This Esprit left the Hethel Norfolk factory in August of 1984 and was invoiced to Ron Greenspan VW Subaru on Van Ness in San Francisco where it sold new to its first owner on February 22, 1986. The car has lived in the bay area and Southern CA since brand new and had been serviced by Barber Bros Lotus in Concord CA trough the 80’s and early 90’s and has service records and history dating back to brand new. The British Racing Green Metallic paint shows beautifully with just a few stone chips on the front nose and a few stone chips on the lower rockers behind the wheels and three small hairline cracks in the fiberglass on the driver door by the Styled by Giugiaro badge. The interior is in phenomenal condition for its age, the two front seats have recently been re-done in beautiful leather which is a near perfect match to the original Connolly leather. The dash is in excellent condition and does not have any issues with shrinkage or tearing. The black leather on the dash binnacle is also in excellent condition free from any shrinkage or tearing. The engine has been rebuilt by JD Enterprises of Fresno CA and has receipts for all of the work. It idles beautifully and runs through the RPM range freely and smoothly. The engine does not smoke under start up or acceleration and runs incredibly strong. The Turbo kicks in as it should and boosts properly with excellent power. The gearbox is nice and smooth and does not grind in any of the gears and the clutch is strong with no signs of any slipping. The steering has an excellent tight feel and free from any vibrations or sloppiness. The brakes have an excellent positive feel and free from any grinding or fading. All of the electronics in the car are operating as they should, including all of the interior and exterior lights, the dash binnacle lights and the center console lights. The original radio is still intact in the car and operating as it should. The headlight buckets open in sync and close with ease. This Esprit Turbo benefits from incredible service history and maintenance from new and comes complete with its original tool roll, owners handbook and red Lotus book cover, spare, jack, original keys and service history from new. The car has never been involved in any kind of accident and there are no signs of any previous damage. Tires have 90% tread. There are spots where the paint is slightly spidered. This car has never seen snow and is always parked indoors. I drive this car every other weekend to keep the fluids going. Always 93 Shell or Chevron gas. Oil changes have been done more often than needed because I'm anal that way. This was $300 done by Vive in Houston, TX. Sphere Motorsports ran a connection from the brake booster pump to the console on the binnacle. The inspection was done a little under a few months ago and no problems with emissions. Car currently has a lien with USAA but they're easy to work with and the process should be smooth. I know, because that is what I did. In 2002 Lotus only produced 100 of their 25th Anniversary Edition Lotus Esprit V8 Twin Turbo and this one is #74. The last major change Lotus did to the Esprit until they stopped production in 2004 was to switch to the round taillights in 2002. After 10,675 Esprit were made and 28 years after they started, Lotus stopped production on one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Julia Thompson, the designer of this body style, started the new updating in 1993, with 2002 being the last year of the last round of major changes (taillamps). The car is beautiful and yes you will get your picture taken while driving, while it is parked and you will hear all sorts of wild guesses as to what it is as unknowing males try to impress their equally unknowing girlfriends to their car knowledge. I have been told it is a Ferrari, a Bugatti, to a secret Corvette. I am not sure why people will tell you what you drive, instead of asking, but they will. I bought the car for my wife on 11/29/2010 as a Christmas Present for her from Boardwalk Porsche with 21,541 miles. In the last 5 years we have only put 2700 miles but those have been some fun miles. I live on a street with 7 Ferraris (including a F40 and a F50), one Underground Racing Lambo, and a couple of Porsches, but mine gets the mailman to stop and take pictures. In the only car show we put it in, it one first place at the Boardwalk Spring Concorso on April 14, 2012 for the British Class. They used to have pictures up so you might be able to use your favorite search engine and see this beautiful car in action. Notes/Work done on the car: 1. The car has a clear screen on the front. 2. I replaced the clutch last year ($8k). 3. I replaced the battery with an Optima battery with a trickle charger setup. I will include the setup with the car. 4. The car has been completely checked out, and you will see from the pictures with the car on, no idiot lights are lit. A. Timing Belts have been changed to JAE BLUE timing Belts. B. All four Oxygen Sensors where changed as well. C. Also changed the a small Oil Hose, Idler Serp Pully and the Crankshaft position sensor. They were not “bad” but they a normal failure parts that are very easy to replace when replacing the Belts. D. All this work was done by Small Car World a very well respected Lotus service shop. If you have any questions you can call Richard and he can talk about the car. If you have the opportunity to go see his shop you should. There were a dozen or more Lotuses and very specialized British race cars from all years. 