Evoque brings Land Rover's legendary off-road capability to a subcompact SUV. Its wide cabin means plenty of space for those in front with good space in the rear for two more. Its turbocharged engine delivers a good balance between responsiveness and fuel economy thanks to Evoque's relative light weight. Evoque is similar in size to the BMW X1 and European-market Audi Q3 that comprise a new class of premium subcompact sport-utility vehicles. These subcompact SUVs are smaller than the compact SUVs such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, Audi Q5, and Acura RDX. Evoque is wider than all of these, however, a substantial 3.3 inches wider than the BMW X3, for example. As a result, there's more elbow room inside. The Range Rover Evoque comes in two body styles, a five-door and a three-door coupe. The original show car was the coupe, a body style not offered by any competitor. The four-door is the more practical and for that reason much more popular model, though both are essentially the same size. Evoque employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine allied with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated for 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. We found it works very well. It pulls smoothly and has very little throttle lag. The 6-speed automatic, which includes paddle shifters for manual operation, kicks down quickly for passing, and it delivers respectable acceleration performance. Land Rover quotes a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.1 seconds. Evoque's small size and light weight (by class standards) adds up to a decent power-to-weight ratio and respectable fuel economy ratings: 20/28 mpg City/Highway. Evoque stands out in its class for its off-road capability. With a sophisticated Terrain Response system, a full-time four-wheel drive system, good ground clearance, and a short wheelbase, the Evoque can tackle some pretty tough off-road terrain. Most of the others in this class have no off-road pretensions whatsoever, though they can handle primitive roads. Evoque's off-road capability sustains Land Rover's tradition of exceptional go-anywhere proficiency, an area of performance that its competitors lack. Evoque was launched as a 2012 model. For 2013, Evoque adds a new base model called Pure. 2013 Range Rover Evoque models also offer a new Park Assist automated parking feature, off-road navigation information, and a new black Land Rover logo in the grille. The contrasting roof color can also be selected as a stand-alone option on 2013 Evoque models. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The Range Rover Evoque is about the same size as the Audi Q3, which is not sold in the U.S., and just slightly smaller than the BMW X1. Evoque is six inches shorter than the Mercedes-Benz GLK, and more than 10 inches shorter than the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and BMW X3. Diminutive dimensions are a plus in urban environments, as well as in rugged terrain. The Evoque coupe and five-door bodies are nearly identical in dimensions. They ride on the same 104.8-inch wheelbase. They are the same overall length, 171.5 inches. They are the same width: 77.4 inches. Measuring 64.4 inches tall, the five-door models are 1.2 inches taller than the coupes. Evoque's sassy exterior design began with the LRX, a 2-door concept unveiled at the 2008 North American International Automobile Show in Detroit. It was intended primarily as a statement by the company's new design chief, Gerry McGovern. With its back-slanting roofline, rising beltline, and short overhangs, the LRX looked a little like a large scale Mini Cooper, an impression fortified by the option of contrasting roof colors, a design distinction the Mini has used effectively. Uniformly enthusiastic response by show-goers quickly moved the LRX out of the dream car category into production reality. And the production Evoque held very much to the LRX concept. Launched as a 2012 model, the Evoque is leading a redesign of the entire Land Rover lineup. An all-new Range Rover followed as a 2013 model and the Range Rover Sport is following as a 2014. The Evoque has the same 108.4-inch wheelbase as the Land Rover LR2. At 171.5 inches long, however, the Evoque is shorter than the LR2, its sloping roofline is some four to five inches lower, and it is distinctly wider, 77.4 inches versus 75.1. With its relatively low roofline, wide stance, not much vehicle extending beyond the axles at either end, the Evoque has an eager, sporty look that's unique in this class. The minimum ground clearance, 8.5 inches, is at the front axle; rear axle clearance adds an inch, and the Evoque can safely ford water up to 19.7 inches deep without inhaling any of it. The downside to the Evoque's dramatic styling is at the rear of the vehicle. The sloping roofline and ascending beltline conspire to compromise rearward vision, and sightlines in the rear quarters are limited. On the other hand, if style wasn't important, we'd all be driving cars that look like the old Checker Marathon taxicabs. For someone who wants a compact luxury crossover that's a departure from the rectilinear mainstream, the Evoque merits a longer look. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression Land Rover's Range Rover Evoque uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated for 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It pulls smoothly and has very little throttle lag. The 6-speed automatic, which includes paddle shifters for manual operation, kicks down quickly for passing. Acceleration performance is neither lethargic nor particularly quick. Land Rover quotes a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.1 seconds, which is respectable and certainly enough to keep up with urban traffic. By comparison, the BMW X1 xDrive28i can perform this feat in 6.3 seconds with its 240-hp 2.0-liter turbo four. