Oddly, this 1930 Packard 733 is in such a superior class by its own today that you might never find a peer at car shows or concours events. Packards have always been about providing premium motoring, and this one is true elegance on wheels. The bodywork, chrome grille, lights, and all other major components show signs that they were in the care of someone who knew that maintaining did not mean fidgeting. Black is impressive on a vehicle this size, especially when it covers the body so completely. But, the real reason why it's so stunning is the intricate gold pinstriping that helps highlight this car so well - it's even inside the solid metal wheels. The paint is part of an older restoration, which actually just gives it the kind of gloss that will make people mistake it for an extremely exceptional survivor. The coupe body has an impressive presence on a car this large, and Packard's 133.5-inch wheelbase was actually the short one for the Standard Eights! This style gives you the option of having a closed coupe when you want personal elegance, and then the foldable rumble seat is there for everything from extra friends, to a place of honor in parades. Packard even included the side compartment for your set of golf clubs. Best of all, all of the chrome trim intact and has an impressive shine, including the "goddess of speed" hood ornament. Inside, the sumptuous interior has been restored to a very high level. The red leather seat is a pure attention-getter from the moment you simply open the doors, or open the rumble seat. It also coordinates nicely with the cherry wood on the dashboard giving this coupe an unparalleled elegance for its era. This kind of stylishness is repeated on the door with a combination of a wood and organic gray fabric, that also gets a touch of the bold red. There's even a retractable cigar lighter, which tells you the man who ordered this custom coupe was not yet feeling the effects of The Great Depression that would soon bring sales of premium cars like this to a trickle. Lift the hood to understand why Packards were a car to envy. Power comes from Packard's durable, and reliable, 320 cubic inch straight-eight, and the green and gray block is so long it looks like it belongs in a locomotive. It still embodies all the precise tolerances, and impeccable engineering for which Packard was famous. Just like the exterior, this one has a very nice restoration that has the engine bay slightly aged to look like the ultimate pristine survivor. This powerplant is mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and the complete drivetrain is believed to be original. This is the era before synchromesh, but tall rear gears means you can drive this car about wherever you want without much double-clutching. In fact, compared to other cars of the era, this Packard is a joy to take around town thanks to its multi-functional taillight and four-wheel brakes. A Packard was a sign of wealth and distinction when it was new, and the reputation has only grown as these elegant machines have become more rare. This one is a cut above, and even comes with documentation and paperwork such as the owner's manual. Finding another out there this complete, correct, and nice will be tough, and we know it one won't last in our showroom. And in the 1930s, when the marque was tops in the luxury car market, elegant offerings like this magnificent Twelve rightfully earned the tagline 'Boss of the Road'. As smooth now as it was over seven decades ago, this defiantly massive convertible is the absolute pinnacle of pre-war automotive luxury. Enjoyed by only three owners, the car is a known, authentic example of one of the most desirable Classic Era Packards on the planet. As one of only 1,300 1937 Twelves produced, it has been awarded a National First Prize from the AACA and First Senior honors from the CCCA. And presently, it sits as a well-documented, professionally restored cruiser that's an elegant representation of some of America's best history! BODYWORK/TRIM The 15th Series was a conservatively elegant automobile that gave credibility to Packard marketeers' claims of products "as modem as an architectural design by Frank Lloyd Wright". Despite the same finely tailored lines and top-notch appointments, the brand's transition to more streamlined styling would be increasingly evident throughout the decade. But, at its core, the Twelve remained a Classic Era Packard, featuring a towering radiator shell, bullet-shaped headlights, a trademark chrome grille, flowing, skirted fenders, and a familiar 'Cormorant' hood ornament. ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN In the age of 16-cylinder luxury, the Twelve was one of the fastest cars you could buy for anything less than Duesenberg money. That said; the higher-powered offerings from Cadillac, Marmon and Pierce-Arrow could probably nip a Packard Twelve in a close race. But a modified mill like this roadster's 473 cubic inch L-head V12 certainly wasn't something to readily bet against. For 1937, the Twelve's running gear underwent the most radical redesign in its history. The car's traditional 3-speed synchromesh transmission was augmented with an independent front suspension, marketed as "Safe-T-Flex", a proven hydraulic brake system and steel disk wheels. This resulted in 15th Series Packards, most prominently the top-of-the-line 12-cylinder models, being widely regarded as some of the most driver-friendly cars of the Classic Era; with the smooth, effortless engineering of vacuum-boosted brakes and a vacuum-boosted clutch being particularly well-suited to modern roads. As such, the most desirable open body styles are only rarely offered for sale. HISTORY The Coupe Roadster pictured here is a known, authentic and exclusive classic that's believed to be 1 of only 69 builds. The car still has its original firewall tag. Its history is known all the way back to the 1950s. And, for over half a century, this drop-top was the prized possession of well-known Southern California enthusiast Bob Hance, who regularly displayed it at CCCA activities and Golden State Concours d'Elegance. In 2001, when Mr. Hance decided to sell his 2-owner gem, a ground-up, professional restoration was well documented via photographs and receipts. Naturally, that restoration involved impeccable attention to detail, featuring items such as correct pinstripe patterning, a correct leather interior, correct wool carpet and a correctly detailed engine bay. And the car wears many factory accessories including: a heater, a trunk rack, a correct 30-gallon fuel gauge indicator, a factory-installed AM radio that's wired to an under-car antenna and chrome wheel covers that are complete with Packard cloisonne emblems. Since that restoration the car has seen quite a few significant milestones, achieving CCCA Senior Premier status, being recorded as a 2009 AACA National First Prize winner and completing a 900-mile