5. Tires are great, and nothing is leaking from any portion. 6. The glass is all perfect and the seats are great. I had new Gas Lift Shocks added to even the hatch stays open by itself. Don't laugh, those things are very expensive! 7. Sometime in it past the car had a cat back system installed and it sounds awesome. 8. I know of nothing wrong with the car except that the wife does not drive it now and this kind of car begs to be driven. With her not driving it, medical conditions, and myself being more of a convertible man, it is time for the next lucky person. 9. I also have the Services Manual included with car. 10. Rare supercar looks and performance for a very attractive price! It is hard to describe just what it's like to drive a Lotus, but if you are the type that really loves the act of driving, then this is the ultimate car for you. Fast, with amazing handling, the Esprit was comparable to a Ferrari 308 of the same year. Also, pictures don't do it justice. For your consideration is this 1983 Lotus Esprit Turbo. I am an involved automotive enthusiast and have owned five other Esprit Turbos so know these cars well. This Esprit has 22,600 miles, is in its original spec still retaining its original factory applied red on all panels, is accident free, and has a nice condition interior. Some work is needed to be completed on this Esprit to make it roadworthy. Very importantly, the engine starts well, idles great, and runs great. Please read below for more info. Photos: Mechanical: This Esprit unfortunately was stored for some time not driven. An eclectic man that had a large collection of sports cars let many of them sit unused, including this Esprit. This Esprit is in the process of being brought to road worthy condition. The carburetors have been rebuilt and adjusted. Pictures showing the cleaned jets and in-process work are shown. The oil and coolant were of course changed as well. The engine runs and runs very well. As stated, I have had numerous other Esprit Turbos and this engine sounds as good as the rest. It idles nice and without any sounds that might concern someone. If there was something that really concerned me about this car, then I would have not bought it. The cooling system works well as it keeps a good temperature and does not run hot. The exhaust system is in good condition. For you California folks, the smog pump is still present. The turbo/wastegate sounds good and shows boost when revving it up. It revs up fine without stumbling. The engine runs smooth, does not blow smoke, and no excessive leaks. The engine does not show it needs anything significant. What is keeping this Esprit from being driven is the clutch hydraulics. What is keeping me from completing these fairly simple repairs is the typical story of “too much” other stuff going on and if you look through the photos and see my garage, you will see what I mean. I purchased a new clutch slave cylinder and was going to start there. Then, if necessary I would rebuild/replace the clutch master cylinder and then also if necessary replace the clutch fluid line. The gear shift lever feels good and it goes into gear. The clutch pedal does not have pressure which points to the slave cylinder, hose, or clutch master cylinder. These items are normal items to be replaced on a 32 year old car anyway. Once addressing the slave cylinder, then I planned to get the car out on the road to see how the brakes would be. The brakes have some pressure in the pedal. Obviously the fluid should be replaced as it is old but doesn’t look terrible. There is no excessive fuel smell. The fuel tanks from what I can tell look to be solid which is very important for these cars. The suspension seems fine. The tires are the actual, very hard to find, proper size and possibly the actual original tires. They have enough tread to scoot around on and are not dry cracked. The frame looks absolutely excellent, without significant oxidation, and etc. Body: A car’s finish is only original once and this Esprit’s finish is the original Lotus applied factory red paint and decals. That is very difficult to come by. It shows aging of course but there is something neat about it because it is the original paint. It is somewhat oxidized, some wear through marks, has some chips, couple stains, etc. A few hours with a buffer and some touch up would really make it nice. The paint would definitely acceptable for presentable driver once it is cleaned up. The wheels are fine. Front and rear bumpers are respectable. What is nice is the fiberglass shows no evidence of being repaired anywhere. This body is nice and straight. All of the glass is the original “XXX” glass. Interior: The interior on this Esprit needs to be cleaned but it is in nice condition. The leather seats are excellent. The door panels are great. The dash is great and not pulling off like I have seen on other Esprits. Some items missing are the floor mats, heater control knobs, one cigarette lighter, etc. The seats need seat rails still or could probably be bolted down in place as they are. So there are some finishing touches needed in the interior as well but it is quite complete and respectable looking. I believe the radio is the original unit. The shifter knob is still the original wood one and is nice. In Conclusion: Two Italian motorcycles, a vintage race car, other sports cars, working excessive hours at my full time job, and trying to also run a small business has caused me to look for ways to simplify. I have done nothing