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg City/Highway. The BMW X1 xDrive28i is rated 22/30 mpg. Evoque's turbocharger builds boost quickly, so it takes some practice to achieve smooth launches. We also found that it's not too difficult to confuse the computer controlling the 6-speed automatic; its electronic brain seems to balk at abrupt changes in throttle position. These are traits that become transparent to an owner over time, but there's room for improvement here. In really rough stuff, its Land Rover credentials shine. With its short front and rear overhangs (i.e., not much vehicle protruding beyond the front or rear axles), the Evoque has far more off-road ability than you might expect based on the looks. The four-wheel-drive system employs a Haldex center differential that automatically apportions torque front or rear according to grip. It's totally transparent and very effective. Off-roading is also aided by the Terrain Response system. It has settings for Mud-Ruts, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Sand and General Driving, and it works with several vehicle systems to help the Evoque conquer almost anything the world throws at it. For example, the throttle is dulled and the transmissions shifts up sooner in Grass-Gravel-Snow, while the throttle is aggressive and the transmission holds gears longer in Sand mode. While the Evoque is the most capable off-roader in its class, it isn't as accomplished as other Land Rovers due to a relatively low (for Land Rover) ground clearance, no low-range gearing, and a lack of locking differentials. The Evoque balances its off-road capability with impressive on-road dynamics. Suspension tuning is firm, and that trait, combined with the rational ride height give the Evoque a lively sense of agility without any apparent sacrifice in comfort. Directional changes are brisk, body roll is limited, brake feel is firm, and the words car-like driving experience certainly apply here. When equipped with the optional MagnaRide suspension, Terrain Response also includes a Dynamic mode that firms up the shocks in corners to further reduce body lean. If there's any soft spot in the Evoque's dynamic credentials, it's at the wheel. Range Rover has adopted a new electric-assist steering system that varies effort as a function of speed. It's quick, just 2.5 turns lock-to-lock, but it's also lacking in road feel. That's not a good combination. But it's another of those little quirks that owners adapt to over time. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Evoque is handsomely appointed and attractively designed. The materials are quite nice, but long-time Range Rover buyers may not think they live up to the name. While the dashboard, door panels and armrests are all soft to the touch, they don't match the quality of the Range Rover flagship model ($83,500), and everything from the glovebox down is hard plastic. The interior quality is about what we expect for this class, but it's not appreciably better than the competition and it doesn't quite live up to the high prices Land Rover asks for the Evoque. The control layout is effective and fairly easy to use. Land Rover provides a couple of five-way controllers on the steering wheel to control the radio and trip computer, and the low-set climate controls and rotating gearshift are self-explanatory. The center console angles up toward the center stack, absorbing some of its controls and making them easier to reach. An 8-inch screen dominates the dashboard offering an array of telematics. Digging through the controls on this screen may take some time, but it is intuitive. An available five-camera system shows a 360-degree view on this screen; it is quite handy in tight places. For 2013, Land Rover adds off-road information to this screen on models equipped with navigation. It provides such information as topographic contour lines, latitude, longitude, altitude, trace, waypoint, and compass functions, all of which will be appreciated by experienced off-roaders. Interior roominess is surprising given the stylish, sloping roof. There's good rear-seat headroom, even in the three-door coupe. The five-door has 39.7 inches of headroom in the back seats, while the Evoque Coupe has 38.2 inches. Passengers over six-foot-two might find their hair brushing the ceiling, but leg room is plentiful and the brawny width creates plenty of room, front and rear, to squirm around on longish trips. Evoque is comfortable for four. It seats five and has seat belts for five, but its rear center seat is a spot you'd reserve for people you didn't like. It's comfortable for four, not five. The front seats are supportive enough to hold occupants in place during aggressive driving and they offer lots of room. The five-door has 40.3 inches of headroom, and the coupe has 39.1 inches, both of which are plenty for just about anyone. Cargo capacity is 20.3 cubic feet of stowage with the rear seats up, 51 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. That's slightly better than maximum cargo capacity for the BMW X1. These subcompact SUVs offer less cargo capacity than that of the larger, compact SUVs. The Mercedes GLK-Class, the next size up, offers 23 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 55 cubic feet with the seats folded down, two more boxes measuring one foot in all dimensions. The Evoque Coupe has less space, with 19.4 cubic feet with the seats up and 47.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The Dodge Challenger is a modern interpretation of the classic American muscle car. Unlike the unrefined pony cars of yesteryear, the Challenger features the fuel efficiency, safety, handling, technology and build quality expected in a contemporary coupe. The Challenger is available in three trims: base, R/T and SRT8. The base trim is powered by a new 305-hp 3.6-litre V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The R/T's 5.7-liter HEMI V8 features 372 horsepower with the standard 5-speed automatic with sequential shift control, and 376 horsepower with the optional 6-speed manual. The SRT8's 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine is mated to a standard 5-speed automatic with sequential shift control or an optional 6-speed manual, and produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Touring suspension, traction control, stability control, 17-inch alloy wheels, KeylessGo entry system, air conditioning and power driver's seat are standard equipment on the base trim, and the R/T adds performance-tuned suspension and steering, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a body color spoiler. