This particular 1972 Plymouth Duster 340, however, isn't some smog-strangled commuter, but one of Chrysler's hottest performance cars of the era, and it's exceptionally nice. Code V2 Tor-Red ideally captures the spirit of the times and stands out today for those of us who like a bit of nostalgia with our old cars. And while the Duster was technically an economy car, this one has had a bunch of time spent getting it into shape, both externally and under the hood. For a '72 Duster, this one must have been pretty clean to begin with, which is a rare thing all on its own, because the quality of the car is just over-the-top, particularly at this price. We're undecided as to whether this is an exceptional original car or a nicely restored unit, but the finish has a deep shine that shows well and it isn't perfect, so it'll keep everyone else guessing, too. The doors fit well, the quarters are smooth, and the blacked-out hood with 340 graphics and a white sport stripe along the flanks clearly identify this as a piece of Mopar muscle. The chrome and trim is probably original and looking its age, with some light pitting on the bumpers, but again, as a low-dollar high-performance machine, this one has a lot going for it. The basic theme continues inside with a super clean black bench seat interior, complete with matching carpets and door panels. It's got a matching set of Duster-logo floor mats and the Duster does a good job of blending economy and performance, with durable materials, a Hurst 4-speed shifter, and precious little else. And even as a value-priced entry, this Duster comes complete with a full array of informative gauges from the factory, although the tach and oil pressure gauge are not working. The woodgrained applique on the instrument panel warms things up a bit and we've always liked Chrysler's 3-spoke steering wheel, which looks sporty, not cheap. There is only an AM radio but that only means it's ready for the head unit of your choice and the rest is street-racer basic: crank windows, manual steering, and only a heater and defroster. The trunk is surprisingly large for a compact car like this, and carries a correct mat. Obviously there's a 340 cubic inch V8 under the hood and it's got a very authentic look that's right in line with other Mopar performance cars. The air cleaner advertises the 4-barrel carburetor underneath, there's Hemi Orange paint on the block, and a set of headers helps built low-end torque. Supporting equipment includes a big radiator, a fresh battery, and a new dual exhaust system with stock-style mufflers polished oval tips peeking out under the rear bumper. The 4-speed manual transmission was becoming an endangered species in 1972, but without it, this car becomes ho-hum, so we're thrilled to see it here. You'll find the original 8.75-inch rear end out back and the rest of the chassis look very clean and tidy with only a set of air shocks deviating from stock spec. 14-inch Rallye wheels offer a classic performance look and wear fat Firestone Firehawk radials. This neat little Plymouth is the perfect entry-level, high-quality muscle car with V8 power in a very affordable package. Well, things just got serious with this 1972 Duster coupe, which gets all the traditional Duster stuff right (low cost, cool look) and adds a 21st century twist in the form of a fuel-injected 5.7 liter Hemi and a 5-speed automatic transmission, creating one heck of a cool resto-mod with an even cooler price. There's just no way you could build this car yourself for the asking price, and if this car is still in the showroom two weeks from now, I'll be shocked. The dark blue paint and strobe stripes give it a familiar look, and if nothing else, the guys at Chrysler were keeping the performance look alive in the dark days of the early 1970s. Add in a blacked-out hood and a Go-Wing out back, and you get a compact package that looks like fun and wants to run. Paint and bodywork are acceptable, but at this price, you aren't expecting concours perfection anyway. Instead, it's pure driver-grade, and there's no shame in that, especially since it will be even more adept at luring in unsuspecting drivers on the street who figure it's just another garden-variety small block Duster. The decals are recent, so they're crisp and nicely rendered and the sheetmetal and panel gaps are quite good throughout, so it's obviously been a clean car all its life. Add in a few discreet HEMI emblems on the front fenders, however, and this car is going to generate a few double-takes. The interior got a modern makeover, too, but doesn't lose any of its honesty and working-class roots. The bench seat does a reasonable impersonation of buckets and the black upholstery is in good order with no splits or tears. Recent black carpets look good and offer a correct heel pad for the driver, and the fat steering wheel looks a lot like a vintage Tuff Wheel. The