The Z06 received a new carbon fiber hood that is 10.6 pound less than the fiberglass part. All the commemorative editions received a new Le Mans Blue paint and shale interior. Embroidery on the headrests of each seat also identify the commemorative editions. The Z06 also received silver and red graphics on the hood roof and tail. The Z06 also received suspension tuning that allowed it to run the challenging 14 mile long NURBURGRING track in under 8 minutes. COURTESY OF MOTOR TREND MAGAZINE: There’s one bit of CE hardware-related news: The ’04 Z06 gets a race-inspired option in the form of a lightweight carbon-fiber hood that weighs just 20.5 pounds–10.6 less than the standard unit. This hood is constructed of unique, single-direction fibers intended to eliminate waviness, a trait common on painted carbon fiber. Atop the paint are silver stripes with red edges, similar to the stripe package used as a Le Mans-only aesthetic on the C5-R race cars (GM won’t run these stripes at the rest of the American Le Mans race series events). GM says this is the first time carbon fiber has been used for a major body panel in a mass-production vehicle. “We definitely have technology transfer from [C5-R] racing to production with the example of putting carbon fiber into a series production street car that people can afford,” notes Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill. Apart from the Commemorative package for ’04, the Z06 receives specific chassis tuning upgrades intended to deliver increased performance and more vehicle control–all with a smoother ride around town. Considerable attention was paid to refinement of the Sachs’ shock valving in order to diminish the impact of yaw and roll, particularly in a series of tight corners. Ride/Handling Chassis Engineer Michael Neal states, “We reshaped the force-velocity curve to give more control, but not at the expense of ride. What the customer feels, particularly on a racetrack, is a more poised car. He doesn’t have to wait for body roll to settle during transient maneuvers, so he can be aggressive hustling from one corner to another, particularly as they come in quicker succession.” Added to the handling mix are stiffer upper control-arm bushings teamed with slightly softer rear anti-roll bar bushings to deliver flatter handling and more stability going into the corner, thus minimizing oversteer on corner exit. “If you want to fix oversteer at the back, you first need to fix it at the front of the corner,” says Neal. Specifically, deterring oversteer requires generating a smoother entry, which, in the case of the ’04 Z06, is noticeably easier compared with the ’03 model. The chassis refinements and reduced vehicle weight have paid off, as the ’04 Z06 recently joined the ranks of the select few volume-production vehicles to have broken the eight-minute barrier for lap times at the 170-turn, 14-mile-long Nurburgring circuit in Germany, where Team Corvette performs development testing. This is a worthy accomplishment, considering that the exact same vehicle can then be driven cross-country in air-conditioned comfort, backed by a factory warranty. Hill’s goal for the ’04 Z06 was “to make it the quickest Corvette ever produced,” sending the C5 out with a bang. That it is, and that he has. Next were some hot laps in an ’04 Z06. Although it had been a few years since Fellows aggressively hustled a street car around a racetrack, his extensive experience in showroom-stock racing quickly emerged. With 405 horsepower delivered from the 5.7-liter LS6 V-8, the Z06 has the torque to easily overpower the Goodyear street tires. So Fellows maintained a keen focus on cornering smoothness. “I was surprised by the general balance,” notes Fellows. On his third lap, he turned in an impressive 1:33.9-second time, proving the fortitude of the street-legal Z06 package. “To really get an appreciation of what this thing’s capable of, you need a racing seat. I found myself being tossed around quite a bit–the cornering capabilities are that good.”–J.K. 1955 Chevrolet Belair Hardtop I have owned this 1955 Chevrolet Belair hardtop since 1983. It was built at the Van Nuys, CA plant in May, 1955. Always a desert Arizona car, I purchased it in Douglas, AZ, a small town on the Mexican border. The original colors were turquoise and white, with a matching interior. Its original drivetrain was a 265ci V8 / 3speed manual transmission. Between 1992 and 1997, I performed a complete body-off-the-frame 1400+ hour rebuilt of the entire car. If you’re are truly interest in it, you will appreciate the detailed information that follows. If you’re just passing through, you’ll probably get bored and move on. Sorry to have wasted your time! J Upgrades made during the rebuilt include; 1995 GM ZZ3 350ci engine, turbo 350 automatic transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes, air conditioning, lowered front suspension and dual exhaust. The paint color is GM Medium Garnett Red Poly. The roof color is GM White Diamond Pearl. The interior paint color is Dark Slate. The paint is PPG Deltron Basecoat/Clearcoat. After completion in 1997, it was judged three times in 1000 point competition; 1997 Classic Chevy Int’l Convention, Reno, NV – 982 points & “Platinum Award” 1999 Bowtie Chevys Int’l Convention, Ventura, CA – 990 points & “Gold Award” 2002 Classic Chevy Western Nat’l Convention, San Diego, CA – 999 points & “Platinum Award” (High Point car, also awarded “Best of Show”) This classic has been a magazine feature car of both; Classic Chevy International (CCI) – January, 2003 Bowtie Chevys (BTC) – January, 2000 Since then, it has been maintained in show condition, driven locally and enclosed trailered longer distances. It has been driven less than 7800 miles since the restoration was completed in 1997! When I purchased the car, it had been built as a reliable driver for the owner’s wife. It was painted gypsy red and had a 1955 6cyl/powerglide combo. It was a solid, complete and well running driver. As a member of Desert Classic Chevys (Phoenix, AZ), I used the car for local events and car shows, including the 1985 CCI Western Regional in Flagstaff, AZ. After moving to Southern California, I used the car for events and activities with my local club; Classic Chevys of Southern California. After attending the 1991 CCI Western National Convention in San Diego, CA, the decision was made to completely rebuild the car. The build would be to my personal preferences, with a goal of testing it, and my work, against the CCI 1000 point judging sheet and the high level of quality displayed at the top points level. From the beginning, the entire restoration process was documented and cataloged. I followed Harold Louisiana’s book “How to Restore Your 57 Chevy” as a guide for the process. I kept a calendar on the wall and documented, each day, what I worked on/started/completed and how many hours I worked that day. The calendars, along with every receipt, are going to the new owner. I also have photo documentation of the entire rebuild. The body was completely hand stripped (including trunk, firewall, floorboard, etc.) to bare metal and the original undercoating was hand removed to reveal the rust-free metal underneath. The hood, trunk, doors and various interior pieces where chemically stripped to bare metal. The frame and all chassis components (rear end, springs, A-arms, steering, etc.) were also chemically stripped. There was no rot repair needed anywhere on the car! A few spots in the trunk, floorboard and over the headlights had minor surface rust. The passenger side rocker panel had an old accident repair, which was replaced with “best quality” reproduction sheet metal. The seams on the firewall were smoothed. When filler was needed in any area, “All-Metal” (a high-end filler that contains metal and works like lead) was used. The insides of the doors, trunk lid, fenders, rocker panels and rear window “lower” areas, along with the floorboard and trunk floor were coated with POR-15 rust-preventative sealant and primed for paint. The underside and firewall were sprayed with self-etching primer. The underside, firewall and trunk were painted with PPG acrylic enamel. The dash and misc. interior parts received the self-etching primer and were also painted with PPG acrylic enamel. The outer surfaces of the body, doors, fenders, hood and trunk were sprayed with self-etching primer and followed with multiple coats of primer-surfacer. Between coats, the panels were long-block sanded to a smooth, even surface. The roof was painted in a PPG 3-stage pearl basecoat/clearcoat urethane. The body was painted in a PPG basecoat/clearcoat urethane. The clearcoat was wet sanded down to 1600 grit and buffed to the final finish. (Note: I always thought the outside sunvisor was an awesome accessory, plus you rarely see the hardtop version. I stumbled across this NOS visor (still in the GM box) under the table of a toy vendor at the Pomona Auto Swap Meet. He didn’t know what he had, and I couldn’t pay him fast enough! Thus, I added it, plus the required dash traffic light viewer, to the build.) The engine is a new GM ZZ3 350cid/345hp crate motor, which uses all new components, including the block, aluminum heads, long water pump and an HEI distributor. I topped the engine with a new Holley 750cfm carburetor and GM “ram horn” exhaust manifolds. The transmission is a turbo 350 from Performance Automotive Warehouse (PAW) and is a heavy duty “RV” build with an 1100rpm stall converter. The dual exhaust system was built and installed by Thermal Research And Development Exhaust Systems. It is constructed of 2 