Finished in its original Champagne Yellow as confirmed by the included Porsche COA, it is powered by a beautiful 1720cc engine from John Benton of renowned SoCal Porsche shop Benton Performance. The interior was fully redone by Russ Rodriguez of Fibersteel, and exhibits an impressive level of cleanliness and detail with Speedster style seats, plaid upholstery, and a Les Leston wood steering wheel. During the 2000s the previous owner had been searching for the right 356 to build a Carrera GT style hotrod, and specifically wanted a wide-five drum brake 356 for their unique stance with Carrera spacers and long wheel studs. With extensive documentation back to 1973, this is a special car that nails the factory GT look and sounds awesome through the stainless Sebring exhaust.The previous owner's desire for a drum brake car eliminated the ’64 and ’65 disc wheel models, and after searching for months he finally found what he wanted in Roanoke, VA in March of 2009. Photos in the gallery link below show it as found – an unmolested and honest driver with good paint and interior. Special details on the exterior include aluminum bumper trim with deleted guards, lightweight frameless plexiglas quarter windows, deleted rocker trim, aluminum housed fender mirror, mesh horn grilles, rear wheel spacers, and a lowered ride height. When purchased the Champagne finish was good but the previous owner wanted to bring it to the next level. He enlisted Jim East in Orange County to do the work, and the quality speaks for itself. The car makes a very strong impression with Marchal H4 headlamps and a great stance over steel wheels shod in Dunlop CR65 vintage race tires. The YOM California black plates are a nice touch. Many lift shots are viewable below and show a clean underbody, and the seller says there are no replacement panels and the floors are all original. After the deal was made to buy the car in Virginia, the previous owner says, “I trucked it immediately to Russ Rodriguez of Fibersteel for its transformation, with the goal of making it edgy but not over the top.” We think the bold interior choice paid off, and it looks extremely well done with correct square weave wool carpet and excellent green leather over plaid-insert Fibersteel Speedster bucket seats. Carpet, trim, and rubber mats are all in excellent, show-quality condition and the full interior invoice is shown below to have cost $11k+. All the little details take a lot of time to get right and are spot-on here, notably the Les Leston steering wheel which was restored by Bruce Crawford and a correct GT-spec 4-point rollbar. The car was Ziebarted early in its life and remains free of rust. Benton Performance completed a full teardown and rebuild of the engine, which while not original is believed to be a factory replacement case given the blank stamping. The car does retain it’s original 4-speed transmission. Displacement was increased to 1720cc and twin downdraft Solex carburetors fitted.The stainless Sebring-style exhaust was built by James Constas and sounds like a warmed over 356 should with a raspy exhaust note and signature center exit pipe with removable muffling insert. We lusted after these custom exhausts when we owned our 356A. Fit and finish on the engine is show quality and the engine lid has been altered with a GT-style mesh internal screen.Ownership records and service history go back to 1973. In addition to service records, a neatly organized, hand-written notebook shows detailed records of the car’s early service history and corresponding mileage. More recent service records are also present including all invoices and receipts from the 2009 restoration. A lot of money was spent to bring the car to its current condition and it shows.