original dashboard is intact but the gauges are now modern digital units that look awesome behind a smoked Plexiglas screen and a custom B&M shifter allows do-it-yourself shifting of the modern-tech automatic gearbox. The original AM radio is in the dash, but it's overdue for a replacement anyway and it just doesn't go with the rest of the car anyway. There's also a reasonably spacious back seat and a giant trunk that still carries its original mat as well as a relocated battery. They moved that battery to make room for the 5.7 liter HEMI V8 that now lives under the hood. The fuel-injected Magnum is a neat fit in the Duster's engine bay and provides the instant starting, easy idling, and good fuel economy that we've come to expect from our modern daily drivers. It's a big performance boost over the original wheezing 318 and service access remains very good. Front disc brakes were added, along with a big electric fan for the radiator, and the wiring and plumbing is rather clean, especially that remote-mounted oil filter. Underneath you get a 5-speed automatic overdrive transmission, so this is a very easy highway cruiser and that injected HEMI sounds awesome exhaling through a custom Flowmaster exhaust system with turn-downs just ahead of the 8.75-inch rear axle. A new gas tank hangs out back and it really nails the sleeper vibe with those 14-inch Rallye wheels and white-letter tires. A very slick resto-mod with a ton of potential, this Duster already has all the hard work finished. It's a blast to drive and with a few additional tweaks, it could be one of the most amazing sleepers we've seen in a long time. Looking at this one-owner 1972 Plymouth Duster, you'll be amazed by the preservation of the body and interior and with a thrifty slant-six under the hood, it's a practical, fun, and surprisingly energetic starter collectable. Did we mention it comes with the original dealer invoice and owners manual? The bright red paint has a lot of years on it, yet given the fact that this car has lived its entire life in warm, dry, sunny Georgia, it's probably not a surprise that it still looks great. There's a gloss to the finish that no paint technique can duplicate and only time can make a car this honest. Sure, it's got a few signs of use (don't we all?), but this is the proverbial little old lady special that was tucked away whenever the weather turned foul and only used lightly. The doors, hood, and deck lid are all where the factory workers put them back in 1972 and there's just an intangible feel to a car that has never been apart that no restoration could ever duplicate. A black vinyl half roof makes the sporty Duster look a bit more formal, and the minimalist trim suits its economy-minded mission quite well. This is one of Chrysler's more attractive designs of the period, smooth and substantial without looking bloated, and even the chrome bumpers fit snugly to the body to enhance its sleek profile. The black interior is surprisingly comfortable and like the rest of the car, in amazing condition. Bench seats make it feel roomy inside and the bright metal inserts on the seat backs gives it an upscale impression when you first open the door. There's a remarkably complete array of instruments for the driver, all nestled into a woodgrained instrument panel, and the three-spoke steering wheel will be familiar to any Mopar fan. There's an A/C system under the dash which is an unusual addition to the affordable Duster, but the rest appears to be no-frills motoring, including the original AM radio in the dash. Check in the trunk and you'll find a reproduction mat, but one glance at the insides of the quarter panels confirms that they're original and untouched. The 225 cubic inch slant-six was one of Chrysler's better ideas. Durable and smooth, it has plenty of torque to move the lightweight Duster around in an entertaining way. It's been recently freshened and shows off bright corporate blue paint surrounded by a very clean engine bay. An original air cleaner fits snugly against the power brake booster and A/C compressor, which is now full of R134a refrigerant. It's backed by a 3-speed automatic transmission and the original rear end with highway-friendly gears inside, so this is a car you can drive regularly without emptying your bank account. There's plenty of originality underneath, which isn't a bad thing in this case, because there's nothing hiding under a layer of undercoating, just the signs of age that all cars of this vintage show. A single exhaust system has that distinctive slant-six sound and the ride is comfortable, not cheap-feeling. Recent whitewall radials have been fitted to sporty Rallye wheels, which always look right on '70s Chryslers. It probably won't make you rich overnight, but if you've been looking for an inexpensive way to enjoy the greatest hobby on earth, then this 1-owner, documented, bright Duster might