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Dodge Challenger brings muscle car performance and styling to everyday driving. It's an enjoyable car to drive. The Challenger harkens back to 1970, and the current generation, launched as a 2008 model, amuses and delights us. The 2013 model year brings a new Rallye Redline appearance package, updates to the optional navigation system and, for the top-performing SRT8 392, standard launch control, three-mode adaptive damping, and five new paint colors. The base Challenger SXT comes reasonably well equipped and gives you the Challenger look and room for a modest price. Its 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 produces 305 horsepower and 268 foot-pounds of torque. But the Challenger is a big car, so even with a 5-speed automatic fuel economy is not its forte: Challenger is EPA rated 18/27 mpg City/Highway. The Challenger R/T rumbles with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The V8 is rated at 372 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque with the 5-speed automatic, or 375 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque with the standard 6-speed manual. The Hemi uses a multiple displacement feature that switches off cylinders to save fuel, but EPA ratings are no better than 16/25 mpg. We think the Challenger R/T is a sweet spot in the lineup. It can be used as a daily driver with less intensity than the SRT8 (and considerable cost savings) yet it's sportier and more fun than the SXT. Challenger R/T is often compared with the Mustang GT and Camaro SS, although Challenger is a bigger car and a more comfortable cruiser. The Challenger SRT8 392 is named after its Hemi V8's cubic-inch displacement (even though it's actually 391) and that of the legendary Hemi 392 engine of the late 1950s. The 2013 Challenger SRT8 392 comes with a 470-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that also uses cylinder deactivation technology. EPA ratings are 14/23 mpg. Additional features include a heated steering wheel, three-mode adaptive damping and launch control. The SRT8 also comes with big Brembo brakes, the firmest suspension and a limited-slip rear differential. We found the SRT8 392 fast and stable. It's ready to go to the track yet we think it's compliant and controlled enough that it you can drive it daily or just for weekend cruises. The Challenger is an enjoyable muscle car. Driving it brings a smile to our face and it seems to light up others as well. Everyone seems to like the Challenger. We've driven all the models and like all of them. They all have their own merits but there are distinctions. The cabin is mundane. Like muscle cars of the past, the Challenger is based on a sedan (the Charger) and the interior borrows heavily from existing materials. The 392 sport seats hold you in place in corners and are designed to accommodate large drivers. Climbing into the back seat is a chore but once in we found it's fine for children, teens and the occasional adults. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Faithful to the 1970-vintage Challenger that powered its creation, the Challenger features a cool design that should stand the test of time. It is unanimously praised by on-lookers as a cool-looking car and is as faithful to the original as has been done in recent years. Part of the Challenger's appeal comes from its commanding presence. Many of the Challenger's parts, systems and structures are shared with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans. It's a big car, just two inches shorter than the Charger but wider and lower. The Challenger is also about nine inches longer than the Ford Mustang, and seven inches longer than the Chevrolet Camaro. Unlike most new cars, the maximum width is carried well out to the ends resulting in a broad, menacing car. The very wide, horizontal grille, spoilers and taillamps accentuate the width, as does a turret-like roof and window treatment, and the haunches over the rear wheels where the roof fairs into the trunk and the character line kicks up. The proportions all seem just right, from the carrier-deck expanse of flat hood larger than most modern pickups, to the foot-high side glass and dark lower body trim, and into the massive rear roof pillars. The major lines are only part of the equation, with details just as well executed. The four round lamp units and deeply inset grille of the original are still there, though now the inside lights are turn signals and the outer pair the headlamps. Where signals rode below the bumper on the '70 this one has fog lamps, and careful sculpting has maintained the classic look without destroying aerodynamic efficiency. From the side, the SRT8 392's 20-inch wheels frame bright red brake calipers and slotted discs, filling large fender openings that are creased along the edges. Hood scoops carry Hemi badges on V8 cars and are functional in that cool air goes in or warm air vents to the atmosphere, but they do not feed cold air straight into the engine; the ducts in the spoiler direct cooling air to the front brakes and small winglets at the front wheel openings better refine airflow. The fixed side rear windows do not allow the full open hardtop of the original with its frameless doors but in a nod to that look Dodge kept the pillars behind the glass so they aren't so obvious. A bright fuel filler cap finishes off the driver's side. The door handles look retro and stylish, but we found them hard to grab. Out back, there is a full-width panel of red lights with a pair of backup lights wedged in the middle, along with chrome DODGE lettering in a font right out of the 1970s. While only the outer pairs of bulbs light for brake and turn functions, the entire width is used for taillights. All models have dual chrome rectangular exhaust outlets in the lower bumper. Paintwork on the cars we saw was very good, as it must be, given the vast surfaces lacking any ornamentation or style lines. The paint feels smooth to the touch and looks great. But, at least in V8 form, the Challenger is a muscle car that many insist requires stripes, so plenty of wallpaper is optional. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Dodge Challenger is a big, rear-wheel-drive car and feels like it. Yet the further up the power and performance scale you go, the lighter it seems to feel. You won't mistake it for driving the lighter Mustang, or even the also-too-heavy Camaro. Other 2+2 two-doors in a similar price range, such as a BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G37 or Audi A5, aren't going to be cross-shopped because they're different animals. And it's okay to think of the Challenger SRT8 392 as an animal: A well-behaved animal, but always ready to prowl for prey. The Challenger SXT drives a lot like the Charger because the Challenger is based on the Charger with four inches taken out between the front and rear wheels. The 3.6-liter V6 has enough oomph to keep up with brisk traffic, and pass without too much fuss. Given the Challenger's extra 300 pounds, it doesn't keep up with a V6 Mustang; heck, a performance package V6 Mustang gives a Challenger R/T a fight. The next step up is the Challenger R/T. The R/T features a Hemi V8 producing 375 horsepower, along with a firmer suspension, bigger brakes and tires, and a choice of a hefty-shifting 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. One could arguably have the most fun with the R/T. There's no need to park it in the winter and no miserable ride just because the roads are bad. The R/T goes quite well, with a 0 to 60 mph time less than six seconds. That power comes on strong, but we found it runs out quickly, as the redline is only 5800 rpm. That means drivers choosing the manual will have to pay attention and not be seduced by the Hemi's soundtrack. Sixth gear doesn't do much on the track or around town. It's strictly a highway gear meant for fuel economy; in sixth, the R/T cruises like a pussy cat, churning 1800 rpm at 80 mph. The $13,000 saved versus an SRT8 392 would buy brake/suspension/tire upgrades to your preference and specification, or a serious engine upgrade. The SRT8 392 has 470 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque on tap, making it a potent car. Zero to 60 mph is in the high four-second range, the car can cover the quarter-mile in the high 12s and the manual runs past 170 mph. The torque really makes the SRT8 392 leap forward when pushed. It's easy to make an SRT8 392 go fast, you just stand on the gas and point it where you want it to go. Traction control does a very good job of turning controlled wheelspin into thrust, making the SRT8 392 easier to launch than most high-performance manual-transmission cars. There's a solid feel to quick upshifts and it works better the harder you push it. At the other end of the straightaway, the SRT8's big brakes do a commendable job of slowing the pace, just a bit off some benchmark lighter coupes. There is a lot of travel in the brake pedal so initial bite might not be what you expect but keep pushing and you'll stop quickly. The 2013 SRT8 392 comes with standard Launch Control. The system works somewhat differently on manual and automatic cars, but either way the driver activates it by coming to complete stop, pressing the ESC button twice and then flooring the gas. With the 5-speed automatic the system holds the engine to an ideal 1825 rpm until the driver releases the brake; on manual cars the launch rpm is adjustable from 2500-4500 via the information center’s touch screen. Immediately after launch, traction control takes over to limit wheelspin. When cruising, the Challenger is civilized. There is authority in the exhaust note but it doesn't sound like authority grabbed the bullhorn until you get into the gas and are rewarded with a satisfying rumble that becomes more howl as it winds up; manual gearbox cars sound like they use different mufflers and have a deeper tone. The automatic delivers crisp-not-jarring upshifts and gets out of first gear in a hurry unless you are hard on the gas. It will downshift once, or again, if you give it the boot. The Challenger is too big and heavy to merit any consideration as a sports car and isn't ideal for tossing around on tight racetracks or mountain roads. On the 2013 SRT8, at least, Bilstein adaptive damping offers Auto, Sport, and Track modes, giving the driver a choice of shock settings for more comfortable commutes or fully buttoned down for flogging a winding road. It is impressively good given the Challenger’s size and weight. The Challenger is big and nose-heavy, and the SRT8 rolls into a cornering set with minimal body roll and mid-corner correction. The grip from the optional Goodyear Eagle F1 tires is substantial and the Challenger is surprisingly balanced in turns. In fact, it's quite easy to steer the SRT8 392 with the rear wheels or make it drift. That speaks well to the job Dodge and SRT did with the suspension geometry. The R/T model, by comparison, acts very much the same way, but its reactions are a bit slower. Power isn't as sudden, steering isn't as sharp, the brakes aren't as strong, and the weight doesn't transfer as quickly. It is possible to upset both versions, but you really have to be working at it or totally inattentive. Driven smoothly you will rarely be reigned in by the electronic stability control. And the stability control can be completely turned off on manual transmission cars if it becomes a nuisance on the race track. Ride quality in the SRT8 392 is decent, thanks not only to the Bilstein three-way dampers but also the standard running gear (lightweight forged aluminum wheels, aluminum-intensive independent suspension all around) that also contributes to its impressive