After earning a somewhat undependable reputation, Maserati pulled out of the American market over 10 years ago. Since then, the company was purchased in 1993 by Fiat, and by '97 was under full control by none other than their one time Italian rivals- Ferrari. Under the Ferrari command, the Maserati 3200GT was developed, with an all new slightly conservative but ultra classy body, and powerful numbers to back it up. Two years later, a mass reconstruction was under way, as work started towards completely reorganizing the Maserati sales network. Also, the factory premises on Viale Ciro Menotti were expanded, and new management headquarters were built. The Ferrari influence proved strong, as the Maserati production factory was completely gutted. All machinery was replaced with state-of-the-art equipment, with intentions of building nothing less than a state-of-art machine. Along with the machinery, some of the new Spyder's technology is directly derived from its new 'stepfamily' as well. The Spyder uses the same F1 derived paddle shifter system as the Ferrari 360 Modena. In 2001, the culmination of Ferrari's efforts paid off, as the class leading 390-horsepower Maserati Spyder was officially introduced world wide-- including America. The 2002 Spyder doesn't offer top quality Ferrari performance, but it does boast impressive statistics. Powered by a 4.2-liter V-8 engine with twin chain-driven overhead camshafts, the Spyder produces 390 horsepower@7,000 rpm and 333 lb-ft. of torque@4,500 rpm. These performance numbers combine for a very respectable sub 5-flat time from 0-60 mph, and top speed of 176 mph. The interior provided even more than what was expected from the Italian sports car. Almost everything is covered in leather, which is available in 10 different shades, with matching carpeting. Standard in the center of the dash is the Maserati Info Center, which employs a 5.8-inch color monitor to control the audio system, climate controls, and trip computer.