1/2” aluminized metal, mandrel bent, and exits the back of the car similar to the style used on the Nomad. The power steering is a “605” unit, with the original steering column adapted to fit. The frame and chassis components were all powdercoated gloss black. Carrera gas shocks are used, along with new lowering front coil springs. The brakes are power disc (front), using a kit from CCI with all new parts. The rear gear is a rebuilt 3:31 unit from a ’57 Chevy. The interior is a kit designed and sewn by Ciadella Interiors, using medium grey fabrics. The seat frames were completely rebuilt and extra insulating pad was laid on the floor before the carpet was installed. The glass is a tinted, matched kit. All interior chrome trim pieces are “best quality” reproduction items. The A/C is an “Old Air” brand R-12 system designed for 55-57 Chevys. It has held its charge and blown cold since installation! It has a small Stewart-Warner temperature gauge and a USA-1 AM/FM Cassette (remember those!) in the dash. The rebuilt original electric wiper motor does work! The entire car was rewired using the best quality original reproduction wiring kits and looks factory original. The wheels are original 15x7 Chevy Rallyes, powdercoated medium grey. The tires are Hoosier P235/60R15. The rocker mouldings and gravel shields are reproductions. The rest of the stainless is original. It was straightened and polished by an “old-school” SoCal craftsman to a “better than reproduction” finish. The front bumper is the original 1-piece California bumper. The rear bumper is an original wagon 3-piece bumper. The accessory bumper and grill guard are original to the car. Everything was triple-chrome plated by Lemon Grove plating in San Diego, CA. Every hinge, latch, spring and other cad piece was re-plated. (Note: Back in the 90’s, CCI offered “good” and “best” quality reproduction parts. Every repro part purchased for this car was the “best” quality! Today (in my humble opinion), many of the reproduction parts are not available at the level of fit & finish that I used during this build.) Everything on the car works wonderfully….though the original electric clock can be finicky….and I could never get the speedo gear indicator to line up with the turbo transmission shifter :) As I said up top, I built this car to meet my personal preferences. I wanted a car that maintained the timeless, classic looks of the 1955 Chevy; one that would not go “out of style”. I wanted it to look like Chevrolet could have built it this way. I used genuine GM parts whenever possible. I wanted it to ride well and be tight, but to have the feel of a real 1955 Chevy (no Corvette subframes, air-ride suspensions, or computer controlled engines for me). The car was built to last forever! Extra steps were taken whenever the final results could be improved. I was aware of shortcuts that professional shops can take to reduce time and costs, in order to improve profits. But I didn’t have to make those choices. Ultimately, the finished product was better than I could’ve ever imagined! I also mentioned that I wanted to see how my work would stand up to the 1000pt judging sheet, at a time when big money was behind the CCI show winners. At the completion of this restoration, I had performed all disassembly, preparation, paint/bodywork, restoration and assembly in my home garage. It was truly “by owner”. After winning “Best of Show” and scoring 999pts in 2002, I was ready to move on to other things and enjoy my little ’55. Now it’s time to move on again and I am confident that the car will bring joy to someone else for many years to come……. (Note: At the time I scored 999, no car had ever scored a perfect 1000pts in CCI judging. I lost one point, when one of the judges deducted a point from every car in the class for “tail lights misaligned” and convinced a second judge to follow. The third judge did not deduct the point. Everyone in the class agreed we didn’t know what the issue was, so the “problem” could never be rectified. It wasn’t until sometime later that a car scored a perfect 1000 pointsg.) In addition to the car, the buyer will get all records of the restoration, receipts and photos taken during the process. Also, all judging sheets, award plaques, Platinum & Gold certificates, display signs and magazines in which the car has appeared will go to the new owner. The car can be driven anywhere without issues. I will assist the buyer with shipping the car (I highly recommend Reliable Carriers: their enclosed transportation is first class and worth the extra cost). HOWEVER, If you don't mind a little work, and if you want a well-built, proven and capable driver that is clean enough to take to the big shows, cool enough to take to the shadiest parts of town, and reliable enough to take anywhere, this is the one for