performance. The SRT8 is smooth and quiet enough to cover long distances, and it deals well with even marginal roads. On sheet-flat roads it won't enjoy a significant advantage over the Mustang's solid rear axle, but as the surface gets rougher the Challenger's independent rear suspension should cope better even though the car is heavier. The Challenger's mass becomes most apparent under heavy braking on a rippled road, where many lesser-tuned lighter cars have the same issue. Even in the SRT8 392, the steering feel isn't as precise as the Mustang's steering. The steering is quick enough, with less than three turns lock-to-lock, but you feel it's dealing with more weight. Maneuverability at low speeds is par for a big car. The SRT8 392's bi-xenon headlights allow it to be safely driven at freeway speeds or along rural highways in no-moon darkness. And with a bit of German in the bloodlines, the fog lights can be used without the headlights, at least where it's legal to light up the road instead of the fog. With aerodynamics ever-more-frequently dictating shape and wind patterns, it was refreshing to find the new Challenger can comfortably be driven windows down without buffeting the occupants or thundering their ears. Admit it, at least part of the reason you buy one will be to be seen or listen to that exhaust note. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The interior harkens back to the muscle car era in that many muscle cars were born of generic sedans and had similar interiors. The Challenger also mimics Dodge and Chrysler sedans of a few years ago, though with some nicer materials. The cabin appears functional and well put together, but it has the least emotional impact of any aspect of the car. To preserve the ensconced feeling, the headliner is a dark material. In fact almost everything is dark. In the SRT8 392 we tested the monotony was broken with chrome highlights on the door handles, control knobs and gauge bezels; light-faced instruments; semi-glossy carbon-fiber-look center panel trim; bright leather seats; and a big chrome band around the shifter that bounced sun glare all over and the exclusive SRT steering wheel with aluminum trim. Virtually everything else inside was dark. While a race-inspired interior is one of the SRT division's major criteria, the primary inspiration here is manifested in the front seats and fat-rim, flat-bottom steering wheel. The contrast-stitched, heavily bolstered buckets in the SRT8 392, with their leather outers and velour inserts, do an excellent job of keeping you in place. However, unlike many so-called sport seats, these do not feel overly firm, though the driver lumbar can tune out some squish in the backrest. Nor are they confining. Big bodies are more prone to be comfortable here than in a BMW or Infiniti sport seat. Front-seat headrests are adjustable for height only and the seatbelt loop goes with it to avoid belt chafing. The rear seat is quite comfortable and roomier than most would expect. The back seat can accommodate two plus someone little in the middle. Back-seat riders get only moderate legroom, however, caused by the very thick front-seat backrests. The rear bench seat has three shoulder belts, baby seat anchors, a fold-down armrest with cupholders, coat hooks, two central vents, and two integral headrests. The seat folds down to expand the trunk, but the front seat must not be set back too far to be able to flip the seatback down. On the minus side, the only lighting in the back seat area is in the front seat backrests. The side panels are mostly plastic, the windows are fixed, and getting in is a nuisance; the passenger seat has a lift lever that tilts the backrest and slides the seat forward but it doesn't automatically return to its previous position. It may be large, but it is a two-door coupe. A manual tilt/telescope steering column allows plenty of adjustment and a view of the instruments. The SRT has a smaller heated steering wheel with leather wrapping and metal trim that is more appropriate for a car with the Challenger's sporting intentions. It's smaller, sportier and feels better than the wheel it replaced. The fingertip button arrangement is easy to use. Lights and the trunk release are to the left on the dash, and the multi-function stalk on the left shows evidence of Dodge's old relationship with Mercedes. It has auto-blink signals (one touch gives 3 blinks, a feature that requires some getting used to or you can disable), flash-to-pass high beams, and washer/wiper controls that require you to take your hand off the wheel to activate them. Cruise control is on a smaller stalk to lower right. Gauges include fuel on the left (which descends progressively more quickly as the tank is consumed), tachometer, speedometer (140, 160, 180 mph on SXT, R/T, SRT8 respectively) and numbered coolant temperature. All of the gauges are light-faced with dark numbers, and at night they have blue-green illumination that matches the various digital displays. A message center in the tachometer on SRT8 392 models displays 128 functions, ranging from radio station to performance data. You can do your own 0-60 mph, eighth-mile, quarter-mile, braking distance and lateral acceleration tests. It does fuel economy, too, but we found ourselves happier not looking at that. Keyless Go on some models is a no-ignition-switch setup that uses a simple pushbutton to start the car. Once inside the car, it's easy to misplace or forget the key because there's no slot for it and the sport seats don't encourage keeping it in your pocket. Two levels of navigation are offered. The more economical Garmin system has been massaged for 2013 with improved functionality and Dodge-specific graphics, while the Premium Navigation system remains unchanged. Both require the 368-watt Sound Group II package, and both come with a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold thousands of music files. The top-level Premium Audio system upgrades to 900 watts and 18 Harman Kardon speakers, which clearly outdoes any 1970 quadraphonic 8-track. Led