainted in a perfect match. I can find NO rust on the car. Clean trunk, floors, shock towers, cowl, etc. There is some light surface oxidation on little stone chips/etc underneath in some places and that is it. -WHEELS/TIRES Great shape wheel covers, wheels and tires. Shiny metal on the wheel covers and loads of tread on the tires! -BUMPERS and BRIGHT WORK The bumpers are in wonderful shape! No dents, cracks or issues! Chrome is nice all around the car with only minor flaws. -GLASS/WINDOWS Not to let a pebble defeat this car, the windshield is great shape, with no chips or sandblasting. The door and rear glass is wonderful shape! Clear and clean! Onto the cabin: -SEATS The Saddle Brown seats are in wonderful shape! No splits, no worn spots! Just wonderful and soft! It really is a treat to spend time in these seats. Rear seats are in great shape as well! -DASHBOARD Beautiful shape!! Two very small cracks that were repaired and not very noticeable. Documentation/Tools/Manuals This beauty comes complete with the owner’s manual, BMW scarf and umbrella, toolkit and records! The Experience: This 1602 is a dream to drive. It is tight, very comfortable, very quick, nimble and smooth. It has all the power it had from the factory and then some, and from even a little gas is torquey and responsive. It is so easy to fall in love with this BMW. One twist of the key and she is humming along at idle. Press the gas and she growls! Rowing the gears of this BMW on windy road is about as close to driving nirvana one can get. There were so few cars like the 1602 to drive. I find myself in odd cars all of the time, from the hyper expensive and rare, to the quirky, to the mundane. This 1602 is one of my favorite cars to drive. It has the soul of a racecar and the nuts and bolts of a touring car. It has this great big steering wheel that feels wonderful in your hands and the car allows you to turn into any corner with confidence. I hope you can tell by my long ad that this car is an wonderful and beautiful 1602. This really is a very special car to drive and with the ongoing care within the collection, it is a worry free BMW, ready to be enjoyed for the second half of summer and fall! These coupes are renowned for their driving experience, and this particular example is of the finest examples available; it's ideal for touring and classic car events. They are becoming extremely collectible as well! I just took this beauty for a 50 mile mixed highway and back road trip and she performed flawlessly. It has some E21 turbine wheels and is located in San Diego CA. We just got finished with the car ,it's been in our family for 5 years , We have just fitted new ball joints , new KYB Strut inserts , & a complete Ireland Engineering front suspension bushing kit, she drives nice now!. The engine has unknown mileage ,runs good with a 32/36 Weber Carb, an Ireland Engineering stepped header & a nice muffler system with flex pipe connection.Transmission is a 5 speed which was an easy swap as this was an Automatic car with the larger trans tunnel. The body is completely rust free& has had a proper color change to Verona red, doors ,trunk hood & fenders removed. The car was hit by a motorcycle ( luckily no injuries) but that meant we had to fit a new nose panel ( BMW NOS Tii panel) new pass side fender & a perfect hood. When we stripped the car the condition of the body was outstanding, zero rust. some small holes in the floor from a bad windshield seal were cut out & replaced prior to our redo.We have had a new headliner, rear seat covered & re stuffed along with a one piece carpet kit. Front seats are from a BMW & are really nice I'm 6' 1" & I had them in my car for 4 years , the leather is showing some wear now, The Grant GT wood rim steering wheel is in great shape too.The console has Bosch gauges & a BMW clock fitted below the new stereo head... All new tires are on the BMW 14" wheels. The front spoiler & fiberglass rear bumper are both from Ireland Engineering. Door seals & front & rear windscreen seals were also fitted. In the trunk can be seen how rust free she is , the trunk boards are from Esty. All in all this is a great daily driver that turns heads & gets thumbs up wherever she goes, A true rust free California Car ready for a new home.
