They're usually cars with high sticker prices that depreciated quickly, like the Mercedes SL. Porsche's 944 is another: everywhere on Craigslist for $5000 with worn paint and not running, spectacular specimens are few and far between. This car is one of the exceptions, with a nice service history, good cosmetics, and only 69,575 original miles. Study this car's lines, and consider its contemporaries: The 300ZX, the RX-7, the Mitsubishi Starion...and notice how relevant the 944 still is today. There aren't any tacky add-ons, the wheels are nicely placed in their wheel wells, and the shape is surprisingly contemporary. As for condition, the burgundy finish has been repainted at some point and looks great, giving Porsche's wedge-shaped sports car an elegant look that disguises its intentions. It's not perfect, of course, but you don't see cars this nice very often and Porsche's build quality stands out with the deep shine and good panel gaps. The taillights are a deep red, indicating proper storage indoors and the rear hatch hasn't de-laminated (a common 944 issue). Even today, folks will look at this car and assume that it costs thousands more than it does. Inside, you'll be amazed at the amount of room up front. The rear seats can handle medium-sized kids for short trips, but put the fronts all the way back and six footers can stretch their legs out straight. There's even helmet room should you decide that autocrossing or doing track days is in your future. An AM/FM/cassette Blaupunkt looks to be original equipment, since Porsche was only offering tape decks in 1987. The original steering wheel has a thick leather covering that matches the interior and shows only modest signs of use but no dryness or cracking. The upholstery is burgundy leather with grippy cloth inserts all in great condition and matching the exterior. The shifter boot shows some wear, but otherwise the interior remains in first class condition and remarkably, the center console is in perfect shape with no extra holes, since many original owners had car phones installed. In back, the hatch area is fully carpeted and doesn't show fading, a remarkable feat given the red carpets. And while you're back there, check out the original tool kit, air compressor, spare tire, and jack set, extras that rarely survived the years, especially in such great shape. Under the hood is nothing but good news. The 944's 2.5 liter all-aluminum four cylinder has timing belts, and it's bad news when they fail. The good news is that this car's belts were done recently, so it's ready to rock. Properly maintained, these engines will run for hundreds of thousands of miles, and this one is a good one with a smooth idle and plenty of torque from the rather large displacement. The engine bay looks like someone cared about maintenance and while it appears complex, you'll find that taking care of a 944 isn't all that difficult. The undercarriage is dry, dry, dry and with just under 70,000 actual miles on the clock this 944 feels years younger thanks to solid engineering and the entire package feels a lot more contemporary than you'd expect. The wheels are proper 15x7 "phone dial" aluminum pieces surrounded by correctly-sized 215/60/15 Pirelli P4000 radials. The 944 is forgiving for beginners and a real treat for seasoned drivers. A slick-shifting transmission, great steering, nimble power, amazing build quality and classic lines adds up to a truly great package. By the time this 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera cabrio was built, most of the tail happy behavior was finely honed out...but not all. You never forget you're in a rear-engined car, and you don't want to. Gorgeous cars like this Signal Red 911 here have a way of getting into your soul, and you'll wonder how you lived without one. Outside, you're looking at one very stock Porsche. The paint is very nice with few marks, and the door panels are perfect in a way that can only indicate that the car's never been hit. The low mileage (only 51,908 actual miles) confirms what your eye can see, as well and the quality of the Porsche factory is tangible everywhere you look. A factory chin spoiler, body-colored bumpers, and the "whale tail" rear spoiler were favorite details that made these cars iconic, and it also carries Euro-spec headlight lenses and a black Carrera emblem on the deck lid. The doors open and close with a remarkable sense of precision, especially for a convertible, and there's zero evidence that this car has been raced, abused, or otherwise mistreated. The stance is even factory correct; this is nearly what this car looked like new! Eight way adjustable black leather seats invite you in with a look that's comfortable but not worn out. A few comfort marks are to be expected but it doesn't look like the hides have been baked by the sun, which is unusual in a high-profile convertible like this. Porsche's familiar gauges are the epitome of simplicity and quick-reference, with a big tach front and center and auxiliary gauges flanking it on either side. The shifter works rather well considering the transmission is way behind you and the fat leather-wrapped steering wheel telegraphs whatever the front tires are doing directly to your palms. The factory AM/FM/cassette stereo remains in place and the factory A/C is still functional thanks to an R134a refrigerant upgrade. Overhead there's a nice-fitting black canvas convertible top that folds easily into a neat stack that preserves the back seats (well, sort of, you probably don't want adults riding back there). The trunk is richly carpeted in black, adding to the luxurious look and feel of Porsche's flagship. Open the engine lid and find the strong 3.2 liter flat six, good for 217 horsepower. That doesn't sound like much, but this is a 2800 pound car, and it's plenty enough to zip by 95% of cars built today, let alone the dismal 1980's. There's a surprising amount of torque, lots of revs, and unadulterated mechanical music. 