Zeppelin didn't sound this good live in 1970. Standard three-ring single-zone climate control is lower on the panel, with switches for stability control, hazard lights, seat heaters and such along the bottom. All of the controls except for the door lock and window switches are illuminated. The center console has a mild lateral slope to the driver, with a small bin ahead of the shifter, two illuminated cupholders behind it, and space under the sliding-top center armrest. The glovebox is typical but the door pockets are split with a larger pocket at the front edge and a smaller pocket near the rear edge. The passenger door armrest has a small bin that might hold an MP3 player or pack of smokes, at least until a hard right turn. Although the A-pillars are wide, the driver sits far enough away from the windshield to avoid forward blind spots. With the seat positioned low to the glass line, you can see most of the hood. The view to the rear is fairly good, too, because the side glass goes well back and the rear window allows a full view in the mirror. However, the wide rear pillars block your view when backing out of parking spots; a rearview camera would be helpful and add a measure of safety. Also don't pull too far forward at intersections with overhead traffic signals or the roofline may get in your way. When it comes to visibility, the Mustang has it over the Challenger but the Camaro is worse than both. Trunk space won't be an issue. At more than 16 cubic feet, it matches the Dodge Charger and clearly betters the Mustang, Camaro, and Audi A5. Under the floor you'll find the standard tire-inflator kit (compact spare optional only on SXT and R/T), battery and a vinyl-album-sized bin sure to be filled with a nitrous bottle sooner or later. The 60/40 split rear seat folds wide side on the driver's side. The subwoofers are out of the way, a good thing because there are no tie-downs here so contents will shift. And like an old Challenger, you have to pick up the cargo nearly three feet off the ground, and then over a foot of bodywork before dropping it into the trunk. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary Dodge Challenger boasts a distinctive look that attracts a lot of attention and positive comments. The V6-powered Challenger SXT comes with a moderate price and a more than adequate engine, while the V8-powered Challenger R/T is a good performance value. The Challenger SRT8 392 is the ultimate performance version. Regardless, the Challenger avoids the compromised rear seat and trunk of most coupes because of its size. It's too big and heavy to be a true sport coupe, but it carries that bulk fairly well when pushed. In Hemi Orange Pearl you won't own the road but it will feel like you do. This is the cleanest one I have ever seen . It literally looks like it has 50 miles. And for some odd reason it's the fastest one i've driven, by far ------------- ------------------------------ ------------------------------------------2012 BMW <750L is the automotive incarnation of Billy Bob Thornton. Smooth, refined, and highly intelligent when necessary, but rowdy and rude when business is done. And that, for me, is a near-perfect mix. Or, to put it another way, the 750Li is a reverse mullet: party in the front, business in the back. In the driver's seat, once you engage the Sport+ mode and pull the gear selector over into Sport, things get very interesting--and they get even more so if you hold down the traction control button, putting the big limo into full DSC-OFF mode, its most focused and free setting. With DSC-OFF engaged, you can power brake and roast the tires, slide tail-out around any curve of suitable radius for its frigate-like length, or toss the car back and forth like a super-sized sports car with nary a complaint from the car's electronics. In this mode, the big 7er is surprisingly competent , handling like a car 75 percent of its size. This is the party in the front. Swing wide the huge rear door and step into the rear cabin, and it's a whole different universe in the L model over the model. Even without the full executive treatment in the rear seat (our test car had very few upgrades in the back) it's a cavernous space, complete with wedge-shaped rests to support your feet. And it'll fit NBA-sized legs and feet, though headroom may run a bit short at the longer end of the spectrum. The moonroof does an admirable job of staying out of the way thanks to a large scallop in the ceiling just above the rear passengers' heads, but lean too far forward and the tall-torsoed six-foot-plus crowd may encounter some unwelcome cranial resistance. But even so, there's ample shoulder and hip room, plenty of light (and shades to quell it) and enough panache to make negotiating a major share trade or setting the next tee time not just possible, but pleasurable. Materials, finish, and quality of the rear seat area is impeccable, even at the $98,900 price point our car stickered at. This is the business in the back. Needless to say, we like to party, so the car stayed in Sport, Sport+ or DSC-OFF mode most of its week with us. That may have contributed to the rather miserable 15.6 mpg average we saw, though a heavy right foot and the endless reward of really pushing the 750Li likely contributed as well. So what's the deal with all these Sport, Sport+ settings I'm on about? It's the way BMW handles mapping the adjustable damping system and the tuning of the six-speed automatic gearbox. Settings include: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and the secret setting, DSC-OFF. You can access the four standard settings by pressing the corresponding toggle switch in the center console, beside the gear selector. To access DSC-OFF, simply hold the traction control button until the navigation system begins to alert you to the import of your decision. Similarly, the transmission can be bumped from standard Drive mode into Sport by a slide of the gear selector to the left. Once there, you can choose to let the computer do the job for you or bump forward to shift down and pull back