just be the one for you. Looking at this one-owner 1972 Plymouth Duster, youll be amazed by the preservation of the body and interior and with a thrifty slant-six under the hood, its a practical, fun, and surprisingly energetic starter collectable. Did we mention it comes with the original dealer invoice and owners manual? The bright red paint has a lot of years on it, yet given the fact that this car has lived its entire life in warm, dry, sunny Georgia, its probably not a surprise that it still looks great. Theres a gloss to the finish that no paint technique can duplicate and only time can make a car this honest. Sure, its got a few signs of use (dont we all?), but this is the proverbial little old lady special that was tucked away whenever the weather turned foul and only used lightly. The doors, hood, and deck lid are all where the factory workers put them back in 1972 and theres just an intangible feel to a car that has never been apart that no restoration could ever duplicate. A black vinyl half roof makes the sporty Duster look a bit more formal, and the minimalist trim suits its economy-minded mission quite well. This is one of Chryslers more attractive designs of the period, smooth and substantial without looking bloated, and even the chrome bumpers fit snugly to the body to enhance its sleek profile. The black interior is surprisingly comfortable and like the rest of the car, in amazing condition. Finished in Sub-Lime Green metallic paint, this slick compact now carries a snarling 318-inch small block and a high-profile personality that refuses to be ignored. Originally, this car was just a bland commuter special, anonymous in its factory gold paint. But since it was straight and clean, someone saw the potential in it, so it was stripped down to the basics, the sheetmetal was expertly smoothed, and it was covered in a few coats of that outrageous bright green paint that looks like it might be radioactive. No longer a shrinking violet, this slick Duster was just getting started, so they added hood snorkels and a deck lid spoiler, to really set things off. Workmanship is impressive, with doors that close crisp and solid and a very impressive shine to the glossy urethane paint. Even up close, the finish is astoundingly deep and we really can't see how anyone could have done a more thorough job. A black vinyl roof works quite well with the other black accents on the car and there are fresh chrome bumpers at either end, just to keep it looking mostly stock. The handsome interior is beautifully restored using fresh tan seat covers, door panels, and carpets to re-create the factory look. It's actually very sophisticated for an affordable car and comfortable enough to spend all day behind the wheel. The original dashboard offers a surprisingly complete array of gauges, augmented by a tachometer mounted on the A-pillar and auxiliary gauges under the dash, all with slick white faces. Factory A/C is always a welcome option and it's particularly unusual in a Duster, and it now uses modern R134a refrigerant inside. It's possible that the back seat is original, and if that's the case, this is one amazingly well-preserved car, so it's easy to see how the builder saw the potential in it. And the trunk shows there's no trace of the original gold paint, meaning that the color change was quite thorough. It also includes correct mats and a jack assembly tucked into the corner. A fully rebuilt 318 is neatly dressed with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock intake manifold, providing a proven combination which gives the hot small block instantaneous throttle response and a great mid-range punch. Chrome dress-up items accent the bright green engine bay, but otherwise it looks fairly stock. Factory cast iron exhaust manifolds control noise and heat better than headers and flow almost as well, feeding an aggressive-sounding dual exhaust system with glasspack-style mufflers. The A904 3-speed automatic transmission seems to read your mind when you stomp the loud pedal, dropping down a gear to let the small block get into the meaty part of the power band, and with ultra-tall 2.76 gears in the Dana 30 rear end, it's a great long-distance cruiser, too. Those period-correct Rallye wheels are a great look and wear 195/70/14 radials all four corners. Documented with an original build sheet, this is a really neat piece of Mopar muscle that was done right. With a nod to authenticity but a strong desire to attract attention, this Duster is always a lot of fun. If you decide to purchase from us, we require that you give us your complete name, address and phone numbers (home, office, mobile and fax) and a port of entry that handles containers. We do not ship vehicles open (RORO: Roll On Roll Off) due to risk of damage to vehicle and theft of parts. All international purchases must be paid by bank wire transfer in US Dollar funds only.