3.2-liter Carreras are known for their longevity, and thanks to conscientious maintenance (with receipts!), you don't have to worry about this one biting you in the back later. Backing the motor is a G50 five speed, which was a big upgrade over the 4-speed used until 1987. This is a VASTLY improved gearbox with a hydraulically actuated clutch and a different synchro design, giving it a truly modern feel. Put the car on a lift and there's not much to see, and that's a good thing! The motor is VERY dry, the floor pans are straight, and there are no issues to report. Heck, you can still see factory overspray on the floors! The exhaust offers a great flat-six wail that's never obnoxious and Factory 16x6 and 16x7 Fuchs wheels fill the fenders with fat Michelin performance radials. If you're looking for a true sports car, few are as pure as a 911. If you're looking for a purchase that will hold its value AND provide years of enjoyment, this gorgeous Carrera belongs in your garage. There's unmistakable 911 DNA in the bodywork, a rear-mounted 3.6 liter flat six, and a slick-shifting Tiptronic transmission that makes it very user-friendly as well. Black always looks predatory on the 911, and the 964's well-integrated bumpers give it a distinctive look regardless of what color it wears. This one has been lightly modified with a familiar "whale tail" rear spoiler and clear marker lenses, both of which only increase the performance look. Most of the paint is original, and despite its age, it remains in good condition, a testament to Porsche's legendary build quality. The nose has been repainted at some point, but the color match was well done and the rear spoiler looks like it was born there. Chrome '911' emblems are on the deck lid, replacing the "Carrara 2" script for a more traditional look and we have to admit that we love the cleanly integrated taillights which give the 964 in particular a much cleaner look from the rear. The black trim around the windows is still smooth and dark, so it hasn't been sitting out in the sunlight and the rockers haven't been sandblasted by the fat tires, so it's probably led an easy life. The interior is beautiful tan leather whose quality materials and expert workmanship seem to defy the passage of time. There's virtually zero wear on the seats and only light discoloration to the carpets, which have been protected by Porsche-logo floor mats since it was new. Airbags were relatively new in 1990, but Porsche's fat steering wheel and direct connection to the front tires is unaltered. Gauges should look familiar to anyone who has driven a Porsche in the last, oh, four decades, with a big tach in the center and flanked by the secondary gauges. And in 1990, just about everything was standard equipment, including power windows, seats, and mirrors, A/C, plus the Tiptronic transmission, which was Porsche's first attempt at an automatic transmission, offering a manual mode that offers plenty of driver involvement. The stereo has been upgraded to an AM/FM/CD setup with a flip-up head unit and while there is a pair of rear seats, they're really best reserved for children or packages. The front-mounted trunk is fully finished with black carpets and an aftermarket carbon-fiber strut tower brace that really firms up steering feel. The 3.6 liter air-cooled flat six was an evolution of the familiar Porsche powerplant, and its fat torque curve was designed for American tastes and the automatic transmission. It still howls to redline in every gear, but it's also supremely docile if you want to drive it to work every day. The 964 is also noted for it's bulletproof reliability, and thanks to proper maintenance throughout its life, this one is ready to rock. The Tiptronic is a 4-speed with overdrive, so it's a great highway car (as you'd expect with the Autobahn running through its home town) but the reflexes are lightning quick around town and on the track. Underneath, it's shockingly clean with an undertray designed to cheat the wind and a suspension that's comfortable but insanely capable. Gorgeous Porsche Cup wheels wrap around giant disc brakes with painted calipers and wear fat Bridgestone performance radials. Classic Porsche prices are on the move, and the 964 remains one of the last places to get traditional air-cooled Porsche excellence at a reasonable price. Few cars represent bigger bang for the buck, and this immaculately maintained car still commands respect wherever it goes, never mind the fact that it's also a blast to drive. Maybe some 911 guys look down at the front-engined, water-cooled 944, but one drive will convince anyone that this is a serious driver's car. The Guards Red bodywork is a little "Miami Vice" but still looks fantastic, a testament to the care it has received for the past few decades, including a very high-quality respray about 15 years ago. There's no evidence that it was ever raced or abused, and unlike many of its siblings, it hasn't been chopped and gutted to make a track day special. The Turbo's special front fascia carries large fog lamps and extra cooling ducts, but no scuffs or cracks from steep driveways. Fit and finish are typically Porsche excellent and even the black rubber trim like the rear spoiler and weather stripping is smooth and supple. There's a small scuff on the passenger's side, but you need to look pretty hard to find demerits on this car. Check out the overall condition then look at the price and be prepared to be impressed. The interior is as pure a driving environment as you'll find. Designed by the same guys who win at Lemans, it avoids the quirks of the 911 and delivers all the gear you need to get the most out of the hardware. Supportive leather buckets are grippy but all-day comfortable, and the textured surface seems to be defying the years with its condition. Clear analog gauges put function over style and the 5-speed shifter is the best one this side of a Mazda Miata's joystick. Just about everything was standard (this IS a Porsche, after all) including A/C, power windows and locks, and cruise control. The original 80s vintage stereo has been replaced by a great-sounding Alpine AM/FM/CD head unit and there's a Momo steering wheel, but otherwise it's as the factory built it. The 944 is also practical, with a large hatch area and two rear seats that are useful in a pinch. The 944's turbocharged inline-four cranked out a robust 217 horsepower from just 2.5 liters. Canted over at an angle for a lower center of gravity, it makes big torque at low speeds, yet its light weight means that the car has almost ideal 50/50 weight distribution. While these cars are ridiculously easy to modify, this one remains completely stock, and given Porsche's impressive durability it should continue to run for years and years. The 5-speed manual transmission has its own oil cooler for track use, and the fully independent suspension is race-bred yet supple and everyone knows Porsche's binders are legendary. Expert maintenance means that it's turn-key ready, and the impressively clean undercarriage is more proof that this car has led an easy life as a fair-weather toy. The exhaust system is an aftermarket stainless setup that sounds spectacular, but that's the only notable mechanical upgrade. Wheels are later polished Porsche Cup alloys which wear big 225/40/18 performance radials. Go ahead, give this one a try. At nearly 30 years old, it's still impressive on the road and it should be no surprise that these are still incredibly popular track day toys. This one is so clean and well-maintained, there's still a lot of fun awaiting its new owner.