to shift up. Those who've attempted to drive American and Japanese manu-matics hard will recognize that BMW has gotten it right; none of the bump forward to upshift/backward to downshift nonsense. In the end, though, the point may be moot--unless you're really pushing the car to its limits, automatic mode is just as quick as manual mode, and perhaps quicker as you obviate the tap on the rev limiter brought on by a late upshift. The 750Li's electronics match revs on downshifts in either drive or manual, though the lack of paddle shifters on the steering wheel remind you you're driving an executive limo, not a sports car. The fact that you may need reminding is real though--with the M Sport package in full sporting mode, the big 7er handles much more nimbly than its curb weight or wheelbase would suggest. The meaty steering wheel weights up nicely, the not-too-aggressively-bolstered seats hug you, and it rotates and transitions like a sporty 3-Series running at 90 percent pace. From the outside, the 2012 750Li cuts a clean figure, freed from the styling of previous models. It manages to pack its proportions into a package that looks leaner and lower than its true size should allow, escaping awkwardness from any angle. Despite the optical illusion, its size is undeniable when parking--it's wide, long and those extended rear doors don't want to see a steel canyon of Tahoes or Expeditions alongside. After a week behind the wheel of the big Bimmer, we understand why we see so many of these cars piloted by a nattily-attired professional as the rear seat sits empty. While Mercedes, Audi and Lexus may offer slightly better pricing, the 750Li is the driver's car of the bunch. ------------------------------- BMW’s new N63, 4.4-litre twin-turbo, direct injected mill, the same engine being released iin the 750i. With 298Kw/400hp and a hefty 450 pounf /feet of torque BMW's twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six has been a rousing success, with nothing less than a Wards 10 Best Engines award sitting in its trophy case. The praise is understandable and well-deserved, as the engine uses a combination of forced induction and direct injection to serve up a torque curve that's far beefier and flatter than what should be expected from a engine of its size. So what next for the propeller brand? Simple -- take similar technology, add it to the company's 4.4L V8 and toss in a dash of unconventional packaging to make everything fit. BMW put its latest jewel on display at the 20011 Detroit Auto Show, and we snapped some shots of it to give you an idea of why this engine is so special. We've included those photos in one of our galleries, and below the fold, we've thrown in a few observations. Undoubtedly, the most unique feature of the 4.4L TT is the packaging of the turbochargers in the valley between the cylinder banks. This is made possible by the swapping of the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder heads, with the exhaust now exiting towards the middle. This allows the turbochargers to be mounted in the valley with minimal plumbing, which means less bulk, lower weight and better efficiency. Immediately after exiting the turbochargers, the exhaust gases enter the catalysts. It's important to keep the cats as close as possible, as the exhaust carries heat that is required for the converters' operation. Packaging the cats in this location underneath the hood must present some interesting insulation challenges! Instead of expensive variable-vane technology, each turbo makes use of fixed geometry and relatively simple wastegates. Each compressor is fed via a black oval-shaped duct, as shown above. Between the compressor outlet and the intake manifolds lie a pair of air-to-water intercoolers, one for each bank. Such an intercooler reduces packaging volume and tract length compared to a top- or front-mounted air-to-air heat exchanger. Immediately downstream of the intercoolers lie a pair of electronically-controlled throttle bodies. Below each centrally-located coil-on-plug (COP) assembly resides the direct injector, along with the feed lines and fuel rail. It's presumed that piezoelectric injectors are employed here, which are fast enough to allow several injection events per combustion cycle. Each fuel rail gets its own fuel-pressure regulator. The operating system of this system is yet unknown, but we're guessing that it's similar to the 200 bar (3000 PSI) that is used in the engine's direct-injection predecessors. Dished pistons are used to lower the compression ratio, with a compact ring package to reduce crevice volume and frictional losses. The net effect is a peak of 400 HP, with 450 lb-ft of torque delivered between 1750 and 4500 RPM. In a sport sedan such as the 7 Series, this engine will likely erase fond memories of the musclecar era, and even in portly SUVs such as BMW's X5 and X6, the result should still be rather impressive. ---------------------------------------------------- Behind the Wheel | 2009 BMW 750i and 750Li Casting Out Devils, BMW’s 7 Becomes More Heavenly Compared with sumptuous but conservative competitors — the Mercedes S-Class, the Jaguar XJ and the Lexus LS 460 — the BMW says of its owner, “My hair may be gray and I may wear funny hats in Boca Raton, but you won’t catch medoing 55 in the fast lane.” Unfortunately, the delights of the 7 Series, which include blowing away rosy-cheeked lads in Subarus, had become weighed down by baggage. The often-derided iDrive controls made it hard to tune in Neil Diamond without wanting to punch out the display screen. And while I usually have no beef with icy Germanic interiors, the outgoing model took the dominatrix-in-Berlin theme too far; no flagship luxury sedan should make people suffer for their driving pleasure. Cabin demerits included obtuse controls and rigidly minimalist appointments. That’s why the 2009 7 Series is such a double delight, whether in standard (750i) or stretched (750Li) guise. Yes, the new 7 is faster, nimbler and more fun than any plus-size sedan has a right to be. But with all due