you. This truck comes with a whole bunch of extras that the previous owner never got to install too, like a BRAND NEW IN THE BOX chrome steering column with tilt, BRAND NEW IN THE BOX Dakota digital gauge insert panel, and more! It was done a few years ago, and has been driven and used, and has chips, tiny dings, a few scuffs, and some spots where prior repairs are showing. Worst of it is the driver side lower rocker where it has cracked and split, and the bottom rear of that door which has cracked as well, and has a small triangle that has chipped out. Drip rails have light signs of issues, but are solid metal underneath and on the lip. A magnet sticks to them all the way around and on the windshield header as well. Front fenders are really solid and nice. Roof is really solid and nice. Passenger door is really solid and nice. Bed and tail gate are really solid and nice, and has light fill around the wheel lips which is solid and clean looking. Chrome bumpers front and rear are in excellent condition. New tail lights are installed, and need wired. Headlamps are installed, and have loomed wiring in place, but a brand new set of Union Pacific LED headlamps are included as well! Chrome grill looks amazing, as do the mirrors on each side. Door handles are in great shape! Parking lamp bezels are new, and the wiper arms look like they might be too. Side trim is in fantastic condition, and has only a few minor marks. Emblems are in great condition. Black powder coated wheels are in excellent condition, and have new baby moon caps all around. They are wrapped in new American Classic white wall radials size P205/75R15 all the way around with less than 1,000 miles on them. Side glass and vent windows are crack and chip free, and looks original to the truck. Rear glass is crack and chip free, and has light markings on it from certain angles. Windshield is solid and clean, but does have three chips in it. Weather seals on the windshield and back window are in great condition, soft, and not damaged. The bed wood on the raised floor in the bed is purposefully aged, but is solid enough to stand and walk on without issue. Relocated fuel tank cover was hit with pool acid to age it a little too, as were the stainless bolts holding the stainless slats down. Pop open the hood and you see a clean, finished, and painted engine bay with normal signs of use. It is not perfect looking, but you can pop open the hood with pride at any car show. Chrome power brake booster looks great. A 355ci Chevy V8 is a mild build intended for daily driving and reliability. It will spin the rear tires if you want to, but is more suited for cruising. Black valve covers and air cleaner with the Chevrolet logo in red look good, as does the chrome alternator. Hoses and lines are clean, and mostly new in appearance. Wiring is clean and neat and carefully loomed. Radiator is a NOS replacement with hi-flow water pump and big shroud to keep things cool on hot days. A 350 Turbo transmission is a stock build, and shifts smooth and clean through all gears. Power steering makes it easy for anyone to drive! The tire clear the fenders all the way to the ground too. Front DISC/Rear DRUM brakes stop the truck easily, and were recent additions. Chassis is painted black, and is not show quality or anything. Just functional. C-Notch looks good, and the truck has airbags on each corner, with shocks that were selected for the drop to give good ride quality at any height. You cannot drive it in the all the way down position. You have to bring it up about 1.75 inches higher than the ground to drive safely. The air ride system has a compressor on its own switch that you turn on under the dash. It fills in about 50 seconds, and the truck is ready to go up or down with ease. Dash mounted switchgear provides front up/down and rear/up down. What more do you need? It goes from the ground to full up position in about 1.5 seconds, and drops in about 2. It is fast. Nice when you hit a red light because you can slam it on the ground and air it back up in an instant. Bags stay inflated, and I parked it with them fully inflated overnight, and they were fully inflated the next morning. No listing or awkwardness, just full front up and down, and full rear up and down. Underside is clean and free of thick goopy cover up spray most people use, so you can see the new parts on the suspension and body mounts and stuff. Bed floor was hacked up to make room for the notch, and the wood raised floor over it is solid enough to hold my 260 lbs without issue. It might not be pretty, but it is safe and functional. Interior was started and is not far from completion, plus, most of the big stuff comes with it! Red and white vintage style upholstery on the seats and door panels is free from rips, tears, seam pulls and damage. It is DIRTY