One might argue that it was Subaru, with its all-weather, all-wheel drive wagons that fueled the current explosion of car-based sport-utility vehicles. But, as is often the case with a trendsetter, tiny Subaru has struggled to keep up with their larger competitors, who can out spend, out market, and out power them. But now, Subaru is doing what any other plucky little company would do, fighting back. Indeed, the latest Outback wagon is loaded for bear. Actually, it’s loaded with a whole lot more engine. More specifically, Subaru’s first six- cylinder engine since the out-of-character SVX sports-coupe disappeared 4 years ago. But this one is all-new, and will initially be offered in only two upscale models, the flagship Outback H6-3.0 VDC, and the Outback H6-3.0 L.L. Bean Edition. Fitting the six, which uses the same horizontally-opposed layout as Subaru’s 4-bangers, into the Outback’s engine bay actually proved to be a simple process. The new 3.0-liter boxer engine is less than an inch longer than the standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, yet produces 28% more power. The robust ratings are 212 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque, thanks to variable- stage intake and exhaust systems, dual-overhead cams, and 4-valves-per-cylinder. Connected to it is a 4-speed automatic transmission, with a lock-up torque converter. And beyond that, on the VDC, to Subaru’s newest Variable Torque Distribution full-time all- wheel-drive system. It uses a multi-plate transfer clutch, and planetary gear type center differential, plus traction control, to make sure torque goes to the wheels that need it quick. But the VDC in this Outback’s name is more than just a trio of letters. It stands for Vehicle Dynamic Control, Subaru’s first electronic stability system. VDC’s yaw and steering sensors work with the all-wheel drive system, traction control, and ABS brakes, to help correct over and understeer. In track testing, the H6 engine and high tech drive and handling hardware all work in an impressively cohesive manner. 0 to 60 passes in 8.3-seconds, and the 1/4 mile in 16.3-seconds at 86 miles-per-hour. That’s not only almost a second faster than the Outback-4, but with gobs more pull from 3,600 to 6,200 rpm. Transmission gearing also seems to be spot on. But, as our friends at AMI Auto World Weekly noted, more oomph is not the powertrain’s only plus: “As welcome as the extra power is, the primary benefit of the new engine is smoothness”. As for mileage numbers, the 6-cylinder Outback is EPA rated at 20 city/27 highway. We averaged 22 miles-per-gallon on our mixed test loop. Just one MPG less than the last 4-cylinder Outback we tested! When testing the VDC system, we initially felt little difference in our slalom test. Except that the power steering delivered less feedback than our 4-cylinder long term test car. And the new engine’s extra weight seemed to induce a bit more front end plow in mid-corner. But pushed a lot harder, and the VDC system kicked in to smoothly and unobtrusively pull the car back into the desired line. Overall, it’s a nice improvement, but not an inexpensive one. The L.L Bean Edition Outback carries a base price of $29,990. While the full-bore H6-3.0 VDC model will cost you $32,390. That’s $5,600 over the price of a 4-cylinder Outback Limited. At least that buys you most of the Limited’s luxurious interior trappings. Plus special leather upholstery, McIntosh audio system, and automatic climate control. Still, we hope Subaru will make the impressive 6-cylinder engine available in more reasonably priced models soon, and allow Subaru drivers and their cars to shoot it out with the big boys, without having to go for broke. 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0R VDC We are pleased to present this exceptional Subaru Outback 3.0R VDC. This is the absolute top of the line Outback for 2005. This is one step above the L.L. Bean. Subarus are known for their world-class sporting performance, and this car is no exception. These also feature Subaru's proven and smooth horizontally opposed 6 cylinder engine which is mated to legendary symmetrical all wheel drive. It is extremely hard to find these Outbacks with the 6 Cylinder engine, and it is definitely the engine to have in this car. It changes the Outback from a fairly ordinary car into a very refined, very smooth luxurious vehicle. The added power allows the engine to work less hard, so in turn it gets about the same gas mileage, too! The tan leather seats are in excellent condition. The leather shows very little wear. The car has automatic climate control which works properly. The air conditioning works. This car has the premium audio system with 7 speakers which sounds fantastic. There is a 6 CD changer in the dash. For safety, this Subaru has, of course, dual front airbags, as well as side airbags and curtain airbags for the front and rear passengers. The cargo area is in beautiful condition and there is a retractable cargo cover as well as a cargo net. The owners manual booklet is there along with the original window sticker. Since it's a 3.0R VDC (top of the line), the interior has some extra appointments that you wouldn't find in a regular outback. It has an auto-dimming compass mirror with homelink, a trip comouter, dual power seats, the dual zone climate control, a MOMO sport steering wheel with wood trim, and much, much more. It also has a massive panoramic sunroof. It's fitted with the special electroluminescent sport gauge cluster which has numerous added features. It does a really cool looking gauge sweep when the car is started, and it fades out when the car is turned off. Also, when the fuel gauge is low, the red ring around it flashes to alert you of this. The car also has beautiful natural wood inserts on the dash and door panels. These look fantastic with the tan interior color. The wood trim on the dash vents is actually something we've never seen before on one of these. That along with the rear UV tinted windows are somethings which were added by Subaru when the car was new. Subaru owned this car for the first 8 months and we speculate that it was used as a show car. Following that, the car was sold by a Subaru dealership to its first and only owners until now. The outside of this Outback is beautiful and is finished in the stunning and very pretty Atlantic Blue Pearl. I myself just love this color on Subarus. It's the only way to go. This color is really quite striking. The paint is in good condition, but there are some scratches here and there, and some scrapes on the bumpers from parking. We've touched up a lot of them since the photos of the car, so it looks much better now. As I mentioned, the car has the huge panoramic sunroof which only came on the upper-level models. It is over the front and rear seats and gives the cabin a great open-air feel, even when it's closed. It works properly. There is no rust on this outback at all. It also has 17" alloy wheels which were exclusive to the higher end outbacks. Also included on the 3.0R models, were LED turn signals in the mirrors, along with many other features. The tires are all matching Bridgestone tires with excellent tread remaining. The brakes are in good shape and the car stops as it should. The car drives perfectly and is very quick. The engine and transmission operate properly. As was mentioned above, the carfax doesn't show any accident or damage history at all, and is completely clean. It shows that the car has had only one owner since new (aside from the brief period where it was owned by Subaru for show use). We'd be happy to provide a copy of the carfax if you contact us.