respect to the Bavarian engineering on display, that’s almost an easy birdie on the BMW course. More surprisingly, the big BMW has ditched its misanthropic ways to embrace anyone in its rich presence. And rich it is, with the 750i starting at $81,125 and the 750Li topping out around $112,000 with every conceivable,option. The 7 arrives just as Chris Bangle — that’s his picture with the dictionary citation for “controversial” — departs BMW after 16 years as design director. And it was the last-generation 7 Series of 2002 that spawned the term “Bangle butt,” a snarky characterization of that car’s jutting, coffin-lidded trunk. In Mr. Bangle’s defense, talk is cheap and BMWs are not. Actual buyers, as opposed to dittoheads on car blogs, made the departing model the best-selling 7 ever. In the same vein, be wary of revisionist nonsense suggesting that the new 7 succeeds because it erases Bangle’s memory faster than a Communist re-education camp. Those willing to remove their anti-Bangle blinders will see the latest car as a clear evolution of his work. Certainly the 7 looks better, yet it is no mea culpa. All the cues are there — even a slimmed-down Bangle booty — but they are better integrated. I began my testing in the short-wheelbase 750i, whose ski-sack pass-through made it ideal for a quick ski trip to Vermont. Later, I switched to a glossy black 750Li. The preschool ease with which I linked my Bluetooth phone, address book and iPod was the first omen of a great road trip. The new iDrive, defying expectations, has gone from worst to first in the wacky world of rotary-knob systems controllers. It essentially mimics the best features of Audi’s M.M.I. system and in some cases improves on them. Nearly all the infuriation is banished — buried submenus, illogical functions, stingy displays, even the gummy knob itself. Toggling between menus is now a simple left-or-right operation; call up a radio station, press the downsized iDrive button and file it as a preset. At 10.2 inches, the high-resolution display screen may be the largest I’ve seen in a production car, big enough to contain split-screen maps plus a submenu. Ease of use extends to Driving Dynamics Control, with simple up-down buttons to range through four settings (from comfort to sport plus) that urge the steering, suspension, throttle and transmission to ever-snappier levels of performance. The 7 is still a driver-first car, with basic-yet-gorgeous analog gauges and a serious mien. But this 7 is less stark inside, with warmer finishes like a flowing wedge of wood along the instrument panel. Seats are a long-haul fantasy, with built-in heating and ventilation, an optional massager and an additional adjustment for the upper seatback. As before, storage is meager up front, and at 14 cubic feet, the trunk is fairly nice in the big-car league. The rear seat is the Rorschach test for owners. Stretched 5.5 inches, the long-wheelbase 750Li has a lounge-worth y 44.3 inches of rear legroom, two to three inches more than key rivals. The 750i is nearly 82 pounds lighter, but loses nearly seven inches of rear kneeroom. In the past, I’ve favored the short-bus 7, but now I’m inclined to go long: the 750Li gives up almost nothing in performance, so at these prices you may as well treat passengers to the decadent back seat with its cute carpeted footrests. And this time, BMW created a length-disguising roof for the 750Li. The LWB is the way to go Yawn..That's why you have adaptive BiXenon headlights and active high beam with But on a darkened two-lane road in Vermont, the new high-beam-assist feature proved pretty slick. Once activated, the system automatically dimmed the brights when it sensed an approaching car, then flicked them back on the instant the car passed. Allow me also to praise the toasty heated steering wheel, a feature that I find more beneficial than seat warmers That sport package also adds 19-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel and active antisway bars to reduce body lean. The only AWOL option is the full Internet access available to Europeans. For now, liability concerns will keep Americans from posting chocolate-covered-baby photos on Facebook while at the wheel. But next year, BMW will roll out the first all-wheel -drive 7-Series in the model’s five generations. Like the compact 3 Series sedan and even tinier 1 Series coupe, the 7 has adopted dual turbochargers to bump up the power from a relatively small engine. Here, a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 develops 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque — much more torque than any direct rival makes, and only 15 pound-feet less than Mercedes’s S63 AMG, a $135,000 hot rod with a monumental 6.2-liter V-8. Drop the hammer and the 750i blows from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds. Yes, this four-wheel McMansion is faster than the much smaller 335i, and quicker than the previous 12-cylinder 760Li, too. Alas, the mileage is estimated at 17 m.p.g. in town, 24 on the highway, for the 750Li. A slick double-wishbone front suspension, a first for a BMW passenger car, combines with computerized shock absorbers. The longer model adds a standard self-leveling rear suspension. During a four-hour jaunt through the Hudson River Valley, I thought of all those digital zeroes and ones whirring around to increase the 7’s uncanny capability. Yet the car still feels communicative and natural, not an automaton. Pricier sedans like the Bentley Flying Spur and Mercedes S-Class AMG, pushed near their limits, still betray some 2.5-ton insecurity, a sense that it’s time to back off and drive as if you’re in a normal car. The BMW is nothing like that. In normal or comfort mode, the car is cushy, yet seriously sporty. Move up to sport or sport-plus mode, and the BMW hustles with almost indescribable brio. The only big sedan that feels almost this athletic is the Maserati Quattroporte, which also costs significantly more. Of course, the 7 remains the most expensive BMW, one reason you rarely see a 20- or 30-something at the wheel.