from being driven and used, but it will clean up. We do not do full details on our cars so you can see how they came. I took a damp towel to the side of the seat where it is white, and it cleaned right up as you can see in the pics. A little elbow grease and time and you will be Aces and Eights. Driver side has good looking and function door pull and window roller, and the driver side were removed to be replaced, but lost. It now has a multi-function vice grip in place to use on each of the driver functions. You can grab new ones from 100 places online for cheap. Carpet was newly installed, and is clean, stain, and tear free. It is NOS style from LMC. It is held down on each side by bright and shiny sill plates. Stock style brake and gas pedals. 1980 style GM tilt column is clean, and has function tilt. It has an S10 style steering wheel that looks great and has no issues. A BRAND NEW IN THE BOX Pro-Comp chrome steering wheel is included and is ready for you to install. Dash top is clean and undamaged. Dash front is clean, and has a functional glove box, cut out where the modern style radio was planned to go, and cut outs for A/C vents that were planned as well. Dual 12V outlets are in place. Headlight and wiper switches are in stock location. wipers do not work and are not wired, and the headlamps do not work as they are not wired yet either. A set of brand new headlights is included as well. Gauge cluster in the truck is decent looking, and would just need hooked up I guess, but the prior owner included a BRAND NEW DAKOTA DIGITAL CLUSTER he was going to customize it with, using a solid panel of steel as a backing and all of the brand new senders that are included too. Interior roof and back are painted in red, and there are no upholstered kick panels or anything included. Dome light cover is missing. Not much left to do on the interior, and you can drive and enjoy it while you finish it up to your taste. Inner doors, inner rockers, hinge area, and door surrounds are all clean and solid, and the doors shut clean and easy and seal up good thanks to newer weather stripping on both sides. It starts easily, idles cleanly, does not smoke, and has left only the tiniest dip of oil from the pan on the shop floor since I got it. I have driven it about 30 miles, and it is a killer around town cruiser that will give you the confidence to drive it anywhere. If you want a freeway flyer, you will need a gear change, as the GM 10 bolt feels like it has 3.73 gears or so in it, and prefers to hang out at 55mph, not 75. It handles great, and I have driven it at speed in the normal ride height, and full up with equal success and no issues. Ride is just a lot better aired down a little. Braking is solid and sure, and after 10 minutes behind the wheel, you will almost forget you are driving a bagged truck. Not sure what else to tell you. It is glossy, slick, and wet looking, and shows just as nice in the moonlight as it does in the sun. There are a handful of little normal marks on the car like stone chips, small scuffs, and things like that, but overall it shows really, really nicely as you can see in the 100 photos below. The body on this car is in very good condition, with no rust, rot, or sign of any chicken wire and beer can patch panels. Gaps are better than average, but not Barrett-Jackson quality. Everything opens and closes like it should, and all of the weather stripping and rubber seals are in good to excellent condition all around. Undersides of the doors are in exceptional condition, as is the underside of the trunk and hood. Rockers are clean, neat, and straight. Wheel well trim is in excellent condition, and shows great! Chrome bumpers look fantastic and are almost as good as new with no rust, patina, or issues. Side rocker trim is in above average condition, and a little of your elbow grease and your favorite polish could make them look even better! Headlight buckets are exceptional, as is the custom straight bar grill and front market light surrounds. Nova SS emblems and other badges are in very good condition and look fantastic on the car. Rear end bright work and tail lamp trim is in exceptionally good condition too. Driver side mirror looks and works great, as do the door handles, door and trunk locks, windshield and rear glass surround, and the gutter and vent window trim. Head lamps and tail lamps are recent additions, and they all look and work like new, along with the front and rear signals. It rolls on PACER 521P DRAGSTER wheels front and back that are in very good condition except for the rear center caps, which show some light oxidation. It may just come out when you detail the car, which we have NOT done, but I want to mention it. Tires are practically new Firestone radials up front sized P185/60R15, and a set of equally new looking