to the Esprit since January. I purchased a clutch slave cylinder numerous months ago (will be included with sale), and still have not even jacked the car up to put it in. I think I have a new clutch for this year of Esprit and new tan headliner hanging around somewhere in my garage that I would be willing to include as well. The way things are going I would personally not have this Esprit done until next spring with the way my schedule is. So it is time to simplify and make the Esprit available for you to enjoy. Many of the mechanical Esprit parts are relatively inexpensive as Lotus used numerous parts from Triumph and other European companies. Service manuals and owner’s manual will be included. Clean title included. This Esprit is some clutch hydraulic work (slave cylinder already purchased, stainless hose and clutch master cylinder are less than $250) away from being driven around. At the price I am asking, you can get in this Esprit at a very fair price and have a numerous thousand dollar cushion and be under what it is valued at when you are done. These Giugiaro Esprits are increasing in demand and offer great bank for the buck. At the time of posting this, this was the only Turbo Giugiaro on Ebay. These years had some of the lowest production numbers for the Esprit. These cars offer some of the best handling for the time period and actually are decently quick. These are VERY VERY fun vehicles. This was my dream car since I was a teenager. Two foot surgeries and two kids later and I know I'll never drive it like it should be driven, if at all. Thought purchasing through a Lotus dealer would mean everything was perfect, but the car did have a couple of issues. There is a slow electrical drain. Seems pretty common for British cars. The dealer worked on it but never solved the problem. I started using a trickle charger, then decided it was easier to just disconnect the battery all together. Brakes and rotors were brand new when I bought the car 3,000 miles ago, but pressure was not releasing when they warmed up and they would eventually lock up. Fixed by the dealer but may have been some excess wear on the brakes. Still only 3,000 miles on them. During one repair/service visit, the dealer left the car out on their lot rather than keeping it in the garage as was customary for prior visits. It was keyed over night. The dealer's insurance paid for it, but it did require most of the car to be repainted. Paint was done by Central Auto Body in St. Louis using the same DuPont paint used at the factory. Matched it perfectly. Then I moved a few years ago. With the garage full of moving boxes and other junk, I clipped the left rear fender on the garage door. Detail in pictures provided. It is a scrape, not a dent. Shouldn't take much to fix it. There is a small tear at the seam on the drivers seat. It's several inches long, but right on the seam so you can't really see it in the pictures. It's the seam that would be under the drivers left leg. Other than that the interior is in great shape. Electric windows work, but are a but sluggish toward the top. Rear view mirrors can sag. Simple to tighten, but they sag again eventually. The drain in the left headlight well got plugged up and there is still some standing water in it. I think that covers known issues. During the first few years of ownership, the car was driven regularly. Kids came along and it wasn't driven much, but it did get out of the garage once a week so I could get my lawnmower out and taken around the block. I moved and don't mow my lawn anymore. Now it only gets out of the garage a few times a year for garage cleaning or just to give it a bath and let it run for a while. So, it's been sitting a lot for the last 5 years. Haven't even updated the tags, but it has been garaged and covered. Hopefully I haven't spent too much time focusing on issues rather than talking about what an amazing car it is. Turns heads like a Ferrari for a fraction of the cost. Really quick off the line, pushing you back it your seat like few production cars do. Amazing handling - fun on the winding country roads. Comes with manual and tools. The identical S4s that sold a few weeks ago sold for $25,500 (see completed listings). This one has 35,000 fewer miles and, from the description, a better interior. Offset that with the fact that this one has been mostly idle for a few years and will need at least some basic service and the scrape painted. I think I'm being pretty conservative by listing at $23,900. Car is sold "as is." I am a private seller, not a dealer. I cannot offer any type of warranty. Buyer responsible for transportation, but seller will make reasonable effort to meet any trucking company at a nearby location more conducive to loading a vehicle. $1000 deposit via PayPal within 48hrs. Sold new in California, It was regularly driven until Y2K and pretty much sitting since. Clean Carfax shows no accidents or any other issues. WE have replaced timing belt and clutch assembly. Timing belt due to age, clutch however was on its last leg. Anyhow, starts, runs, drive good. Clutch has upgraded steel braided hose, done prior to us. Body has been re-sprayed once before to same yellow, not a greatest job bit still looks good. Interior could use little help, dashboard lacquer has pealed and will need refinishing. Seats are OK but could use little help, maybe leather treatment or just soapy water. Anyway, Non rusty, clean Carfax, Mechanically sound, good looking Stevens bodied Esprit at reasonable price!
