We purchased this Porsche from the 2nd owner who had the car for 2 years, before illness forced sale. This is an original Signal Red 356. We removed all interior, windows, doors, trunk, hood and engine. We then used rust protector, and sound proofing throughout. We were impressed how solid and rust free this 356 is. All floors are original, We didn't find any extensive rust. This is as solid and original 356 as you will find. The car has resided in California its whole life, and has obviously been garaged. We replaced all weatherstripping, we had all original chrome-rechromed, new carpets, recovered front seats, replaced headliner, and much much more. The engine has been rebuilt, the clutch is new, most suspension and bushing parts have been replaced. This is as nice a driving 356 as you will find. Engine purrs, transmission is smooth and correct, suspension is firm, and brakes work as they should. We have all original date stamped wheels that will come with the car. The wheels on the 356 at this time are replicas. The first owner of this car was an engineer at a Aircraft Manufacturer in Los Angeles. He drove this car back and forth to work throughout his career, making sure that all oil changes and so forth were carried out in a timely manor. We strive to product hi quality cars and parts that are rare and unique. We do just about all the work in house here in our fabrication shop located in So. Cal. in the city of Azusa (near Pasadena). 1948 Porsche No.1. Type 356 is the first Porsche named car built.Most Porsche fans have only seen photos and some lucky fans have seen the original in the Porsche Museum or perhaps on very rare occasions when the Factory take it out to shows. This is the car that started it all. Any collector would love to own it, but I'm sure Porsche will never sell it. However you can own this Handbuilt No.1. Tribute car. Take a close look at the details and the 178 HP Subaru engine, yes I said Subaru engine. This is the ultimate sleeper....To my knowledge, this is the only No. Tribute car in the World with a Subaru engine hidden under the bonnet, making it rare to see and a blast to drive! We at Fibersteel did not build this car but we did do all the upgrades that took it to the next level as you will see in these photos below. The company that originally built this replica is now out of business (this is a really tough business). I believe they built only a handful of cars prior to closing. The last ones were built on VW floor pans and may have lacked some quality and performance. Perhaps this is part to reason for the closing... This car is one of the first few made on a 550 Spyder mid engine chassis that is much closer to the original chassis design and way more rigid than the VW pan design. The current owner purchased this car from photos he saw on the internet. When the car was delivered, he drove it around the block, then parked it in the garage and was very upset, to say the least. He then called us because he had been a prior 550 Spyder customer and asked if we could help. We ended up redoing all the mechanicals and interior. Here's a quick list of what we did: Re-fabricated the rear half of the chassis to accommodate the new engine, transmission and exhaust using crossmembers from our original 550 chassis jig.Re-enforced the rear half of the chassis with a welded steel cage and rear shock tower strut bar for strength and rigidity.Converted the rear suspension from torsion bar to adjustable Bilstein coilovers.Upgraded to disc brakes all around and modified the front suspension.Installed Fibersteel 550 pedals and handbrake.Hand fabricated aluminum interior panels. new fuel cell and lots more... Check out the photos of the aluminum interior panels we made. We even removed the old cardboard door panels, fabricated aluminum panels then covered them with blood read leatherette to ensure a perfect fit that will never warp or fray. We added an outer rear view mirror for practical reasons, this is a serious driver. We kept it removable for shows and photo ops. This is the part of the build that I think tops it off. The original engine was a cheap, poorly built VW air cooled engine with no power and no fun!! This engine was so slow the owner asked us to install the exact opposite, the fastest engine with the most reliability, so we put in a 178 hp, normally aspirated Subaru Four Cam engine. At first I thought this was crazy. I thought this was the wrong car to put such a killer engine in. This meant we had to redesign the entire rear half of the chassis, build a new super heavy duty trans-axle, figure out how to install the radiator so it would not be noticeable and not alter the appearance of the car in anyway. Then we had to figure out how to improve the front suspension and add proportioning valves so we could adjust the brake bias since we didn't know for sure what to expect. It was Amazing!! This is one of, if not the fastest car I've ever driven. The motor is 178 HP and the car weighs around 1400 lbs. It's impossible to drive without tapping the throttle and smiling as it pulls you back in your seat. If you try tapping it while turning you are instantly drifting like a kid on a go cart track! I can't explain the feeling of driving this car, I can only say that if I had the money I would buy it for myself.... I will probably build one for myself someday. The jaw dropping results of the Suby install led us to improve the interior in order to fully compliment the uniqueness and rarity of this special car. Aluminum panels were painstakingly made to fit as perfect and precise as possible. I think Porsche would approve. The owner spared no expense to make this a work of Art that you can enjoy looking at, and a Beast that will pull you back in your seat with amazement. This car is really fast!! and a blast to drive. Original options were polaroid windscreen, 1 leatherette headrest and left standard sun visor w vanity mirror and Dunlop B7 tires. The car was originally Heron Grey over the original green interior then back in the late 70s the car was stripped and painted black. The motor was upgraded to a 1962 S motor as well with engine number P 703726, transmission 52003 and everything else were left stock and are number matching. Beautiful July of 57 T1 Sunroof, Kardex correct. Delivered originally in Black with a Red interior, the car is spectacular. Comes with a toolkit. The car was a bare metal restoration on a nice core 57 Sunroof. The floors and longitudinal were replaced after disassembling and blasting the car. The underside was sealed with epoxy primer(black) then undercoated and painted. The matching engine was completely rebuilt, after being balanced and blue printed. After assembly the engine was run in on