1936 Packard Twelve 1407 Coupe Roadster                             Last of the truly great Packard Twelve’s!  Suicide doors, dual side mounts, chrome wire wheels, rumble seat, AM radio, deluxe heater, and more!  Gorgeous interior, excellent chrome, rebuilt drivetrain, and same former ownership of 25+ years!  Represents one of only 682 Twelve’s built for 1936, and one of the few Coupe Roadsters to ever come to market! After the Great Depression of 1929 had crippled American lifestyle, Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, MI felt buyers of their exclusive product line would require more value for their money once on showrooms. It was decided that Senior Packard’s would become even more opulent and expensive!  Style lines improved dramatically, and the numbered Series models continued as they begun in 1923.  By 1931, adjustable shocks allowed for a new, driver-operated Ride Control system.  The Twin Six twelve cylinder-equipped vehicles were simply renamed Twelve’s in 1933 and stayed this way through their final year of 1939. With the introduction of a new medium-priced model, which came to production in 1935, named the 120 Model, it undeniably saved Packard from a similar demise of luxury brands such as Stutz, Marmon, Franklin, Pierce-Arrow, and Duesenberg. This inexpensive Junior option was built by more modern mass-production standards, while the Senior cars continued to require slower, handmade traditional craftsmanship.  Nearly 10 times as many Junior cars would be produced.  Packard continued to be recognized as America’s strongest luxury brand the world over.   For several reasons the 1936 model year, named the 14th Series instead of the 13th apparently for superstitious reasons, would become one of the most desired among serious Packard collectors.  It would be the last year for suicide style forward opening doors, solid axle front ends, and availability of wire spoke wheels!  The Twelve Coupe Roadster undeniably being one of the most beautifully sculpted Packard’s of all time! We are very excited to offer this hard to find 1936 Packard Twelve 1407 Coupe Roadster finished in Mayan Maroon with Red pinstripe and Tan Leather interior accented beautifully by Carpathian straight grained elm wood grained dash and steering wheel. Powered by its original & fully rebuilt 473ci V12 engine (#904445) producing 175 horsepower/366 ft. lbs. of torque mated to a 3-speed floor-shifted manual transmission with synchromesh top two gears.  Options & features include 17” Chrome wire spoke wheels wrapped in Michelin X 7.50R17 XCA Radial tube type wide whitewall tires, dual side-mounted spare tires with steel covers and Packard “se-Rite” mirrors, dual sun visors, metal-inlayed wood door caps, Packard Deluxe AM car radio, Packard heater, Ride Control system, dual golf bag doors with key locks, vacuum assisted drum brakes, rear rumble seat with fold out arm pads, interior map light, 30 gallon gas tank, and more! Our gorgeous example showcases a 30-year old restoration that survived exceptionally well while in the hands of its former Seattle caretaker of 25 years! Having a proper, professional restoration hold up this well over time supports it was done right the first time.  The dash wood graining, seat leathers, steering wheel, interior knobs & controls all appear in excellent condition.  The exterior chrome is bright and smooth without and spotting or pitting, while the paint lacquer paint has held up quite well with only subtle signs of age upon closer inspection.  Always garaged, and only driven and the nicest of days during the limited season provided in the Northwest.  Today, it continues to be an excellent driver provided with an electric fuel pump, added Antique, Inc. turn signals, and a battery cut-off under the hood for times of storage. According the Packard body tag attached bearing chassis #939-223, this car sold new in February 1936 from Packard in Akron, OH. Having made its way to the west coast later in life, with a stop in Oregon before settling into Washington State, it was honored with a CCCA National First Place award after being restored (Award #1154).  A great opportunity for the astute Packard collector looking for the last of the great Twelve’s ever built!  This Packard Twelve 2/4 Coupe Roadster would be a splendid addition!  Please feel free to call with questions. And in the 1930s, when the marque was tops in the luxury car market, elegant offerings like this magnificent Twelve rightfully earned the tagline 'Boss of the Road'. As smooth now as it was over seven decades ago, this defiantly massive convertible is the absolute pinnacle of pre-war automotive luxury. Enjoyed by only three owners, the car is a known, authentic example of one of the most desirable Classic Era Packards on the planet. As one of only 1,300 1937 Twelves produced, it has been awarded a National First Prize from the AACA and First Senior honors from the CCCA. And presently, it sits as a well-documented, professionally restored cruiser that's an elegant representation of some of America's best history! BODYWORK/TRIM The 15th Series was a conservatively elegant automobile that gave credibility to Packard marketeers' claims of products "as modem as an architectural design by Frank Lloyd Wright". Despite the same finely tailored lines and top-notch appointments, the brand's transition to more streamlined styling would be increasingly evident throughout the decade. But, at its core, the Twelve remained a Classic Era Packard, featuring a towering radiator shell, bullet-shaped headlights, a trademark chrome grille, flowing, skirted fenders, and a familiar 'Cormorant' hood ornament. ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN In the age of 16-cylinder luxury, the Twelve was one of the fastest cars you could buy for anything less than Duesenberg money. That said; the higher-powered offerings from Cadillac, Marmon and Pierce-Arrow could probably nip a Packard Twelve in a close race. But a modified mill like this roadster's 473 cubic inch L-head V12 certainly wasn't something to readily bet against. For 1937, the Twelve's running gear underwent the most radical redesign in its history. The car's traditional 3-speed synchromesh transmission was augmented with an independent front suspension, marketed as "Safe-T-Flex", a proven hydraulic brake system and steel disk wheels. This resulted in 15th Series Packards, most prominently the top-of-the-line 12-cylinder models, being widely regarded as some of the most driver-friendly cars of the Classic Era; with the smooth, effortless engineering of vacuum-boosted brakes and a vacuum-boosted clutch being particularly well-suited to modern roads. As such, the most desirable open body styles are only rarely offered for sale. HISTORY The Coupe Roadster pictured here is a known, authentic and exclusive classic that's believed to be 1 of only 69 builds. The car still has its original firewall tag. Its history is known all the way back to the 1950s. And, for over half a century, this drop-top was the prized possession of well-known Southern California enthusiast Bob Hance, who regularly displayed it at CCCA activities and Golden State Concours d'Elegance. In 2001, when Mr. Hance decided to sell his 2-owner gem, a ground-up, professional restoration was well documented via photographs and receipts. Naturally, that restoration involved impeccable attention to detail, featuring items such as correct pinstripe patterning, a correct leather interior, correct wool carpet and a correctly detailed engine bay. And the car wears many factory accessories including: a heater, a trunk rack, a correct 30-gallon fuel gauge indicator, a factory-installed AM radio that's wired to an under-car antenna and chrome wheel covers that are complete with Packard cloisonne emblems. Since that restoration the car has seen quite a few significant milestones, achieving CCCA Senior Premier status, being recorded as a 2009 AACA National First Prize winner and completing a 900-mile CCCA CARavan. And, just as it was 78 years ago, the car is an ideal automobile for showing and happily driving. About This Auction Please note that all sales are binding and final.
