Its original, matching-numbers 326 is under the hood and with that stance it'll be a hit at every show it attends. Clean is the right word to describe this sleek red hardtop. Obviously someone invested big in the bodywork, because it's straight enough to be measured with a micrometer. Some of the trim and the original Lemans badges were shaved and GTO badges installed in their place, but there's no harm in that. The hood scoop adds a dose of Pontiac sportiness and the stacked headlights were one of GM's better designs. The bright red paint is a big improvement over the original Platinum Mist and the sleek hardtop wears it well with a correct black vinyl top as specified on the cowl tag. That paint is beautifully buffed to a high shine which probably took hours and hours of laborious wet sanding. They clearly invested in the chrome, too, since it all shines like new (better than new, most likely) and while experts will note those aren't correct GTO grilles, the vertical strips of trim looks awesome. Unique taillights have a Pontiac look about them and it's nice to see that the car hasn't been over-dressed with accessories, wings, or stripes. You won't see many GTOs with bench seat interiors, but that's OK because in this Lemans, it's all new. The seat covers have simple vertical pleats as original and they match the door panels. Pontiac's European influence shows most clearly in the instrument panel, where four separate round pods house all the main gauges behind a simple 3-spoke steering wheel with bright aluminum accents. The original AM radio remains in place and while there aren't a lot of options, it's clear that someone invested a lot of time and money in making it one of the nicest A-bodies around. The ultra-clean trunk shows off its total lack of rust, further evidence that this car has always been someone's special machine, Lemans or not. The original, numbers-matching 326 cubic inch V8 under the hood looks and drives like it has been freshly restored. Turn the key and it's running with a crisp burble from the exhaust, and anyone who glances under the hood will be pleased to see Pontiac Turquoise paint and chrome valve covers, along with a bright Edelbrock air cleaner. Power brakes and steering and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission make it easy to drive and the dual exhaust with glasspack-style mufflers will keep you entertained on the road. Like the trunk, the floors are clean and with a slightly lowered stance, it sits right. 17-inch Torque Thrusts from American Racing wear appropriately-sized 225/45/17 performance radials that totally fill the wheel wells and add to the performance stance. Forget about pedigrees and names and you'll probably fall in love with this Lemans like we have. Sleek, beautifully finished, and with plenty of muscle, it stands above mere badges to be a wonderful car to drive that will attract a lot of attention at shows. The body shell is, of course, the same, and it still packs a potent, freshly-rebuilt 350 so it'll run with a genuine Goat without breaking a sweat. Looks good, goes fast, costs less, how can you lose? The paint job was done a few years ago, but the gorgeous code 56 Monarch Yellow finish is holding up quite well and combined with the black interior and top, it looks a bit formal on the sleek Lemans bodywork. Fit and finish are quite good with doors that close more easily than just about any other GM car of the period we've experienced, indicative of both quality workmanship and a solid car that hasn't been bent or rusty. The Sport was a lot more GTO than most would believe, including an Endura front bumper and hood scoops for an aggressive look. There's not a lot of trim on the Lemans, but details like the '350' emblems on the rocker panels, the neat little vent behind the front wheels, and the familiar chrome rear bumper all look to be in good shape. Yes, someone has added GTO emblems front and rear, but given the similarities, that can be forgiven. After all, who hasn't dreamed of a GTO ragtop in their garage at some point or another? Dressed to play, the black bucket seat interior is just as functional and inviting as any in a GTO. The seat covers show minimal wear and it's quite possible that things like the door panels and dash pad are originals, with the back seat looking almost like new. This Lemans offers only basic instrumentation, but the three gauge pod layout still looks sporty and the woodgrained appliques look warm and inviting. The cool 3-spoke wheel looks aftermarket but is the optional sport wheel, and the center console houses a shifter that now manages the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission underneath. There is factory air that now uses R134a refrigerant, and the original radio has been dumped in favor of a newer Panasonic AM/FM/CD stereo unit that sounds pretty good in the vintage ragtop. The trunk is correctly finished with spatter paint, what might be the original mat, and a full-sized spare with cover. The engine is the original, numbers-matching Pontiac 350 that seems to ignore the declining horsepower in the early 1970s. It's nicely detailed with corporate turquoise engine enamel, a 4-barrel carburetor, and original air cleaner up top. The great thing is that everything looks factory because it is. It starts quickly and easily, idles with a throaty V8 burble, and moves easily with a solid whack of low-end torque. It's backed by a new TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear end out back, so the powertrain is certainly durable enough to have fun without worries. A recent dual exhaust system with original-style mufflers gives it a mellow soundtrack, and the correct Rallye II wheels won't raise any eyebrows with purists, even with 225/70/14 front and 235/60/14 rear Goodyear radials wrapped around them. If you don't care about pedigrees and investments and just want to get to the business of having fun, this very neatly finished Lemans is your car. Freshly restored and ready to rumble, it brings a 400 cubic inch V8, factory A/C, and a few welcome upgrades that make it a fun cruiser that gets a lot of attention. 1970 was probably the high-water mark for muscle cars, and none looked better than the GTO, which explains why this car is sure to generate a lot of attention. The all-new front end gave the GTO a traditional Pontiac look that was unlike anything else, and it remains true today. The vivid blue paint on this tribute makes it a real eye-catcher and the details that emulate the GTO are all faithfully reproduced. In addition to the straight bodywork, which shows quite well even under the bright lights in our studio, it sports a proper Ram Air hood and wing on the deck lid, as well as the requisite GTO emblems in the proper locations. The paint shows well, and while this isn't intended to fool experts, most of the guys at the local cruise night will nod appreciatively at this car's handsome good looks. There's also a nice-fitting black vinyl top that doesn't show any issues underneath and with a lot of bright chrome and stainless trim, the vivid electric blue paint really pops. Buckets and a console are familiar GTO fare and they make the illusion here far more convincing. The upholstery is in good shape with only minor signs of use and age, pretty much as you'd expect for a car approaching its 45th birthday. A tilt steering column holds a Grant GT steering wheel that's a bit more muscular looking than the original thin-rimmed piece and it still frames a three-hole dash with factory instruments deep inside. Woodgraining on the dash and center console give the GTO an upscale feel inside, which was totally Pontiac's idea when they designed it, and the bright strip of trim that houses the AM/FM radio and A/C controls is a styling detail that dates back to the earliest days of the Goat. In back, the seat looks virtually unused and the trunk is in good order with proper spatter-finish paint. The engine is based on a code YX 400 block, and with upgrades like a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and long-tube headers, it cackles and snarls like a proper GTO should. The block is finished in corporate turquoise paint, so it looks the part, and with chrome valve covers and a matching open-element air cleaner, it has the right attitude. Professionally rebuilt in 2010 to 360 horsepower specifications, it's an extremely strong runner with a fantastic exhaust note thanks to a recent Flowmaster exhaust system with turn-downs ahead of the rear axle. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission always seems to find the right gear and a 10-bolt rear end doesn't seem to mind the torque running through it. It's pretty original underneath, but that only means you can easily spot signs of trouble and this car has nothing to hide. The suspension and brakes are largely stock, but those big 17-inch Torque Thrust wheels and 245/45/17 Kumho performance radials give it a period look that's more in tune with today's style. This isn't a pedigree car, but it is a really straight GTO tribute with a very stout motor. If having fun is your goal, this car does it better than most.