a dyno and runs perfectly. All engine plating, nuts, bolts and screws are originals, restored. Subcontract work on the engine alone was $10K including a rebuilt distributor, rebushed and rebuilt carburetors . The crank was magna fluxed, turned, and balanced to within 1/2 gram to the turned flywheel. The heads were nice originals to start with having benefited from new guides, seats and valves . The same with the transaxle which was rebuilt by 356 expert Vic Skirmants of Warren MI. New wheel cylinders, drums turned, and brake shoes. The wheels were rechromed, the tires are new radials(Vredestein). New tie rod ends and rebuilt steering box. Aligned, etc, etc.The exterior brightwork benefited from approximately $25K in subcontract work to V Miles including: headlights (Bosch 9/12 script), the 57 only square door handles, all chrome trim and door trim(rechromed), the 1/4 windows, all knobs and switches, turn signals, front and rear, and shine up light. The gauges were redone by Palo Alto Speedometer and are date correct originals. The interior was done by Autos International and fits perfectly. The glass is new with the exception of the original rear window.The horns were rebuilt and are as new. You couldn't restore a core T1 sunroof to this level at this price. It was originally completed with the intention of keeping it, but another rare car has come along so it's time for this gem to have a new owner. their new 900 series (911) sports car. The 356 production was winding down. In 1965, they only built a handful of cabriolets worldwide. However, these final iterations are considered some of the most best driving ones built. With the upgrade of disc brakes, sway bars and a 75hp 1600cc motor, they are extremely driver friendly. This Porsche 356 was built on December 2nd, 1964. It was ordered with the following factory options: Trim Strips Tinted Windshield Chrome Wheel Caps with Crest (all correct date stamped 1964) Black Leather In addition, tasteful period-correct additions were added: Euro Headlights VDM Wood Steering Wheel with Deluxe Horn Ring Correct AM/FM/SW Blaupunkt Radio GT Bucket Seats Finished in Leather by Autos Intl. (available for an additional fee) Includes tilting frames (see pics) The first owner lived in Lemore, CA and kept the car until 1985. Shortly after he purchased the car, he decided to change the color to match his other 356. A complete and correct period color change was performed using factory paint. There is no evidence of the original color. This owner used it as a daily driver for the first 15-years and racked up about 80,000 miles. Then it became a weekend car. The second owner lived in La Cañada, CA and kept the car until 1992. He didn’t drive it much, however he did service it regularly. The third owner lived in Salt Lake City, UT and kept the car until he sold it to the current owner in 2011. Although he only put about 6,000 miles on the car over his 15-year ownership, he began to clean up the car and did some significant work. In 2010, this owner had the engine rebuilt which included the following: rebuilt cylinder heads, reground camshaft, polished crankshaft, replacing piston rings, replacing main bearings, rebuilt carburetors, and replaced most gaskets. Furthermore, he also replaced the soft top as well as restoring the top frame and wood bow. The carpet was also replaced at the same time. Autos Intl supplied all the interior parts. Fresh Koni shocks were installed less than 10,000 miles ago. Also, this owner converted the car to a 12-volt system. The current owner is the 4th owner and purchased the car in 2011. He lives here in Orange County. He used the car for showing and light weekend cruising. He entered it twice in the Newport Beach Concours and placed 2nd (see pic). He also showed it at the 356 Annual Dana Point show. Shortly after purchasing the car, he took it to Willhoit Restorations (one of the most respected Porsche 356 restorers in the country) to help bring the car to the next level. He invested nearly $27,000 on the following services, repairs, and corrections: Euro taillight lenses Full service including oil change/valve adjustment/fuel filter Correct vent window parts to convert to T6 on DS Correct new rubber seals Replaced sun visors and wipers to correct ones Clutch cable Shifter coupler, cup, and rod bushings 17.5mm sway bar kit Axle boots Lap belts Repair inner and outer frame struts as well as front toe board area Dual circuit brake kit Tie rod ends Repair, adjust, and paint steering column as well as restore steering box These are just highlights of what was done…there was a considerable list of minor fixes/repairs. Basically, Willhoit made the car safe and roadworthy as well as making the car more correct. Unfortunately, a year later, the owner had a minor traffic incident. He used this opportunity to further correct issues with the body/underside. After another $50,000, the damage was properly repaired. At this time, some issues due to age and prior/older restoration efforts were found. Therefore, OEM parts that were damaged or needed repair were either replaced with factory original parts or repaired. In the few cases reproduction trim was found, better quality replacement parts were installed and noted. They also addressed some rust issues on the bottom of the car at this time. In total, the current owner invested nearly $77,000 alone with Willhoit Restoration making this a safe, more correct, and wonderful driving 356. Everything inside and out on this Porsche looks very nice. All the gauges including the clock and radio operate properly. The brakes and tires are fresh with 50-75% life remaining. There is a small scratch on the rear plastic window (see photo) and a blemish by the passenger jack point (see photo). Willhoit noted that there was some filler on the body. They corrected some of it, but did not take the car down to the bare metal. Regardless, the paint is very presentable and the panel fit is equally nice. This is a very solid level 2 high level driver quality car. It would be very presentable at your local PCA concours or Cars & Coffee. This 356 drives fantastic. It starts easily and the power is very smooth with no hesitation. Shifting between gears is easy with no grinding or noises. The brakes are very responsive with no pulls and the steering is very light and precise. I could not find any flaws in the car’s driving manners. Everything feels very tight and solid. This would be a wonderful example for vintage touring as well. Included with this Porsche 356 are many extra keys, owner’s manual, most records (dating back to mid 1970’s) full cockpit toneau cover, soft top boot/cover with vinyl case, car cover, correct date stamped spare tire, tool kit, and jack.