Mickey Thompson ET STREET tires live out back, size P235/60R15. The stance is great on the car, and it has just the right rake from the performance spring kit and shocks to make it look as mean as it is! Inside, the car has a basically stock looking full interior. Seats are in excellent condition front and back, with no rips, tears, seam pulls, or issues. Front buckets flip forward to allow access to the back, and seat belts cover the laps of everybody inside. Carpeting is in very good condition, and a quick vacuum will make it show even nicer! Rubber mats cover the front and rear, and there are no signs of worn spots, stains, or damage. Kick panels, door panels, rear panels, and rear deck all look very good, and the rear deck houses a pair of speakers that sound fantastic playing whatever you want the Sony AM/FM/CD MP3 unit to play! Headliner is clean and undamaged, but is a little saggy in spots. Heck, you have to have SOMETHING to do on the car besides show it off, right? Dash is clean and undamaged, and holds Sony CD, functional switches for the lights, wipers, the lock-up converter, key switch, 12V cigar lighter, and the heater/fan controls knobs. Ashtray opens closes, and aforementioned CD player is mounted cleanly in the dash as well. Factory gauge cluster is in average condition, with light signs of age, but the fuel gauge works, and it still looks good! Speedo is erratic, but functions, and the odometer is finicky too. SUNPRO was tapped to provide gauges for monitoring the cars vitals, and you get a massive SUPERTACH III with shift light on top of the column, a 3-gauge mount under the dash with TEMP, VOLT, and OIL, and a separate gauge for the supercharger boost. Stock column is clean and nice, as is the steering wheel, but the horn is not functioning at this time. If I can fix it I will, but it does not work. Signals works, and the floor mounted high beam switch does too. Glovebox opens to a clean and cardboard lined storage cubby. A B&M Mega Ratchet shifter is cleanly mounted, and works fantastic! You can really jam through all four speeds up or down without fear using this thing! Jamming through the gears is something you will do a lot of with this car, as the former owner/builder is a rail car drag race driver, and wanted a cool toy for cruise nights and hijinks! According to his records, the engine and transmission were done a little over a year and 700 miles ago, and it was done with the same care they put into the drag cars. There are enough polished, chrome, and billet goodies on it to look good at the car shows, but the real beauty is in how it runs!!! It fires up with ease, has a very nice lope from the cam, and is ready to roll when you are. Keep your foot out of it, and the car is really mild-mannered and easy to cruise in town every day! Jump on it, and you better hold on, because that extra kick of horsepower comes on fast and clean, and will require that you pay attention! The motor sits at about 380rwhp before the blower kicks in, and the 8% boost at WOT pushes you up close to the 500 mark when you need it, and does it all on PUMP GAS!!!! I have driven this car about 120 miles in the last three days, and it is as well behaved as any clean muscle car when you keep your foot out of it. You can cruise at 70mph with the lock-up on, and will only tach about 2,600rpm! It does NOT get hot, and stays at 192 most of the time, with a peak temp of 198 while stuck in traffic waiting to get down to the beach for 30 minutes. I’ll take that any day! Boost is quick and seamless, and the car will hook up really good if you ease into it. Mash the go pedal all at once, and it will spin tire with the best of them until those Mickey T’s find traction. This car is FAST. It has the perfect combination of speed and reliability to make it a Drag Week kind of car, and it is VERY well-built. The prior owner drove it to Orlando before with his family, and said he never even thought twice about the trip! The professionally built 200R4 overdrive shifts great, and has a DEFINITE throw into 2nd gear from the shift kit. Put it in “D” and drive, or manually row through the gears to have even more fun! The tranny is about bulletproof, and was designed to handles the rigors of motors STARTING at 600hp, so it can easily handle any upgrades you may want to do to the motor. Chassis on the car is clean, without any rust through, rot, patch panels, holes, or gunky “rust-proofing” spray hiding everything. Clean, bare metal, and it looks good. Performance springs and shocks were installed all around, along with the brakes and lines noted above. Ride is pretty firm, so the car doesn’t bottom out or wallow, and it gets traction pretty easy because of it. Once hooked, the car aims straight, and thanks to a recent balance and alignment, it holds that line with ease.
