1959 Ford Thunderbird Convertible I have a long history with this car but the short story is: I bought this car in 1974 when I was 19 years old. After 4 years I sold it to a good friend who babied it and kept it in a nice climate controlled garage for the next 36 years. Occasionally it got out to a car show or out for a Sunday Drive. About a year and a half ago it came back into my possession. I have found, in the time I have owned it that I just am not really the kind of person to own a 56 year old car. I have other interests in my life that seem to take priority. The car definitely is a looker though. Any drive will elicit lots of horn honking and waving.. I've probably put less than 1000 miles on it since I have had it. I had a complete tuneup done with new plugs and wires. The car runs great. Starts right up, transmission shifts smoothly. Top electrics work fine. I'm kind of disappointed that I didn't get it out more this summer but I am quite involved with motorcycles and that really is more of a passion for me. This car is a survivor . Body is almost rust free with just a tiny amount down by the wheel openings. Much of the interior has been replaced. Carpets like new. New floor mats. Dash was replaced. Door panels are decent but one has small rips by the pull handle and the other has a small tear by the door handle. Top and rear window are actually original. I've tried to show condition with pictures. Radio lights up but doesn't play. Clock doesn't work. Vacuum wipers want to work but go about halfway and then stop. The Kelsey Hayes wire wheels were purchased by me back in 1975 from a 62 or 63 Sports Roadster. They are not reproductions. They are in great shape. I believe the car was repainted in the early 70's. Looks great from 20 feet but obviously not show condition. Car runs and drives good. Much of the suspension and brakes was rebuilt a few years ago. There is a leak in the exhaust manifold on the left side. Not huge but you can hear it. The transmission shifts smoothly thru all the gears but the linkage is out of adjustment and it doesn't allow you to go into low gear. D1 and D2 both work properly though. There are a few fluid leaks. One seems to be power steering although I've only added a little one time and a small leak at the rearend. I'm not a mechanic and can't tell you a whole lot more about the mechanical condition. took it out for about a 75 mile drive awhile back with some other "Cars of the Jet Age" and it ran great. I was suppose to be receiving a lot of the paperwork dealing with the cars history and service records but as of yet am still waiting. They may or may not be forthcoming. I listed this at $27,500 based on the low side of Hagerty's Classic Car Value guide. Several people I've talked to seemed to think that was a reasonable starting point. The pictures with the top down were taken the summer of 2014 and the car had the wider white walls on it. I still have these tires but they are bias ply and I suspect over 30 years old. I didn't feel safe driving with them although the have plenty of tread and show no cracking. The pictures with the top up were taken this past October and have the smaller whitewalls and radial tires on it. I'd be happy to talk with anybody who has a serious interest in the car. I'm looking for a good home for it with someone who has a real passion for cars like this and would treat it with the respect it deserves. I feel it's spent too much of it's life in a garage under cover. The final picture is my friend Barry, (the previous owner) with a couple of the Beach Boys, (Mike Love and Bruce Johnston) at Tulalip Casino a few years back. Lance Lambert of The Vintage Vehicle Show did a piece on this car while Barry still owned it. Ebay won't let me stet up a link but it is easy to find on YouTube. This former Southern California car was owned by my brother-in-law, from 1968-1973. Then I purchased it from him in 1973 to present. This Classic T-bird has "never" had any rust what so ever. It has been in my Garage for 43 yrs and hasn't seen any rain in all that time. I only drove it on sunny days. It is very straight, however it needs some restoration. This is a rare, heavily optioned car. Original factory options include: Air Conditioning, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Power Drivers Seat, and Cruise Control. It is hard to believe that there was actual cruise control in 1964. All cruise control parts are present and restored, some are NOS. In 2010 this car was extensively restored, garage kept and driven very little since then. The car is painted in stunning medium Blue Metallic paint, excellent attention to detail is evident in often overlooked places like the door jambs. A fiberglass tonneau cover was added and painted to match. The car is it's own rolling car show.New interior including carpet and door panels, correct Ford white color tone. The convertible top frame was repainted, new pads and correct top, new lines, cylinders, switches, and relays. NOS parts used when available. A secondary switch for the top mechanism was added under the fuel door, to allow for raising and lowering the deck lid and top while standing at the rear deck. The attention to detail is self evident. Here is a link to a video showing the convertible top mechanism in action and a walk around of the car. http://youtu.be/HmAIxOG56Bo The bumpers were re-chromed, stainless steel polished, all new or NOS emblems and brightwork. Several dash and console pieces also re-chromed as well. The grill bars on these cars are usually dinged or bent, and are hard to refinish. I was able to find a NOS replacement grill, which looks outstanding! In 1966, Ford added the 345 horsepower 428 engine as an option. That sounded like a great idea, so the original 390 was replaced with a strong running stock Ford 428 Police Interceptor (same engine used for the Shelby GT 500) with the original factory aluminum intake manifold (1967 date code). The heads were completely reworked, but the bottom end of the engine was not opened, as it was running strong, it has factory TBird exhaust manifolds. In order to allow for the factory Thunderbird valve covers, the oil fill is located behind the air cleaner. The engine compartment was taken to bare metal, paint matched, and is very clean and detailed. The original Thunderbird air cleaner and valve covers were chrome plated. The Factory AC compressor was replaced with a newer style unit, the alternator is a high amperage unit and is chrome plated as well. Other under-hood parts and supports are painted gloss black. A battery disconnect was added since the car is not driven frequently. The better accommodate the 428 engine, the cruise-o-matic transmission was replaced with an NOS Ford C6 unit, which while unused, was opened and overhauled. The factory drum brakes were changed to 4-Wheels Disc which work great. The tasteful looking master cylinder can be seen under the hood. To increase stability and drivability, a custom rear anti-sway bar was added. The front anti-sway bar was replaced with a larger one. The gas tank is new along with the fuel lines. The factory convertible-specific underbody support braces are still present. The rear axle and differential were powder coated black, as were all four wheels. The undercarriage is clean and has factory correct undercoating. The power retractable antenna was an option starting in 1965. A 1965 power antenna and correct under dash console were added.The car came with only front seat belts, but correct rear seat belts were added. There was a drivers side rear view mirror, and a NOS passenger side mirror was added. The power windows function well, switches and motors were replaced. Numerous photos are included to show the condition, and a link to a video is posted as well. There are a few small scratches and chips, consistent with usage. This car is beautiful, but is an antique, and as with all old cars it could develop mechanical issues at any time. Please ask any questions prior to bidding. Your bid is a contract to own this car.