CCCA CARavan. A Packard was a sign of wealth and distinction when it was new, and the reputation has only grown as these elegant machines have only grown rarer. Packards have always been about providing premium motoring, but this one shows a high level of class in its originality. The bodywork, chrome grille, solid pinstripe wheels, lights, foldable luggage rack, and all other major components look like they were in the care of someone who knew that maintaining did not mean fidgeting. This car was refreshed about forty years ago, which was more about extensive maintenance than replacement. The Runabout body style is one of the most iconic forms of the era. You have an open motoring roadster for when you want personal elegance, and then the foldable rumble seat is there for everything from extra friends to a place of honor in parades. For added weather protection, there is a folding canvas top with the factory-correct side curtains to fully button-up this classic. Because this Packard would spend most of its time open to the world, the interior perfectly complements the exterior. The original black leather seats coordinate well with the earthtone green and black accents on the outside. The real wood panels inside complete this organic feeling. There might be a place or two that could use a new lacquer finish for those who don't cherish absolute originality. Overall, it's hard to find a piece that has been replaced (or needs replacing) in the 87 years since this luxury car first left the factory. There is plenty of space for the driver and passenger within this car's 126-inch wheelbase (because 1928 was the fifth year for this series, this is often referred to as a 5-26 or 526 model). Powering this Packard is the 289 cubic-inch straight six cylinder motor that is mated to a three-speed manual transmission (pre-synchromesh). 1928 was the final year for the "Single Six" and constant improvement to this model meant its 81 hp was now approaching its larger eight-cylinder brother. All Packards carried the same engineering marvels of the time such as the four-wheel brakes, chassis lubrication system, and pedal activated stop light. While the six-cylinder was a bit more economical, it is like trying to compare Rolls-Royces today. The cost of this Runabout when new could have bought around five Ford Model A's. In fact, Packard used a great analogy to help people understand why the 526 models were so expensive. The company would mention that people once bought paper-soled shoes until they realized buying better shoes lasted longer. So Packard warned others not to pay less for paper-soled cars. Imagine if had they had only known how long this roadster would last! Packard promoted this one as a car that offered beauty, distinction, comfort, long life, economy, and safety. Nine decades later, we couldn't agree more. Finding another out there is tough, this one won't last in our showroom...call today!!! 1928 Packard 526 Runabout for Sale 1928 Packard 526 Runabout for Sale Stock # 3048-CHA Charlotte Showroom 5400 West WT Harris Blvd Charlotte, NC 28269 Local/International: (704) 598-2130 Toll-Free: (866) 542-8392 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Atlanta Showroom 213 Thornton Rd Lithia Springs, GA 30122 Local/International: (678) 279-1609 Toll-Free: (877) 367-1835 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Dallas/Fort Worth Showroom 5400 Sandshell Dr Fort Worth, TX 76137 Local/International: (817) 764-8000 Toll-Free: (855) 877-2707 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM CST Sat: 9AM - 5PM CST Email: [email protected] TERMS OF SALE 1. If you're a Packard fan, then you already realize that cars like this 1950 Packard are very special machines that drive superbly and offer a level of quality few other automakers could match. And if you don't know the name Packard, well, maybe this car will fill in the details for you. The fastback coupe, or club coupe, body style on this 23rd Series Packard, is the perfect antidote to the frumpy styling of the immediate post-war era. Smooth, sleek, and very streamlined, it offers a glimpse into the future with a handsome period twist. Accentuating the car's aerodynamic profile with two-tone white and blue paint is a smart idea and the colors are period-correct so there's nothing to distract you from the clean shape. It's not a show car, but the paint and good panel fit mean that you'll never shy away from a cruise-in with it, and with exemplary road manners, you'll probably start looking for new spots to attend just so you have someplace to drive. Restrained use of chrome and stainless was a hallmark of Packard design, and the brightwork on this car is in decent shape, perhaps even original, from the stylized hood ornament, to the distinctive Packard grille, to the wrap-around rear bumper. Luxurious yet conservative interiors were the name of the game for Packard, and this car sports gray cloth bench seats, what appear to be original door panels, and a simple dashboard layout to make driving the car easy. The gauges are arranged in two round pods holding the speedometer and clock, with auxiliary gauges tucked in between, all visible through the spokes of the very cool steering wheel. This car is equipped with Packard's first automatic transmission, a 2-speed unit called the "UltraMatic" that works as advertised. Secondary controls are arrayed under the dash with big ivory-colored knobs, and with the 12-volt conversion, the original gauges have been supplanted by auxiliary dials tucked in underneath. There's also an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit neatly installed in the center of the dash, although the unique vertically-oriented Packard AM radio is still in its slot. The back seat is spacious enough for full-sized adults, and despite the fastback profile, the trunk is spacious and includes a full-sized spare tire. The 288 cubic inch straight-8 engine features nine main bearings and impeccable smoothness, as you'd expect from the biggest name in inline eights. It won't win any drag races, but there's a swell of torque at any speed, and the automatic transmission needs only to get into high range and stay there, letting the engine's low-RPM grunt do all the work. As I mentioned, it has been upgraded to 12 volts, so there's a modern alternator tucked down low, and newer wiring throughout to accommodate the increased voltage. The original downdraft carburetor with oil bath air cleaner still manages the fuel, and the single exhaust system has a pleasant 8-cylinder hum that's totally appropriate. The unrestored undercarriage shows off years of clean living with surface scale and grease, but no glaring issues, suggesting this car has always been a favorite. Stock steel wheels and hubcaps are surrounded by period-correct wide whites. This Packard represents a lot of car for the money and the attractive (and somewhat rare) body style certainly helps.
