While it would technically be called an older restoration due to the passage of time since it was restored, the car still presents as a freshly restored car, having been used carefully and sparingly since restoration. The Adventurer is tour de force of 50's styling elements and one of Virgil Exner's most beloved designs. There are so many great styling cues on this car I could go for hours but those of you who know these cars don't need to be told this stuff anyway. This is an exciting car and a rare opportunity to acquire of the best designs from the 50's, an early muscle car to be sure! We have many more photographs of this car, please click on any image to be taken to our full-size image list! The DeSoto was an American automobile marque, manufactured and marketed by the now-defunct DeSoto Division of the Chrysler Corporation from 1928 to 1961. The DeSoto logo featured a stylized image of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. The De Soto marque was officially dropped November 30, 1960, with over two million vehicles built since 1928. Chrysler wanted to enter the brand in competition with its arch-rivals General Motors, Studebaker, and Willys-Knight, in the mid-price class. Shortly after DeSoto was introduced, however, Chrysler completed its purchase of the Dodge Brothers, giving the company two mid-priced makes. Initially, the two-make strategy was relatively successful, with DeSoto priced below Dodge models. Despite the economic times, DeSoto sales were relatively healthy, pacing Dodge at around 25,000 units in 1932. In fact, when DeSoto first came out in 1929, it broke the first-year sales record, with 81,065 cars sold, and was not beaten until 1960 by the Ford Falcon. However, in 1933, Chrysler reversed the market positions of the two marques in hopes of boosting Dodge sales. By elevating DeSoto, it received Chrysler's streamlined 1934 Airflow bodies. But, on the shorter DeSoto wheelbase, the design was a disaster and was unpopular with consumers. Unlike Chrysler, which still had more traditional models to fall back on, DeSoto was hobbled by the Airflow design until the 1935 Airstream arrived. Aside from its Airflow models, DeSoto's 1942 model is probably its second most memorable model from the pre-war years, when the cars were fitted with powered pop-up headlights, a first for a North American mass-production vehicle. (The Cord 810 introduced dashboard hand cranked hidden headlamps in the 1936 model year.) DeSoto marketed the feature as "Air-Foil" lights. After wartime restrictions on automotive production were ended, DeSoto returned to civilian car production when it reissued its 1942 models as 1946 models, but without the hidden-headlight feature. Until 1952, DeSoto used the Deluxe and Custom model designations. In 1952 DeSoto added the Firedome with its 276-cid Hemi engine. However, in 1953, DeSoto dropped the Deluxe and Custom names and designated its six-cylinder cars the 'Powermaster' and its V8 car remained the 'Firedome'. At its height, DeSoto's more popular models included the Firesweep, Firedome, and Fireflite. The DeSoto Adventurer, introduced for 1956 as a high-performance hard-top coupe (similar to Chrysler's 300), became a full-range model in 1960. In 1955, along with all Chrysler models, De Sotos were redesigned with Virgil Exner's "Forward Look." DeSotos sold well through the 1956 model year. That year, for the first and only time in the marque's history, it served as Pace Car at the Indianapolis 500. For the 1956 update Exner gave the DeSoto soaring tailfins fitted with triple taillights, and consumers responded by buying record numbers. Introduced in 1956 as a sub-series of the top level DeSoto Fireflite series, the Adventurer was originally marketed as a limited production two-door hardtop, and available in a white/black/gold color scheme only. The first Adventurer came with a hi-output 341 cubic inch Hemi V8, dual exhausts and custom appointments and trim. Standard trim included dual outside side mirrors, gold wheel covers, radio,[2] electric clock, padded instrument panel, windshield washers, full instrumentation, and heavy duty suspension. A total of 996 cars were sold in its first year. 1961 Desoto . 4 dr hardtop. Last year for the Desoto. Very low production #'s. only 2100 of the 4 drs made.. Very Very nice car. Runs like new. Was correctly painted in the mid 90's along with a new interior. Car is solid and the under carriage is rust free... It was originally a southern car so it hasn't seen the northern winters.. The engine is the original 361 and it was also gone thru in the mid 90's. It runs strong and very quiet. The push button trans shifts very smooth... Poly ply tires are in very nice condition as well.. The car has the following items updated; new battery, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake lines, intake manifold gasket, valve covers, radiator and hoses, water pump, fuel pump, distributor and ignition, plugs and plug wires, fan belts and generator ... The car is located in southern Maine. Maine DOES NOT require a title on older vehicles. The car will come w/ a bill of sale only. ( I do have an older title from Virginia that was w/ the car when I purchased it..) Any questions please feel to call me at 207 337 8799.. Thank you, Dave .. Ps The heading says Adventurer, its not.

1960 DESOTO ADVENTURER 4-DOOR HARDTOP Finished in classic All Black with beautiful Silver interior. This magnificent Adventurer is among one of the finest examples we have seen in over 20 years. It has been beautifully restored and is now ready to be shown or driven. We are proud to offer this investment grade Desoto to the most astute collector, investor or enthusiast who understands and appreciates the investment potential of this great American classic. Buy with confidence – this might just be one of the best finds on Classic Cars!HISTORY OF THE DESOTO ADVENTURER:As an automotive swan song, it is hard to imagine anything more impressive than the 1960 DeSoto Adventurer. It was built in an era when designers had free rein to explore the limits of what their draft pencils and fertile imaginations could conceive, unrestricted by the restraints of corporate average fuel economy. In today’s world of plastic coated compacts, it is easy to forget just how big the full-size cars of 50 years ago actually were.Weighing in at just under 2-tons, there was nothing subtle about this graceful, four-door hardtop, with 18 feet of sculpted sheet metal flowing liquid like from the leading edge of a massive chrome grill to the tips of the twin tail fins. This 1960 DeSoto Adventurer four door Hardtop was priced at $3,727.00. The highest priced DeSoto for 1960. The Fireflite Four Door Sedan was the lowest at $3,017.00. Engine performance was down on the 1960 DeSoto's but the Fins were still flying high. Please contact John Sherman at 314-291-7000 or [email protected] with any questions. Also available via cell at 314-704-2040 for a complete walk around description of the car. Ad provided by ClassicCars.com

This is an exceptionally nice 1956 Desoto Adventurer that has had a complete ground up professional restoration. I am the third owner and the car was originally bought new by a doctor in California and it remained in his family for many years. I purchased it a number of years ago from a Desoto collector when it was still in it's unrestored state. It was very usuable and in very good shap for an original low mileage car. Over a couple of years, I had a professional restoration completed. The car was way too nice, clean and rust free for a frame off restoratlion. The paint, stainless and chrome have all been done to a very high grade. All the interior was done exactly like original down to the gold thread in the black carpet. The second owner had the interior cloth replacement woven to match the original. I do have the original back seat rest stamped viny that was only found on the Adventurer. The dash board was refinished in the original gold color which was not the same formula as the outside gold color. The step plates are new. All the glass is original except the windshield which is new. All the chrome interior pieces including the dash knobs are either just like new or were replaced. Everything works well including the gauges, radio, heater, power windows and power seat. The padded dash is new as original. The engine was removed and resealed and runs perfect. Somewhere along the way the first owner had the block replaced correctly although the family members could not remember the reason why it was done. The car is equipped with power steering, brakes, windows and seat. The wheel covers have been re-anodized but where very nice to begin with. The radial white wall tires are new. This is an exceptional low mileage car and I have left the first owner's California AAA sticker in the rear window. Washington State buyers may be subject to Washington State Sales Tax.
